Welcome our new Religious School Administrative Assistant
Lauren Federow
We are pleased to welcome Lauren Federow to Congregation Beth Yeshurun. She is the new Administrative Assistant in the Religious School Office. Lauren is a diplomat’s daughter and grew up in several countries, primarily in Central America. She is part of a large family and is the 3rd of seven children. Her family moved to Texas in 1997 and have never left. Lauren started working as a nanny at age 14 and continued that for about eight years. She taught preschool in the Houston area for seven years, and she is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree. The Religious School position feels like a fabulous fit to Lauren as she gets to participate in education without being in the classroom and has a variety of responsibilities. She is also enjoying learning more about Judaism. Lauren is newly married. In their spare time, they love reading, ballroom dancing, and getting together with friends for game nights.

Cemetery lot price increase
The Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association maintains two cemeteries – the more traditional Allen Parkway cemetery location and the newer and recently enlarged Post Oak Cemetery at 1037 North Post Oak Road. There are few gravesites available for sale at Allen Parkway at this time. The Post Oak location, with its new addition, should take care of our needs for many years to come. Buying a cemetery plot is never an easy decision and many people choose to procrastinate. There is, however, a certain peace of mind in making definite plans, knowing that we can ease some of the stress and anguish for our families at the time of need. We suggest you plan ahead and make these difficult decisions at a time when the family is not in crisis. Beth Yeshurun’s cemetery plot prices have remained constant for the past four years. Birth Avi and Heather Rasowsky are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Shayla Natania Rasowsky. Shayla was born December 10, 2015. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces and was 20 inches long. Her name means “gift of G-d.” Shayla’s big brothers are Adley (3½) and Cyrus (2).

Dr. Rothman - Minyanaire of the Year! We are fortunate to have many people who are committed to our daily minyan and participate regularly. But some of them stand out and deserve special recognition. We can’t honor all of them in the way we should, but several years ago we created the Minyanaire of the Year award to acknowledge some of Rabbi Horwitz these very special participants. On December 19, we announced that Dr. Irving Rothman is our 2015 honoree. Dr. Rothman is a regular participant in Shabbat services, and frequently chants the haftarah in the Greenfield Chapel. But he is also in the Chapel for minyan almost every evening! While he continues a very active and productive academic life teaching at the University of Houston, he also has an active spiritual life at Beth Yeshurun. And we are very lucky to have him here! Not so long ago, Dr. Rothman was honored on the occasion of his 80th birthday. In Pirkei Avot, we are taught that ben shmonim la-gevurah, eighty is the age of strength. In Dr. Rothman’s case, that is certainly true, and his strength contributes to our own. Mazel Tov, Dr. Rothman, to a hundred and twenty! Rabbi Daniel Horwitz 15

Donations Beth Yeshurun is a community institution with a vital mission: to educate children and adults, to offer spiritual experiences that inspire and uplift all ages, and to provide a setting in which Judaism can be joyously lived and experienced.
