Reaching Out to the Korean Community – Within North America

Paul Hyon with Bill McAvinney

In Jesus’ Great Commission, recorded in Matthew 28:19, He said to, “Go into all the world and make disciples.” Sometimes the mission becomes a bit easier when the world comes to us, as has been the case with South Korea. For CBMC, a unique network of CBMC groups has been actively seeking to minister to Korean American business and professional men across the United States and Canada. Under the umbrella of Korean CBMC of North America, many of these groups conduct their meetings in the Korean language and reflect their ethnic culture. However, this is slowly changing as a new generation of U.S.-born Korean Americans become involved in the ministry. Since 2018, Paul Hyon has served as President of Korean CBMC of North America and is excited to see consistent growth across the United States and Canada. Recently about 200 people attended its 24th annual convention in Dallas, Texas.

New CBMC teams are now active in Manhattan and Long Island, NY with both Korean Americans and Americans involved. “We have been mainly first-generation and ‘1.5-generation’ Korean-speaking groups in the United States and also in

Toronto and Vancouver, Canada,” Hyon said. He explained “1.5-generation” means people who were born in South Korea and immigrated to the U.S.A. during their childhood or teenage years.

The history of CBMC in Korea dates back to 1953 when Cecil Hill, an American CBMC member, introduced the ministry to businessmen there during the Korean War. Korean CBMCs were started in Los Angeles in 1995, and since have expanded into 30 of the largest U.S. cities, with approximately 2,000 members of Korean ethnicity.

Fitting into the 1.5-generation category himself, Hyon is striving to bring continuity to the ministry; determine how best to enfold new U.Sborn members, some of whom do not even speak Korean; and also to instill a sharper focus on CBMC’s twofold mission of reaching and discipling business and professional men for Jesus Christ.

Hyon has a special appreciation for Operation Timothy since that was a significant factor in his spiritual growth, and is eager to see more Korean American members using it as a primary discipling tool. “I am a direct result of Operation Timothy, and now I disciple about three people every week. Some that I have discipled have gone on to disciple others – we are now up to the fourth generation of disciples and disciplemakers.

“Until about 10 years ago, Korean CBMC was more of a social business community. Since most of the meetings were being conducted in Korean, many

“So, one of my areas of emphasis is about raising up leaders through the Paul-Timothy, mentoring-discipleship model of Operation Timothy. It is taking time, but we can see it slowly impacting people.”

of our groups were struggling with how to reach out to the next generation. Now we are trying to refocus our mission, aligning with the U.S. vision for evangelism and discipleship,” he said. This doesn’t mean U.S.-born, Englishspeaking members don’t enjoy getting together with the Korean ethnic groups, Hyon said. But being raised in America, they feel comfortable being a part of CBMC activities that appeal to all ethnicities.

There is one more reason for excitement: Korean CBMC of North America can potentially be a great asset in CBMC’s Vision 650 goal for building local ministries in 650 U.S. cities and towns by 2028. Currently, Korean groups are established in a number of cities where there is no other CBMC presence, and younger Korean American members can provide a natural connection to non-Korean peers and colleagues. ■

❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱❱ YP Impact Story: Discovering Ministry in the Marketplace Early in his life, Scott Cheo’s life revolved around baseball. His high school team won a regional championship, and after two years at Saddleback Community College, he was offered a baseball scholarship to the University of California at Berkeley. When things didn’t go as expected there, Cheo was granted a release and accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Biola University. He hoped to continue his baseball career after college, but when that didn’t work out, Cheo moved on to Plan B: to become a pastor or engage in some other form of full-time vocational ministry. He had committed his life to Jesus Christ while attending Saddleback, and his transfer to Biola enabled him to grow rapidly in his faith. However, Cheo’s pastoral aspirations had to be set aside, as well. He had married his wife, Katelyn, in 2002 and when they started raising a family in 2008, it soon became clear his part-time income from giving private baseball lessons wouldn’t be sufficient. Taking on an additional financial burden by attending seminary was out of the question. So, after finishing his degree at the University of California-Irvine, Cheo accepted a job with a bank. “Shoot, I’m just like a common man,” he thought. His thinking would soon change.

