We Jews are famously known as People of the Book. Usually we think this is because of our common Biblical heritage with the other People of the Book. But I think it has a lot to do with our love of learning. We are and always have been a people who love and value learning, and thus teaching. Our most basic prayer, the Shema, includes the injunction: “Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. Impress them upon your children…” Our love of learning is Biblical!
Torah, for it is not an inheritance for you.” But just because it’s difficult, doesn’t mean we should avoid it. In fact, we need to make time to learn, study and grow. Rabbi Hillel famously ordered, “Do not say, ‘When I will be available, I will study,’ for perhaps you never become available!”
To help on that account, Beth Yeshurun is excited to be hosting a whole day dedicated to Jewish learning, the Federation’s 25th Anniversary Yom Limmud, on Sunday, February 17th from 9am to 4:30pm. Open to the entire Houston Jewish community, Yom Limmud is an opportunity to learn with scholars, rabbis and experts from all denominations and walks of life. From Jewish ethics to parenting, text study to Israel That love has remained strong throughout time. The Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association is pleased to announce that we have received a very generous donation for the purpose of constructing a chapel at the Post Oak Cemetery. The donation was made by the children of Jack and Sophia Bender in their memory and honor. The chapel will be an enclosed, climatecontrolled building with seating for approximately 200 people. The Cemetery Association and the Congregation are extremely grateful to the families for this gift which will benefit and provide comfort for all in our community for many years into the future. More information will be forthcoming as the plans and schedule are developed.

BETH YESHURUN GOLF TOURNAMENT RENAMED IN HONOR OF LU DORFMAN In honor Lu Dorfman, our retiring executive director who served Beth Yeshurun for 17 years, we are pleased to announce that our annual golf tournament has been renamed the Lu Dorfman Yiddishe Kup. Funds raised at the annual Yiddishe Kup benefit the Congregation’s Torah ReJEWvination project, which strives to repair and maintain our Congregation’s precious Torah scrolls. Over time, a number of our Torahs have been rendered not kosher due to separation between the Torah’s parchment and seams; discoloration or cracking of the ink used by the Sofer to scribe the Torah; or detachment of the Eitz Chaim. Torah ReJEWvination contributions ensure continued maintenance and repair to all of Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s scrolls, ensuring that we fulfill the commandment to show great respect and sanctify our Torahs. A BAD FRIEND

The Talmud tells us: o chevruta, o mituta. “Give me friendship, or give me death.” No matter how rich and stimulating one’s life may be, there’s something deficient about it for a person without at least one true friend.
100 Jewish Men is a group of men dedicated to improving themselves and each other as men, fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends and Jews. Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers and small group discussions, we will explore what usually remains unspoken in men’s lives at work and at home. One of the opening prayers each morning has us ask God: “Keep us far from a Rabbi Horwitz chaver ra, an evil friend.” Who would pick an evil person as a friend? What does it really mean to have a bad friend? The truth is, it’s very easy to have a bad friend. There are plenty of people who pose as friends, who attach themselves to someone whom they hope to use. Maybe they want a relationship with someone who will lend them money in a pinch (which may happen to them sooner than you realize). Maybe being your friend gives them legitimacy in certain circles. And all too often, you are the good guy who doesn’t realize what is going on until the evil friend has moved on to his next prey.

Another version of the bad friend is the one who appreciates your friendship well enough, but who is out of the picture when you really need a friend. Such a person may offer some “reason” for not being there (“I can’t take hospitals”; “Shiva homes make me feel creepy”), but we rarely feel the same about a person after they let us down. And sometimes a friend has a serious flaw that leads us to put ourselves at some distance from them.

When someone has proven themselves as a friend, we will treasure the way that friend extended themselves to us, cared for us, and made a hard time more manageable. But the bigger question is: what kind of friend are we? Will we be there for our friends, will we extend ourselves for them, when they have a crisis? For the ideal of “give me friendship, or give me death” applies not only to me, or to you, but to all others who believe in us and our friendship.

