But then of course part of us dies, too. Or we can ask God to open up another route for that love to travel.”

Dear Friends, Love. A short, four-letter word – at least in our English language; yet the most profound and strongest force in the world. In the quote above, Corrie ten Boom connects love with pain – when it is rejected. Love can hurt – and many of us have experienced this one way or another. In our family, friend circle, or relationship.

Sadly, many people today live without knowing God’s definition of love. With hearts grown cold and walls built up high to avoid the pain of rejection, many people live void of God’s transformational love. As a result, many live with a negative self-image, painted by past experiences and a vicious circle of hate and disappointment.

The good news is that God’s love came down in Jesus – who showed us the father heart of God. In Him is complete healing, forgiveness, restoration. He fills the void in our empty hearts and

brings complete transformation when we make that decision to make Him first in our lives. It is the miracle of God’s love – we cannot understand it. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 KJV).

Let us live in His love and be a channel of His love to others around us. As a CBN partner, you are bringing God’s love to a hurting world – to see harts warm up to the greatest love of all – personified in Jesus. Thank you for enabling us to make the Name of Jesus known to every household in the UK, Europe and beyond!

Bound to the Cross

by Love

T

he last supper Jesus shared with His disciples was a Seder, commemorating how God set the Israelites free from bondage.

It helps us see the enormous significance of Jesus taking the cup and saying, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

(Matthew 26:28)

they went to the Mount of Olives. There, Jesus would pray in Gethsemane, “Can this cup pass from me?” He understood what was ahead. He knew Isaiah had prophesied that His visage would be marred more than any man.

Given that Jesus sweat drops of blood while praying in the garden, imagine what happened to Him on the cross as He became sin on our behalf and God turned His face away.

He added, “I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” He was essentially saying, “I’m forsaking the pleasures of this world until the day when all the redeemed can gather in My Father’s kingdom. I’m doing this for your sake.”

It makes what the Romans did to Him seem small. It makes the scourging, the crown of thorns, and the nails in His hands and feet seem small in comparison. If I were preparing for this, I would not be singing. Yet that’s what Jesus did on the way to Gethsemane.

After the Seder, they sang a hymn as

A Seder’s last song is Psalm 118, which

begins, ‘Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!’

It then commands Israel and those who fear the Lord – which includes the Gentiles and us today – to say, “His mercy endures forever.”

So as Jesus was singing, He was declaring, “This is for all people, for all time.”

The psalm continues, ‘The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.

What can man do to me? The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. The Lord has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death.’ (v. 6, 14, 17–19).

TEACHING | 5 Verse 24 says, ‘This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.’

It’s amazing to think that as Jesus went to Gethsemane, He could rejoice that the day appointed for the salvation of all people had come.

Then verse 27 states, ‘Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.’

In Jewish tradition, sacrifices were not bound to an altar; yet Jesus sings this while preparing to be bound – nailed to a cross.

We’re the reason Jesus went to the cross – giving us freedom, forgiveness, mercy, and new life. And He was bound there by love so we can live with Him for all eternity.

OUTREACH TO THE NETHERLANDS Thanks to your support to the ministry of CBN, CBN Nederland continues reaching out to Dutch speaking audiences in The Netherlands and Belgium. The Dutch website – which offers ministry updates and articles that inspire hope and faith in Jesus can be visited at: www.cbnnederland.nl.

Do you know how CBN Nederland started out? It all began when a young man named Chris sent an email to CBN Europe, asking why there was no CBN office in The Netherlands. What Chris did not know when he sent that email is that I had a longstanding vision to reach my home country with the Good News of Jesus, and I was so thrilled by his email as a sign that God was at work! After praying and receiving God’s confirmation to go ahead, I met with Chris in The Netherlands to discuss the next steps – we prayed together, and it felt as if we had been working together for a long time already. Thank You Lord for Your leading and provision!

