ETHOS ON THEMATIC CONTENT The depiction of sinful acts in storytelling is not an endorsement of sin. The Bible contains acts of violence, murder, indiscretions, and a host of other examples of the sinful nature of humanity in a fallen world. But the Bible does not explore those topics and leave one bereft of hope. Much like one cannot paint a picture without the use of shadow, one cannot tell a truthful story about human experience without depicting certain realities of human existence. We need a savior precisely because we are sinful creatures. To sanitize that truth would be a disservice to the beauty of the sacrificial love that Christ exhibited on the cross when He died for our sins. For this reason, we do not shy away from thematically challenging content, but through intentional prayerful discernment and reading of the word of God we do establish guidelines for the telling of stories of redemption. In that spirit, we offer content guides so families and individuals can make informed decisions about their viewing experience and biblical context so viewers can be drawn to understand the content considering God’s eternal character, humanity’s mortal condition, and how they interact in God’s cosmic story.
CONTENT GUIDE This production is rated A for All Audiences. Depicts loss and moments of peril.
RUN TIME The production is approximately 2 ½ hours. There will be one 15-minute intermission.
GREAT COMMISSION CONTEXT At its heart, James and the Giant Peach is a story about belonging, compassion, and the transformative power of community. James begins his journey as a young boy who has experienced tremendous loss and cruelty yet discovers hope and purpose through an unlikely group of companions. Each brings their own fears, insecurities, and imperfections, but together they learn that their differences need not divide them. Rather, through kindness, sacrifice, and mutual respect, they become something greater than they could ever be individually. This journey reflects our season theme, "Innocence to Responsibility," as James gradually moves from a child dependent on others' decisions to someone who recognizes his own capacity to lead, care for, and advocate for those around him. His growth reminds us that maturity is not simply about gaining independence but recognizing our responsibility to others. Rather than allowing the cruelty he has experienced to dictate how he treats those around him, James chooses compassion, demonstrating that our circumstances need not determine our character. The story also speaks directly to CBU's emphasis this year on civility, reminding us that meaningful community requires more than simply tolerating differences. It calls us to listen, extend grace, and recognize the inherent dignity of others, even when they are unlike ourselves. True civility is not the absence of disagreement, but a commitment to treating others with respect and compassion despite those disagreements. As James and his companions discover, community is strengthened not by uniformity, but by a willingness to value and care for one another. From a Christian perspective, these ideas reflect Christ's command to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Philippians 2:3-4 further challenges believers to act with humility, looking not only to their own interests but also to the interests of others. This love is not simply an attitude, but a responsibility that requires intentional action, particularly toward those who are vulnerable, overlooked, or in need of belonging. James's journey reminds us that even small acts of kindness and sacrifice can have a profound impact on the lives of others. This understanding of love and responsibility is also central to the Great Commission. Christ's call to make disciples of all nations is not simply an invitation to share what we believe, but a charge to go into the world, build relationships, and demonstrate His love through our words and actions. The Great Commission calls us beyond the comfort of familiar communities and challenges us to engage with people whose backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives may differ from our own. In doing so, we are reminded that every person bears the image of God and is worthy of dignity, compassion, and respect. Ultimately, James and the Giant Peach invites us to consider the kind of community we are called to create and the responsibility we have toward those around us. As a Christ-centered university, our goal is not simply to prepare students for personal success, but to equip them to use their gifts in service to others and in fulfillment of the Great Commission. Through its humor, imagination, and heart, this story reminds us that meaningful transformation often begins when we look beyond ourselves, extend grace to others, and choose to love as Christ has called us to love. Zachary Bortot, MFA Associate Professor of Theatre Theatre Arts Division Director
DIRECTOR’S NOTE Roald Dahl’s classic tale of James and the Giant Peach is one of wonder and curiosity, magic and adventure, heartbreak and triumph. At the beginning of our story, a young boy climbs into his attic on a rainy day ready to play make-believe. He is swept away by his imagination as it fills the attic with a wild cast of creatures, the furniture and his toys become the world of the story, and the mysterious “Ladahlord” leads the boy through his adventure. I ask that the audience let their imagination run wild just like the young boy; where a ladder can be a tree, toys can come to life, and an umbrella can be a peach! Children’s author Christopher Moore said, “children see magic because they look for it.” It is my hope that the audience can play like children for the next few hours and see magic on stage. Magic and wonder aren’t the only childlike qualities I would ask the audience to experience and embrace. The young James is quick to love, accepts first, and approaches each encounter with humility. It is these qualities that make him the hero of our story; and an artistic personification of why Jesus tells us to “become like children.” “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3-4 ESV) James gives more love than he ever receives, he stands up for those who can’t stand up for themselves, he even accepts those who constantly try to push him away. This is what Jesus asks of us. And even in a silly show with talking bugs, outrageous aunties, and a giant peach that travels the world, God’s light and purpose are at the heart of our story. And marvelous, wonderful things Can come true Ethan Park Director