As a Young Professional still building his career, Scott no longer feels a tug toward a vocational ministry role. “CBMC has been the biggest blessing for me.” “God helped me to realize that by working in the bank, there would be a lot of people around me who would never walk into a church. I could become their ‘pastor,’” he said. The question became how to go about doing that. His answer came indirectly while going

to networking events to build business. “I found myself clinging to Christians in those groups, so I thought I’d try to find a Christian networking group. Then someone asked if I’d ever heard about CBMC.” Cheo located a CBMC Connect3 group meeting in Laguna Niguel. The morning it met he arrived in a suit and clutching a handful of business cards. “What I found was a group of guys dressed in T-shirts and casual shirts, going through Operation Timothy and talking about Jesus,” he recalled. “I put away my business cards and was excited to be able to join the discussion.” One of the men he met was the C3 team’s leader Marcelo Mills, himself a young professional. After about two years, Mills urged Cheo to start a new CBMC group in San Clemente. He did so in February 2018, and the C3 team meets Tuesday mornings at a local restaurant in nearby Talega. Each week 6-8 men use a variety of CBMC resources, including the “10 Attributes of a Marketplace Ambassador,” LivingProof, and chapters from Operation Timothy, usually devoting several weeks to discussing each one. “When we meet, God’s Word is number one, followed by sharing from our hearts and glorifying God through our conversations. Then we close in prayer,” Cheo said. “CBMC keeps me grounded. Like a lot of businessmen, I’m tempted to jump back into my occupation in search of the biggest deal but being with guys in our CBMC team and leaders like Mark Bundy; I’m always reminded that our first mission is the Great Commission.” At his bank, Cheo works with high-networth individuals, seeking to provide solutions to their personal financial needs. “My involvement with CBMC has slowed me down in a fast-paced world; it keeps me focused on the people I’m engaged with, rather than the deal and

the dollar. CBMC constantly reminds me of the curiosity and care I should have for my clients, prospects and coworkers, hoping for opportunity to share my faith with them in meaningful ways.” He cited the time a manager from one of the bank’s other branches came to conduct his performance review. “During the review, she paused and said, ‘Could I ask you about Jesus?’” Cheo said. “I replied, ‘Why ask me?’ She answered, ‘You’re known as one of the Christians in the company.’” That conversation led to her attending church with Cheo and his wife, and seeing her receive Christ and become baptized. “There are also great times of encouragement with other Christians in the office, especially when they’re discouraged or under stress. I try to help them keep focused on our main goal, that we’re not here to worry. We’re here to be a witness to who Jesus is.” Cheo said his wife is very supportive of his role in CBMC. “She knows I’m using my gifts for teaching and facilitating. Katelyn loves that I’m staying focused and seeking the fruits of it.” She also appreciates the wise counsel of men like Bundy, who repeatedly has urged Cheo to “protect the dinner table.” “Whenever I meet with Mark, he puts things into perspective,” he said. “He reminds me to not get into a moment thinking I don’t have enough time to go home and be with our family, which has now grown to six kids, five girls and a boy, the oldest being ten and the youngest two-year-old twin daughters. “I am so thankful there is a Christcentered organization like CBMC breathing life into the business world. I’m excited to be a part of it.” ■

New LAMP Bible Study Seeks To Cast Light on Love at Work

sermon on 1 Corinthians 13, concluding with the statement that ‘love never fails.’ I had never thought of that, especially within a business context.” The purpose of his LAMP study is not to provide a definitive word on how to put love into action in a work setting, but to introduce the idea and encourage others to consider how to apply it to their own circumstances. “I know there are many other practices and principles we could come up with concerning love. That’s why I hope this study becomes organic, that other people will put their own thoughts and experiences into it. As they work through it individually or in a group, I’d like to see them expand it with their own stories.” ■

John Johnson with his wife

You hear someone talking about “love” in the marketplace. What comes to your mind? One of the first things might be romantic relationships between coworkers, which can prove troublesome in many ways. John Johnson is a strong advocate of love in the workplace, but in a very different sense. Johnson, who has been active with several CBMC groups in Santa Barbara, California for several years, has developed an intriguing study called “Love As a Management Practice” or LAMP. It focuses on 1 Corinthians 13, the so-called “love chapter” of the Bible, which declares: “Love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy, love is not proud, love is not rude, love is not self-seeking, love keeps no record of wrongs, love does not delight in evil but love rejoices in the truth, love always protects, love always hopes, love always perseveres and love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). The study focuses on each of the descriptors for love, seeking to show how, when applied properly, love can

provide a foundation for effective leadership and management. LAMP is being presented online as part of CBMC’s Marketplace Ambassadors Advancement System (MAAS).

To access all the CBMC tools and resources including LAMP, register at advance.cbmc.com

Drawing from 60 years of experience in the business world, in marketing, advertising, management, and consulting, Johnson acknowledges love won’t be found in the curricula of the nation’s top business schools. However, he believes it can be a game-changer for individuals and corporations when expressed and practiced as God intended. “In our society, love is understood as lust, feelings, and emotions. It’s hardly ever considered that love essentially is an action,” he explains. Two sermons served as the catalyst for Johnson’s study. “In the first one, the speaker said God really only had one commandment – to love Him and to love your neighbor. Several weeks later, I heard a
