In 1955, Betty Robbins, who as a child in Poland had persuaded the cantor of her local synagogue to allow her to join the congregational boys’ choir, was appointed as cantor of Temple Avodah, a Reform congregation in Oceanside, New York. The event ranked as a front-page item in the New York Times, which quoted “a spokesman for the School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion” as saying that Betty Robbins “might well be the first woman cantor in five thousand years of Jewish history.” The article continued, “The spokesman for the School of Sacred Music, founded in 1947 as the first training school for cantors in this country, said today there was no religious law, merely a tradition, against women becoming cantors.”

AROUND THE SHUL MENSCH OF THE MONTH We are pleased to honor Mark Trachtenberg as our latest “Mensch of the Month.” Throughout his entire adult life, Mark has been a selfless volunteer for so many worthy organizations. He previously served on the Executive Board of the Jewish Federation’s Community Relations Committee; the Education Policy Committee for the United Way of Greater Houston; and was Chair of the Appellate Section of the Houston Bar Association among other community roles. His passion, however, has shown in his tireless volunteer work for the Anti-Defamation League, where he became Chair of the Southwest Region in 2020. Mark had been Vice-Chair of the region since 2013 and on its Executive Board since 2005, while serving two stints as Chair of the region’s Civil Rights Committee. “My path toward volunteering for the ADL began when my family was cleaning out my grandmother’s house in Oklahoma,” Mark recalls. “Leona Trachtenberg escaped Hitler’s clutches when she left for the United States in 1938; her mother and sisters were not so fortunate.” Mark found letters in an old cardboard box that detailed both playful times of her youth and the tragic plight of his grandmother’s family in Warsaw. “I immediately felt a deep connection with my great grandmother and great aunts and vowed that I would honor their memory by devoting my philanthropic efforts to fighting hate and prejudice.” His passion has only increased with the spike in anti-Semitism seen in the United States and across the world in recent years. A native Houstonian and lifelong member of CBY, Mark learned the importance of philanthropy from his parents, Dan and Ellen Trachtenberg, and has been inspired by their legacy of service, volunteerism, and commitment to the Jewish community in Houston and around the world. Mark is a graduate of the Beth Yeshurun Day School and I. Weiner Middle School. He and his wife Stefanie have two children, Jacob (18) and Ava (14), both of whom followed in his footsteps and graduated from BYDS. An appellate litigator for the past two decades, Mark is most proud of his work on behalf of Texas public schools. In Mark’s honor, Rabbi Strauss will make a donation to the ADL.

Rabbi Diana Siegel was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Rabbi Siegel has always been passionate about her Judaism and has studied and taught in Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, and across the United States at all educational levels. The first ordained woman in the conservative movement born in Latin America, Rabbi Siegel was the spiritual leader at B’nai Israel in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She has volunteered for the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and devoted her life to building bridges between communities and performing acts of Tikkun Olam… repairing society and the world. Mazel Tov to Rabbi Siegel!

What does local book critic and former President/Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, Lee Wunsch, read while on vacation? From Lee’s much-followed Facebook page, “As we prepare to head out on another travel adventure, I’ll be reading We Stand Divided – The Rift Between American Jews and Israel. Thanks to Daniel Gordis for his usual wonderful insights on #Israel-#Diaspora relations. And, to Bari Weiss for How to Fight Anti-Semitism, her commentary on #Antisemitism and how to respond to an old scourge which none of us would have imagined seeing again in our lifetimes.” We can’t wait for his reviews (and pics from his travels)! 3

The Gathering Place provides a free of charge loving, safe and fun environment for care partners experiencing memory loss due to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke or other forms of dementia.

100 Jewish Men is a group of men dedicated to improving themselves and each other as men, fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends and Jews. Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers and small group discussions, we will explore what usually remains unspoken in men’s lives at work and at home. We have an incredible year planned and we hope you choose to be part of it.