Today, CBN programmes including the international 700 Club and Superbook in Dutch can be viewed on Christian cable channel – ‘Family 7’, who offer a platform for a wide variety of wholesome Christian programming for TV and online. Our Senor Editor, Seb, works closely with Chris to customise the programmes for the Dutch audience. We collaborate closely with Family 7 to reach a young generation through Superbook. We in the process of dubbing Season 3 of Superbook into Dutch. This is all made possible by the generous contributions of CBN donors and our friends and partners at Family 7. We praise God for this Kingdom collaboration and thank God for open doors for the Gospel in The Netherlands!

Thanks to your generous support, Chris has been able to establish a solid

8 | FROM THE OFFICE foundation for the Gospel. From translating and subtitling ‘Jerusalem Dateline’ for online streaming to drafting our monthly email newsletter and answering online prayer requests – Chris works day in day out to share the Gospel through our various platforms.

We recently launched the first 13 episodes of Superbook in Dutch on YouTube and already, we have over 450 subscribers, and more than 50,000 video views!

In the past two months we received 75 requests for prayer and the number of requests keeps growing each month. We receive wonderful answers to prayer as we stand together and believe God for a miracle. Here is a recent testimony we would like to share with you: “In April I had send you a prayer request for my sister who was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. After half a year of much treatment and truly a lot of prayer, we received the results last Monday. While on the first scan there were a lot of tumors shown, now on the last scan they did, none of them were there and all the tumours are gone!! We are so thankful ad relieved! My sister had much spiritual growth during those months and we thank God for everything He did!”

This is so encouraging! And we receive many testimonies like this. We thank God for blessing the work of our hands and for every partner and donor who enabled us to step out in this faith initiative. There is much more to come as we are in the process of translating Superbook Academy as an online tool for churches and trust that we will see many children and families impacted by the power of God’s Word and His love for them.

Please pray for Chris, his wife Samira and for the ministry in The Netherlands. This year, we would love to grow a small team to come alongside Chris, and see the ministry grow further. We also hope to launch a Dutch Prayer Line and raise more funds to continue translating Superbook content into Dutch. There is such a need for children’s resources in The Netherlands – and Superbook is much needed!

True Religion “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

should? James says about those who cannot control their words that their religion is worthless. If we evaluated our relationship with God using James’s criteria, how would we fare?

Ancient religions, like Judaism, valued ritual purity in their worship. When one approached the Temple in Jerusalem, you had to ritually immerse; in that way, your worship, your religion, would be pure. James, however, says that true, pure religion is not something you do ritually; rather, it’s how you care for the outsiders of society who are in need.

ithin our Western society, even among Christians, the term “religion” has gained a negative connotation. Such thinking was foreign to the biblical mind. James outlines what true religion is. Notice, it pertains to how we treat others: bridling our tongues, caring for widows and orphans, and keeping ourselves from being soiled by the world. This is a pure and undefiled religion before God. We often describe our faith and relationship with God as pertaining primarily to how we relate to God. Yet James focused it on how we relate to others. Our treatment of others is what ultimately demonstrates our relationship with God. So, let’s look at this for a minute.

Our social media world encourages us to communicate, to share our thoughts and opinions, to comment on others’ thoughts and opinions. How many use such platforms to “set others straight”?

Is that bridling our tongues? Just because we can say it and have the platform to do so, does that mean we

James, like his brother Jesus, recognized that the evidence of a sound relationship with God is how we relate to others, particularly the less fortunate. He reserved harsh words for those who do not bridle their tongue.

He defined what religion truly mattered to God: our treatment of others. We relate to God by how we relate to others.

PRAYER Father, help me to guard my lips today, and may I keep myself pure and love those around me, especially those in distress. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Servant or Served?

“Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

M

any of us are aware that love takes many forms. It can come in the form of flowers and gifts or handwritten letters and kind words.

It may come in the form of a hug or a kiss, or in a quiet night in together watching a film.

The kind of love I want to talk about today is the love that serves.

How many busy and over-worked mothers or fathers appreciate it when a load of washing is done without them having to ask? Or when the lawn is mowed for them so that they can spend some time catching up on some rest? This kind of demonstration of love speaks powerfully to some but not necessarily to others. But it is still, no doubt, a form of expressing care and love for another.

