Receiving the Law

From the Rabbi Rabbi David Rosen My Favorite Movies About Israel A few months ago, I wrote a column about Jewish-, Israeli- and Holocaustthemed movies that ended up being honored as Oscar winners or finalists.

This month, I’d like to share with you a list of my favorite movies about Israel.

Israeli films can be particularly difficult to find in the United States, so I have made sure that every film on my list is readily available through Amazon. com in USA-watchable DVD format 1/A. So here are five films from my list: “Kazablan” (1973; Israeli) is Israel’s version of “West Side Story.” Here, it’s an Ashkenazi boy who falls in love with a Sephardic girl, and the idea of these two people crossing this ethnic divide in Israel creates anger and distrust. Being a musical, things don’t get overly serious, however, and if you liked the big American musicals of the 1960’s and 1970’s, you’ll enjoy the wonderful melodies and the sight of Israelis dancing through the Promised Land!

“Sallah” (1960; Israeli) is one of Israel’s most enduring comedies. The actor Topol is Sallah, an immigrant from Yemen who arrives during Israel’s War of Independence and decides to better his family’s fate by outwitting the well-meaning Israeli bureaucrats trying to force him to be less Yemeni and more

Israeli. Nearly six decades later, Sallah remains funny and poignant as it takes us back to a wonderful but challenging time in Israel’s early history.

“Ushpizin” (2004; Israeli) is about a couple that lives in Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox Meah Shearim. The couple has built a sukkah and is looking forward to a lovely yontiff when they are visited by two very secular Jewish crooks who are on the run and have decided to take refuge with them. Now the two worlds come into uncomfortable contact with one another – a contact that is both funny and moving, distressing and yet insightful.

“The Juggler” (1953; American) is the story of a juggler (played by Kirk Douglas) who survived the concentration camps and made it to Palestine alive but deeply damaged emotionally.

I love how the film takes us back to Israel’s earliest days, when it was a young and somewhat innocent country. Here was a nation in its infancy, trying to blend the proud Israeli-born sabra with the broken survivor of Europe’s camps.

“Fill the Void” (2013; Israeli) is an amazing film about a young woman whose plans to marry her true love may have to be set aside so she can marry her deceased sister’s husband, as required by ultra-Orthodox Judaism. How a woman who is devoted to her faith reconciles her beliefs with a law that will change her own life so dramatically forms the basis for this exceptional film.

In a later column, I’ll share another five of my favorite Jewish films. For now, enjoy!

The students of BYDS created a memorial for the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust. This project was started three years ago under the direction of Jodi Gold, Beth Yeshurun Day School Art teacher, in collaboration with the Holocaust Museum Houston’s Butterfly Project. The large canvas features 200 ceramic butterflies, each created by a student in the day school, rising from a gathering of Holocaust victims, imprisoned behind barbed wire. Plans are currently being made to find a permanent place for the memorial to be displayed.

Concerning pets at all Beth Yeshurun cemeteries: We have observed visitors bringing animals to our Post Oak and Allen Parkway Cemeteries. We do not allow pets in any of our cemeteries unless they are service animals. We strongly urge visitors to please either leave your pets at home or in your car while you are in the cemetery.

Being Uplifted

It’s a Mitzvah

Most of us have had at least one experience that made us feel ten feet tall.

(For me, that would be about twice my actual height.) Maybe it was the day your spouse said yes, when you weren’t really sure what the answer would be. Maybe it was when you pulled off that big deal, Rabbi Horwitz maybe when your child pulled off the big deal, maybe when your grandchild... You get the idea.

Judaism teaches the potential for being uplifted every day. In Psalm 30, which we recite each morning, the author puts this in a wonderful way. He says: aromim’kha, I raise You up, God, I extol You, kee deleetanee, because You lifted me up! You helped me, You pulled me through my own challenge.

Today, says the Psalmist, I feel ten feet tall, and so I thank You. It’s a way to look at life. Every berakha we say also lifts up God, exalts God, affirms that God is real. And that is one thing we can surely do for Him. There are also people who uplift us regularly. They are God’s best partners. Our gabbai and friend Steve Rudoff was one of those people.

Thank you, Steve, for lifting us up as you always did. All of us in the Greenfield Chapel community will miss you.

Digital Media Specialist: Jennifer Rosenzweig

Jennifer is very passionate about strengthening the Jewish community as she has been active in Houston’s nonprofit arena for over a decade. Having previously served as the Director of Development for Congregation Beth Israel, Jennifer built an innovative and highly-successful endowment program.

Prior to this role, Jennifer served as the Executive Director of the Hebrew Free Loan Association.

As a volunteer attorney, Jennifer has donated over 4,000 hours for Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Houston, handling business formation for the creation of Celebration Company.

Serving as a foreign exchange student after the breakup of the Soviet Union in Russia and Ukraine, Jennifer earned her undergraduate degree on full scholarship in economics and political science from the University of Miami. She then attended Syracuse University College of Law and continued her studies several years later at Rice University’s Center for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership, focusing on the area of development.

Jennifer is a familiar face around Beth Yeshurun. She is a former Board and Budget Committee member and is the current Family Life Coordinator. In addition to her work at the synagogue, she has been an active volunteer in our Day School, serving on the Board of Trustees and as PTO President.

Her family has been members of CBY for four generations and her children are in the BYDS Elementary School.

Jennifer has an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and has worked for several companies in both the chemical and nonprofit sectors doing accounting, auditing, database design and management reporting. As Digital Media Specialist, Jennifer will move us forward in our social and electronic media presence and boost our ability to reach congregants, potential congregants, and community more effectively and more dynamically. This role dovetails perfectly with her continuing role of Family Life Coordinator, as our young families are an important target of outreach and inclusion.

Bat Mitzvah Claire Anne Frankfort (June 3/4) is the daughter of Andria Frankfort and Todd Frankfort; sister of Lucy Frankfort; granddaughter of Phyllis and Bernie Milstein, and Ricki and Milton Frankfort; and great-granddaughter of Maurine Harris. Getting Past No

by Gayle Kamen-Weinstein, LMSW Next month I will be leaving for an adventure in Israel. I am going to attend Bar Elan University to study conflict resolution on a global scale. I have worked as a family and divorce mediator for over 25 years. I have seen and dealt with all kinds of conflicts.

Years ago I read William Ury’s book , “Getting Past No” and had the opportunity to train with him during a mediation workshop. As a social worker and counselor, I see conflict in a different way then attorneys and arbitrators. I am always looking for something in common, some small thing to agree upon and then look to build a bridge to come over and find agreements, preserve dignity and move forward. This can be very challenging between people in deep conflict and with long held prejudices and anger.

I am going to move out of my comfort zone and dive into the pool of classes in a graduate program in Israel. The program will include an internship at dispute resolutions centers and offices. I will also travel to places around Israel to visit and practice new techniques and strategies for solving problems and conflicts between people.
