FROM THE DIRECTOR |
Building With Lasting Materials “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” - 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) As we build together, we want to build with materials that last. We want to have foundations that won’t be shaken by life’s’ uncertainty. All that we do needs to be tested and filtered through the litmus paper of these three – faith, hope and love. However, it isn’t always as easy as just saying it. Walking out faith, hope and love in our day to day lives is the tough bit. What does it look like to build like this? To be honest, it can be so different for each of us. The key to doing it is the shift from passive to active; from having it to engaging it. We can have faith, but as we activate our faith and put it into action, that’s when things change. Having hope for your future is an amazing part of knowing Jesus, but we have a living hope. When we become the hope in the lives of the lost, situations and perspective shifts. We receive the unconditional love of God and live in its effects, but when we move from being only recipients and into being carriers of that love to our world, communities change. Let me encourage you to keep putting faith, hope and love in action in 2020. By partnering with CBN you are providing hope to thousands of people through our prayer line every month. You enable us to produce faith-lifting programmes and online content that touch many lives each day. Together through Operation Blessing, we share God’s love to a hurting world through humanitarian relief projects all around the world. Thank you for your partnership with CBN in 2020. It is my prayer that as we unite in partnership, we will bring glory to God so that the world will know His love.

THE UNWAVERING FAITHFULNESS OF GOD STANDING IN FAITH ON HIS PROMISES
TEACHING | Gordon Robertson Chief Executive Officer
Recently during my morning devotions, I was reminded of just how faithful God is. If you’re facing some kind of challenge, here are three scriptures to encourage you. First, 1 Thessalonians 5:24 says “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” Rest assured that you are called. And because God has called you, He can be trusted to accomplish His word. If something seems impossible, that’s the time to praise God! That’s the time to pray in faith, and that’s the time He will move. The second verse is Hebrews 10:23, which tells us, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” When dad first founded CBN, we had to ‘pray in’ every camera, every light, and every payroll. Similarly, during the early days of CBN Asia in Manila, we had to pray for a studio. We had to pray to meet the bills every week. And we prayed in the vision that CBN Asia would spread the Gospel throughout Asia. I look back and marvel at all God has done. And I wonder ‘why would I ever doubt? Of course, God can do that.’ Yet it was a lesson to apply today and every day. We need to hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering. Why?
Because He who promised is faithful. The third verse is Matthew 24:14, which people often memorise. It is the dedication scripture for CBN’s studio headquarters building and the foundation of everything we do. Jesus says, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
God can do that. Some translations say the gospel shall be preached – yet whether it’s will or shall, this is a promise from God. The gospel will be preached. He who has promised is faithful, and He will be faithful to complete it. And so, we praise God for His great faithfulness and mercy. His word assures us, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). We thank God for allowing us to be part of His plan. We boldly pray that He will use us to preach His glorious gospel to every tribe, tongue and nation. And we stand in faith on His marvellous promises. God bless you. Scripture from NKJV.

These Three Remain Laura Dijkens Digital Media Assistant
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” - 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) Love is the very foundation that you and I were built on. It was for love that Jesus did what no other could do – die for us on the cross, so we could be alive in Him. Jesus was the ultimate example of true, deep and unconditional love. He loved the sinners; He loved the broken; He even loved the people who nailed Him to the cross. Jesus loved with a love that goes beyond our understanding. Not only can we read about the true love of God in the Bible, but we can experience it and have access to it all the time. He wants you to encounter His love daily. I remember a time when the circumstances around me made me feel numb and spiritually drained. I felt like I was slipping away from God. It took me a while to just sit down and talk to God. But I did, I sat down with God and started talking to Him – telling Him about my hurt and apologising for not coming to Him sooner.
06
But before I could carry on, I felt my spirit fill with peace. I felt the most loving embrace surround me that I knew could only be God. He cared about what I had to say but was happier that I just came back to Him. And He knew that what I needed most in that moment was a hug from my heavenly Father. He just loves us so much.
He loved the broken When the prodigal son returned home, the first thing his father did was love him and celebrate him. What I experienced revealed a whole new facet to the love of God. It has built my faith and given me hope. I know that whatever happens around me in this world, I am never abandoned. I know I am loved even when my circumstance makes me feel otherwise. Let me encourage you; don’t stop seeking God. Even when the waves come crashing, cling to Him because He’s got you. He holds you tight and He loves you passionately.
