building to its side entrance. As she proceeded, she suddenly fell and was unable to pick herself up. She called out for help, but apparently no one was outside to hear her.

Fortunately she was wearing a Lifeline pendant. As soon as she pushed the button, a voice asked her where she was and what was wrong. The Lifeline representative called the home and 911. Within minutes, our member was being cared for by attendants from her facility and by trained emergency staff.

Lifeline is but one of many companies that provide small devices that can be worn like a necklace or clipped to one’s clothes. These devices generally all work the same way: • When our loved one pushes the button, a personal representative immediately pulls up the caller’s record on a computer screen so that he knows who he is dealing with and what family members need to be contacted.

• Second, the person in distress is spoken to directly. They don’t need to be near a phone or know how to operate a complicated piece of technology.

• Third, relatives and friends on the emergency contact list are immediately contacted so they can render help. If necessary, 911 is called as well.

If you have a loved one who lives alone and who may be a bit shaky on his or her feet, I recommend Lifeline and similar devices very, very much.

These devices are available through many places in our community and online, but I recommend obtaining it through our own Jewish Family Service. The Lifeline service costs the same through JFS as anywhere else, but JFS also provides a monthly call to your loved one to see how he or she is doing and to make sure everything is alright.

Yes, we may joke about the commercials where the elderly woman cries, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”—but it’s no joke when it’s your own mother or father.

I firmly believe devices like Lifeline can be life savers.

From the Rabbi Rabbi David Rosen Lifeline can be a “Lifesaver” I don’t normally endorse commercial products, but the recent experiences of two Beth Yeshurun families has convinced me to break my rule. One morning last month I received a phone call from a member telling me that her elderly mother had been rushed to the emergency room. It turned out that her mom had gotten up during the night and had fallen in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the woman was unable to pick herself up and, for six hours, she waited on the floor with what turned out to be a broken hip.When the caregiver finally arrived, she called 911 and an ambulance came minutes later.

I have not been able to shake from my mind the image of our member’s mother suffering for all those hours in such pain, especially because I know of other families where similar incidents have had a very different resolution.

Another of our older members was dropped off one evening near the front door of her very nice assisted-living facility. As she reached for the front door, the people who had dropped her off assumed she would walk right in and so they drove off.

It was during this time she realized she loved it and these experiences led to her desire to become a rabbi. It is a strength and a passion of hers to curate experiences for people to explore their Judaism.

If you haven’t met Rabbi Fort yet, please introduce yourself. (If you have a dog, be sure to tell her all about him/her. She LOVES dogs, but has none of her own - yet!)

Assistant Rabbi

Our new rabbi is here! Please welcome Rabbi Sarah Fort, our new Assistant Rabbi, to CBY. Rabbi Fort is a native of the D.C. area and grew up in a congregation so similar to Beth Yeshurun that she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of it! Her parents and younger brother live in Fairfax, VA. Rabbi Fort is a graduate of George Mason University and of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, where she met her husband and fellow rabbinical student, Rabbi Ariel Sholklapper. Rabbi Sholklapper is currently the Director of Development & Communications for the new Ramah of Northern California: Ramah Galim.

As Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Fort will take on the full range of worship, pastoral and life-cycle responsibilities with a special emphasis on the engagement of our young adults and families.

(She used to be an assistant Pre-School teacher and can sing a mean David Melech Yisrael - with hand motions!) She’ll work with the Religious School and BYDS, and teach in Kehillah High and the Jewish Learning Project. She’s looking forward to collaborating with Cantor Diane Dorf in the Jr. Congregation program and is very excited to pilot a program for teen girls here at CBY which she worked with during her internship. And this is only the beginning!

While in college, Rabbi Fort was very involved in Hillel to the point of acting as Rabbi, developing programming and relationships.

Riana Sherman

Program Director Congregation Beth Yeshurun is excited to welcome Riana Sherman as the synagogue’s new Program Director. Riana comes to us with many connections to the Houston Jewish community. Riana is no stranger to BY as she has been working at Beth Yeshurun Day School for 9 years, both as a teacher and most recently as the Early Childhood Principal. She has years of experience planning programs for “children” of all ages through her work at Congregation Emanu El, Greene Family Camp, Beth Yeshurun Day School, to only name a few. Riana met her husband Greg at a Jewish summer camp. They have two children: Gavin and Jillian. Both of the children attend Beth Yeshurun Day School. Riana is looking forward to making connections with the community and helping Beth Yeshurun reach new heights.

Wednesday, January 17 Medicine after the Holocaust with Dr. Sheldon Rubenfeld Nazi doctors, the best in the world at the time, played a central role in the design and implementation of the Holocaust as they attempted to accelerate Darwin's theory of natural selection and quickly develop a Master Race. The USA, the world's leader in eugenics, provided moral, legislative and philanthropic models for the Nazi political program of Applied Biology. There are many challenging lessons to be learned from the medical ethics of the Holocaust and America's response to the Nuremberg Doctor's Trial and the Nuremberg Code. Sheldon Rubenfeld, MD, FACP, FACE is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Executive Director of the Center for Medicine after the Holocaust.

