What a 60th anniversary year! In 2025, we celebrated a Diamond Jubilee marked by gratitude, joy, and a shared belief in our Bay’s future. Sixty years ago, CBMM began as a one-building historical society on the Miles River. Today, we’re recognized around the world as a model of museum excellence in maritime heritage and education. That distinction belongs to you. Every exhibition, every restored vessel, every child who steps aboard a historic boat for the first time—these impactful scenes are all made possible by the generosity of our community. This year reminded us that CBMM isn’t a museum of the past—it’s a museum that uses the past to illuminate the present and inspire action for the future. The traveling exhibition Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad shares a vital story, exploring the lesserknown maritime aspects of the Underground Railroad while highlighting stories of enslaved African Americans’ journeys to freedom along Atlantic Coast water routes, including the Chesapeake Bay. Right now, we’re reimagining our seminal exhibition Oystering on the Chesapeake, connecting our maritime history to today’s most urgent environmental questions, from aquaculture’s promise to the everyday choices that shape the Bay’s health. We’re also taking CBMM beyond our waterfront. Our meticulously restored 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle will soon become a floating classroom addressing blue-green issues, giving students and guests hands-on experiences with oysters, water quality, and the working waterfront—bringing history and science together on the waters that inspired it all. In the pages that follow, you will see the full picture of what your generosity helped build this year— and a glimpse of what’s ahead as we carry CBMM’s mission into its next 60 years. Dear Friends,
When most people think of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, they picture a visit to our campus—walking the docks, touring the Lighthouse, and perhaps watching a shipwright at work. That image is real, but it’s only one entry point into a much larger story. This year’s Impact Report is a report about reach, and the many ways CBMM meets people across campus and beyond. Reach can mean a student stepping aboard for the first time through one of our on-the-water programs, whether on PATRIOT or a historic workboat. It can be adults filling our Shipyard Programs to learn traditional skills and techniques through handson projects, and it means families gathering for Family Funday Sunday or one of our Chesapeake Celebrations to discover the wonders of the Bay together. It can also mean honoring the watermen whose knowledge continues to shape this region, and welcoming new audiences through innovative exhibitions, programs, and events that open our doors a little wider each year. Reach also happens quietly, behind the scenes. Our archival and preservation teams safeguard vessels, curatorial artifacts, photographs, and stories that might otherwise be lost. Often invisible, this work ensures the Chesapeake’s history endures for academics, researchers, and generations who haven’t yet discovered it. This is all made possible because of your generosity. You are not simply supporting a museum on the water; you are supporting an array of transformational experiences that touch classrooms, shipyards, sailing and power vessels, and neighborhoods far beyond our campus. As you turn these pages, I hope you will see your own impact reflected in each story. And I hope you’ll feel, as I do, that CBMM’s reach is really a reflection of this community’s shared love for the Chesapeake Bay. With gratitude,

Winni e Estelle’s Next C hapter CBMM’s 1920 Chesapeake Bay buyboat Winnie Estelle is in the home stretch of a major refit in our working Shipyard that includes the replacement of its original keel. We have been documenting the project through photographs and video updates that showcase the shipwrights working to prepare this historic vessel for its return to the water. Thank you to our donors for their continued support of this extensive project that will ensure Winnie Estelle’s future. Stay tuned for details on Winnie’s relaunch and new cruise offerings coming soon!

