Redfish Lake Lodge is closed this time of year, but you can still get to the lake and spectaular views of the Sawtooths.

Cool Fall Drive O

Stanley-Sun Valley Loop

ctober and November, depending on the weather, can be the perfect time to take a weekend (or long day) drive through the Stanley Basin and over Galena Summit to the Wood River Valley. Stands of brilliantly-colored aspens jump from pine-covered slopes, and willows along the waterways glow firey red. And the air! Somehow it just doesn't get fresher than fall in the mountains.

Leaving from Boise, you have two options: Hwy 21 through Idaho City, or Hwy 55 to Banks, turning east toward Garden Valley. The distance is about the same, but the Banks-Lowman Road, or the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, isn't as curvy. From Lowman, travel north on Hwy 21 over Banner Summit and into the Stanley Basin. Around three hours into your drive, you'll arrive in picturesque Stanley, population 67.

After lunch at the Stanley Baking Company, continue on, turning south on Hwy 75. Though Redfish Lake Lodge is closed this time of year, you can drive around to the boat launch and Sockeye Campground to walk on the beach or take in the majestic view of Mt. Heyburn. Back on south 75, be sure to stop for photo ops near Obsidian and at the Galena Summit overlook.

COLDWELL BANKER TOMLINSON GROUP

PAGE 5 The original road over Galena Summit was completed in 1881 to provide access to the mines at Vienna and Sawtooth City near what is now Smiley Creek. The overlook is handicap accessible with plenty of parking. Flush toilets are also available until winter. Once down "the hill" and into the Wood River Valley, you'll see Galena Lodge on the east side of the highway. Though only open in summer and winter seasons, make it a point to check their website to plan a future visit, as there are yurts and great trails available for summer hiking and mountain biking, as well as winter cross country skiing. cbboise.com

If you're making it a two-day trip, stay in Ketchum, perhaps at the base of world famous Bald Mountain. There are myriad places to stay, and rooms shouldn't be a problem, as this time of year is considered "slack" in the valley. If you stay the night, plan on breakfast at The Kneadery on Leadville in Ketchum. Get there

early, though, because it fills up fast. On the road again, head south through Hailey and Bellevue and turn west at Hwy 20 to Fairfield. The Camas Prairie holds its own kind of beauty, as does Cat Creek Summit on to Mountain Home and the last stretch to I-84 and home.

Get Your Fireplace Ready Athena Snow, Coldwell Banker Blue Matter

B

ert, the Cockney jack-ofall-trades and chimney sweep Dick Van Dyke played in Mary Poppins, made chimney cleaning look pretty romantic, but in order to prevent problems and keep you safe, readying your fireplace for fall and winter use is serious business. Though many of us have already used our fireplaces, there are certain things, each of us should do to ensure a safe and cozy season. Here are three steps to get your home fireplace ready.

1. A good cleaning. Get out your shop-vac and remove all the cobwebs or remnants from your last fire. After cleaning out the fireplace, you’ll be able to determine if you need to tackle any mortar repair issues. There are tons of how-to articles for this type of repair, or you can bring in the professionals. 2. Shine a light on it. While you’re in the garage, grab the flashlight and take a peek up your chimney. According to Gary Spolar of Bay Village-

based Century Chimney Sweep, you’re looking for “fuzzy or shiny material” called creosote, which is flammable, so it’s important to bring in professionals to clean. 3. Protect your outdoor friends. Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your chimney? Be sure to have it checked by a professional to make sure there are no nesting squirrels or other critters. It's Halloween!

Simple Decorating Ideas

If you want to show off your festive side without making your home look like the Addams family lives there, these tips might be for you! Lindsay Litanski Coldwell Banker Blue Matter

E

ven though most stores have their Christmas decorations on shelves, many of us still want to take it a holiday at a time, honoring Fall and Halloween, by decorating with deep oranges and rich yellow-golds. Below are some easy and affordable ideas to consider.