B’nai Mitzvah
Ellie Getz (January 11/12) is the daughter of Jaffray and Chris Getz; sister of Lauren: granddaughter of Richard and the late Bari Waldman Mintz and Robert and Karen Getz; and great granddaughter of Carl Waldman and the late Sallye Waldman and the late Dr. Aaron Mintz and Jo Mintz. Ellie is a seventh grader at the Emery Weiner School. For her Mitzvah project, Ellie is starting a nonprofit organization with her mom and one of her teachers called The Petal Collective, which will upcycle, recycle, and repurpose flowers from events around the city, as well as from florists excess weekly inventories, to deliver to patients in local hospitals and in-patient facilities. She will be donating a portion of her monetary gifts to Congregation Beth Yeshurun and the JCC to help with their post-Harvey recovery.
Harold Meier Turboff (February 22/23) is the son of Lisa and Phillip Turboff, the grandson of Harold and Carol Turboff of blessed memory, Dr. Morris E. Lepow of blessed memory and Esther Lepow of Houston and the sibling of Molly Elizabeth Turboff and Cameron Sara Turboff. Meier is a 7th grader at The Emery Weiner School. He participates in the performing arts. He recently played Eddie in the EWS middle school production of 13 and looks forward to playing Mr. Punch in the upcoming EWS all school production of Mary Poppins. Meier and his sister Molly are pet lovers with a history of adopting rescue animals. Their mitzvah project is volunteering at Houston Pets Alive, a no kill animal shelter. Molly and Meier are excited to be sharing this special day with their friend, Sara Rozen.
Micah Levin (February 2) is the son of Doron Levin and Laurie Maloney; brother of Jacob and Juliet; and grandson of Leorah and Jack Levin and Sarna and Bill Sunshine. Micah is a graduate of Beth Yeshurun Day School and currently attends Emery/ Weiner School. For his Mitzvah project Micah is composing and performing an original song with all sponsorship proceeds being donated to the Houston SPCA. (If you wish to donate, please contact Micah’s parents.)
Molly Elizabeth Turboff (February 22/23) is the daughter of Lisa and Phillip Turboff, the granddaughter of Harold and Carol Turboff of blessed memory, Dr. Morris E. Lepow of blessed memory and Esther Lepow of Houston and the sibling of Harold Meier Turboff and Cameron Sara Turboff. Molly is a 7th grader at The Emery Weiner School. Molly participates in the visual arts and sports and was the 7th grade captain of her volleyball team. Molly and Meier are pet lovers with a history of adopting rescue animals. Their mitzvah project is volunteering at Houston Pets Alive, a no kill animal shelter. Molly and Meier are excited to be sharing this special day with their friend, Sara Rozen.
Eli Karpas (February 8/9) is the son of Carolyn Rubenstein and Steven Karpas, brother of Isabel, Eliana, Zach and Shane Lerner. He is the grandson of Bo & Rikki Rubenstein and Rene and the late Ivor Karpas. For his Mitzvah project, Eli sold honey cakes with his Uncle Neville and cousin Cory Rubenstein (his B’nai Mitzvah partner) to help raise money for Celebration Company. In addition, he volunteered at the Aishel House working in the kitchen to make warm meals for visiting patients and their families. Eli will be donating a portion of his monetary gifts to both Celebration Company and Aishel House. Cory Dunn Rubenstein (February 8/9) is the son of Randi and Scott Rubenstein; brother of Alec and Avery; grandson of Barbara and Tom Dunn and Rikki and Bo Rubenstein. Cory attends The Emery Weiner School. For his Mitzvah Project, he and his cousin Eli volunteered with Celebration Company and they will each donate 10% of their monetary gifts to this organization.
Sara Rozen (February 22/23) is the daughter of Ariel and Ira Rozen and the granddaughter of Jerry and Phyllis Rozen of Houston, TX and Michael and Marsha Lustigman of Montreal, Canada. Sara also has an older brother, Benjamin and a younger sister, Maya. Sara is a 7th grader at Pin Oak Middle school where she participates in choir and theatre and this year, she will be starring in the school’s production of Annie Jr. Sara is an avid reader and as such, it will come as no surprise to those who know her best that she chose Books Between Kids as her Mitzvah Project. Sara is excited to be sharing this special day with her good friends Molly and Meier Turboff.

Jews By Choice: Join us for Sunday Brunch! Your passion for Judaism is (thank goodness) contagious. Your becoming part of the Jewish people has enriched our community. And now we want to find a way to do something to give back to you, to offer something more for your commitment and support. We are planning three special Sunday morning brunches just for you on February 10, March 31, and April 28. Whats the plan? First, you will have an opportunity to meet with other Jews by Choice who have joined over the past several years.There will be some informal socializing time to get to know others who may have similar interests or are in similar stages of life (newly married, with kids of different ages, or empty-nesters, etc.). Second, we want to hear from you what your experience has been since becoming Jewish. In small groups (around a table) you will have an opportunity to share whatever you are comfortable sharing about reactions from others (family, friends, other Jews). This may be a useful opportunity to share ideas with others who can identify with your spiritual journey. Third, we would like to learn from you what else we can do for you. Perhaps you want to engage with our Sisterhood, or 100 Jewish Men, or be more involved in one of our new Social Action programs, or do Jewish mindfulness meditation. Or, you may want to learn more about Jewish prayers, or how to cook Jewish foods, or prepare for certain Jewish holidays, or learn Hebrew.
