For that, I devoured each issue of The Message I received from Beth Yeshurun, each of which included Rabbi Segal’s most recent sermon. They were to me masterpieces, filled with Torah but also with humor, poignant and powerful illustrations and salient lessons which showed the role Judaism could play enriching anyone’s life.

From the Rabbi My Rabbis with Rabbi David Rosen As I look back on my career, I am keenly aware of all the colleagues and friends who guided and shaped me into the rabbi I have become. This month, in my last Message column, I want to share with you the impact that two very special rabbis in particular have had on me.

When I came to Beth Yeshurun 22 years ago, Rabbi Segal’s hair wasn’t quite as dark as it had once been, but his mind was just as sharp, and I learned from watching him how to really take care of congregants in need and what it meant to be a rabbi who truly loved his congregation. His door has always been open to me, and I have entered it many times seeking his wise counsel and advice. For all he has taught me by word and deed, he will always be my rabbi and I will be eternally grateful.

By far and away, no single rabbi has had a greater influence on me than Rabbi Jack Segal, my emeritus these last 22 years but my rabbi and mentor going back to the day I was 14 and met him when he first came to Houston.

I am today grateful as well to Rabbi Jimmy Kessler who, when I was a junior at the University of Texas, pulled me aside and asked if I had ever considered becoming a rabbi.

I never had, but his encouragement led me to a career that I have cherished every day of my life. And I am so grateful that, in all the years since he was my Hillel rabbi, we have continued to be dear friends and he has remained both a mentor and beloved colleague as well.

He stood in stark contrast to Rabbi Malev, but it was more than a generational change. Rabbi Segal was a different kind of rabbi: funny, outgoing and blessed with a boundless creative energy that made being Jewish a thrill.

Over the years, Rabbi Segal’s sermons followed me to the University of Texas via his bi-weekly mailings to college students. When I was editing the Jewish student newspaper, I asked him to write a column for me; there wasn’t a rabbi anywhere who was writing on subjects that Rabbi Segal wrote about it!

In rabbinical school, I took numerous classes on how to write sermons. My professors taught me everything except

How many rabbis are so fortunate as I have been to have the two most influential rabbis in my life here with me over the last two decades? Today I thank both of these extraordinary men again for teaching me, each in his own way, how to be the best rabbi I could be. As I look back on a career that has spanned nearly four decades, I feel so truly blessed.

BRACHOT – A RESOUNDING SUCCESS! Over 1300 people attended Brachot on May 23rd at the Hobby Center. The concert, written by Cantor Meir Finkelstein, was held in honor of Rabbi David B. Rosen’s retirement as our Congregation’s Senior Rabbi of over 22 years. Chaired by Alice Small and Bruce Stein, the concert was emceed by local TV journalist Courtney Zubowski Haas and featured music from Broadway, opera and Jewish liturgy.

The program’s music was performed by the Houston Symphonic Ensemble & Chorus and conducted by Richard Bado. Incredible solo performances were also part of the evening, featuring musicians from across the U.S., including Cantor Finkelstein, Cantor Rachel Goldman, Cantor Chayim Frenkel and pianist-composer Becker KB. Cantor Finkelstein’s daughter, Emily also appeared as a guest artist, along with performances by the Beth Yeshurun Day School Choir and Beth Yeshurun’s Religious School Zamranim.

The program closed with Ellen Cohen, Mayor Pro-Tem of the City of Houston, declaring May 23, 2018 as Rabbi David B. Rosen Day. The final sweet note for this beautiful evening was a special tribute by Three Brothers Bakery, who provided cherry-filled hamentachen to all of the evening’s attendees as for many years, Rabbi Rosen made a weekly pilgrimage to the Three Brothers Bakery to pick up his favorite treat.

We Jews have endured many such shocks. It might be reasonable to say that many of us have some degree of PTSD in the post-Holocaust era, in a time when antisemitic hate still shows itself in many places and Israel is demonized beyond all other countries. In past generations, Jews did not deny such shock; they regularly acknowledged it in ritual and within the Jewish calendar.

ROSH HASHANAH HONEY UPDATE

Dear Congregants,

Due to the many families displaced by Hurricane Harvey many buyers of honey last year did not receive a list of folks they sent honey to in 2017. If this applies to you please contact me at pkatz88@comcast.net. Include your current mailing list so we can send you a duplicate.

With this list you’ll be able to reorder, delete or edit last year’s recipients.