Outside (Not So) Spooky Steps. Your steps are probably the easiest thing to decorate. If you want to go basic, you can buy a few pumpkins and you are all set. Want to take it a step further? Add a few lanterns for an elegant effect. Party Porch. Porches were made for Halloween decorations. Well, maybe that's exaggerating a bit, but they are the perfect spot for seasonal decor. Focus on one corner of your porch and pick one large item as your focal point. Some ideas to get you started: a cauldron, broomstick, pumpkin topiary or a hay bale. COLDWELL BANKER TOMLINSON GROUP

PAGE 7 Ghastly Garden. Mums are a fall classic that are an elegant addition for your curb appeal. In addition to planting mums you can find other garden decorations like flags and signs on sites like Etsy and Amazon. Dressed Up Door. A simple wreath will tie the look together. Make your own with ribbon, burlap, and silk flowers, or buy one from Michael's or Etsy. Check out DIY fall wreaths HERE for some great ideas.

Inside Eerie Entry Table. Creating a frightening foyer is as easy as picking a theme. You can go with colors, like orange, black and/or purple, creatures like bats, skeletons or witches or just an overall Autumnal theme. This is the first, and sometimes only, thing guests will see when they enter so you can show off your Halloween spirit without even touching any other room in the house. cbboise.com

Frightening Fireplace Mantel. If you have a fireplace then you have prime real estate in your home for a Halloween display. Candles, mini pumpkins and

simple garland are affordable touches that go a long way. Looking for more Halloween fun? Click HERE.

Use fung shui to help guide you to the area of your home that you set up as your yoga and meditation spot.

Just Breathe

Create a Perfect Yoga Space

Your own personal zen spot at home can be the perfect remedy to releasing the day’s pressures. Athena Snow Coldwell Banker Blue Matter

S

ometimes it can be difficult to get to the yoga studio during the work week, so creating your own personal zen spot at home can be the perfect remedy to releasing the day’s pressures while also having another reason to love home. Here are 9 things to keep in mind when creating your yoga and meditation space at home. 1. Choosing the location. Use fung shui to help guide you to the area of your home that you set up as your yoga and meditation spot. The front left corner of your home is called the knowledge and wisdom bagua (area), which can be the perfect location for your personal zen corner. 2. Flooring. If you already have hardwood floors, you don’t need to incorporate a different surface into your space. However, if you have carpet you’ll need to consider bringing in a board to place under your mat. cbboise.com

3. Mirror mirror on the wall. There’s no need to bring mirrors into your yoga space. If you already have them in this room, consider relocating them to another spot in your home. Why bring potential judgment of your practice (and yourself ) into the space that you’re setting up for well-being? 4. Alter of thanks. Why not find a small piece of furniture to place in your yoga and meditation spot that you can place items that remind you of gratitude? Consider filling it with intentions of the commitment you are making to yourself. 5. Flora friends. Maybe you already have some house plants that might want to join you in your new zen spot, or perhaps the next time you’re in the garden center you might want to pick up a few new friends to green up your new yoga and meditation space. Either way, bringing in plant life helps improve the indoor air quality.

6. Soothing sounds. Don’t forget to find a spot for a speaker so that you can bring in those zenful sounds of nature. 7. Lighting. If your yoga spot is located in an area of the home that doesn’t get much natural light, think about adding a dimmer so you can adjust the lighting during your practice. 8. No pet zone. Some of us have learned the hard way during meditation at home that our furry family members don’t understand why you are sitting on the floor. There's nothing quite like a lick on the nose when you least expect it! 9. Clearing the room. Now that you have your new home yoga and meditation space set up, be sure to clear it energetically by burning some sage in the room. Looking for some visual inspiration? Monthly Market Stats

What’s Happening in Treasure Valley Real Estate

H

eading into the fourth quarter of the year, both Ada and Canyon County are seeing the typical seasonal leveling off of inventory of available homes for sale. The inventory will likely continue to drop as we approach the holiday season. Additionally, sales activity in Ada County has dropped slightly while Canyon County continues to see promising sales numbers. Both counties showed median sales prices declining for the month, indicating the normal fall season softening in prices and fewer upper-end home sales.

We still expect to finish the year stronger than the last half of 2013. Market statistics and anecdotal reports from real estate professionals in the Treasure Valley are both telling that overall activity in the market is stronger this year than it was at the same time last year. Affordable interest rates and low (under 5.0%) unemployment continue to affect home affordability in a positive way. While there are fewer buyers out looking for homes during the last quarter of the year, keep in mind, as we stated above, that there are

fewer homes on the market during this time of year. In fact, oftentimes the buyer demand outpaces the supply of homes on the market heading into the holidays. This means that now may be a better time than you might think to sell your home. Just like the weather, real estate is most definitely local. Call or email to find out what all of this means for you in your own neighborhood and market.
