FROM THE RABBI Two natural gas company service personnel, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of an alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house, a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter. When they finished, the senior supervisor, proud of his physical condition, challenged his younger co-worker to a foot race back to their truck. As they approached the truck, they realized that the woman was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.Gasping for breath, she replied, “When I saw two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I’d better run, too!” We spend a great deal of time running, don’t we? We are running to catch up at work. We are running to keep up at home. We speak of “running” errands. We “rush” off, we drive in the “fast” lane, we stop at the “quick” mart, we buy “fast” food, we use the “express” lane, and we “hurry” back so we can “race” through our meal. Too often our lives are lived in fast forward. No wonder we feel “run down!” One telecommunications company executive went to see his doctor. She listened to her patient’s heart, shook her head and said, “All I get is a busy signal.” An important part of reducing harmful stress is to slow down. Take a walk. Spend some time alone. Be still. Listen to your soul. Surprisingly, you may find you have more energy left for the important work. In time, you may ponder why you ever rushed at all. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. FROM THE CANTOR Yesterday, I returned from my trip to Spain and Portugal with the Cantors Assembly. I have photos and videos to sort through, and I hope to give a talk about my trip sometime in the fall. For now, I’ll go over the main highlights of the trip and share with you some of my impressions. The Germany trip was about reaching out to the German government and people, and seeing how much life in Germany has changed since the 1930’s and 1940’s. Spain was more about visiting places where Jewish life and culture thrived prior to the expulsion of 1492, and about connecting with some of the Jewish communities that are thriving in Spain today. We began our journey in Barcelona. We were treated to an opening presentation by the Barcelona community leader and Architect specializing in Jewish Heritage, Dominique Tomasov. Our scholars in residence, Professor Stephen Berk and Professor Eliezer Papo, also graced us with introductory presentations. Professors Berk and Papo conducted lectures throughout the trip, focusing on Spanish history in general and also the history of Jewish life in Spain. On Day Two, we traveled to Girona, formerly a major Jewish center and home to the famous Ramban – Nachmanides. We toured the Old Jewish Quarter, including the newly restored museum. We returned to Barcelona in the afternoon, where Professor Papo gave a lecture titled “How and When the Crown of Torah Moved to Spain.” On Day Three, we explored Barcelona’s Jewish Heritage, including a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter and the oldest synagogue in the area. Professor Berk then gave a lecture titled, “The ‘Greatest’ Year in Spanish History. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue… and two other things occurred.” We concluded our three-day stay in Barcelona with a concert titled “The Soul of Sefarad,” focusing on music influenced by the Catalan region, of which Barcelona is the Capital.Next month, I’ll continue with visits to Madrid, Cordoba, Granada and Seville. FROM THE PRESIDENT Check us out, side by side. Summer is when Jews shop shuls and as such is the ideal time to encourage friends who have not yet affiliated to drop on in and check us out. We have congregantled “Glimpses into History” on Friday nights and Sermonettes on Shabbat mornings. Lou Bader once again has put together a winning line-up of speakers. Please contact Ari Weisberg, our Membership Chair, to welcome visiting congregants. Todah Rabah to our Pride Committee who had the vision to open our doors and welcome all Jews by hosting our first-ever Pride Shabbat and having a table in the St. Pete Pride Street Fest. More than 170 people showed up for this inclusive Friday night service. We look forward to another new, innovative service with our family oriented Disney Shabbat on Friday evening, August 26th. Kids and adults of all ages are encouraged to join in the celebration of Shabbat set to familiar Disney themed music! Come dressed as your favorite prince, princess or character! My daughter, Danielle, is spending the entire summer at Camp Ramah Darom with Rachel LeVine, Corey Sokolov, Hannah Weiss, Ari Weiss and Avi Reich. Hannah Weiss is a counselor, and Danielle, Rachel and Corey are part of the Gesher group, which is for incoming 11th graders and offers more off-site team building, college visitations and leadership opportunities. It is my hope that our CBI campers can feel empowered to bring some of this Ramah Ruach home to our congregational family. FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING

“Deep in my heart, I do believe that experiential education can, should, and must change the world.” (Billy Planer) Like all educators, I am a collector. Like all collectors, I derive a great deal of inspiration from my collection! My collection has followed me here to CBI: boxes of books, lessons, projects, unclaimed artwork from my past students, as well as picture s of my kids clutching a Torah from Mini-Minyan graduation. I love to reflect on my collection, because the memory takes me to real learning experiences. The laminated seven species poster reminds me of the student who tried carob chips during the Tu B’shvat Seder for the first time: a “Shehecheyanu Moment” that resulted in him promptly spitting it out. The Hamsa hanging on the wall reminds me of the Shrinky Dink Hamsa a student made to celebrate the presence of God in the Purim story. He wore it the next class session as a necklace, and I still have the picture of him wearing it in my phone! My overflowing Passover collection reminds me of a preschool “Exodus:” when confronted with a (plastic tablecloth) sea blocking our escape, a three year old answered the question “Who will help us?” with the answer “God will help!” I’m also a collector of quotes like the one at the beginning of my remarks. They help me to flesh out my goals, to put feelings into words, and to inspire me to bridge the chasm between thinking and doing. Here’s another quote that inspires me: “What we need is a living, breathing Judaism, not an object of veneration kept locked in a box. We need a Judaism with calluses on its hands…” (Rabbi David Ingber) Yes, I am rolling up my sleeves with anticipation as I look forward to the coming year: I hope that we will learn, talk, share ideas, create experiences, and develop a few new calluses! WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Women’s League is Vital to the Shul Participating with other women in a group can richly enhance even a full, modern life. From books and clubs, to exercise classes and coffee dates, this is something that’s showcased everywhere. It’s proven that women, young and old, benefit by listening and encouraging each other. Talk therapy isn’t just an expression; discussion is beneficial for mental and emotional challenges, just as physical therapy is for corporeal ones. Women’s League of CBI (Sisterhood) offers friendship, purpose, and fresh and familiar volunteer opportunities. An exciting new outreach for women at the new moon each month has also just begun! Rosh Chodesh study provides a time to connect with the women of CBI. No matter what your level of Jewish education or involvement, Women’s League welcomes one another as equals. Women’s League is vital to the Shul. Just a little time, a little interest, and a desire to connect with others is all it takes. Start the year right by joining in on the fun! A New Way to Bond

“

Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the Jewish month, has a special significance for women, and celebrating the meaning gives an opportunity to gather, learn, and discuss. Once per month, Rosh Chodesh Women’s Group meets at someone’s home for a lively discussion, good food, and camaraderie. This year the theme is Biblical women. Meetings are usually Sunday mornings at 10:30 am until noon. All are welcome to attend! The first meeting of this year will be on the beach with time set aside for Mikvah. The Mikvah is optional, but you are encouraged to participate. If you’d like to go in the water, bring a towel and your swimsuit and something to change into after the Mikvah. A light dinner will be served after the Mikvah. Johanna Bromberg will present the program from Congregation Beth Shalom (CBS). “Welcome to CBI!” Pride Shabbat on Friday, June 24, 2016, drew 170 people to services from several counties and even other states. Guest speaker Kevin Lane spoke from personal experience about how important it is to be proud of being Jewish and to be true to oneself. CBI vice president, Valerie Hyman, welcomed the attendees with words many have requested we present in this bulletin. Welcome to Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg. Whatever your background, however you identify, whatever your level of Jewish learning - you are welcome here.
