From the Rabbi Rabbi Steven Morgen Let My People Learn!

Many people have told me how exciting our new Jewish Learning Project has been this year. We have had several new classes added to our Sunday morning program. We created a new JEWx Program which featured several short talks on a wide range of Jewish topics in one very special evening. We have had a few web-casted special programs from the 92nd Street Y in New York. And a number of other opportunities for learning were also added to our program.

We are starting to plan for next year’s program and we want to hear from you. If you have some interest in a particular topic you would like to learn about, or if you think we could gather a group of people together to learn in a different location or at a different time or day of the week, send me an email or give me a call. If you have any other ideas for how we can make learning more exciting, more engaging, more enriching, let me know.

Passover is coming. As we know, Passover is the holiday that celebrates the freedom of the Israelites from the tyranny of slavery. But, as we also know, we count the days between Passover and Shavuot – the holiday that celebrates the giving of the 10 Commandments, and by extension, the Torah. This period of 49 days in between the two holidays is called “the Omer”

because an “omer” (about a gallon) of barley was brought to the Temple each day during this time.

By counting the days between Passover and Shavuot we symbolically recognize that freedom alone was not sufficient to make us an independent people.

We were independent, but not a people. What defines us as a people is our Constitution, the laws and customs that define us – in short, the Torah.

And so it is for us today. What distinguishes us as a people is our Torah that defines our way of life. In order to fully appreciate who and what we are as Jews we need to constantly learn and grow in the wisdom of our tradition.

So this Passover, as we hold our Second Night Seder and count the first day of the Omer, let us make a sort of New Year Resolution to designate some time each day or each week to learning something new about what it means to be Jewish.

Whether we do it by reading a book, finding a webcast or article on the internet, or taking a class at Beth Yeshurun or the JCC. Feel free to drop me a note to let me know what you are learning, or if you would like some assistance picking a topic or resource, or if you want to make a suggestion for something we can offer at Beth Yeshurun.

After we say: Let my people go! And after we say: Let my people eat! Let’s add: Let my people learn!

What’s Happening in the William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies RS Students Helping Others

Fourth grade students Molli Kammerman, Riley Levine, Sarie Goodweather and Lauren Brams are shown making mini-nosh packages for Jewish Family Service.

Students in the Religious School and Sulam have recently participated in a variety of mitzvah projects to help others in the community and have enjoyed making a difference for others. The 4th and 5th grade students worked with Toby Brown from Jewish Family Service to package nosh packages for Jewish patients in MD Anderson’s waiting rooms. Kindergarten and 1st graders collected paper goods and toiletries for JFS that will be given to clients who need them. On Tu B’Shevat, 6th grade Religious School and 7th grade Sulam students volunteered in Hermann Park to beautify an area. Additionally, our 2nd graders decorated and packed mishloach manot to be given to the care partners attending The Gathering Place on Purim.

RS 5th Grade Mock Wedding

The 5th grade class held a mock wedding as part of their unit on the Jewish life cycle. Their parents and other grades were invited to attend the “wedding” of the “bride” Rebecca Bloome and “groom” David Anapolsky. All of the students had parts in the ceremony, and it was a great way for the students to learn the various elements found in a Jewish wedding. The ceremony was followed by a reception with dancing and cupcakes.

Are you in special need of a Rabbi?

Friday, April 22, is the first night of Passover. Just about every Jew goes to a Seder that night. But there is another ritual on that day to which all of you are invited.

On the morning before Passover, following the regular daily service, we hold a special ceremony in the Greenfield Chapel. We Rabbi Horwitz complete the study of a tractate of Talmud.

This year, the siyyum will be on Masekhet Ta’anit.

Why do we do this now? Traditionally, the firstborn males fasted on the day before Passover, as an acknowledgment of their being spared in the plague of the firstborn in Egypt which occurred that day. Since it is a minor fast which only applies to a small subset of the Jewish people, participating in this joyous “siyyum” (completion ceremony) exempts the firstborn from the especially difficult fast before the Seder.

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel is there for happy occasions (the occasional babynaming, aufruf, and special birthday and anniversary celebrations) and for sad times, when our members come to recite Kaddish and remember loved ones.

But it is also there for regular occasions, for all the days which fall on our Jewish calendar.

Even if you are not a firstborn male, you are welcome to join us for the siyyum and the breakfast afterwards. Special thanks to Paul Katz and our Beth Yeshurun Brotherhood for sponsoring this special breakfast!

The Universality of Groups Irving Yalom, known as “The Father of Group Therapy,” coined a phrase, “the universality of a group.” People coming together for a common reason, often feel better after sharing their feelings in a group. Validation and trust, safety and experiencing mutual sharing with the community can be healing.

When people are isolated and alone in their struggles it is more difficult to regain their strengths and find the path towards healing.

In the three groups that have been recently launched at The Beth Yeshurun Healing Center, the common theme of loss is a profound one.

Meeting together and sharing our feelings about loss is a means to reaching out to others. The support and love that surrounds us is powerful. Our goal is to continue this journey together and find our way as individuals and as a community.

The Gathering Place Celebrates it’s 4th Birthday!

