From the Rabbi As you make your summer plans, be sure to make time for the synagogue… “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” This phrase is true for most of us, and we always look forward to summer for a little more leisure time and relaxation The weather is conducive to outdoor activities, schools close for over two months, and it is time to reconnect with family and friends in a more relaxed fashion. The same is very true in the synagogue world. We run on a school calendar so that Rosh Hashana is always at the right time, close to the end of August and the school season. Shavuot concludes the season both for school and in many ways the synagogue year. However, unlike the schools, we do not close our doors during the summer. The mood is a little more relaxed, the activities are not as frenetic, but the synagogue continues to remain open and vibrant 365 days a year.
Shabbat afternoon MInha, Maariv and Havdala services include a period of study. With Shabbat being such a long day, it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the relaxation of the day of rest. Conclude it by coming to CBI and participating in the conclusion of Shabbat before returning to our regular activities. Our Buns Family Library has a great variety of books, videos, dvds and periodicals. Stop by and borrow one and partake in Jewish learning and wisdom. The Pauline Rivkind Preschool provides its summer programs, as our other educational programs begin their preparations for the new year. Our committees continue their diligent work in organizing our activities and services since the work of the synagogue is never done. The summer should be a time for Jewish learning. That can be in the form of personal study, reading or Jewish travel. And of course, our Daily Minyan meets mornings and evenings no matter what the season or the weather. I encourage you to join the Minyan for daily prayer. You will be enriched by the prayer, the community and the wonderful fellowship.
As you make your summer plans, make sure to find some time for CBI. Services on Shabbat morning during the summer are more informal as members of the congregation deliver the sermonettes and lead services. On Shabbat evenings our 7:30 pm Musical Services series brings joy as does the Glimpses in Jewish History Speakers series. I enjoy listening to our congregants as they share their skills and their insights with our community.

Cantor’s Notes
Jeremiah describes and laments the destruction of the Temple. When we read Eicha, we create an atmosphere of mourning by sitting on the floor and reading by candlelight or flashlight. Also, Eicha has a unique trope, which is a hauntingly beautiful melody. When we hear the music of Eicha trope, we hear both deep sorrow and beauty at the same time.
It’s summertime – the season when children are out of school for three months, and when many people go away on vacation. We who live in the 21st Century therefore tend to think of summer as a time for enjoyment and relaxation. I find it interesting that the saddest day on the Jewish calendar – Tish’a b’Av – falls during this season that we tend to think of as happy.

Tish’a b’Av is a day of mourning. According to tradition, both the First and Second Temples were destroyed on Tish’a b’Av, and traditionally, the destruction of the Temples is the primary thing that we mourn on Tish’a b’Av. Over time, this day came to be a day when we mourn all Jewish suffering, including the Bar Kochba rebellion, the expulsion from Spain, and the Holocaust.
But our summertime period of mourning is not confined to Tish’a b’Av alone. We start three weeks earlier on the 17 th of Tammuz, when we commemorate the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 CE. Between the 17 th of Tammuz and Tish’a b’Av, we observe a period of semimourning, when weddings and other simchas are not held. Also, on the three Shabbatot during this period, we read three special Haftarot of Admonition that warn us about the consequences of sin. After Tish’a b’Av, we then have seven weeks when we read Haftarot of Consolation. All together, that makes ten straight weeks when the Haftarot are related to the calendar, and not to the parshiyot.
The liturgical highlight of Tish’a b’Av is the reading of Megillat Eicha, the Book of Lamentations. In Eicha, the prophet

From the President Year number 2 of my presidency is about to begin. I thank you all for the confidence you have shown in my leadership. I am fortunate to work with a great group of dedicated lay leaders and professional staff. On July 1, CBI will begin its new fiscal year and the new Officers and Board will begin their leadership roles. I want to thank Liz Sembler, outgoing Secretary, and Lorne Abrams, outgoing Treasurer, for their tireless efforts on behalf of CBI. I also want to thank Susie Berman, Cindy Weisberg, Chana Olmsted and Cary Reich for their efforts while on the Board of Trustees. I know that they will all continue to be active members of CBI even though their formal service to the Board has ended. I want to welcome Mandi Gross to our Board. I look forward to her growth as a leader of the congregation in which she grew up. Todah Rabah to all of you who attended our annual meeting. It is nice to have the opportunity annually to review all that CBI has accomplished in the past year. We amended our bylaws to decrease the size of the Board of Trustees. Smaller is better is