With your generosity, CBN brings hope and relief to those in need, as an expression of God’s unfailing love. Join the mission & become a partner at cbneurope.com/partners

Faith Through The Darkness Phil Parkinson IT Coordinator
We all have a measure of faith. Maybe you believe in Jesus; maybe you are a sceptic or maybe you’re not sure what you believe in. Wherever you are, we all have the desire to trust in something, the question is, in what? As a Christian, I can say undoubtedly say that I have an unswerving faith in Jesus Christ. My head and heart both know that God is the Author and Perfecter of my faith. But it can be so easy to put my faith in other things - my job, my savings, the safety and security of my house and even my family. Even when things are going well, I can still be distracted from God and His plans for my life, so it is unsurprising that we can lose sight of God in the tough times too. There is an amazing phrase I’ve heard recently, it says; “We praise Jesus on the mountain top, but we know Him in the valley.” This is also a phrase that has been true for my wife and I for the last few years of our lives.
08
I met my wife over a doughnut at our church in Manchester back in 2008.
We immediately started to connect and within a few short weeks we were dating. After a crazy short time of dating I proposed to her and, amazingly, she said yes! The following year, we were married and starting to figure out this unusual new world called ‘married life’. We had our fair share of disagreements and learning how to live with each other, as any couple do, but we were largely on the same page with our expectations. We hadn’t talked much about children at first, other than the typical, “when we have kids, we’ll do x, y and z” conversations. But as we approached the two-year mark, we started to think about when we would begin the process of starting a family (assuming we were grown up enough to be responsible for other little people). At the same time, we were in the process of moving cities to be around my wife’s family and church. So, without too much fear or apprehension, we ‘started trying’. We weren’t nervous about any difficulties in conceiving. Why would we be? We were both from fairly large families, and most of our siblings
FEATURED | (mine in particular) had many children without seemingly any problems at all. A few months into the process, and with some good old prayer support, we found out we were pregnant. What joy! Now the nerves of impending parenthood began. What school should we send them to? How big a car should we get? When should we start saving for university? All within the first couple of weeks. We had no issues with the pregnancy – in fact not much to report at all. No cravings or aversions, and we were just counting the days until that glorious scan happened. But just 36 hours before the scan, Beth woke up in the night in tremendous pain. After speaking to the health advice line, we went straight into hospital to see what the problem was. Even in this moment, we were full of faith, knowing our God was in control and would protect both us and our baby.
Did He even care? After some tests, and some peculiar responses by the medical staff, it was revealed to us that our little bean had stopped growing at 6 weeks, and Beth was in fact going through the process of ‘passing’ this little embryo through her system. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘the bottom fell out of our world.’ Well, it did. We didn’t know what to do. Our excitement and joyful anticipation
turned to deep despair and mourning. How could this happen? Had we done something wrong? Had God changed His mind? Was He trying to teach us a lesson? We knew that none of those questions were true, but in the moment, your brain goes into overdrive and tries to rationalise everything, searching for the possible answers. We slowly got back on our feet, and in the months that followed, our faith grew stronger, knowing that this wasn’t the end of the story. Whatever God’s intentions, He was on His throne, and we were to serve Him with all our passion. We continued to serve in our church over the coming months and found out that we were pregnant again. Straight away, we started praying for this baby; having faith that God wouldn’t let anything happen again. But it did. We went through the pain of losing another child. At this point, while I can say that our faith in God was still pretty solid, I started to question whether He actually wanted us to have children at all. Did He even care about this specific area of my life? It began to put pressure on our marriage. We went through a season of miscommunication, resentment and depression, although from the outside you probably wouldn’t have noticed too much. With the help of some great friends and leaders in our church, we got ourselves
09
| FEATURED back on track and started focusing on our future. But what did that look like? Try as I might, I was struggling to see children in it.
like never before and after each visit to the hospital for monitoring, our excitement grew. Could this be the one that stuck?