It is hard to believe that the summer is just begun and I am already focused on the High Holy Days, the Freedman/Levit Service and the Family Choir. If you have ever considered being part of the choir, this is definitely the year to do it. There are significant changes being made and it is always fun to be part of something new.

Remember the deadline to order is July 11th. All orders after that date will be charged an additional $5/jar to cover first-class postage. All honey will be delivered before Erev Rosh Hashanah.

Through the years the family choir has grown to include parents and children and participates in services in the Freedman/Levit Sanctuary. This year, the Freedman/ Levit Contemporary High Holy Day service will again be led by Rabbi Sarah Fort and myself with Judy Yambra conducting the choir, but only on Erev Rosh Hashana, September 9, and Kol Nidre, September 18. The day time service will change and the Family Choir will lead the congregation in Barg at different times during the day, both on Rosh Hashana, September 10, and Yom Kippur, September 19. In addition, the choir will also be an integral part of the teenage Mincha service later in the afternoon on Yom Kippur day in the Barg Sanctuary.

The prices and deadline are set by the vendor.

All net profits from this fundraiser support the students of our Shul and schools. We support Hillel, the Purim festival, Tefillin training and more.

It is our plan to hold an initial rehearsal on Sunday, August 19th from 4:30 pm-6:00 pm. If it is impossible for you to attend, please let me know your intentions and I will see you the following rehearsal, which will take place on Wednesday, August 22rd from 6:30-7:30. Typically, we meet for 1 ½ hours on Sundays and 1 hour on weekdays.

Most of the rehearsals will take place in Stein Hall.

You will be notified of changes and we will confirm all rehearsals by email after the first rehearsal.

HFLA has loan funds available to Houston area Jews in need. HFLA encourages those in need of an interest free loan to apply.

July 25th led by Jan Silver Mindfulness Meditation with an emphasis on healing and restoration

The philosophy of HFLA is to help those in need by giving them an interest-free loan instead of a charitable handout. This is considered the highest form of charity in Judaism. It maintains the dignity of the person looking for financial help by giving them an opportunity to pay back their confidential loan, rather than forcing him or her to be viewed as a burden on the community. Some of the interest free loans provided by HFLA including those for Education, Housing; Medical; Commercial; Adoption/ Infertility, Credit Card debt, Weddings, and Divorce. HFLA also has funds for educational loans for undergraduate, graduate and technical studies.

MEET THE 2018-19 SISTERHOOD CO-PRESIDENTS

Upcoming Sisterhood Events For the 5th year in a row the Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood will be collaborating with JFS and The Celebration Company in the assembly of the Honey-less Honey Cake Project. We will be assembling 600 bags of the Honey-less Honey Cake Mix on Tuesday, July 17th at Beth Yeshurun. We are counting on 50 volunteers!

Vicky Richker and Barbara Koslov

Barbara Koslov is a native Houstonian and a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Yeshurun. She attended Beth Hayeled and religious school at Beth Yeshurun and was married in the sanctuary with Rabbi Segal officiating at the ceremony.

Barbara’s three children are graduates of William S. Malev Day School and Barbara was an active member of the PTO during her children’s tenure at the school. Barbara’s mother, Esther Goldberg, introduced her to Sisterhood and together they attended a variety of Sisterhood programs and events.

She previously chaired the Torah Fund. Barbara served as the Sisterhood Treasurer for the past 6 years, prior to becoming Co-President of Sisterhood. Barbara is married to Geoffrey and they recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.

Vicky Richker is originally from Mexico City and moved to Houston in 1967 and joined Beth Yeshurun. She has been married to husband Michael for 10 years and between them they have 6 children and 7 grandchildren. Vicky and her husband were the first recipients of the Myrna Rudolph Tikkun Olam Award. Since joining Beth Yeshurun, Vicky has been extremely active at Beth Yeshurun and the greater Jewish Community.

She has co-chaired Beth Yeshurun’s Membership Committee with Gary Nagler, and the Social Action Committee with her husband Michael. Previously, she chaired the Sisterhood’s Torah Fund and Sisterhood Shabbat. Currently she serves on the Beth Yeshurun Board and High Holiday Committee.

Beth Yeshurun Healing Center I am studying conflict resolution and peace studies in Jerusalem this month. It is a very complicated issue and I am hearing from all sides of the conflict. What an amazing learning experience. I look forward to sharing with you when I return to Houston.

Watch for information about the Hurricane Harvey Research Project coming in August. We will be looking for volunteers to come out and fill out a questionnaire. You will also be able to share your experiences with other community members and professionals.
