replicas of their hametz counterparts. If Passover food was that good, we’d eat it year-round, but it isn’t and we don’t! We can rave about our wonderful Passover brownies at the seder, but by the end of the holiday we’re moaning for “real food.”

Still there’s no question, Passover has never been easier to celebrate than it is in our own day. “Passover: The Ever/Never Changing Holiday” Rabbi David Rosen Like so many of you, I have wonderful memories of celebrating Passover as a child. Of course, a lot has changed since then. My Mom would always get ready for Passover by buying all the kosher-for-Passover foods available back in the Fifties: Manischewitz matzah, Manischewitz matzah meal, Manischewitz matzah cake meal, Manischewitz potato starch and Streit’s macaroons. (In my childhood, Manischewitz and Passover were interchangeable terms.)

Our sedarim have improved in many ways, too. The story may be the same, and so too the songs, but the Haggadot we use are a dramatic improvement over the booklets on which I was raised. Growing up, we used a mix of the Maxwell House and the Shulsinger editions, which had very nice covers but very boring text. The pictures were cartoonish and uninteresting, and the English translations were atrocious. The Haggadah we’ve used at my family’s table for years is the beautiful Feast of Freedom, our Conservative Movement’s official Haggadah. Illustrated with bright and colorful pictures, this Haggadah has a fresh and modern translation which is accompanied by very helpful and insightful instructions and commentaries. It’s a Haggadah you can actually enjoy and not want to rush through.

Today, of course, we have kosher-for-Passover bagels, muffins and donuts; frozen full-course dinners and side dishes; and tons of cakes and candies. The food industry has capitalized on our desire for ways to make Passover both tasty and easy, and what could be easier than matzah ball soup in a jar or “home made” gefilte fish that comes in easy-to-boil loaves?

What has not changed, thankfully, is the power Passover still has to bring families together and to enable friendships to be renewed each year. This year, as every year, so many Beth Yeshurun members have opened their homes to guests from our congregation and community who are alone and have no place to go for seder, and we are expecting hundreds of people who flooded to join us at Beth Yeshurun for our congregational sedarim one or both nights. So many among us are still displaced. May all our doors be opened wide to welcome not only Elijah the Prophet, but those who seek the companionship of other Jews to make Passover special this year.

I welcome all of these new products though I know many people don’t. Sometimes members will tell me that it doesn’t “feel” like Passover to be served a rich and delicious chocolate fudge cake or a kugel made from Passover noodles. “You can’t even tell it’s Passover sometimes!” congregants complain. But really, you can call a Passover bagel whatever you like; it’s still not a bagel! Nor are most Passover foods exact

Brachot is a celebration of gratitude to Rabbi Rosen for his leadership and guidance for over 22 years as Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Rabbi Rosen has shared countless life cycle events with congregants and helped to build extraordinary bridges to Houston’s interfaith community. Rabbi Rosen continues to help his congregants navigate the tragic losses from Hurricane Harvey in the face of his own loss of his own home. Friday, March 30, is the first night of Passover. Just about every Jew goes to a Seder that night. But there is another ritual on that day to which all of you are invited. On the morning before Passover, following the regular daily service, we hold a special ceremony in the Greenfield Chapel. We complete the study of a tractate of Talmud. This year, the siyyum will be on Masekhet Ketuvot. Rabbi Horwitz Why do we do this now? Traditionally, the firstborn males fasted on the day before Passover, as an acknowledgment of their being spared in the plague of the firstborn in Egypt which occurred that day. Since it is a minor fast which only applies to a small subset of the Jewish people, participating in this joyous “siyyum” (completion ceremony) exempts the firstborn from the especially difficult fast before the Seder.

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel is there for happy occasions (the occasional babynaming, aufruf, and special birthday and anniversary celebrations) and for sad times, when our members come to recite Kaddish and remember loved ones. But it is also there for regular occasions, for all the days which fall on our Jewish calendar. Even if you are not a firstborn male, you are welcome to join us for the siyyum and the breakfast afterwards. Social Action Committee Update  Congregation Beth Yeshurun is in the process

of revamping our Social Action program. Rabbi Strauss and our new social action chairs Melissa Levin and Samantha Melman are exploring different options. Please look for more information soon. In February, we worked with Direct HOPE to help serve food to homeless people in Downtown Houston. B’nai Mitzvah Rebecca Bloome (March 9/10) is the daughter of Jerrad and Sara Bloome; sister of Amanda Bloome; granddaughter of Michael and Susan Bloome and Norma Castle and the late Walter Castle. She is a 7th Grader at Emery Weiner. For her Mitzvah Project, Rebecca is participating in the JFS Shabbat Box Project. CBY HEALING CENTER A Message from Gayle Kamen-Weinstein at the Beth Yeshurun Healing Center It has been 6 months since Hurricane Harvey devastated our community and our spirits. However,” we are still standing “as Elton John says in his song. Our groups have grown and thrived. We changed some of our focus to the flood support group, divorce support, co-ed grief support, caregivers and the Gathering Place. Our community and groups have grown and evolved along the journey to recovery. Some of the Healing Center meetings have resumed meeting at Beth Yeshurun. As many of us are in transition, it is good to be following the road back. After Pesach, I will be hosting a new support group called ” Roots and Wings”, to help people struggling with starting a family. Details are coming soon. Watch for my book, “The Wounded Healer” coming out in the Spring. “All the world is a narrow bridge and the main thing is to have no fear at all”. We have been surrounded by trauma and loss. It is like an open wound. In order to heal the wound, it takes the efforts of our community to come together and begin to heal all of our wounds. There is strength when we are together and share with each other. That is the principle of a group. Strength changes everything.