We had an opportunity to churchplant in Mombasa, Kenya. This was a fantastic year of our lives, developing our leadership, character and our marriage. Our pastors there challenged us to start investigating our fertility, as we hadn’t gotten pregnant since our second miscarriage, which was now 3 years previous. We were nervous at first, not wanting to hear more bad news, but we took some steps to investigate what was going on.
The answer was ‘yes’. We had our little girl last summer, and she is a continual source of joy and wonder.
We spoke to a great specialist, who immediately ruled out several things that were at the back of our minds. I remember saying to God that I trusted Him, that I knew that it was ultimately His prerogative as to the outcome, but it was almost like I’d given up.
God won’t let go of you We headed back to the UK once more, excited in some ways about another fresh start, but also feeling a bit empty as we still didn’t know what was happening. After a year of getting back on our feet with jobs, a home and a rhythm of life, we found out we were pregnant again. This was incredible, but it was a fight to have joy in this situation, praying that this time we would go full term.
10
People around us prayed
I suppose it’s easy to be on this side of the story and say that we always knew God would come through for us. But it’s never that simple. I wonder if we would have the strength of character and the level of faith we have now, without those testing times. We may never understand why those miscarriages happened, but I trust in His bigger plan. Maybe you have been in similar testing times. Maybe your faith has been battered and shaken, like a tiny dinghy in middle of a fierce ocean. All I can say is, hold on. Take each day at a time. Keep yourself close to God. Get around other believers who will cheer you on. Hold fast to the promises of His Word. Write down that promise that you’re believing for and pray over it daily. At our daughter’s dedication, we shared this verse; ‘Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life’ - Psalm 23:6a (MSG). This is a constant reminder that His love is an active love; He is chasing after us. God won’t let go of you. Hold fast to the promises of God. Have faith.
TESTIMONIES |
There is such power in testimony, and it is always an honour to discover what God is doing in peoples’ lives through the work of our prayer centre. With every story of faith, we celebrate God at work and are so encouraged. We hope you will be too. HEALTH
A caller rang in for prayer for their unborn child. The Mother had undergone IVF treatment and been told to prepare for miscarriage. We have since learned that Jesus has stepped in and all is well with Mother and baby. Praise God!
PROVISION One of our callers rang in to pray for her son who had recently done some roofing work. The boss refused to pay them their wages. We prayed and the caller rang back in to give a testimony that after praying, the boss had a change of heart and paid the wages to her son.
HEALING One of our callers rang in recently for prayer as her brother was suffering with mental health problems. We have since learned that her brother has been completely healed! God is faithful!
SALVATION We recently had a first-time caller ring into the ministry. She is homeless and staying in a hotel, receiving medication for various issues. As she was flicking through the TV channels, she saw a woman on The 700 Club sharing about being on the same medication with similar issues but is now free because of Jesus. Our caller couldn’t believe it and has just received Christ! Thank you, Lord!

Hope In The Grieving Sarah Fletcher Prayer Centre Coordinator
A Living Hope in the midst of Grief & Loss Why God? Where were you? Why didn’t you come? Ever screamed such words at God? I know I have! I yelled at God when Debbie drew her last breath. Debbie was my big sister, but she lost her fight with life at the age of 34. I was just 23 at the time with too many questions and not nearly enough answers! Where was God? Why didn’t he heal her and set her free? Why didn’t he rescue her? In my many questions, my perspective of God’s goodness became a little tainted. I began to believe the lie that God wasn’t good, that He hadn’t heard me and that He had failed both me and my sister. Yet amid the struggle, God never let go of my hurting, broken heart. The more I wrestled with Him, the more I understood that God had indeed answered my every prayer... just not the way I had expected! God is not offended by our questions or our angered frustrations. He Himself was a man of sorrows; acquainted with grief. As I walked through this shadowing valley, I came to realise that Jesus had understood my every thought, feeling and frustration. He once
12
watched His own Son walk this walk before me, but He can also see the bigger picture ahead. It was not the immediate moment that impelled Jesus to walk to the cross, but rather the joy that was set before him. It was a future perspective that meant he could endure all the pain at Calvary. That joy was you, me and my sister Debbie at the other side of the cross; a secured eternity for each and all of us to one day be seated with Him in Heavenly places! A hope of what is to come. I began to see a glimpse of God’s bigger picture. Through my tears, I searched for the answers to my many questions. God encouraged my broken heart and realigned some of my ‘dodgy’ perspectives through the truths of His Word. 2 Corinthians 4:1618 (NIV) says; “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is seen is eternal.” Please understand that nothing about
