Facility Highlight We believe that nursing is a human science, and the essence of nursing is found in the relationship a nurse establishes with the patient, their family and the community. Integrating the latest science and technology, the College of Nursing combines innovative leadership and nursing theory in order to promote excellence globally. Students in the College of Nursing train in state-of-the-art facilities designed to prepare students for real-life situations. For pre-licensure students, the Clinical Simulation and Skills Labs are equipped with low fidelity and high-fidelity simulation equipment. The College of Nursing also features a special simulation room called the “Black Box Room” where nursing students experience an immersive simulation in public health, emergency and cross-cultural situations. Throughout the program, students interact with standardized patients to practice advanced nursing skills.

Faculty Spotlight Meg Matthews, MSN Program Director, ELMSN

My name is Meg Matthews, and I am an assistant professor in the College of Nursing. I have been a nurse for 30 years and will be starting my sixth year as faculty. I became interested in nursing while serving on a mission trip to Jamaica, West Indies. I had completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology and decided to do service and was sent to Jamaica. I had planned to stay for 3 months, but it turned into 18 months after working with a nurse there and falling in love with the work. I applied to nursing school from Jamaica and returned once I started my training in the states. Nursing was, is and always will be my passion. God has shown me the honor it is to walk with people through some of their happiest and darkest moments, bestowed me with the compassion and strength to endure and, for that, I praise Him every day. My career in nursing included many years of cardiothoracic care and travel nursing in all areas of cardiac care. I traveled across the U.S. and worked in over 22 hospitals before landing my dream job here at CBU. Some of the most fulfilling times of my career have been here at CBU. Working with the students to help encourage their passion for nursing while building their foundation of knowledge has been a blessing every day. My scholarly interests include instilling the importance of a strong foundation in pharmacology and developing a curriculum to build a strong foundation of practice for our transitioning students as novice nurses after graduation. Recent research has led me outside of the academic setting. I am currently developing a mentorship program at local hospitals to build confidence levels and improve retention for our new graduate nurses during the first year of practice.
