director’s welcome

On behalf of the Wildflower Festival Board of Directors, welcome to the 34th annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival! Winter has covered our valley with an abundance of snow – and we’re hoping that will help the wildflowers put on a spectacular display for you this summer!

Michelle Bivens We’ll kick off our Festival with an Opening Reception executive director from 3-7pm on Friday, July 10th. You’re invited to come in and meet Festival staff and event leaders, peruse our Blossom Boutique, and learn more about the Crested Butte area and our event offerings.

Our 10-day Wildflower Festival will run from July 1019 with 185 wildflower-themed events to choose from.

You can take your pick – hikes & walks, photography workshops, birding and butterflies, art classes, culinary & medicinal events, and the always popular Wildflower Jasmine Whelan Highlights/SUV tours. assistant director We’re bringing you some new and exciting offerings this summer. Join botanists Jennifer Ackerfield and Luke Tembrock and explore the Carnivorous Plants of Colorado. Grab your iPhone and join award winning artist and photographer, Kate Roberts, in a half day photography workshop, using your iPhone to capture and edit amazing wildflower photos and iconic Crested Butte images. We’re also partnering with Bucket List Photography Workshops and professional photographers James Harris and David Snyder, bringing you our first 3-day intensive photography retreat. Learn the fine points of capturing wildflower close-up and landscape images, then utilize editing software to turn them into masterpieces. We’re also bringing back old favorites, like Meandering in the Columbines. On this van tour you’ll explore several choice wildflower locations with our long-time guide Ken Collins; minimal hiking/walking required.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 14th – our third annual Member Appreciation Party. Mingle with the Wildflower Festival staff, leaders, and Board of Directors. Meet this year’s poster artist, Lauren Christensen, and enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers. We’ll enjoy a special appearance by our “wildflower whisperer” who will mingle with guests and share stories and folklore about our wildflowers. It’s a party you won’t want to miss, and it’s free of charge for our Festival members. Learn more about the benefits of membership and how you can support the Wildflower Festival on pages 14-15.

Finally, please join me in welcoming our new Assistant Director, Jasmine Whelan, to the Wildflower Festival. She’s a South Carolina native, and comes to the Festival after working as an International Relations Analyst at the Department of Labor in Washington, DC, where she focused on human trafficking, child labor, and forced labor in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Like many of us she was lured to Crested Butte by our unique community and the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding areas. Please make sure to say hello!

WHERE DO WE MEET FOR REGISTRATION AND CLASSES? Most Festival events will meet at the Historic Train Depot – 716 Elk Avenue.

This is our Festival Headquarters! However, some events meet off-site. Please review the meeting location the day before your event. This can be found in the description (in this guide) and in your email confirmation.

HOW EARLY DO I NEED TO ARRIVE? WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M LATE? Please be at your event meeting location 15 minutes before your program starts.

This gives you time to check in and your leader a chance to make sure everyone in the group is well-prepared. If you arrive late (even 15 minutes), we cannot guarantee you will be able to meet up with your group. Due to the nature of the Festival, we are unable to transfer you to another hike or issue a refund if you are late. Keep it simple: arrive early!

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME TO THE FESTIVAL? If you are participating in outdoor events, bring rain gear, warm layers, hat, gloves, hiking shoes/boots (broken-in please!), insect repellent, sunscreen, snacks, and water. If your event extends over the lunch or dinner hour, bring a snack/sack meal. Your hike description may also suggest bringing river-crossing shoes or sandals, and hiking poles. Supplies for art classes are provided, but you may want to bring a portable camp chair for field events. If your event requires any specialty equipment (i.e. photo classes), it will be listed in your event description.

ARE THERE REGISTRATION FEES? There is a 5% registration fee added to all events purchased.

IS TRANSPORTATION INCLUDED FOR EVENTS? Unless the event description specifically states that transportation is provided, you’ll meet at your class location and your leader will split the class into 2-4 carpools. You may be asked to drive and take other guests in your vehicle, and you will follow the leader to your event. If you do not have a vehicle, you should be able to ride with someone else.

SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE/INSTRUCTOR AT THE END OF MY EVENT? The Festival makes sure all of our instructors are fairly and properly compensated for their time and effort during the Festival, so tipping is not required. However, if you feel your guide or instructor went above and beyond to make your experience unforgettable, tips are greatly appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

WHICH EVENTS ARE FAMILY/CHILD FRIENDLY? Your child may accompany you on an event if they are above the stated minimum age listed for that event in the Program Guide. Please call our office if you have questions, (970) 349-2571.

CAN I BRING MY DOG ON ANY HIKES OR WALKS? Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate dogs at Festival events. Crested Butte is a very dog-friendly town, and you may walk your dog on any of the trails here on your own – but please(!) pick up after your four-legged friend and respect leash laws.

