Corona del Mar A coastal neighborhood within Newport Beach, Corona del Mar is widely known for its vintage village atmosphere, its stunning rocky cliffs and its colorful tide pools, attractive beaches and impressive surf. The Tongva, Juaneño/Luiseño and Gabrielino people once lived in village settlements along this shore, and the area remained a sleepy village until well into the 20th century, when houses were built along Pacific Coast Highway. More recent construction, both in the hills and along the shore, include some of Orange County’s most prestigious residential areas, which take advantage of spectacular ocean views reaching to Catalina Island and beyond. George Hart is credited with being the town’s first developer. He purchased much of the area from James Irvine II, who noted that a fourth of it was “nothing but marshland.” Still, Hart saw the possibilities for summer vacation cottages and in 1904 ads proclaimed that 30-foot-wide lots could be had for $100 and up. Although access was limited (Pacific Coast Highway didn’t open until 1926), visitors came for the summer and stayed. Though no one seems quite certain how it came about—there are many theories—Corona del Mar’s streets got their flower names sometime between 1915 and 1929. Internationally known surfers drew attention to the area when they came