The Gathering Place meets once a month, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun. The meetings combine physical movement, socialization, music, and other memory-stimulating activity in a safe and comfortable 3 1/2 hour time block, enabling caregivers to attend to their personal needs without worry. A professional staff member attends each Gathering Place to provide expert support and assistance to the volunteers. The Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood is a proud suporter of the Gathering Place. William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies

Sulam seventh graders have started learning about tefillin, and they were fortunate to have Rabbi Strauss visit with their class recently. He talked with them about the mitzvah of putting on tefillin and showed them how to put on tefillin. The class will be learning more about tefillin in the coming weeks, and each student is in the process of making a set of model tefillin, which will be displayed outside of Freedman Levit Sanctuary during the World Wide Wrap.

Panelists (left to right) Jerrad Bloome, Cara Rosenthal, Corby Kelly, Lillie Hurwitz, and Mitch Levy spoke with the fifth grade Religious School students about their own Jewish journeys. The fifth grade Religious School students have been learning about continuing their own Jewish journeys at home, in the synagogue, and in the community. The students have explored the options and opportunities for continued involvement such as youth groups, working as madrichim, leading services, and community projects. They recently enjoyed visiting with a panel composed of five Beth Yeshurun members who spoke about their own Jewish journeys. The panel included President Jerrad Bloome, Lillie Hurwitz, Corby Kelly, Mitch Levy, and Cara Rosenthal. Each panelist spoke about what shaped their Jewish identity and how they are currently involved in the community and/or the synagogue. They also learned about how each panelist brings Judaism into their homes. The students were curious to find out why the panelists were involved in their respective roles, and they had the opportunity to ask the panelists questions. It was great to have the panelists share their time with our students and help them to see that there are a variety of ways for adults to connect with Judaism.

Members of Kaskeset are pictured with sponsors Rita Blumenfeld and her daughter, Lisa Suvalsky. Third – sixth grade Religious School students welcomed Kaskeset, Binghamton University’s Jewish A Cappella group, to Beth Yeshurun in early January. They sang a variety of songs - some Jewish music in Hebrew and some current songs in English. The group is very talented, and the students and teachers enjoyed their performance! It was interesting for all to hear that only one of the members is a music major; the others were majoring in a variety of other areas. Toward the end, they broke the students into four groups, and each group worked with some of the members to learn a part for a song. At the end, they all came together to sing their various parts together. The program was made possible through the Blumenfeld/Suvalsky Religious School Enrichment Fund, which was established to provide enrichment programs for the Religious School. We were very glad to have Rita Blumenfeld and her daughter, Lisa Suvalsky, join us for the performance and workshop.

Each sixth grade Religious School student came together with a parent to assemble the personalized yad that they designed together online early in the school year. The sixth graders were pleased to see their online creations become a reality. Each sixth grader receives the yad as a gift from the Religious School with the hope that it will be used at the student’s Bar/ Bat Mitzvah as well as other times in the future. 9

IMPORTANT CHAPEL ANNOUNCEMENT

On January 4, I announced that, as of this fall, I will be relinquishing my role as Rabbi of the Greenfield Chapel. It is time for me to turn certain responsibilities back to the Chapel Committee and perhaps some other rabbi in the future.

Having attended the Chapel during my years in college, I found it a warm and embracing home where I learned much about Jewish learning, prayer and commitment. Since I became the Chapel Rabbi in 2005, I was privileged to meet, serve and become friends with many more participants, mainly from another generation. It has been an honor to play a part in the continuing life of the Chapel. Resigning this position, however, does not mean that I am leaving Beth Yeshurun; far from it! I will continue to teach in my classes and at evening minyan, to read Torah, and to participate on the High Holidays. I remember a popular song from the days I attended the Chapel in the early seventies, whose message I didn’t totally appreciate in those days: “Long may you run.” Here’s to the future of the Greenfield Chapel and all of you who support and participate in it!

B’nai Mitzvah Ariella “Ari” Zoe Berman (February 7-8) is the daughter of Randee and Howard Berman; sister of Sammy and Sophie. She is the granddaughter of Margaret and Louis Berman, and Lola Clayman and Stephen Clayman. Ari is a seventh grader at the Emery/Weiner School, where she is involved in the theater program, and cheer. For her mitzvah project, Ari is volunteering with the Shul of Bellaire “Mitzvah Club”, where she helps younger children perform mitzvahs on a monthly basis. Ari also collected and donated pet food, and supplies for a Houston animal shelter. She is participating in the Rabbi’s 10% plan, and donating a portion of her monetary gifts to help fight the wildfires in Australia.