FEATURED | burying my sister was ‘light’ and ‘momentary’, but reading this truth renewed my hope. God had answered my every prayer. Outwardly Debbie really was wasting away, in every sense of the word, but when Jesus released her from her torment and suffering, she was instantly and inwardly renewed. She was in a place where every tear was wiped from her eyes; a place where there was “no more death or mourning or crying or pain”. (Revelation 21:4 – NIV) This was the living hope that flooded my heart and soul; an eternal assurance that one day I would see her again in our Father’s House! I suddenly understood that God did come when I called! Yes, God could have healed my sister and restored her ‘my way’ but He didn’t. Now she is wholly and completely free! My best hope for her could never have achieved this, but God’s hope at work in her life and death, did. This living hope at work in a devastating situation not only paved the way for her rescue but also my salvation. God’s kindness and grace know no bounds! It is absolutely true that God works everything together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28). The presence of God is not the absence of heartache and struggle in our lives. But if we allow the living hope of Jesus Christ to anchor our
hearts and souls, then we can live in complete assurance that any physical end is not an eternal one! Through any valley of death that we should walk, be encouraged that Jesus has gone ahead of us. His rod and His staff will comfort us. But how? How can 2 pieces of wood bring any comfort in such a time of anguish? Well...two pieces of wood once stood on a hill at the top of another valley so that you and I could pass from death to life. The Cross of Jesus Christ will never lose its power, even in the midst of any grief or loss. “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf” Hebrews 6:19 (NIV) It is through the Cross that Hope was made manifest. Through Jesus we can know God’s eternal comfort and peace; a living hope in the face of death and a light in the darkest of times. How To Have 2 Ways Hope In The Grieving Have An Eternal Perspective
We can live in assurance that any physical end is not an eternal one.
Allow God
God is the perfect healer, He knows exactly what you need and when. Put your trust in Him and allow Him to comfort you and heal the areas within you that need healing and restoring.

| GLOBAL IMPACT OPERATION BLESSING
Disaster Relief In Albania After The Earthquake
At the end of November 2019, Albania was hit by a large earthquake causing extensive damage and leaving many families without food, homes and basic amenities. CBN’s Operation Blessing was mobilised, and a team was sent to help those in need. This is Shahay’s story. Shahay is a single mum with four children. Winter was coming, and her home was destroyed by the earthquake. We found her living in a tent. “The plaster of the ceiling was coming down and I couldn’t see anything. The noise was like cracking bones. I was terrified.” she recalls. Her son, Mariele says, “I thought the building was gonna collapse and we were going to be buried in the ruins.” On the day Operation Blessing came to her village, Shahay and her children at last got the some help they desperately needed. The local pastor said they had never been shopping before. So, Operation Blessing was able to take them shopping for the first time, buying them new winter coats and boots. “I needed shoes for my kids because their feet get wet. I love that they now have shoes to wear and their feet are warm.” said Shahay, with a smile on her face. The Operation Blessing team were also able to provide Shahay’s family with a box of food and household supplies, along with a new propane heater and a hot plate for cooking. She said, “I want to thank everybody that helped us. It’s not just the food and other things—it’s the love I received from you. Thank you.”

SUPERBOOK SCHOOLS
Superbook Is At Work In Schools Sharing Jesus In Schools
During December our CBN Europe team took Superbook into primary schools across the UK. Using a mixture of clips from the show, craft activities and skits, we had the opportunity to share the gospel with over 200 children and staff. We have had some incredible feedback from pupils and teachers and are excited to see doors open for us to further engage with schools across the coming months, especially with Easter around the corner. Please continue to pray for favour as we seek to expand our schools’ outreach, working alongside teachers and providing exciting opportunities to engage children in faith-based learning. Here is some of the responses we had from our year 2 pupils (ages 6-7): “I learnt all about Jesus!” “I learnt about angels today.” “I learnt that sin broke us from Jesus, and He was born 2000 years ago.” Even the staff enjoyed the day... “Super informative and engaging for the children.” “Thank you for visiting today – you were so lovely with our children, they enjoyed learning with you.” Thank you for your continued support that enables us to impact the lives of so many young people.