Wednesday, February 21 A Night with Spencer Tillman at Kenny & Ziggy's (Galleria Location) After an eight-year career in the NFL, Spencer Tillman now serves as the lead studio analyst for CBS Sports coverage of College Football Today and the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament. In the past, he was sports anchor for KPRC-TV Houston. Tillman published his first book, Scoring the Red Zone: How to Lead Successfully When the Pressure is On, in 2005. A freshman all-American running back for the University of Oklahoma, Tillman was captain of the 1985 national championship team. In 1987, Tillman was drafted from the Sooners by the Houston Oilers where he played for two seasons.

ONE HUNDRED JEWISH MEN 2017-2018 16th Year 100 Jewish Men is a group of men dedicated to improving themselves and each other as men, fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends and Jews. Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers and small group discussions, we will explore what usually remains unspoken in men's lives at work and at home. We have an incredible year planned and we hope you choose to be part of it. All programs are held at CBY unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday, October 19 Mitzvot & Miracles with Michael Segal Significant other invited After sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in 1981 at age 19, CBY member, Michael Jordan Segal, defied all odds by first surviving, then becoming a positive productive member of society. His life changed forever when he was shot in the head as a sophomore in college. Mike still graduated with high honors from the University of Texas and completed graduate school where he received his MSW. He has many disabilities as a result; however, he shows families and patients at a Trauma Hospital in Houston (as well as others when he lectures throughout the country) that even though life is "different," it can be full and joyous. Mike is an active member of CBY and has shared his story of recovery throughout the country.

One of the biggest "miracles" of all is his family: his wife Sharon, daughter Shawn, parents Rabbi Jack and Toby Segal, siblings with their wives, in-laws, Sharon's siblings ... Wednesday, November 15 Israel: A Future Vision with Dr. Steven Bayme Israel and the Jewish people are undergoing significant evolution in terms of their respective demographics, politics and identity.

American Jews and Israelis appear to be pulling away from one another towards respective possibly irreconcilable poles of universal values of liberalism and particularistic values of survivalism. From the 1950s "Israel in need" model to the "heroic" model of Exodus and the Six Day War to current ambivalence re "occupation" and a looming Haredi demographic ascendency, American Jews have differed over how they perceive Israel as a state of the Jewish people. In this session we will attempt to delineate what American Jews mean by a Jewish state and probe how that vision compares (or those visions compare) with Israel's current and future realities. Dr. Steven Bayme serves as Director of the Contemporary Jewish Life Department of the American Jewish Committee and of the Koppelman Institute on American JewishIsraeli Relations. He has a PhD in Jewish history from Columbia University. He has been widely cited in the media on Jewish communal issues and was profiled in Lifestyles magazine. Three times he has been named in the Forward's annual list of the top 50 Jewish leaders who "make a difference."

Wednesday, December 6 Is it really safe to travel? with Dr. Peter Tarlow at Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar Dr. Peter Tarlow will discuss challenges the West is facing regarding tourism and terrorism and provide insights into safe travel practices. Tarlow was director and rabbi of Texas A&M Hillel for 30 years. He is a world-renowned speaker and expert specializing in the impact of crime and terrorism on the tourism industry. Since 1990, Tarlow has taught courses on Tourism, Crime and Terrorism to police forces and both security and tourism professionals throughout the world.

Tarlow has worked with numerous US government agencies including US Customs, FBI agents for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and the US Dept. of Homeland Security. He has also worked with Vancouver's Justice Institute (preparing for the 2010 Olympic Games), and with police departments of the state of Rio de Janeiro (for the 2014 World Cup Games). Tarlow is a contributing author to multiple books on tourism security, and publishes numerous academic and applied research articles regarding issues of security.

In the Sands of Sinai - a Physician's Account of the Yom Kippur War

with Dr. Itzhak Brook Our captivating speaker will present a description of the historical background of the Yom Kippur War and its effects on the Israeli society, as well as his own personal experiences and challenges as a battalion physician in the Sinai. He plans to speak on the physical and psychological traumas his soldiers had to cope with, the effect of religion on them, the cost of war in human life and suffering, and the daily struggle for survival in the difficult war which threatened Israel's existence. Itzhak Brook, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He served in the Israeli army as a medic in the Six Day War in 1967 and as a battalion physician during the Yom Kippur war in 1973. He served in the medical corps of the US Navy for 27 years. Brook has authored several hundred publications in scientific journals and ten textbooks. Brook is a speaker for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC on the Yom Kippur War. In order for the child care to run smoothly, all children's belongings must be labeled. Babies will not be fed by staff - parents need to come to the child care area to feed their babies. 10 Commandments live on the bimah at CBY! This past Shavuot witnessed happy festivities to celebrate the festive yom tov. With all our services gathering together on the first day in the Greenfield Chapel, children gave a lively performance from the bimah – re-enacting the receiving of the Ten Commandments on Sinai. As our tradition tells us: we each stood at Sinai. Children wearing impromptu costumes lent drama – and humor – to the occasion as they recited their lines.