YOUR MUSEUM
YOUR COMMUNITY Our community partnerships and programs are the heartbeat of our campus and integral to fulfilling our mission. These collaborations extend our reach and impact and help us preserve the Chesapeake’s rich cultural heritage while serving our community in meaningful ways.
Student Programs
It was a record-breaking year for our student programming with a total of 6,719 participants across on-campus field trips and in-school education programming, including 5,251 students, 580 teachers, and 888 chaperones. We were thrilled to work with students across the Eastern Shore and beyond, including welcoming all third, fifth, and eighth graders from Talbot County Public Schools for field trips and all high school environmental science classes from Wicomico County Public Schools.
Rising Tide
Through the Rising Tide after-school program, we hosted 28 middle-school students for a total of 392 program days. Supported by our donors, this program blends creativity, craftsmanship, and fun while teaching students technical skills, STEM competencies, and essential life skills through hands-on woodworking and building projects.
After-School Clubs
Our educators headed out into the community to share after-school programming in partnership with Easton Elementary School, Tilghman Area Youth Association, Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center, and Building African-American Minds. In total, this new program reached 99 children for a total of 352 program days throughout the school year..
Free Fishing Fridays
We welcomed 179 children and adults for catch-and-release fishing with our staff and volunteers through Free Fishing Fridays and programming with partner organizations like Easton-based Building African American Minds. Many of our participants were fishing for the first time, and we’re proud to report that they were successful, reeling in a variety of fish species from our waterfront.
CBMM Summer Camp
We hosted 206 summer campers for a total of 321 camp weeks, sharing the Chesapeake story through a variety of themes and activities.. We are proud to offer need-based scholarships to make the fun accessible to everyone in our community. 4 2025–26

In 2025, we were proud to celebrate 60 years of CBMM. Throughout the year, we looked back on our six decades of history since we opened to the public on May 22, 1965, and ahead to a bright future. These were just a few of the milestone moments highlighting CBMM at 60!

Our community came together to make our birthday special. We were thrilled to welcome dozens of friends to the Welcome Center for birthday cake and to sing “Happy Birthday” to CBMM. Gifts to the Collection This past year, CBMM accessioned 23 groups of artifacts, 13 collections of photographs, 11 oral history interviews, and nine manuscript collections to its collection, as well as 27 groups of books. These additions were acquired mostly through donations from individuals, families, and businesses. Our collection of regional material culture grew significantly this past year with several notable acquisitions that deepen our preservation of Chesapeake Bay history. Highlights of these recent acquisitions include two muskrat traps from the early 20th century; a canvasback decoy by William Heverin c. 1950; watercolors by Leonard Vosburg; paintings by Ruth Starr Rose; and c. 1890s letters written by Hooper Strait Lighthouse Keeper George Wheatley. CBMM’s archival and photographic holdings also saw exceptional growth, including papers and photographs relating to the Harrison & Jarboe Packing Company; oral history interviews informing the Stories from the Shoreline exhibition; a 1920 photograph of Navy Point; photographs of the Coughlin family with the Chesapeake 20 Riptide; and a digital copy of a c. 1881 hand-drawn map of Bellevue. Rounding out these additions are a model of the steamboat Emma Giles, a bird-carving decoy-making kit by Harry J. Waite, photographs of the Latrobe family and Carroll’s Island Ducking Club, documentation of Alonza Elliott and his workboat Dixie, and a comprehensive collection of photographs of working and racing skipjacks taken by Jay Carroll. From March 1, 2025, through February 28, 2026, contributions and grants totaled more than $8 million, providing vital support for CBMM’s mission and programs. MAKING AN IMPACT In 2025, 265 CBMM volunteers contributed a total of 22,897 hours of service across our organization. That’s the equivalent of 11 full-time positions!

FROM THE SHORELINE You’re invited to be among the first to experience Stories from the Shoreline! Now open in the Welcome Center’s Bill Millar Pavilion, this new long-term exhibition offers an immersive exploration of the Chesapeake Bay through the voices, traditions, and experiences of the people who call it home. Stories from the Shoreline draws on oral histories, memoirs, photographs, and artifacts to reveal how life along the Chesapeake is shaped by the dynamic relationship between land and water. This yearsin-the-making exhibition features dozens of personal stories illuminating pastimes and passions across generations, including shoreline fishing, waterfowling, plein air painting, eco-tourism, community conservation, and more. Stories from the Shoreline is made possible thanks to philanthropic leadership from Maxine & Bill Millar, Judy & Henry Stansbury, and The Vitale Foundation, along with generous support from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority and CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