Monthly fun for people with memory loss Read all about it!

Where can you find fun conversations, chair Tai Chi, arts and crafts, entertainment, singing, Bingo with prizes, games, snacks and a delicious kosher lunch all in one location for FREE? The answer is Stein Hall at Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Beth Yeshurun has partnered with Interfaith Care Partners to host the Gathering Place once a month from 10:00-1:30.

It is a program designed for people with memory loss for a variety of reasons.

Tom Breaux, Vice President of Interfaith Care Partners, has been at every Gathering since we started in October of 2011.

The program is staffed by an amazing group of dedicated volunteers who do many different jobs to make everyone’s day wonderful. At the end of the day we have created many smiles. With the approach of the Passover/Shavuot season, we recall the everlasting attachments to our beloved relatives and friends who have departed. We remember the bonds of kinship and friendship that linked their lives to ours.

IN MEMORIAM is dedicated in reverent and grateful tribute to the loyal and courageous pioneers of Traditional Judaism, whose names will be forever enshrined in our hearts and in the annals of Beth Yeshurun.

Yizkor will be recited in the morning on Saturday, April 30, 2016. To assure that the IN MEMORIAM book is printed and ready for distribution, all names to be memorialized must be submitted on the form below to arrive in the synagogue office by Friday, April 1st. Names received after April 1, 2016 cannot be printed in the memorial book, but will be included on an addendum sheet.

B’nai Mitzvah Kayla Nicole Frank (April 8/9) is the daughter of Candice and John Frank; sister of Colin Frank; granddaughter of Sue and John Goott, Fran and Hank Antosz, Richard Frank, and Bernard Ginsberg. Kayla attends The Emery/ Weiner School. For her Mitzvah Project, Kayla volunteers at Barc, where she helps prepare dogs for potential adoption. Kayla will also participate in the Rabbi’s 10% plan by donating a portion of her monetary gifts to Seven Acres in memory of her great-grandmother, Minda Hirsch, and to Hatzolah in South Africa, in memory of her great-grandmother, Betty Goott, both of whom passed away last year.

Joshua Ruben Cororve (April 15/16) is the son of Nirayl and Brian Cororve; brother of Leah and Miriam Cororve; grandson of Carol and Lester Sternberg, and Susan and Dr. Alan Cororve. The Bar Mitzvah will take place at Camp Young Judaea in Wimberley, Texas. Joshua attends Xavier Academy. For his Mitzvah Project, Joshua will be raising funds to fight childhood cancer benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Foundation by hosting a lemonade stand in honor of Maya Rigler. Joshua will be donating 10% of his monetary gifts to Camp Ramah in Ojai, California and the Humane Society in Houston.

Applications are now being accepted at JFS for 2016-2017 College Year.

Jewish Family Service is accepting applications for both the Nathan and Sarah Klein Fund for Interest-Free Student loans and the Lloyd & Morissa (of blessed memory) Parkans Scholarship Fund for the 2016-2017 academic year.

DEADLINE FOR BOTH IS JUNE 3, 2016.

Students seeking the Parkans Jewish Family Service Scholarship should be local Jewish students who will be attending a four-year college or university in the fall of 2016. These students should have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, community involvement and admirable personal attributes. This scholarship will provide resources to enable an undergraduate student to realize his or her potential through academic achievement .

Local students seeking the interest –free student loans from the Klein Fund with demonstrated financial need may receive assistance with educational and living expenses in undergraduate, graduate school, and trade school programs.

(Note a limited number of loans are available for trade school.)

Jewish Family Service works in partnership with Hebrew Free Loan Association to provide additional resources for graduate and trade school students seeking loans.

Cancer Survivors’ Shabbat Friday, June 6 6:00pm FNA! Celebrate the lives of cancer survivors with us at a special Friday Night Alive! service at 6:00pm, June 6. Rabbi Rosen will offer a special blessing for anyone touched by cancer, and for all of our cancer survivors. We are pleased to offer this service in collaboration with CanCare, Inc., of which we have been a member since 2001.

CanCare Inc. is a non-profit, interfaith organization that offers one-on-one emotional support for cancer patients and their families. CanCare’s mission is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Trained CanCare volunteers are connected to individuals dealing with the same cancer, same or similar treatment, age, gender and family situation. As survivors and experienced family caregivers, they understand what it takes to fight this disease and, while doing so, keep HOPE alive. CanCare volunteers help you understand what to expect, discuss side effects of treatment, recommend information and resources, and listen to your fears or concerns. Each CanCare volunteer is a living symbol of someone who has overcome similar challenges.

The Simcha Tree was designed by Edwin C. Balis and Associates of Donora, PA, and specially adapted for Beth Yeshurun. It has 1,000 leaves, 6 smaller boulders and 6 larger boulders. It is a collection of special events and remembrances.

Leaves or boulders may be given in honor of any special occasion such as: Births, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Graduations, any occasion worthy of the title Simcha.

Those persons honored by a leaf will be acknowledged in The Message and receive a special certificate. Each leaf is $600, small boulders are $1,800 and large boulders are $2,400.
