This recital is presented under the direction of Professor Fred Carama in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the B.M. in Vocal Performance.
ARTIST
Jerden Patillo's excitement cannot be contained over what may be one of his final solo performances before beginning the next stage of his journey as a music educator. As a Music Education major at California Baptist University, Jerden will face the rigorous challenges of edTPA and Student Teaching in the Fall semester before graduating with a Bachelor's and Teaching Credentials. Jerden has made music a part of his life, starting with experimenting and plucking notes on Grandma's upright piano from 1909 as a young kid, learning famous works such as Jingle Bells and Sleigh Ride from a Christmas book within the piano bench. However, it was not until exploring choir and theatre in high school that a serious passion for choral singing and music education was sparked. Jerden has been a member of CBU's Camerata for all four years he has been at CBU, becoming the bass section leader in his third year. These experiences, culminating in a final tour through Italy during spring break, demonstrated a growth in his musicianship and leadership, preparing him to impact the world through a career in the performing arts.
COLLABORATIVE ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Fred Carama is widely known as one of the most respected voice teachers in the United States. His students perform on the world’s leading opera and concert stages in repertoire ranging from baroque to bel canto, and from Wagner to contemporary musical theater. With an extensive background in physiology and anatomy, Professor Carama combines the aesthetics of great singing with a profound understanding of the fundamentals of vocal health.

This recital would not be possible without the full support of the relationships I have built over time, which have helped shape my life's journey. I must first thank my professors and mentors at CBU for guiding me with utmost patience throughout my time here. If it were not for their encouragement and patience, I would not have grown nearly as much as I have, not just as a singer but as a future educator as well. I am especially thankful for the opportunities I have had to perform and develop as a musician during my years in Camerata. I would love to thank my friends and peers who are part of this recital. Kevin, Chloe, and Elijah have all played such an important role in my music life, both on and off the risers. To share this final performance with them makes my experience here all the more meaningful. And these are just some of the many friends who have continuously supported me and made music-making something that is both joyful and memorable. From the early days I would spend at my grandparents' house on their piano to now pursuing a degree in music education, it was my family's belief in me that made all the difference. This recital will be dedicated to my family, blood and chosen. It is also dedicated to my better half, Geki, whose love and presence in my life have illuminated every step of the way. I am so grateful for the many people who have supported my journey and helped me reach this point.
Jerden is so grateful to share his recital with several of his close friends. Kevin, a fellow bass member of Camerata and Jerden's double-cast as Sarastro in The Magic Flute, has performed in vocal competitions and previously debuted as Simone in Gianni Schicci. Chloe, a former Camerata member, fellow music educator, and close friend, joins in this recital as Fiona in "Who I'd Be". She previously had duets with Jerden, performing "La ci darem la mano" and "Kiss Me Pt. 1" In her very own senior recital. Jerden also shares the recital hour with his best friend, Elijah, with whom he has shared a love for music since high school. Elijah is a versatile countertenor/tenor in his own right and will be singing as Donkey in "Who I'd Be".
