Soon the pier (one of five in Santa Monica) was built, movie companies captured the scenery and Douglas Aircraft set up shop in a former film studio. The stretch of shore north of the pier came to be known as the Gold Coast, with its wealth of newly-built private clubs and celebrity homes. By 1930, the population had reached 32,000 and the city was graced with handsome hotels, department stores and impressive commercial buildings.

acienda de la Paz stands as a testament to homeowner John Z. Blazevich, who dedicated 17 years to achieving harmony between