I’D LIKE TO BECOME A MEMBER. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND HOW DO I JOIN? Awesome! You can find all the info you need on pages 14-15.

HOW CAN I HELP MYSELF ACCLIMATIZE TO CRESTED BUTTE’S ELEVATION (9,000+ FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL)?

Most events take place at an altitude of 9,000-11,500 ft above sea level. Some people may experience being light-headed and/or a feeling of “being out of breath” when they first arrive in Crested Butte.This is common and there are a few things you can do to help yourself feel better faster: Plan on arriving in Crested Butte at least 24 hrs prior to your first outing to allow for acclimatization. DRINK LOTS OF WATER! And avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first day or two you are here.

MAY I CHANGE EVENTS AFTER I’VE ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR THEM? Yes.You’ll need to contact us at info@cbwildflower.com or (970) 349-2571 to do it. Here’s our policy: • If it is within 7 days of an event, you may NOT change events.

• As availability allows, and if it is 7 days or more before the start of an event, you may change events: • There is a $15 fee per person to change events.

• If the event being transferred TO is equal/lower in cost than the event being transferred FROM, the balance (less $15 fee) will not be refunded, but may be used as a credit for other events.

• If the event being transferred TO costs more than the event being transferred FROM, the $15 fee will apply and a balance will be due on the difference.

cancellations & refunds ALL CANCELLATIONS MUST BE MADE BY MIDNIGHT ON THURSDAY, JUNE 25TH.

Cancellations made by June 25th will be eligible for a refund, less a $15 fee, per person, per event. We cannot issue refunds for events canceled after Thursday, June 25th for any reason.

PLEASE NOTE: Rain is typical during the summer months in Crested Butte and will NOT prevent events from going out. Weather delays may be considered in the event of extreme weather but are not guaranteed. Refunds will NOT be issued due to weather. We reserve the right to modify any event, including substituting the event location or instructor, if warranted. Refunds will NOT be issued due to event modification.

INSURE YOUR TRIP: Travel and Trip Cancellation Insurance is an inexpensive way to protect your investment in the event of illness/ injury/ family emergency.

2020 wildflower poster artist

The cover of our 2020 Program Guide features our 2020 Wildflower Festival Poster by artist Lauren Christensen.We have been captivated by the riot of color and the exquisite detail in this year’s poster since the moment we saw it. We’re excited for you to fall in love with the 2020 poster and even more excited to introduce you to Lauren at this year’s festival!

For LA-based artist Lauren Christensen, Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley hold treasured childhood memories. Lauren’s family traveled to Colorado often for vacations – first for winter skiing trips, and later to take in the glorious Crested Butte summers while hiking and camping.

Lauren’s art for the 2020 poster design was directly inspired by one of her early trips to the Gunnison Valley. “I based the background of the poster on an old photo my mom took while we were in Gunnison National Park on the Lost Lake hike,” Lauren reveals. “I then superimposed wildflowers into the foreground that weren’t in the original picture, but that I love and know to be native to the Crested Butte area.”

Perhaps thanks in part to her childhood sojourns to the mountains of Colorado, Lauren finds herself most inspired to create by the colors, shapes, and patterns that she observes in nature. “Some of my works are more realistic landscapes, like the painting featured on the poster, and then some are a little more abstract,” Lauren elaborates.“My interest in exploring different colors and patterns through my art is something that correlated well with the aesthetic of the Wildflower Festival poster.There are so many different colors and shapes in the various types of flowers found in this area. And I love the contrast in patterns you find in the poster between the different flowers and the backdrop of mountains and trees.”

art to grace the 2020 Wildflower Festival Poster. Both of her parents are longtime members of the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. “My mom is actually the one that alerted me to the poster contest,” Lauren laughs.

Because of her family ties to the Wildflower Festival, Lauren understands the significance of having her art selected as part of the Wildflower Festival’s decadeslong tradition. “Nature is my main focus in terms of subject matter and my main source of inspiration. I know people who attend the Wildflower Festival are also passionate about that, and it means a lot to me that they will be seeing my art at the festival and taking it home with them.”

The poster contest was also meaningful to Lauren as a source of motivation to carve out time for her art while working full-time as a nurse practitioner in emergency medicine. “When you approach art as a hobby, pieces are left unfinished, or there’s not a lot of motivation to pursue a specific subject,” Lauren explains. “The poster contest really pushed me to finish something that I was proud of.”

Lauren concedes that the 50-60 hours a week she spends in her life-saving work as a nurse practitioner are an added challenge to pursuing her career as an artist. But she has a few words of wisdom for others who similarly find themselves juggling artistic pursuits together with a more traditional career: “I finally realized that when you put so much time and effort into your career, you owe it to yourself to also put time and effort into your passions outside of work.”

