We also found ways to highlight to each candidate the strengths of our Jewish community and the greater city of Houston. We pointed out that our community is diverse yet unified with dynamic organizations, schools, and leaders.

And that so many of those leaders make Beth Yeshurun their spiritual home.

In the end, we had done our part. Each applicant commented that Beth Yeshurun was above and beyond their favorite place to visit. They enjoyed our congregants, our schools, and the general sense of warmth and friendliness that we often find at Beth Yeshurun. In short, they all seemed to quickly fall in love with our congregation. Who can blame them?

Then came the most important part of all, choosing from three of the top candidates in the country. At the beginning of our process, we had decided that we would look for a rabbi who was not only articulate, passionate, and hard-working, but also had a unique charisma that could attract younger members.

We wanted someone who had some good experiences as a rabbinical student so they could bring fresh ideas and have a real vision that could attract millennials. We also decided that we would never “settle,” but rather, if the ideal candidate was not available, we would wait another year.

Fortunately, after months of work, we were able to make a great decision for our future. As you know now, we chose Rabbi Sarah Fort. She begins her tenure at Beth Yeshurun this month as our new assistant rabbi. I hope you will find the time to welcome her to Houston and demonstrate to her that she made the wise choice to move to Texas. I also know that for years to come, you will concur with our decision to bring her to Beth Yeshurun.

Rabbi Fort’s new email is sfort@bethyeshurun.org. We will have a special welcome for her and her husband, Rabbi Ariel Sholklapper on August 27. Look for more information in the August Message.

How do you get a rabbi to come to Texas?

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Bruce and Rhona Caress, we were able to accelerate the hiring of a new assistant rabbi a year ahead of schedule. How do you start the process of hiring a new Conservative rabbi?

The Conservative Movement has two seminaries located in cities with vibrant Jewish communities -- The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles. We all know that Houston also has an extraordinary Jewish community, but not all of our fellow Jews in New York and Los Angeles are aware of it. We knew we had a lot of work to do to attract the finest rabbi.

We made sure to choose a search committee chair that would be able to articulate why Beth Yeshurun would be an ideal place for a top level candidate to begin his or her career.

Jerrad Bloome was the perfect choice. Jerrad was raised at Beth Yeshurun and has continued to stay involved as an active leader of our congregation. Jerrad, along with our strong search committee, made each of our final candidates feel at home.

Along with our leadership and so many of you, we created a very welcoming environment for all three of our final applicants.

HHD Choir - Freedman-Levit Sanctuary

Dear Families, Summer vacation is almost here but I wanted to communicate with you before everyone gets in travel and camp mode. While everyone else is thinking of the aforementioned summer activities my mind naturally goes to the High Holy Days. They will be here before we know it.

This year is going to be very exciting and I am hoping that you will consider your and your child’s participation. Rabbi Strauss, Judy Yambra and I will introduce our new Assistant Rabbi, Sarah Fort, to the Freedman-Levit Service for the first time. I have met her and am certain that she will be a perfect fit for Beth Yeshurun and our service.

I have planned a new musical surprise and, as always, look forward to working with you to create an inspirational and engaging service. As you think about the fall and forthcoming activities for your children, please remember that being a part of the choir is time-limited and that we will work with you to ensure that your child can participate in their activities and the choir.

Our first rehearsal for the High Holy Day Family Choir for the Freedman-Levit Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services will be Sunday, August 20th from 4:30-6:00pm. After that, we will meet each Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night (6:30-7:30pm) until the holidays are over. Both Judy and I are sensitive to all of the demands of the early school year and will work with you to guarantee a satisfying experience. Wednesday nights have been our traditional mid-week rehearsal. However, if there needs to be a change in time or day, we

are open to discussing it.

It has been my goal over the years to create a service that is unique in its ability to appeal to all age groups and at the same time satisfy the needs of families. It is not a “children’s” service, but it is time-constrained and makes use of music and participation to engage and encourage interaction for all who attend. The choir, made up of adults and children, has been a meaningful and enriching part of this service for the last 43 years.

The choir will participate in the Freedman-Levit service on Rosh Hashanah, September 20th and 21st, Kol Nidre, September 29th, and Yom Kippur day, September 30th, through Yizkor. The choir will once again be an integral part of the teenage Mincha service later in the afternoon on Yom Kippur held in the Barg Sanctuary for the entire congregation.

I hope you and/or your children will join us for what has always been a very satisfying and exciting experience for all of us involved. One of the great joys of my life has been to work with those of you who have chosen to be part of this meaningful activity. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to have you and your children join us as we prepare for the upcoming holidays.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE MESSAGE DON’T MISS A SINGLE ISSUE!!!

We are moving into the 21st Century!

Beginning this fall, right after the High Holy Days, we will distribute The Message by email, and not by U.S. mail.

Exceptions will be made for those congregants who do not have access to computers or personal devices, and who notify us of this. Otherwise, you will only get your Message by email.

The “digital” Message has several advantages over the paper Message. Most importantly, we will save about $30,000 a year in printing and mailing costs. And we will not be “killing trees,” saving about 250,000 pieces of paper (that’s about 30 trees). Per year. And visually, the digital Message will be in stunning, bright color, not the dull black, white and gray. You will be able to print out those pages you need to save without printing the entire Message. And, of course, The Message will continue to be available on the website, as it is now.

It is important, therefore, that we have current email addresses for everyone in your family who wants to receive an email Message, including, if you want, children who have their own email addresses. To insure we have accurate email addresses, please fill out the form on the the next page (page 6) and return it to the synagogue, Attention: The Message, or go to the website now and fill out the form digitally.

If you do not have computer or device access, we will still print and mail a copy of The Message to you, BUT YOU MUST LET US KNOW TO DO THIS. Please be sure to fill out the form on page 6 and return it to the synagogue, Attention: The Message. If we do not hear back from you, you may miss out on continuing to receive The Message.

Everyone knows that Judaism is a religion of life. “Choose life,” says the Torah. “L’chayim,” says the Jew. And yet we have many rituals of remembrance and many practices surrounding shiva and the subsequent periods of mourning.

There is no contradiction between these poles. As Rabbi David Wolpe puts it, “Ritual is both an aid to memory and an insistence that our Rabbi Horwitz sorrow be within limits.”

On Tisha B’Av, we are reminded of tragedies that our people have suffered and of the despair so many Jews endured.

It is a full fast day...worse than Yom Kippur, much worse, not only because it comes in the dead of summer (especially here!), but also because Yom Kippur comes with the promise of forgiveness and the hopes of how we can make the year ahead better and more meaningful. But Tisha B’Av also comes to an end, and it is followed by the weeks of consolation (marked by the prophetic messages every Shabbat) leading up to Rosh Hashanah. We remember, but we affirm a future of life.

It’s as much a part of Jewish life as...life.

Our observance this year begins Monday night, July 31st, continuing through the day Tuesday, August 1st.
