There are, I think, two Israels in my life, two Israels that are so different that I sometimes cannot believe they are the same country.

There is, first of all, the Israel that I read about in the newspapers each day, the Israel that is constantly in the news, that people write about and argue about, the Israel that I worry about and sometimes anguish over and give so much emotional energy to defend and protect and explain.

And then there is the second Israel, the Israel that I actually see and experience when I go there, when I walk the streets of Jerusalem and stand before the Western Wall, the Israel I encounter driving up the coastal highway when we visit Tel Aviv and Netanya, Safed and Tiberias; the Israel that is never in the news, but always in my heart, my mind, my soul.

Because I live in America, I have to remind myself that there are two Israels, because sometimes when I’m watching the news or I read misguided commentaries and analyses about Israel, sometimes I forget, if only for a minute, just how beautiful and inviting, warm and uplifting that other Israel—“my Israel”—is.

Which is why I have to keep going back, as I will this summer, this time with a busload of Beth Yeshurun

members and friends, 30 in all.

I am often asked if I don’t get tired of going to Israel.

After all, people say, how many times can you see Masada?

My answer is a simple one: I may tire of ascending Masada, but I never tire of remembering that Masada’s defenders were my ancestors.

I never tire of hearing Hebrew spoken in the streets and written on store signs and street signs.

I never tire of hearing even secular Israelis greet me with “Barukh habah,” “may you be blessed,” or hearing a grocery store cashier wish me a “Shabbat Shalom.”

I never tire of walking along streets named after Rabbis Hillel and Shammai, Herzl, Ben-Gurion, or my distant cousin Arlosoroff.

I never tire of strolling through Jerusalem on Friday morning and smelling the challahs baking in one bakery after another, or seeing every sidewalk and street corner filled with flowers for the Shabbat table. Even among secular Israelis, a challah, bouquet of flowers and special food for Friday night dinner are commonplace.

And yes, too, I never tire of the mood that settles over Israel when the sun starts to set on Friday night and the streets fill with Jews walking to one shul or another. The voices from a thousand synagogues fill the air and blend in the streets as the Sabbath Queen makes her entrance.

To be there is to be revitalized and renewed, and not only do I never tire of going, I never tire of the excitement that precedes my departure and the emotional rush I feel when our plane touches ground.

And God willing, these are the emotions our fellow travelers will feel this Memorial Day when we emerge from Ben-Gurion Airport and begin our journey. May we go in peace and return in peace. Amen.

May 9th led by Gary Edmondson and Ray Sher The Torah portion is Acharey Mot, after the death. We take a look at the ritual of purification of our inner Mishkan. Sometimes we stray, we aren’t perfect. It is said that straying is caused by the wild part within us not being allowed its freedom and that is where sin comes from. In meditation, we will look at our inner Mishkan, what is wild in us, how we allow it freedom, and the affect it has on our lives.

The practical aspect for Jews today is that Ruth is considered the model “Jew by choice,” who freely joins with the Jewish people. Conversion in the time of the Bible was in some ways simpler than it is today, but just as there is some mistrust of outsiders today, there was mistrust three thousand years ago. However, not only does Ruth become Jewish, it turns out that she becomes the great-grandmother of King David. And since the Messiah is supposed to come from the House of David, it turns out that her acceptance is an essential step towards a messianic time.

CanCare is a nonprofit interfaith organization celebrating it’s 28th anniversary this year. It provides an opportunity for a person who is fighting cancer to walk with a volunteer who has survived that same cancer and treatment. CanCare’s member congregations spread awareness of CanCare’s free services within their congregations, and encourage cancer survivors to serve as volunteers in the community. CanCare’s volunteers provide one-onone emotional support to cancer patients and their family members, offering encouragement, hope, and understanding that comes from a shared experience.

Benjamin Avi Zadok (May 4/5) is the son of Amy and Segev Zadok; brother of Emma and Gabriel; grandson of Helene and Dror Zadok and Allen and Elaine Schuster. Benjamin is a 7th grade student at the Emery /Weiner School. For his mitzvah project, Benjamin collected gently used sports equipment for the KIPP Academy School in Houston that serves low income families with diverse backgrounds. Benjamin will also be donation a portion of his monetary gifts to Friends for Life, a shelter for homeless animals that fully service their needs.

Layla Simone Mueller (May 11/12) is the daughter of Amy and Gage Mueller; sister of Myles; granddaughter of Judy and Ronnie Yambra and Phyllis and Robert Mueller; great-granddaughter of Betty Freedman. Layla attends Trafton Academy. For her Mitzvah project, Layla is making lunch packs for Kids Meals, Meals on Wheels for Preschool Children. She will give 10% of her monetary gifts to Seven Acres.

Zachary Andrew Fingeret (May 18/19) is the son of Michelle and Jeremy Fingeret, brother of Hailey, grandson of Susan and Alan Cororve, Mady and William Finger, and Arnold Fingeret. Zachary is a current 7th grader at Emery Weiner. For his mitzvah project, Zachary conducted a food drive benefitting the Houston Food Bank and Coastal Bend Food Bank to help replenish their food pantries after Hurricane Harvey. He also spent time volunteering at both food bank locations. Zachary plans to donate a portion of his monetary gifts to ServePR, an organization devoted to rebuilding Puerto Rico and supporting the food service industry after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

A Message from Gayle Kamen-Weinstein at the Beth Yeshurun Healing Center The healing process takes time and everyone faces the road to healing in a different way. We cannot judge how much time it should take to heal from a loss of a loved one, a home, a job, an illness, a pet. “Everyone finds their own way”. I am often asked as to what do we talk about in our groups at the Healing Center? We talk about loss, love, friendship, family. My heart was filled when I saw over 400 people at the sedar on the first night of Passover at Beth Yeshurun. In the true spirit of community we came together through the losses of the past year for the sedar. That is an example of building resilience and perhaps finding some joy.

Congregation Beth Yeshurun will be joining with JFS this summer on launching a study of resilience related to the trauma of Hurricane Harvey. There will be information coming soon on the details and how to participate in the study.

“Humans are evolutionarily wired for both connections and grief. We naturally have the tools to recover from loss and trauma.” Sandburg We have been surrounded by trauma and loss. It is like an open wound.

In order to heal the wound, it takes the efforts of our community to come together and begin to heal all of our wounds. There is strength when we are together and share with each other. That is the principle of a group. Strength changes everything.

Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers and small group discussions, we will explore what usually remains unspoken in men's lives at work and at home.
