Yes, last year was moving along nicely until Aug. 27 when Beth Yeshurun and so many of our homes washed away. These last few months have been hard. It will take months before our city and our neighborhoods feel fully-normal again. And yet, all around us we see progress being made — in our houses and neighborhoods and, yes, in our own beautiful synagogue. With the arrival of 2018, we are taking the first steps toward returning to our spiritual home on Beechnut, and it feels more meaningful than just “Happy New Year.” It feels kind of holy. Yes, holy. Holy to be back in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary for prayer, for Torah, for all the gratification that comes when we’re sitting in our own sacred space, surrounded by men and women with whom we’ve shared so much for so long. Our people and our community. When I first walked in late August through what Hurricane Harvey left behind of Beth Yeshurun, I was emotionally stunned. Scarcely a square inch of our sprawling campus was not ruined. In the days and weeks that followed, the walls came down and the floors came up. What survived was packed in boxes that today fill the Pulaski-Rauch Auditorium from corner-to-corner. The Barg Sanctuary took days to be drained of its four feet of water and, once dry, it looked hollow and abandoned. By nature an optimist, I wondered if our synagogue could ever be fully restored and brought back to life. But like unappealing little caterpillars that transform themselves into gorgeous butterflies, Beth Yeshurun is emerging and, in January, in time for the “ordinarily not so important civil new year,” we will begin coming home. For all the challenges that still lie ahead in rebuilding our shul, our homes and our lives, the arrival of 2018 feels a little like Rosh Hashanah to me. We have survived. He has kept us alive. He has brought us into a new year! Sheheheyanu. May it herald the start of a Shanah Tovah — a year of happiness, of celebration, of joy — for us all.

From the Rabbi “A Rosh Hashanah in January” with Rabbi Rosen Generally speaking, the start of a new civil year has a limited impact on most of our lives. Many people start it by partying and getting drunk, though according to Weight Watchers International and 24 Hour Fitness, the arrival of January each year brings these businesses and others their biggest sign-up seasons, which is positive. For years, the biggest challenge most of us faced was remembering to change the year when writing checks, but a lot of us don’t write checks anymore, so that reminder that a new year has begun is no longer too troublesome. The new civil year is a far cry from the Jewish one. Rosh Hashanah is a time of spiritual reckoning, of returning to our faith and shul, of re-imagining the kind of people, the kind of human beings, we want to be in the new year. It’s that time of year when we renew our memberships not in clubs but in shuls, and the only thing we drink is a cup of wine over which we recite the Sheheheyanu, a thanksgiving to God for having survived and lived to reach another year. It’s a very different kind of new year indeed. As 2018 begins, I’m starting to feel a little more “Rosh Hashanah-like” than I have in new years past. The start of this civil year seems to carry with it more gravitas than I expected.

Additional temporary seating will be our banquet chairs. Permanent new seats are on order but are months away. We also have new LED lights, courtesy or M&M Lighting. The Greenfield Chapel has new carpet and new walls and temporary chairs. The cabinets on the back wall are not yet completed. Stein Hall has new carpet and new walls.

B’nai Mitzvah Garrett Jacob Kaplan (January 5/6) is the son of Julie and Michael Kaplan and the brother of Morgan; grandson of Donna and Shelly Bloom, the late Gary Shafer, and Myra and Gene Kaplan. Garrett attends The Emery/Weiner School. For his mitzvah project, Garrett organized a fundraising campaign to benefit Beth Yeshurun Day School, following the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey. Garrett will donate a portion of his monetary gifts to Food Allergy Research & Education to help find a cure for peanut allergy.

MESSAGE FROM RABBI JACK AND TOBY SEGAL Recently, we received an e-mail from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles in regard to Richard Robinson who shot our son Michael in the head 36 years ago when he was a pre-med student at the University of Texas. (Robinson received a “life sentence” for this act): “On December 8, 2017, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted to release this offender to parole supervision.” We would like to thank all those who wrote letters over the years asking the Parole Board to keep Mr. Robinson in prison. Through your actions Mr. Robinson was incarcerated for 36 years, and for this we are thankful. Thank you. Jack and Toby Segal 9

The Ground Underneath You On Shabbat morning, January 20, we will recognize and pay tribute to all who maintain our daily services in the J. B. Greenfield Chapel. Attendees of the Chapel and Museum Minyan services are invited to join with the Sanctuary service at the conclusion of services in FreedmanLevit Sanctuary. Last year’s honoree, Dr. Stephen Tew, will be our speaker that morning. We will also acknowledge our Rabbi Horwitz previous honorees as “Minyanaire of the Year,” Jack Uzick, Filmore Cohen, Dr. Irving Rothman, and Dr. Stephen Tew...AND, we will pay tribute to Max Esses, our “Minyanaire of the Year” for this year! Max is the longest-running regular attendee of our weekday minyan and a much beloved member of our Chapel community, and it is our privilege to pay tribute to him; please join us in honoring Max on January 20!.