Jesus modelled this style of love for us when He walked the earth. He served.

He washed His disciples’ feet and fed the five thousand.

He knew what it meant to love through service.

‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’

(John 15:13 NLT)

Jesus performed this kind of love by laying down His life for us, so that we may live in relationship with the Father. He served us in the most sacrificial way, not just during His life on earth, but in the way that He died.

Soldiers and members of the military will no doubt understand this kind of sacrificial love in ways that general civilians will not. They daily lay down their comfort and safety to love, serve and protect the freedom most of us enjoy.

So, what does servant love look like for you?

Prayerfully consider this question in relation to the people you do life with. Ask God to show you how you can bless those you call friend and family by serving them. As I mentioned previously, not everyone communicates loves in this way, or receives love most powerfully in this way, but I believe that if we can adopt a ‘you first’ culture in our loving relationships, we will be modelling the kind of love that Jesus wants us to show.

Let us remember the second greatest commandment left to us by Jesus: ‘The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

(Mark 12:31 NLT) We tend to look after ourselves fairly well; clothing, feeding, and providing for our own needs. Let’s consider those around us and what their needs may be also, demonstrating love as we do so.

Here are some practical examples of how you can show love to those around you by serving them: Do the washing up or load/unload the dishwasher before they get to it.

Cook them a nice meal, complete with dessert!

Do the grocery shopping and put it away before they arrive home.

Take the driver’s seat so that they can enjoy a relaxing journey.

These are obviously small and relatively humble ways to serve one another, but it can often be that the smaller tasks wear us down the most, so give it a go!

My prayer is that, as we begin to serve one another, in love, our respective loads will become lighter, and we will feel loved and cared for like never before.

How A Packed Lunch Can Transform A Community When the health of family is on the line, education can be pushed out of mind and out of sight. The long-term impact this can have on a society and community can be detrimental. Instead of a thriving, growing, and flourishing town, it barely exists, trying to survive day-to-day.

For the children that can get to school, their education is greatly hindered by their lack of food. The impact this can have on their education can be very damaging as they lack the concentration needed to engage with the lessons and learning.

Rifeta, one of the teachers at the school shares, “70% of the students come from the Roma background. They really need our help because they usually come from multi-member families where nobody is employed and they live and survive through only farming.”

But thanks to our partners, Orphan’s Promise have been able to step in and provide packed lunches that were desperately needed.

Lunches have been provided for the school.

“Now fuelled by this simple packed lunch, these children are able to engage in the learning, embrace curiosity, and equip themselves for a brighter future.”

Rifeta highlights that “when you have a child that knows he has a lunch in school, then there is no need for that child to go aside or beg.”

The difference this has made within the school is tremendous.

“Through the project we have decreased the number of absences, the children are more regular in school, they are more successful, and they have a desire to continue their education. All of that leads to education, employment, and care for their family”.

Where the children have younger siblings, they often stay in education until the 8th or 9th grade. They would then drop out so their siblings could go to school instead.

Thankfully, that’s not the case anymore. The older and younger siblings stay at school together and will often remain there until they have a high school diploma.

Saving A Wounded Teenager Life dealt Judith an unfair blow. At only 16 years old, she received a life-threatening injury. Having been struck by a stray bullet at a nearby protest, she was rushed to a hospital near her home in Nigeria. The bullet entered her abdomen. The doctors gave her a temporary colostomy that could be closed later but it was much too expensive for her family to afford.

“No matter how hard I tried, it seemed I would not be able to come close to getting the money for my daughter’s surgery,” Judith’s mother, Talatu, explained.

But soon, the family learned about the Life-Changing Surgeries program from CBN’s Operation Blessing—and this precious girl received the much-needed procedure. The love and generosity of caring partners around the globe helped make this possible. Her mother was overwhelmed with joy. “Thank you, Operation Blessing!” Talatu said. “God used you to help my daughter.”

In Desperate Need of Care Tiny and frail: that’s how the social workers described 1-year-old Jonathan. The children’s home in the Philippines, supported by CBN’s Orphan’s Promise, had to do something.