Lauren’s future aspirations include transitioning to a full-time art career in the next 5 to 10 years – ideally working on commissions, paintings similar to her work for the 2020 Wildflower Festival Poster, and smaller-scale illustrations. Her most recent project culminated in the completion of a coloring book full of art interwoven with her favorite themes of nature, mysticism, and dreams.

Orchids in the High Country

Most of us think of orchids as the exotic big blooms we see at the florist or in a botanic garden, but there are orchids all over the mountains if you know what to look for.

Orchids are one of the largest families, with over 25,000 species worldwide. Although most are tropical, there are 26 varied species in Colorado.

You’ve probably walked by some without even realizing it!

The largest local gem is called the Calypso Orchid. It blooms in June along places like Cement Creek, and later in the season at higher elevations.

It stands about 4 inches tall with a reddish stem and magenta petals that float over a wide white lower lip.This is the easiest of the locals to identify as an orchid since it looks so much like the florist variety.

Other orchids are much more subtle because their flowers are small.

of valleys all around Crested Butte. Their name comes from the root structure, which forms a mass of tangled roots among the tree roots.

When hiking, stop in a shady area and scan under the trees for a red stalk up to a foot tall. The flowers are only ½ inch or so, but are perfect little orchid blossoms with red spots or stripes. The blooms last for a week or so, but they can be found into mid-summer.

The most common genus in the area is the Bog Orchid. These can be found wherever there’s moist ground, whether it’s along a roadside or stream or in a boggy area. These are also the most difficult to recognize because they look like thin green stalks with greenish flowers along the stem. Look closely and you’ll see the flowers have the same familiar orchid shape. Be sure to sniff the blossoms—they have a wonderful sweet scent!

Landscapes in Acrylic We’ll head to the top of Old Kebler Pass to capture one of the most picturesque scenes from above Crested Butte. Megan also gives instruction on filling in the background of the painting by making suggestions of shapes through color, value, and line.

These hikes are level, with some rolling terrain, and utilize wider, well-packed trails and jeep roads. Keep in mind that the altitude here in Crested Butte can often make these hikes feel more challenging than their counterparts at sea level. INTERMEDIATE HIKES Intermediate hikes are suitable for people who consider themselves fit and who participate in jogging/walking/hiking activities on a regular basis. You should be able to comfortably travel at a pace of 2-3 miles/hour. Plan on traveling 3-6 miles on narrower, packed and rocky trails with some uneven footing. These events traverse steeper terrain, with 500-1000 feet of elevation gain/loss (steep!). Wear sturdy hiking shoes/boots (NOT tennis shoes),

and bring sunscreen and bug spray. Bring at least 32 ounces of water and a snack (or lunch if event is around noon). Rain jacket required.

EXPERT HIKES Expert hikes are suitable for people who are very physically fit, and who incorporate running, cycling, or other strenuous exercise into their schedule on a regular basis. You should be comfortable traveling at a pace of 3 miles/hour… uphill! Plan on traveling 5-8 miles (or more) on steep, often rocky terrain, and expect some off-trail hiking across talus slopes. Footing can be tricky and many of these hikes contain creek/river crossings and include traveling across areas that are narrow and exposed to cliffs/drop-offs. Elevation gain/loss can exceed 1500 vertical feet (very steep!). These hikes are not suitable for anyone with medical issues that prevent them from exerting themselves or who have a history of altitude sickness when traveling to mountain areas. Sturdy hiking

“Don’t Pick the Daisies!”

You may hear your hike leader ask you not to pick the flowers but do you know why? It’s not just for aesthetics, although we like to watch wildflowers go through their whole cycle.

We have a really short growing season here at 9000’, so all the growth and seed production is squeezed into a compact 3 month growing season.

Lots of our plants have developed ways to maximize that brief summer, but they still need a little help.

Only a few of the seeds that all those wildflowers produce actually become new plants. Some don’t land in a good spot, some are digested by birds, and some may sprout, but just plain don’t make it.

Picking flowers or even trampling flowers if you go off-trail assures that

those seeds will never have a chance to germinate. Not to mention that wildflowers are generally very short-lived once they’re cut.

True story—In the early 1900’s Coloradoans loved to take the train into the mountains for a getaway. One of the favorite hobbies was picking wildflowers to bring back home. The favorite target was the state flower, Colorado Columbine. Collectors would bring armloads of flowers home with them—so many that it actually endangered the species. It’s now illegal to pick a Colorado Columbine for that reason!

We have one really good substitute for picking wildflowers—PIC them.

Take a few good shots of your favorites, then when you’re home in January you can look at your pics and enjoy wildflower season all over!
