And now for the answers: 1. The country with the largest Jewish population today is Israel, with 6.4 million Jews. Next is the United States, with an estimated 5.6 million (average of several surveys taken in 2015-16). France comes next, with 465,000, then Canada with 415,000, followed by the United Kingdom, Russia, Argentina and Germany.

2. Tel Aviv is far and away the largest Jewish community of any metropolitan city in the world. It has nearly five times the Jewish population of Jerusalem and a million more than greater New York, which is second. Haifa is third, followed

by Jerusalem, Los Angeles and Miami.

3. New York City still has far-and-away the largest Jewish population in America, more than three times the number that live in second-place Los Angeles. Next in order are Miami, Chicago and Philadelphia, Baltimore/Washington and Boston.

4. Nearly one out of 10 New York City residents are Jews.

Miami is second with its 8.7% Jewish population, followed

by Philadelphia (4.6%), Boston (4.3%), Washington/ Baltimore (3.6%) and Hartford, Conn. (2.9%).

5. Dallas ranks 30th in the number of Jews among world cities, but it has the largest Jewish population of any city in Texas, with 57,800. Houston ranks 34th in the world but second in Texas, with 48,400. (That number may change when the results of the current demographic study are released.)

Next comes Austin, which is 59th in the world and third in Texas, with 16,300 Jews. San Antonio, which is 69th in the world and fourth in Texas, has 12,740 Jews.

6. And yes, the largest Conservative synagogue in the United States is not in New York, Los Angeles, Miami or Boston, but rather amazingly, right here in Houston.

That’s one question I’m guessing everyone at Congregation Beth Yeshurun got right!

Cary Hoffman was born in Waco, TX, and has been a member of Beth Yeshurun since 1994. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA, a MBA and a PhD in business and economics. He is President or Director of several agricultural based companies in Texas and Colorado that are involved in the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables, and in farming. Cary has been on the Board of Trustees since 2010 and has served on various committees, most recently as Chairman of the Budget Committee. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Houston Food Bank. Cary and his wife Marilyn have two sons (Michael and Alexander) and one daughter (Victoria) all of whom celebrated their B’nai Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Yeshurun.

Meet our new Director of Member Relations, Mindi Stern, who moved to Houston just to work at CBY! She comes to us after 15 years at Agudas Achim in San Antonio; serving as the face of synagogue membership and programming for the last four years - a position which was created specifically for her unique ability to address the needs and concerns of the membership. Mindi has two sons: the older son lives and works in Los Angeles and the younger is a freshman in college in San Antonio.

Mindi says, “I’m so happy to be here and to help CBY grow and engage all demographics of the congregation in connecting with the synagogue and each other. Please feel free to stop by or give me a call so that we can meet!”

We published an unidentified group photo in the October 2016 issue of The Message and asked for help in identifying the group. Our sincere thanks to those who responded. Below are the comments we received.

Irene Chanowsky Pearlman identified the photo as a Confirmation Class from around 1961. She spotted herself two positions to the right of Rabbi Malev. She also saw her twin sister, Barbra Markman, in the third row, and recognized several other people in the photo. Thank you, Irene!

Jonathan Hyman said, “I think that this is my confirmation class of 1958 at the old Southmore location. The picture is not real clear but I recognize a lot of the faces!”

Cheryl Nussenblatt identified the photo as the CBY Confirmation Class of 1963. She named about 41 people in the photo.

Reva has always considered Beth Yeshurun to be an integral part of her life and that of her family. As a native Houstonian and a 3rd generation member of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Reva grew up at the synagogue along with her two sisters, the late Shirley Stein, and the late Allene Nirken. Reva graduated from San Jacinto High School and then attended the University of Texas and the University of Houston. She graduated with a degree in Education and taught for two years prior to her marriage to her late, beloved husband, Shepard Shapiro. She was blessed with three beautiful daughters, who also grew up at Beth Yeshurun; Sharon Redd, married to Mark, Linda Uzick, married to Tommy, and Elaine Cohen, married to Brett. Reva considers herself even more blessed with six grandsons, Stephen, Eric, Andrew, Adam, Jonathan and Benjamin, and finally a granddaughter, Megan (married to Stephen). They truly are the light of her life.

Reva is honored to receive the Martha Lea Stein Woman of Achievement Award for her past service to Beth Yeshurun and the Sisterhood. Over the years, she has served in different capacities in many synagogue and sisterhood activities. She was a past Donor Luncheon Chair and she and her husband chaired an Annual Dinner, as well. She also served as Sisterhood President and was Gala Co-Chair (with her sisters) for the 100th Anniversary of Congregation Beth Yeshurun.

Reva recently retired after working full time for 44 years and is now able to participate in the synagogue activities she has always loved.

Jan grew up in Miami, FL, and moved to Houston in 1979 after marrying Stan, a native Houstonian and long time Beth Yeshurun member. She joined Sisterhood in 1984, eager to get involved in synagogue life, make new friends and deepen her engagement with Conservative Judaism. Over her 30 plus years in Sisterhood, Jan has been a tireless volunteer and leader, from chairing installation/Spring and staff appreciation lunches, Sisterhood Shabbats, and Passover workshops to assembling Hanukah and Passover boxes for the college students and serving as a “donor” table captain.

