FISCAL YEAR 2025

Dear Friends and Supporters of CBMM,

As we proudly celebrate the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s 60th anniversary this year, I am honored to take on the role of Board Chair and to share this special milestone with you, our dedicated community of supporters.

Looking back on the past year, I am inspired by the remarkable achievements made possible through your generosity and unwavering commitment to our mission. With your support, we enjoyed our first successful season with the new harbor cruises vessel PATRIOT, hosted the impactful exhibition Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad, and welcomed thousands of PK-12 students and summer campers to campus—a true testament to our growing impact and presence on the Chesapeake region and beyond.

It is a time of reflection and celebration, and I am excited to share with you this 2025 Impact Report and Donor Roll, a snapshot of what we have accomplished together. These milestones highlight not only our progress but also the enduring spirit of community and collaboration that propels CBMM forward.

Thank you for your continued support, passion, and belief in our mission. As we honor our history and look ahead to a bright future, I am thrilled to be part of this journey with each of you.

The year ahead is full of promise and excitement, and I look forward to continuing our great success and celebrating CBMM with our community.

Here’s to celebrating 60 years of maritime heritage, education, and exploration, and to many more years of shared success.

With gratitude,

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s 2025 Impact Report. As we celebrate a momentous milestone—our 60th anniversary—we reflect on our journey and look eagerly toward a future where CBMM continues to shape the wider maritime story on the global stage.

This year, CBMM’s impact extended far beyond our shores. As President of the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM), I had the privilege of representing CBMM at meetings across London, Paris, and various locations in Europe this past March. These global engagements have reinforced the importance of the Chesapeake Bay as a vital part of the world’s maritime network—what I like to think of as the Bay being a critical “highway” in the larger, interconnected highway connecting countries and communities around the globe.

Through these international conversations, conferences, and collaborations, CBMM is positioned as a key player in the worldwide conversation about maritime preservation, education, and community engagement. Our involvement at this level amplifies the significance of our work here at home and underscores the impact we can have on the broader maritime ecosystem.

This spring, we hosted a special, exclusive Member Night screening of David Attenborough’s inspiring new film, “Ocean with David Attenborough”, in honor of World Ocean Day. The event was in partnership with ICMM, with screenings held across the globe by our member organizations, creating a truly international moment of shared learning and commitment to ocean stewardship. These opportunities to connect and collaborate with maritime leaders and peers worldwide are what make CBMM unique, and they underscore our ongoing role in the global highway of maritime dialogue and stewardship.

Thanks to your support, CBMM continues to serve as a beacon, promoting our maritime heritage while connecting locally, nationally, and internationally. Our achievements over the past year highlight how CBMM is not just a local institution, but a crucial part of a much larger story—one of shared heritage, sustainable stewardship, and ongoing discovery.

As we celebrate 60 years of history, we look forward to marching into the future, strengthened by our global partnerships and driven by our collective missions.

Thank you for your unwavering support and for being part of this extraordinary voyage. Here’s to many more years of connection, discovery, and impact—both here at home and across the world’s maritime communities.

With warm regards,

President

Featured Loan: Sailor, Iron Dog

In the winter of 2024, the cast iron dog Sailor underwent conservation efforts in preparation for a move inside the Welcome Center. Sailor has been exhibited on CBMM’s campus for decades and generations of families have taken photos with the beloved statue.

For the cross-campus move into a new exhibition space, Lead Exhibitions Designer & Projects Manager Jim Koerner removed old paint and rust. Assistant Curator Gabriella Cantelmo researched the original paint colors and patterns to maintain historical integrity. Thanks to volunteer Mark Eney, Sailor received many coats of paint and a final sealing coat to preserve the venerable statue’s appearance for many years to come.

Learn more by visiting Sailor in the Welcome Center, where he now greets our guests daily!

Sailor has been graciously loaned to CBMM in memory of Dr. James B. Seth and his son, Dr. Joseph B. Seth, by William S. Griswold III and Susan S. Griswold Herst.

Last year, 238 CBMM volunteers contributed a total of 20,800 hours of service across our organization. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who do so much to help further our mission and make our campus a better place.

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!

This list does not include those who graciously volunteer their time and talent as part of CBMM’s Board of Governors and Board Committees who are listed on the inside cover of this

CBMM’s 60 th Anniversary Celebration

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum officially opened its doors on May 22, 1965, as a project of the Historical Society of Talbot County amid a still-bustling complex of workboats, docks, and seafood packing houses on Navy Point in St. Michaels, Md.

Over the past six decades, CBMM has blossomed into a world-class maritime museum and vital community partner serving more than 85,000 guests per year on its 18-acre campus in fulfillment of its mission to preserve and explore the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and to make this resource accessible to all.

Throughout the year, CBMM is taking a look back on its six decades through a series of mission-focused videos highlighting key themes across its history. The anniversary festivities also include a “Celebrating 60 Years of CBMM” logo, social media highlights, an exclusive CBMM Member Night program, and more milestone moments woven into its annual festivals and programming.