He crawled slowly using his belly and hands, was malnourished, and suffered with intestinal parasites.

His father was imprisoned on drug charges. His mother left him and his siblings in the care of a neighbour who gave him to someone in a nearby city.

Thankfully, Jonathan’s siblings ended up in the children’s home. The social workers found Jonathan and reunited him with his siblings.

Thanks to CBN partners, Jonathan has been receiving proper care, nourishment, and the love he so desperately needed. This precious little boy is now a happier, healthier 3-year-old.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts®

Published in 1992, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts® is a book by Gary Chapman that has revolutionised how some express and receive love.

The premise is that there are 5 key ways that we express and receive love: Words of affirmation Acts of service Receiving gifts Quality time Physical touch.

Let’s take a look at each of the languages from the book individually.

Words of Affirmation This love language describes how we can give and receive love by sharing kind and encouraging words with one another. Positive communication, specifically sincere compliments and terms of endearment, foster security and a sense that we are esteemed in the relationship. This does not have to be verbal; the written word can communicate affection just as effectively as telling someone directly how we feel about them.

Acts of Service Acts of service (as touched on in our other featured article in this issue) is where we put the needs of another before our own in a very practical way by serving them. This can be as simple as making someone a cup of tea or taking the bins out! It all communicates that we love them and esteem them in the relationship.

Receiving Gifts Receiving gifts is pretty self-explanatory.

Choosing a special item for the person we love can communicate love by letting them know that

BOOK REVIEW | 17 we know them, see them and care that they are happy. Selecting just the right gift can have a powerful impact on a relationship as it lets the other person know that you have taken an interest in their preferences and have gone out of your way to give them something you know that they would like.

Quality Time Spending time with someone and spending quality time with some­ one are two different things. Quality time is where we intentionally take care to ensure that the time we spend with another communicates that we love them. Shared experiences forge strong bonds in our minds and emotions and let us know that we are secure in our relationship with that person. Giving up your time to be present with someone can be an immensely powerful way of letting them know that you care.

Physical Touch Physical touch can go a long way in communi­ cating love to another, especially when another is in distress. A com­ forting hug or a held hand can let us know that we are not alone and that someone cares deeply for us.

As we shine a spotlight on love as a doing word this REACH edition, let us commit to expressing our love to those around us rather than keeping it to ourselves.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Prophecy and speaking in un­ known languages and special knowledge will become useless.

But love will last forever!

Q.

I’ve given my heart to Jesus, but sometimes I still sin. Does that make me a slave to sin?

A.

The Bible says that he that is born of God does not continuously sin.

But we are all human beings made of flesh, so of course, we will sin, and we will have temptation.

The theologian John Wesley said there was not a day that didn’t go by that he didn’t plead the blood of Christ over his own life. When we pray, we need to remember the blood that Christ shed so that we could have forgiveness from our sins.

As we walk in the light as He is in the light, we will be drawn to have fellowship with other believers and remember that the blood of Christ continuously cleanses us from all sin.

Even as a Christian, you are not going to be free from sin until the day you die and are transported into heaven. We are in the flesh, and the flesh is always warring against us. What we need to do is put to death the deeds of the flesh that we might live for the Lord.

That is the process of sanctification.

Our goal as believers should be to grow closer and closer to Jesus as we live our lives. communicate with us and we can communicate with them.

L

oving our communities not only benefits our local area but can also increase our enjoyment of where we live. Here are a few practical ways that you can become an active member of your local community:

Support local shops Isn’t it lovely to walk around your local town/village/city centre and see lots of independent shops? We are served very well by the bigger chains, of course, but it’s the small, one-off shops that can give a place that sense of uniqueness.

DONATE

One way that we can support these small independent shops is to shop at them!

Whether it be the local greengrocer or butcher, or an independent gift shop or small art gallery, by shopping small we can encourage these shops to remain open.

Recycle Another great way to do your bit for the community is to recycle! This is a simple yet effective way to make sure that you and your local community are doing your best to protect the local environment.

