Stanley-Sun Valley Loop
ven though temperatures in the mountains have been warm, now is still a great time to take a weekend (or long day) drive through the Stanley Basin and over Galena Summit to the Wood River Valley. Stands of brilliantly-colored aspens jump from pine-covered slopes, and willows along the waterways glow fiery red. And the air! Somehow it just doesn't get fresher than fall in the mountains.
Leaving from Boise, you have two options: Hwy. 21 through Idaho City, or Hwy. 55 to Banks, turning east toward Garden Valley. The distance is about the same, but the Banks-Lowman Road, or the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, isn't as curvy. From Lowman, travel north on Hwy. 21 over Banner Summit and into the Stanley Basin. Around three hours into your drive, you'll arrive in picturesque Stanley, population 69.

After lunch at the Stanley Baking Company, continue on, turning south on Hwy. 75. Redfish Lake Lodge is about seven miles south of Stanley and two miles west of the highway. It is open through the first weekend in October. The view alone is well worth the side trip. Back on south 75, be sure to stop for photo ops near Obsidian and at the Galena Summit overlook.
PAGE 5 The original road over Galena Summit was completed in 1881 to provide access to the mines at Vienna and Sawtooth City near what is now Smiley Creek. The overlook is handicap accessible with plenty of parking. Flush toilets are also available until winter. Once down "the hill" and into the Wood River Valley, you'll see Galena Lodge on the east side of the highway. Open for both the summer and winter seasons, the lodge is a hub for bikers, hikers, Nordic skiers, and snowshoers. Yurts are available for rent, and the lodge offers a full calendar of kids' camps, wagon rides, barbecues, and more.
If you're making it a two-day trip, stay in Ketchum, perhaps at the base of world famous Bald Mountain. There are myriad places to stay, and rooms shouldn't be a problem, as this time of year is considered the beginning of "slack" in the valley. If you stay the night, plan on breakfast at The Kneadery on
Leadville in Ketchum. Get there early, though, because it fills up fast. On the road again, head south through Hailey and Bellevue and turn west at Hwy 20 to Fairfield. The Camas Prairie holds its own kind of beauty, as does Cat Creek Summit on to Mountain Home and the last stretch to I-84 and home. cbboise.com

Silver City, Idaho Located about 70 miles southwest of Boise in the Owyhee Mountains, Silver City is a great destination for explorers and Idaho history buffs.

n 1863, gold and silver were discovered in Southern Idaho's Owyhee Mountains, and it didn't take long for throngs of miners with big dreams of finding their fortunes to flock to what, in 1864, would become Silver City.

ate summer is a great time to explore Idaho’s rivers, and despite the smoke blowing into our area from NW wildfires, rafters are enjoying great weather and exciting water along both the South and North Forks of the Payette River. Bear Valley Rafting Company's experienced staff are ready to take you and your group on a fantastic adventure, be it half or full day. Headquartered just 45 minutes from Boise, Bear Valley Rafting is located in Banks, Idaho, at the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Payette River. and Phil White, Bear Valley has been in business since 1987. Each trip is led by experienced guides who love to share their passion for the river with beginners and whitewater veterans alike. Some trips can even accommodate children as young as four! All trips include the requisite life jackets, helmets (dependent on stretch of river run), and paddles. Optional gear such as wetsuits are offered, as well, and are free of charge. Because everyone paddles, rafters get much more than a mere “ride-along” experience. Along with the excitement of the white water, there are spots along both rivers that allow for a cool swim. Special programs and exhibits, as well as living history dramas and other performances, will further enhance your experience. Wagon encampments with costumed pioneer “re-enactors” will make your visit come alive. Be sure to check the website when planning your trip so you schedule enough time to fully immerse yourself in the adventure. Plan to take time for a hike along the four miles of trails, including to the top of Flagstaff Hill where you’ll be able to see 13 miles of the original Oregon Trail. Most trails in the system range from easy to moderate and are designed for barrier-free access with grades of
5% or less. A 0.8-mile section of unpaved trail is deemed “hard” and is steeper than the rest (and certainly optional). Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and take along plenty of water. Current hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, but change seasonally, so check the website before going. You may also call 541-523-1843 for more information on planning your visit. If you’d like to make a weekend of it, Baker City is a wonderful place to visit. In 1978, Baker City’s downtown area was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest
commercial historic district in the State of Oregon. In addition to shops and restaurants, Baker City has a wonderful park, perfect for a rest and a picnic. Consider booking a room in the Geiser Grand Hotel, famous, in part, for its ghost hunting events. The hotel, first opened in 1889, features a stained-glass ceiling and was known as the “Queen of the Mines” during the gold rush years. Ada County Resale Home Inventory Inched Up in July

uly 2018 marked four consecutive months of gains in existing/resale inventory in Ada County when measured month-to-month. More inventory is the key to bringing balance back to the residential real estate market, and while this recent uptick was not enough to stop the nearly four-year trend of yearover-year decreases, we’ll certainly take it.
The additional inventory – and the annual shift in buyer demand (as we move from the spring/ early summer market into the late summer/fall market) held prices for existing/resale homes nearly even with June 2018, while new construction prices dipped 3.5%.