Jan has served on the Board of the Sisterhood for many years. As the recording secretary and financial (dues) secretary for well over a decade, she helped the Sisterhood convert its books from paper ledgers to digital accounting.

In addition, she served on the House Committee of the synagogue, helping to improve the kitchen facilities. Jan is a Life Member of Hadassah and the National Council for Jewish Women. She has been an active volunteer for the ERJCC Maccabi Games and Book Fair as well as supporting her children’s schools.

Jan’s children are her greatest pride and joy: Jeffrey, and his fiancé Hannah, Bradley and his wife, Mindy, and Jessica.

She enjoys exercising, playing mah jongg and traveling with her husband, Stan.

Jan is deeply honored to receive the Martha Lea Stein Award for her service to the Beth Yeshurun Community.

B’not Mitzvah Noa Hadas Strauss (November 4/5) is the daughter of Rabbi Brian and Lisa Strauss; sister of Joshua and Ari; granddaughter of Larry and Shirley Strauss, and Howard and Florence Shapiro; and great-granddaughter of Ann Donald, Max Schiff and his companion Velma Murray. Noa attends The Emery/Weiner School. For her Mitzvah Project, she collected toiletries and designed and decorated TV tray tables for the newly renovated Aishel House. She will donate 5% of her monetary gifts to Earth Justice and 5% to Yad Eliezer Israel.

Dani Maren Purcell (November 11/12) is the daughter of Heather and Ari Purcell; sister of Alison Purcell; and granddaughter of Gail and Jerry Greenberg, Sara Purcell, and Maurice Purcell. Dani attends Pin Oak Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Dani volunteered at Condit Elementary School helping children improve their reading skills. Dani will donate a portion of her monetary gifts to the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation in memory of her great-grandmother, Jeannette Ratafia, and to the Center For Hearing and Speech in memory of her great-grandmother, Betty Purcell.

Museum Speaker: Prof. Sharon Mintz

The Kaplan Museum of Judaica at Congregation Beth Yeshurun will host Professor Sharon Liberman Mintz as a visiting lecturer on Sunday afternoon, November 6, at 4:00pm.

Her subject will be “Rare and Interesting Objects in the Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica.” A reception will follow the lecture, after which Professor Mintz will lead a gallery tour through the museum.

Professor Mintz is Curator of Jewish Art at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, the largest Judaica library in the western hemisphere. She specializes in Illuminated Hebrew manuscripts and rare printed books. During the past 30 years, she has curated more than 40 exhibitions and authored 10 exhibition catalogues as well as several important books on related fields. As a well-known scholar, she has lectured widely in the USA, UK and Europe. She is also one of four consultants on Judaica to Sotheby’s, which means that she and her colleagues select the items that Sotheby’s includes in its auctions.

The Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica actually houses one of the best collections of Judaica in the United States outside of New York City or Los Angeles. Individuals and groups are always welcome, and many in the Jewish and non-Jewish communities have already taken advantage of the opportunity to visit. Congregation Beth Yeshurun is excited to announce that arrangements are being made to allow greater access, and these will be announced before the end of 2016.

Over the past few years, Professor Mintz has advised the Kaplan Museum on purchases to fill out the collection. Some recent additions include a fine, highly decorated Persian ketubah from 1890, a glazed, 19th century eastern European ceramic Hanukah menorah (remarkable for its fragility and its having survived intact), and a beautiful Pesach plate from France, dating to approximately 1850.

Professor Mintz’s lecture, which will focus on pieces in the Kaplan Museum, and the reception that follows are free and open to the public. The free Gallery Tour should be especially interesting and informative for all those wishing to attend.

Thanks for the Fig Leaf

It’s a Mitzvah

Imagine Adam and Eve standing in the Garden of Eden...before God...totally naked.

How would you feel? Wouldn’t you like at least a fig leaf yourself?

“Ummm...thanks, God...” (rustle, rustle) “Yes, You wanted something?”

Rabbi Horwitz We learned at an early age that there is something undignified about not having appropriate clothing. The problem is not usually the dignity of the place, but the dignity of the person. If I didn’t have the right clothing, where could I go?

So the tradition mandates that each morning I thank God Who is malbish arumim, Who clothes the naked, Who gives us the means to maintain the dignity of human beings. I am reminded that not everyone is so fortunate, that I have more clothes than I use, and that part of what I should do as a Jew is to make sure that others in my community, aged or schoolchildren, have that dignity. It’s one of the many ways we are supposed to imitate God, who gave some clothing to His freshly created children.

How important is this? More important than fasting on Yom Kippur, as we read on that morning from the prophet Isaiah: When you see the naked, clothe them; do not ignore your own flesh.

This is how prayer is supposed to inspire us to action. If I learn not to take my clothing for granted, perhaps I won’t be so quick to take for granted that everyone else has what they need.

NEW REGULATION FOR POST OAK CEMETERY For pedestrian and driver safety, effective November 1, 2016, the N. Post Oak Road entrance gate to Post Oak Cemetery will be closed. ALL traffic must turn west at the light at Awty School Road, pass David Weekley’s property, and then turn left to enter the cemetery. The N. Post Oak gate will only be used as an exit following services.