Love In The Community Rachel Loynes Receptionist & Administrator
During Jesus’ time on Earth he was asked a question by one of the men considered to be an expert in Biblical laws, a pharisee, and it is recorded in Matthew 22:36-40;
live in the streets and houses around us, those who shop in the same shops or eat and drink in the same pubs and cafes. These are our neighbours and they are everywhere.
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” - (NIV)
Love your neighbour
Have you ever wondered how you could reach your neighbours with the love of Christ? Can you make an impact in the world around you? There are many problems in the world that we cannot solve. We may give to charity, pray or maybe even to work for one of the many organisations making a difference.
16
There is also a world at our own fingertips; those who
We may not be able to immediately give them the gospel, but we can start by building relationships. If we are able, maybe we can join a club in our area, a choir, a reading group, or even a gym! Perhaps even talking to the one who always comes to the café at the same time as you, but sits there alone? These are places we have been called to impact, showing the love of God through relationship. Jesus modelled this by meeting people where they were. He walked along the seashore and called some men to Himself. These men would have been tough and strong as
FEATURED | fishermen, even more so than our modern-day equivalent. Jesus began to build a relationship with these men. He didn’t start with telling them all the things they have done wrong, but he began with loving them, taking the time to get to know them. He taught them about God’s love and God’s ways in a language that they would understand. Often, teaching them using stories and parables.
and patience. It may not even be something that you ever see the harvest of. But have faith to believe that you can make a difference in the lives of those around you. As we do our part, by loving others and speaking His truth, God takes our ‘loaves and fishes’ and turns them into something incredible. He will work in us and through us, because He loves us.
He taught them for three years until they were ready to hear the reason He came to earth – the work of the cross. He got to know these men and to build up a trust with them, so much so that they would listen to what he told them, even though these things were difficult for them to hear.
“I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.” - 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NLT)
The reason we know the message of Jesus today is because of the relationship that He built up with these first disciples. The love and acceptance that He showed them, the truth of His words and the miracles that couldn’t be denied, all recorded and shared throughout the world. The result of consistent community, building together and trusting one another. Are there people or groups in your own life where you could begin to build relationships? We can show them the love of Christ just by being ourselves and letting them be themselves with you. Within these relationships we can ask Holy Spirit for opportunities to share the gospel with them and prepare their hearts for that message as you pray for them. For some their faith will not be immediate. It might take time...

5 Ways to Engage Your Community
It can sometimes feel very daunting to start walking out this thing called community. Maybe it feels more difficult because it’s literally on your doorstep, but that is in fact the beauty of it; you don’t have to go far to make a difference. Let me encourage you – you have been placed by God in the very place He needs you to be right now. There is something beautiful and unique that you can bring to the table, whatever your social predisposition. Here are a few things to get you going: Start Small – You don’t have to start with organising a 17-course tasting menu for every single family on your street, closing roads and setting up bunting across the lampposts. Start by inviting your immediate neighbour round for a coffee...maybe even a cake. That’s it. Practical Help – Depending on where you live, why not think about a street or block activity, such as a street clean up. This can be a very practical and inclusive beginning to building community together. A shared goal for the good of the whole; inclusive of all ages, genders and abilities. Each playing their part to build something together.
18
Feed Them – Food is always a winner. Maybe you can include your church small group or a few families together to host a breakfast for your neighbours. It breaks down barriers and opens the doors to conversations. For the last few years I have been involved in hosting breakfasts and BBQ’s for our communities, seeing great engagement and ongoing relationships built with the communities that we live. It works! Key Dates – Look at key times of year that you can gather to build ‘family’ together. Christmas and Easter are always good opportunities and people are open to joining together. Keep Your Eyes Peeled – It’s not being nosy to notice someone who may be lonely or struggling. We live in a time where communication is so easy, but connection can be so difficult. They are two very different things. Ask God to open your eyes to those who may need connection with others and with God. This is by no means a tick-list to success, but I hope it has got the cogs turning. I wholeheartedly believe that when we step out in faith to engage with the lost around us, God always meets us on the other side, and blows away all our expectations.