Cantor Diane Dorf wrote the lively script and directed its production.

The play was the culmination of a morning of childrens’ activities.

Children celebrated the holiday by parading up to the bimah with baskets: the tradition of bikkurim, offering the first fruits of the barley harvest. Tobi Cooper organized the bikkurim, collecting food items to donate to the food bank. Cooper provided decorative baskets filled with paper flowers and she made crowns for the youngest children.

Children enjoyed their own showing of the Ten Commandments skit, learned the stories of Shavuot, played games and sang songs before joining the congregation in Greenfield Chapel. Older children joined Rabbi Horwitz in leading Hallel during the morning service.

Hearty thanks to Tobi Cooper and Cantor Diane Dorf for their creative and energetic efforts that added to Beth Yeshurun’s enjoyment of Shavuot! Thank you also to our rabbis for their support.

New weekly Shabbat Theater for kids!

We’re excited to announce that, following upon the success o f t h e S h a v u o t / Te n Commandments experience, Cantor Diane Dor f has generously offered to lead a new Shabbat Theater program for Museum Minyan and all congregational kids. As Shabbat Theater suggests, children will act Talia & Jacob Schwartz act out a parashat out the Torah portion, yom tov and festival themes. No prior acting experience is needed – only a desire to participate and have fun as you celebrate Shabbat.

Tobi Cooper leads our wonderful Shabbat Shalom program for younger children. This new Shabbat Theater program is designed for children in Grades 2-5. Shabbat Theater will begin with the new school year. This is a Museum Minyan program open to all of Beth Yeshurun. All children in Grades 2-5 are heartily encouraged to join in. Many thanks go to Cantor Diane Dorf for her creative and energetic program, and to Rabbi Brian Strauss for his support.

Preparing our scrolls for the High Holy Days Recently, Rabbi Yochanan Salazar, a Master Sofer with Sofer on Site arrived at Beth Yeshurun to examine our Torah and Haftarah scrolls and perform any needed repairs.

Hundreds of laws govern the most minute details of writing a Sefer Torah - from the materials used to the actual writing. It takes an expert scribe anywhere from eight months to over a year to write a complete single Torah scroll.

A Sofer is a Jewish scholar (usually an ordained rabbi) who has studied and mastered the art and the laws pertaining to scribing and restoring a Torah, tefillin and/or mezuzot. They are also trained in the art and history of Torah scribing. While you will never find a scribe’s signature or a marking to identify where and when a Torah was written, the style and make of the parchment, the way the seams are stitched together and, of course, the style of script all add up to reveal the origins of a particular scroll.

HHD Freedman-Levit Choir

B’nai Mitzvah

Dear Congregants, I love surprises and this year the Freedman-Levit High Holy Day service will be complete with surprises. You will get the beautiful traditions of the holidays plus an experience that will combine the inspiration of our traditions along with innovation.

You will also have the opportunity to meet our new Rabbi, Sarah Fort. She is delightful and will share the podium with Rabbi Strauss and me during our services. Going into its 43rd year, the Freedman-Levit Contemporary High Holy Day service is a full adult service geared to the time frames of families with children.

If you have ever considered being part of the choir, this is definitely the year to do it. Through the years, the family choir has grown to include parents and children and will participate in the following services in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary: Rosh Hashanah, September 20th and 21st, Kol Nidre, September 29th and Yom Kippur day, September 30th through Yizkor. In addition, the choir will also be an integral part of the teenage Minhah service later in the afternoon on Yom Kippur day in the Barg Sanctuary.

We will have an initial rehearsal on Sunday, August 20th from 4:30-6:00pm. If it is impossible to attend, please let me know your intentions and I will see you the following rehearsal, which will take place on Wednesday, August 23rd from 6:30-7:30pm. Typically, we meet for 1 ½ hours on Sundays and 1 hour on weekdays. Most of the rehearsals will take place in Stein Hall. You will be notified of changes and we will confirm all rehearsals by email after the first rehearsal.

“Straight-up” worship There’s a significant but little-known Jewish practice: we don’t usually bow while pronouncing the holy Name of God. We do bow at different times, during the Amidah and Aleinu. But not when saying the Name. For that moment, we stand straight before God. The Psalmist described God as zokef kefufim, One who raises up those who are bent over. And we have made that phrase one of the berakhot recited at the Rabbi Horwitz beginning of the daily service.

No one should have a self-image so deficient that they think it is normal to be without resources, to be at the mercy of those who might reduce their dignity. For centuries it was normal for Jews to be without a homeland, and many otherwise distinguished Jewish thinkers accepted the idea that we were to blame for this, and that only the Messiah would change it. This left our people defenseless against the murderers in Europe.

Though the murderers still exist, the story is different today.

We are no longer helpless. But although God gives the Jewish people the power to live a life that is not “bent over,” it is up to us to stand straight. That is how God wants us to face Him, to declare His Name.
