From the Cantor The Cantor – a Very Brief History Cantor Meir Finkelstein
will have a degree in music education or in Jewish religious education or a related discipline.
From earliest times, the chief qualifications demanded of a Cantor, in addition to knowledge of Biblical and liturgical literature and all the prayer motifs, were a pleasant voice and an artistic delivery. The Cantor was required to possess a pleasing appearance, to be married, and to have a flowing beard. Our congregation should be relieved to know that their present Cantor possesses at least two of these qualities! Maimonides suggested that the Cantor who recited the prayers on an ordinary Shabbat and on weekdays need not possess an appearance pleasing to everybody; he might even have a reputation not wholly spotless, provided he was living a life morally free from reproach at the time of his appointment. But all these moderations of the rules disappeared on holidays. Then, an especially worthy Cantor was demanded, one whose life was absolutely irreproachable, who was generally popular, and who was endowed with an expressive delivery.
The role of Cantor as a respected full-time profession has only become a reality in recent centuries. From the early 1800s, Jews in a number of European communities, notably Germany and Britain, came to view professionally trained Cantors as clergy. After the enlightenment, when European nations gave full citizenship and civil rights to Jews, professionally trained Cantors were accepted by the secular governments as clergy in the same way as Rabbis. In a paradoxical turn of events, the United States government recognized Cantors as the first Jewish clergy, even before Rabbis were recognized. Before considering hiring a Rabbi, a congregation could be organized and led by a committee of Jewish laypersons, while the liturgy would be in the expert hands of a Cantor. Newly forming congregations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries sometimes only hired a Cantor, while also making sure that a kosher butcher was established in the neighborhood. It seems that a Cantor and a butcher were of a more immediate communal need than a Rabbi. Happily, here in Houston we have a number of kosher butchers, so I will be able to continue to do what I do best, and not have to worry about branching out into the meat industry!

B’nai Mitzvah Lillian “Lillie” Ruth Kleban (April 5/6) is the daughter of Janet and Daniel Kleban and the sister of David and Abigail. Lillie is the granddaughter of Judith Komorn and the late Robert Komorn of Houston, and the late Carol Kleban and the late Donald Kleban of New York. Lillie is a graduate of the Beth Yeshurun Day School and a seventh grade student at The Emery/Weiner School where she plays volleyball and soccer and is active in theatre.For her mitzvah project, Lillie volunteers at Seven Acres where she plays games with residents and assists the staff with events. Lillie will proudly donate a portion of her monetary gifts to continue the fight against cancer in memory of her two grandfathers. Lillie is excited to share her Bat Mitzvah with her lifelong friend, Lauren Miller, and is truly blessed to share this simcha with many relatives and friends. Lauren Miller (April 5/6) is the daughter of Dionne Miller and Bryan Miller; sister of Holden and Liam Miller; granddaughter of Lorraine and Robert Press and the late Louise and Hugh Miller. Friday, April 19, is the first night of Passover. Just about every Jew goes to a Seder that night. But there is another ritual on that day to which all of you are invited. On the morning before Passover, following the regular daily service, we hold a special ceremony in the Greenfield Chapel. We complete the study of a tractate of Talmud. This year, the siyyum will be on Masekhet Avodah Zara.
DETAILS MATTER.
Why do we do this now? Traditionally, the firstborn males fasted on the day before Passover, as an acknowledgment of their being spared in the plague of the firstborn in Egypt which occurred that day. Since it is a minor fast which only applies to a small subset of the Jewish people, participating in this joyous “siyyum” (completion ceremony) exempts the firstborn from the especially difficult fast before the Seder.
No matter how small, every detail that is important to you is important to us. With thorough and compassionate attention, we take care of the details so that you can focus on taking care of each other.
The J.B. Greenfield Chapel is there for happy occasions (the occasional baby naming, aufruf, and special birthday and anniversary celebrations) and for sad times, when our members come to recite Kaddish and remember loved ones. But it is also there for regular occasions, for all the days which fall on our Jewish calendar.

POST OAK CEMETERY CHAPEL UPDATE Shown below is the floor plan for the new indoor chapel to be built at the Post Oak Cemetery. The Chapel Hall will be approximately 4,000 sq. ft. There will be seating for about 200 people in pews and extra room to accommodate overflow. The family room will provide private space for about 15 people to gather before a funeral. The bimah will be slightly elevated. The restrooms will be accessible from both inside and outside of the chapel and the restrooms will be available for use during normal cemetery hours. There will be a covering over the front entrance and the family room entrance.
