for those who care about us, and those whom we care about.

The great Sage, Moses Maimonides, lived 900 years ago but seems to have understood all this better than many people who live in our own day. He says there are two qualities that define a real friend: First, a friend is someone you can turn to for help and who will know what hurts you even before you tell him.

I can’t imagine ever having that kind of emotional intimacy with someone on Facebook.

But secondly, Maimonides adds that a real friend must be someone with whom you can share your innermost yearnings, your fears and your hopes, and your goals, and not be afraid that he or she will make fun of them or not take them seriously.

How many friends do you have to whom you can reveal your innermost yearnings, and your deepest concerns?

I must tell you that if you have one or two or maybe even three such people in your life, you are very blessed and very rich indeed.

And that is why real friends are so rare and so hard to find.

That is why you may have a couple of hundred names on your list of ‘friends’ on Facebook, but you are fortunate and blessed indeed if you have more than two or three real friends in your entire lifetime.

My wish is in this new year that now begins, may you have a friend whose hand you can hold and whose heart you can touch. Someone with whom you can be close and say anything and feel safe.

Say hello to Cuddle Parties. No, this is not a new Beth Yeshurun program, but, according to the Houston Chronicle, a new way for young people to meet, touch and be cuddled in groups of 20 by people they don’t even know.

Cuddle Parties, according to the Chronicle, are “the little-known parties warming up basements, studios and event spaces across the country, capitalizing on a culture that has drawn more people into electronic devices, texting and dating apps and further away from personal human contact.”

In a way, I suppose I should be heartened. You can have hundreds of “friends” on Facebook, but ultimately, even many of our young people understand it’s not the same as having one real friend with whom we can share touches and talk face-to-face.

Every week, when I walk into my class of high school seniors, my students are typically sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, quietly, each one texting friends on their cell phones. No one, though, is talking to a classmate though they are seated only inches apart.

In essence, the word “friend” no longer necessarily means someone you really know or care about, but can mean anyone.

As one of our youngsters bragged, he has 350+ “friends.”

Annual Inclusion Shabbat Feb. 17th

Inclusion Shabbat will be held on Friday, February 17, during the Shabbat Renewal service. The Congregation and the Committee for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities will be honoring Anita and Al Mattis, who over the years have been great supporters of our Inclusion Program by giving their time, energy and financial support (especially being one of the first to donate for the purchase of automatic doors for our restrooms). Additionally, whenever a Beth Yeshurun Committee needs some help, Anita and Al are there. They have been great assets to our Family Day programs - whether in Hermann Park, the Museum of Natural Science, or last year in The Zone. They volunteer at our Open House program and the Gathering Place. They volunteer and volunteer - never asking for recognition.

Alan Hirshman, a longtime member of our Inclusion Committee, will be our guest speaker. He will tell us about his son, Steven, and the interesting and unique experiences he, Susan and Steven have had over the years.

This will be the seventh year that Beth Yeshurun and the Inclusion Committee have presented and sponsored Inclusion Shabbat whose purpose includes, among other things, to raise the consciousness of our congregational family and the community to the issues of people with disabilities and how many of these individuals have turned their disabilities into abilities by becoming productive members of our community.

Bar Mitzvah

Many of our J.B. Greenfield Chapel worshipers have been coming for many years; some of them have been there for decades. But we have new folks joining us as well, and they often make an incredible difference.

When Dr. Stephen Tew began Rabbi Horwitz attending our services, he was very much like many people who come for the first time. He didn’t know the order or the meaning of the prayers; his Hebrew reading was halting, and he followed the service with difficulty. But in a few years, he came a long way.

Within a couple of years, he could lead a portion of the morning service. And now, a few years later, he can lead most of the weekday, Shabbat and Festival services... and he might be learning one of the High Holiday services soon!

Dr. Tew is an example and an inspiration to all of us in the Greenfield Chapel. That is why he was chosen as our 2016 Steve Rudoff Memorial Minyanaire of the Year.

We hope that some of you will be among the “new folks” joining us in the months and years to come. You can learn more than you ever imagined!

Zachary Evan Harris (Febuary 24/25‑) is the son of Tandy and Jonathan Harris; brother of Daniel; and the grandson of Martin and Judy Harris, Sheila Camberg, and Michael and Caryl Camberg, both of blessed memory. Zach attends The Briarwood School. For his Mitzvah Project, he delivered meals to homebound seniors through Interfaith Ministries. All Are Welcome in the Kaplan Museum The Museum Committee, chaired

by Daniel Musher, is very excited to announce that the Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica is now open to the public from 10:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. This important accomplishment for the Congregation, the Museum, the Jewish and the non-Jewish public resulted from collaboration with the Security and Executive Committees.

This important collection of Judaica, consisting of pieces from the 17th to the early 20th centuries, includes many rare and beautiful items and may well be the largest Judaica museum in the US outside of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago!

Items on regular display are categorized as: (1) Torah (miniature Torah scrolls, Torah ornaments); (2) Sabbath (Sabbath lamps, Kiddush cups, Havdalah spice boxes and candle holders); (3) Daily Life (tefillin cases, mezuzot, Yiddish cookbooks); (4) Life Cycle Events (ketubahs, marriage rings, memorial plaques and lamps); (5) Passover (seder plates, matzah roller,

Kiddush cups); (6) Purim (illuminated megillot, graggers); (7) Sukkot (traditional decorations for home sukkot, etrog boxes; and (8) Hanukah (menorahs from 18th, 19th and 20th centuries). Our large collection of artwork includes series of lithographs by Rubin, Agam, Weil, ManeKatz and Pann, as well as oil paintings and posters. Most notable is the full suite of lithographs illustrating the opening section of Genesis by Abel Pann (Jerusalem, 1920’s).

The Museum has always been, and continues to be, open to members of the Congregation whenever the building is open. Non-members who wish to visit can request complimentary tickets online by clicking on the “Learn” tab at BETHYESHURUN.ORG.
