ETHOS ON THEMATIC CONTENT The depiction of sinful acts in storytelling is not an endorsement of sin. The Bible contains acts of violence, murder, indiscretions, and a host of other examples of the sinful nature of humanity in a fallen world. But the Bible does not explore those topics and leave one bereft of hope. Much like one cannot paint a picture without the use of shadow, one cannot tell a truthful story about human experience without depicting certain realities of human existence. We need a savior precisely because we are sinful creatures. To sanitize that truth would be a disservice to the beauty of the sacrificial love that Christ exhibited on the cross when He died for our sins. For this reason, we do not shy away from thematically challenging content, but through intentional prayerful discernment and reading of the word of God we do establish guidelines for the telling of stories of redemption. In that spirit, we offer content guides so families and individuals can make informed decisions about their viewing experience and biblical context so viewers can be drawn to understand the content considering God’s eternal character, humanity’s mortal condition, and how they interact in God’s cosmic story.

CONTENT GUIDE This production is rated T for Teenagers and older. Contains mature themes of love and loss.

RUN TIME The production is approximately 1 ½ hours. There will be no intermission.

GREAT COMMISSION CONTEXT At first glance, Clue may seem like an unlikely place to consider the Great Commission. It is, after all, a murder mystery filled with deception, blackmail, accusation, and wonderfully absurd comedy. Yet beneath that comedy is a world in which nearly every character is hiding something. Fear of exposure causes people to conceal the truth, distrust one another, and protect themselves at the expense of others. That tension connects meaningfully with our Theatre Arts season theme, “From Innocence to Responsibility.” Maturity requires us to move beyond simply identifying what is wrong with the world around us and toward taking responsibility for our own choices, assumptions, and actions. The characters of Clue are very good at pointing fingers. They are considerably less comfortable examining what they themselves have contributed to the increasingly tangled situation around them. Scripture calls Christians toward a different way of engaging with one another: to walk in truth, to bring what is hidden into the light, and to extend grace rather than rush toward condemnation. Jesus describes Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), reminding us that truth for the Christian is not merely about being correct, but is inseparable from the person and character of Christ. This also connects with CBU’s emphasis this year on the theme of civility. Civility does not require us to ignore disagreement, wrongdoing, or difficult truths. Rather, it asks us to consider how we engage one another when those difficulties arise. In a culture where suspicion can quickly become accusation and disagreement can become division, Christian maturity calls us to listen carefully, speak truthfully, seek understanding, and treat others with dignity. The Great Commission sends us into that complicated world as representatives of Christ. We are called not merely to proclaim truth, but to embody the character of the One whose truth we proclaim. That requires courage and conviction, but also humility, grace, and love. Clue explores these ideas through comedy and exaggeration. Its characters become increasingly tangled in secrecy, assumption, and accusation until the truth finally cuts through the confusion. Amid all the murder, mystery, and laughter, perhaps there is a simple reminder for us as well: maturity is not merely knowing the truth - it is taking responsibility for how we live, speak, and treat one another in light of it. Zachary Bortot, MFA Associate Professor of Theatre Theatre Arts Division Director

DIRECTOR’S NOTE There is something wonderfully familiar about Clue. Many of us know the characters, the rooms, the weapons, and the basic question at the center of it all: who did it, where, and with what? But what drew me to this play was the opportunity to take something so familiar and discover what happens when it becomes fully alive. But what does that mean? Many of us have fond memories of the game, the movie, and other stage productions. My goal is to honor the images of those memories, while still putting our own creative mark on the production. Our production began with the image of the Gordian Knot - an impossibly tangled knot from ancient legend that could not be untied by conventional means. According to the story, Alexander the Great famously solved the problem not by untangling it, but by cutting through it. That image became a useful way for us to think about the world of Clue. Nearly everyone who enters Boddy Manor is not exactly what they appear to be. Each character is carrying their share of secrets. Those secrets lead to suspicion, suspicion leads to accusation, and before long, everyone is caught in an increasingly complicated knot of deception and mistrust. The only thing capable of cutting through it is the truth. Of course, Clue is also tremendously silly. That balance has been one of the great joys of directing this production. Beneath the murder, blackmail, and suspicion is a comedy that moves at an almost relentless pace. Our actors have had to learn that creating such chaos requires tremendous precision. Our designers and technicians have faced a similar challenge: somehow bringing the iconic rooms of Boddy Manor to life while allowing us to race from one location to another almost instantaneously. What appears spontaneous onstage is the result of an extraordinary amount of collaboration, discipline, and trust. And perhaps that is one of the reasons theatre is such a fitting way to bring Clue to life. A board game asks us to gather around a table, imagine a mystery together, and try to make sense of the clues in front of us. Theatre asks us to do something remarkably similar. So today, we hope you enjoy the mystery! Examine the suspects. Look for clues. Laugh at the absurdity of it all. And when the knot becomes hopelessly tangled, remember that eventually the truth has a way of cutting through. Enjoy the show! Zachary Bortot, MFA Director & Producer Theatre Arts Division Director
