When I was 14, I loved sports, all sports, but I couldn’t play any of them worth a hoot. None of my Jewish friends could or did; we thought it was genetic.

But I loved reading about sports and listening to the Houston Colt .45’s games on the radio. In 1965, two amazing things happened: My beloved Colt .45’s became the Houston Astros. And in 1965, I discovered the first hero of

my life: Sandy Koufax.

In that very year, as the Los Angeles Dodgers prepared to play the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis in the World Series, Sandy Koufax announced he would skip his place in the pitching rotation on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and stay home.

As a young Jewish boy, I couldn’t believe it. I loved being Jewish, but I didn’t like making too big a deal of it. But now, America’s premiere pitcher was telling the entire world that he couldn’t play in the most important sporting event in the world because he was Jewish.

And what he did in faraway Minnesota touched and changed me and other boys my age here and across America in ways I still remember 50 years later.

Suddenly I saw that being Jewish was really important; it had to be to keep Sandy Koufax off the mound that day.

If Sandy Koufax thought being Jewish was important enough to tell the whole world, then there had to be more to it than maybe I realized. It meant it was alright to be proud of it, to stand up for it, to tell our friends at school about it and not wince.

Sandy Koufax became a role model for me and countless other boys my age, and to this very day, a half-century later, that decision by him still leaves a warm feeling for him in my heart.

Yes, there are wonderful men like J.J. Watt, the defensive end for the Houston Texans. J.J. has become a tremendous role model for many of our young people. But our Jewish kids need Jewish role models too.

We need such figures in our world, men and women who our Jewish children can look up to and see their pride in their Jewish heritage, their joy in acknowledging our holy days; men and women who can have a transformational impact on our kids’ Jewish identifies and self-respect. Men who had the kind of impact Sandy Koufax had on me and a whole generation of Jewish boys.

Today there’s a shortage, I’m afraid, of Jewish athletes who can fill that role. But thankfully, there’s no shortage of proud parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles who can be there for our kids. I pray that all of our youngsters can find that person, a hero, who can stick in our kids’ minds and be the lasting influence that Sandy Koufax has been to me.

Cemetery lot price increase

The Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association maintains two cemeteries – the more traditional Allen Parkway cemetery location and the newer and recently enlarged Post Oak Cemetery at 1037 North Post Oak Road. There are few gravesites available for sale at Allen Parkway at this time. The Post Oak location, with its new addition, should take care of our needs for many years to come.

Buying a cemetery plot is never an easy decision and many people choose to procrastinate. There is, however, a certain peace of mind in making definite plans, knowing that we can ease some of the stress and anguish for our families at the time of need. We suggest you plan ahead and make these difficult decisions at a time when the family is not in crisis.

Beth Yeshurun’s cemetery plot prices have remained constant for the past four years. Due to rising costs, the Cemetery Association has voted to increase the prices as of March 1, 2016. The new schedule of prices is as follows:

- Minyanaire Shabbat

On Shabbat morning, December 19, we will recognize and pay tribute to all who maintain our daily services in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel. Attendees of the Chapel and Museum Minyan services are invited to join with the Sanctuary service at the conclusion of services in Freedman-Levit. Our speaker will be Pam Penn, who has been participating in our weekday minyan this year. We will also acknowledge our previous honorees as “Minyanaire of the Year,” Jack Uzick and Filmore Cohen, and announce our “Minyanaire of the Year” for this year!

Sarah Michelle Lootens (December 4/5) is the daughter of Rochelle and Tim Lootens; sister of Rachel; and granddaughter of Gloria and the late Fred Schramm, Virginia Lootens Palmer and John Palmer, and Douglas and Molly Lootens. Sarah attends Cornerstone Academy. For her Mitzvah Project, Sarah decorated and assembled “Nosh” Bags that were for patients at M.D. Anderson Hospital.

Hanna Lynn Sweeden (December 11/12) is the daughter of Patricia and Chad Sweeden; sister of Sydney and Madison Sweeden; and granddaughter of Barbara and Sam Sakowitz, and Linda and Steven Houts. Hanna attends Lanier Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Hanna volunteered at the Houston Food Bank.

Jordan Andrew Sheldon (December 18/19) is the son of Linda and Steven Sheldon; brother of Koby Sheldon; and grandson of Carole and Dr. Gerald Sheldon, Dr. Mannie and Erika Magid, and the late Jeanette Magid. Jordan attends Pin Oak Middle School. For his Mitzvah Project, he made and decorated Shabbat Boxes for patients at Houston Methodist Hospital. Jordan will also participate in the Rabbi’s 10% Plan by donating a portion of his monetary gifts to the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation in honor of his late aunt, Naomi Sheldon.

Donations Beth Yeshurun is a community institution with a vital mission: to educate children and adults, to offer spiritual experiences that inspire and uplift all ages, and to provide a setting in which Judaism can be joyously lived and experienced.

We welcome your support. Online donations can be made at www.bethyeshurun.org. Donations may also be made in the synagogue office or by mail to Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut St., Houston, TX 77096-1801.

A minimum donation of $10 per listing is required to have your donation published in the weekly bulletin and a notification letter sent to the honoree or a deceased person’s family member. One such notification letter will be sent per donation. The deadline for donations to be published in the weekly bulletin is the previous Friday at 4:30pm. Donations are published upon submission and will not be “held” for future publication. When you make a donation to Beth Yeshurun, please be sure to provide all of the necessary information: who the donation is in memory of, who or what the donation is in honor of, who needs to be notified of the donation (name and complete address) and by whom the donation is given. When this information is incomplete, we are unable to process your donation efficiently. Donations with no specific fund indicated will be credited to the Synagogue General Fund.