By separating out your disposable waste into general waste and recyclable waste – and even compostable waste – you are helping your community and beyond.

SUPPORT

Donate to charity We all consume a little too much sometimes and having a clear out of our clothes and household bric-a-brac can be a great way to support the local community. By donating unwanted items to a local charity shop of your choice you are helping that charity thrive.

CYCLE

Walk or Cycle I’m sure that you are aware of the climate change conversation that has become a part of our modern lives.

A great way to do a small bit towards preventing global warming is to swap our usual mode of transport, like cars and motorcycles, for walking or cycling.

By making this simple change you can reduce CO2 emissions and protect the atmosphere. Plus, it’s great exercise!

Support local community groups

LIBRARY

This is a really fun way to play an active part in your community. A local notice board (found in supermarkets for example) will often have details of local groups that you can join. These can be local choirs, dance classes or book clubs. It’s definitely worth taking a look – and getting involved!

Use your local library Rather than purchasing new books, why not try out your local library? You can often borrow multiple books for a couple of weeks at a time and even renew them online. It’s also a great place to study!

Hope Line

Superbook

We receive hundreds of calls each month through our Hope Line from all across the UK, Europe, and Australasia. Our teams are consistently astounded by God’s faithfulness in answering prayer; we see salvation, recommitment, and testimonies of God’s faithfulness and provision each and every month. Please pray that we would see an increase in all areas of this ministry for His glory.

Superbook, CBN’s animated Bible series, continues to increase its reach in so many countries across the globe. Please continue to pray that more children and families would be introduced to the hope that is found in Jesus through this ministry. We are wanting to partner with churches to share this great resource further and wider than ever before, please pray that we would see an increased engagement from churches going forward.

TV Production Please pray for the reach of our TV broadcasting, that we would see a rise in engagement with the great content of hope and God’s love going out to the nations each week. Pray for God to use the shows and each segment to speak to those who watch, and that we would see lives changed and people brought closer to Him.

CBN partners with the ‘Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer’ who are building a new God-centred UK monument.

Please pray for more testimonies to come in through our dedicated Eternal Wall phone line to ensure that each brick has a testimony attached to it, as planned. Please pray for the building progress itself also as the building work begins this year.

Please pray for the reach of our social media, that we would reach many with the new initiatives and content that is being brought out in the coming year.

Please pray for creativity for the team, that we would be able to share the love, hope, and peace of the Gospel in a fresh new way bringing people toward Him.

Please continue to pray for the work that Operation Blessing is doing with Hope Boxes; since January, this project has seen many families fed through the distribution. Please pray that this work would continue to expand.

TESTIMONIES This edition we would love to come around some more testimonies to encourage you that God is working and is always answering our prayers. We pray that these testimonies from our callers inspire you!

HEALING Monica called to testify that, after listening to our program two days ago, God healed her of her spinal issues and her spine is fully healed!

PRAISE A worried Sandra called concerned for the welfare of her son after hearing no communication from him for some time. We called on the name of Jesus. Whilst we were praying...her son called trying to get through! God is faithful!!

HEALING Louise called saying that her eyesight was damaged after a surgery, and she needed to use glasses to be able to read anything. In August, Terry shared the word of knowledge on the show that God is healing eyes and that it will be a process but there is healing coming. Louise received this word and today she woke up, being able to read without her glasses! She said that it is a huge improvement and that she still believes for a full restoration. Thank you, Jesus!

PROVISION Lydia’s daughter found accommodation in London – she was looking for a flat, but the Lord

gave her a house! God is faithful and dependable. Thank you, God. HEALING Have had a call from Cynthia to give huge thanks and praise to the Lord for coming through for her.

He has blessed her with relief from severe anxiety ahead of a medical appointment. Cynthia is very grateful to the prayer line too for being alongside her in prayer. Thank you, Lord.

RECOMMITMENT Chanel called to thank us for praying with her as she was angry with God when she lost her dad a few months ago. After praying with us she decided to recommit her life to Jesus. Now she wants to become our partner. Her exact words were “Thank you for being there for me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Praise God!