Alexander Montie Levy (February 7-8) is the son of Naomi and Michael Levy; brother of Jake and Sarah Levy; and grandson of Jill (z”l) and Nat (z”l) Levy, Erika and Mannie Magid, and Larry (z”l) and Elsa Jaeger. Alex attended Beth Yeshurun Day school and is currently a 7th grader at The Emery/Weiner School, where he plays soccer and lacrosse, as well as being active in Student Government and Model United Nations. For his mitzvah project, Alex gathered and assembled toiletry kits and distributed them while volunteering with Beth Yeshurun’s Direct Hope social action group. He spent many Sunday afternoons serving meals to some of Houston’s homeless community with this group of volunteers. Alex will participate in the Rabbi’s 10% plan by donating a portion of his monetary gifts to charity in memory of his grandparents who have recently passed.

B’nai Mitzvah Jacob Maddox Magzen (February 22) is the son of Cheryl Magzen and Scott Magzen; stepson of Jacqueline Albright; brother of Anna; stepbrother of Matthew and Patrick; grandson of Hadassah and Ivor Foox and SueEllen and Thomas Magzen. Jacob is a seventh grade student at The Emery/ Weiner School, where he plays basketball and baseball. For his mitzvah project, Jacob volunteered with Count Me In, whose mission is to unite the community in an effort to brighten the lives of Jews of all ages by providing gifts and ritual items during the Hanukkah season. Jacob will donate a portion of his monetary gifts to Pitch In For Baseball and Softball, an organization that contributes to positive youth development by providing equipment to children around the world. Ellie Sloane Sherman (February 2829) is the daughter of Iris and Brad Sherman; sister of Joshua and Evan; and granddaughter of Drora and Mario Grossman, and Fannie Sherman and the late Steve Sherman. Ellie attends Ronald Thornton Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Ellie volunteered at the Houston Food Bank and is also a board member of National Charity League, where she often volunteers across multiple organizations throughout the city. Ellie will also donate a portion of her monetary gifts to Play Like a Girl, a charitable organization that inspires and propels young women through STEM and sports and will also send a donation to the American Diabetes Association, in memory of her Bapo. Evan Mitchell Sherman (February 28-29) is the son of Iris and Brad Sherman; brother of Joshua and Ellie; and grandson of Drora and Mario Grossman, and Fannie Sherman and the late Steve Sherman. Evan attends Ronald Thornton Middle School. For his Mitzvah Project, Evan volunteered at the Houston Food Bank as well as Hope for Three, an advocacy group for families living with autism spectrum disorder. Evan will also donate a portion of his monetary gifts to Soccer Without Borders, which provides a safe environment for underserved youth through soccer and will also send a donation to the American Diabetes Association, in memory of his Bapo.

Hannah Jordan Churchill (February 28-29) is the daughter of Edit and Sean Churchill; sister of Sophie and Emma; granddaughter of Drora and Mario Grossman, Dee Churchill, and Mike Churchill. Hannah is a 6th grader at Pin Oak Middle School, and a member of the gymnastics team at the Houston Gymnastics Center of the ERJCC. For her Mitzvah project, Hannah is volunteering at the ERJCC Gymnastics Center to help with the Gymnastics Superstars class, a class that teaches motor skills, coordination, balance and strength to children and adults with special needs. Hannah also volunteered her time at the Houston Food Bank. Hannah will participate in the Rabbi’s 10% plan by donating a portion of her monetary gifts to the World Wildlife Organization. They both love spending time with family and getting away to the mountains of Montana. Both girls have enjoyed volunteering at the Houston Food Bank and Evelyn’s Park Conservancy. They will be participating in the Rabbi’s 10% plan by donating a portion of their gifts to animal rescue for Australia. We are so grateful to Rabbi Strauss and the Beth Yeshurun community for sharing this special time with us.