Please think about how you can become more involved in CBI life in the coming year: Join a committee, chair a committee, attend minyan, strive to become a minyanaire, attend Shabbat services, join Women’s League to cook and bake, volunteer in the office, make donations in honor of your friends and simchas, sing in the CBI choir, volunteer in the Preschool, sponsor a dine and dash for our youth… You get the idea, there are lots of ways to get involved and you may have heard that the more you put into a relationship (yours with CBI) the more you will benefit. SHOFAR SOUNDED DURING THE MONTH OF ELUL During the month of Elul, this year from August 7 September 3, the Shofar is sounded every morning except Shabbat at the conclusion of the Shaharit service. The traditional cycle of tekiah (one blast) shevarim (three blasts), teruah (a series of short blasts) and a final tekiah is sounded daily followed by the recitation of Psalm 27, the Psalm for the Penitential season. Hearing the Shofar reminds us that the High Holiday season is upon us. We are inspired to thoughts of repentance – making peace with our fellow men, with ourselves, and with God. When Rosh Hashana arrives, we sound 100 blasts, an even more powerful reminder that the time to change is now. Finally, we conclude our services on Yom Kippur with a resounding tekiah gedola, signifying that the heavenly gates have closed and that our fate of the coming year is sealed. So come to services each morning during Elul to hear the Shofar, as we begin our spiritual preparations for the upcoming Days of Awe.

I want to thank everyone who helped me to make this a very successful year for Women’s League. The list is too numerous for me to name all and I fear that I will leave some out. So let me say thank you. You know who you are—whatever you did for Women’s League, whether it was attending a meeting, baking, cooking, stuffing, mailing, gluing, modeling, sharing, it was important to me and to our chapter. We have many great plans for the upcoming year and I will give you dates as soon as we have the “Calendar Meeting.” We are also going to be sending out a survey to try to ascertain your interests and desires for Women’s League at CBI. We would like to hear from all of you. So be on the lookout for the survey and be sure to fill it out. Summer time is fun time at Pauline Rivkind Preschool. We put away our school year curriculum and concentrate on our senses. We spend more time outside playing and exploring nature. We also have water play during these hot summer months! Children ages one year through five years may still register for a week or a month for the summer sessions. Spread the Word – Tu B’Shevat is Coming! Tu B’Shevat is Coming! Yes, you’ve read correctly. I know that it’s the beginning of summer, but it won’t be long until Tu B’Shevat (16 January 2014). Please continue reading … Over the years, both CBI and its members have fulfilled many commitments to plant individual trees, and circles, gardens, groves, and parklands of trees in Eretz Yisrael. These efforts have been accomplished through the Jewish National Fund (JNF). Currently, CBI is in the midst of a large forestation project that remains incomplete. Many of the details, however, appear to have been “filed away” because no “champion” came forward … the A-Team has accepted the challenge, and is working to resolve what remains to be accomplished. By the time of the next Review article, this information should be available. Regardless of the details to be uncovered, CBI has a goal to complete our project - hopefully by Tu B’Shevat 5774, but certainly by Tu B’Shevat 5775. Tu B’Shevat is a significant time to hold a completion ceremony commemorating CBI’s great treeplanting achievement. I challenge CBI’ers to participate in and to finish our forestation project. You can accomplish two mitzvot by participating in our project. One, to share in fulfilling CBI’s commitment; and two, to allow CBI, as a partner with JNF, to receive a 20% commission for use in our Israel advocacy programming. In order for CBI to receive its commission, your donation must be made via telephone (800-542-8733) or mail (78 Randall Ave, Rockville Centre, NY 11570) – it cannot be done online. To ensure proper credit of your donation, please indicate Project #002600TP and state that Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg is a JNF partner. Page 16 TISHA B’AV AND THE 3 WEEKS What are the Three Weeks? According to the Mishnah, Taanit 3:16, a number of disasters occurred to our ancestors on both the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av. Two of the disasters, which occurred, concern the destruction of the Second Temple. On the 9th of Av both the First and Second Temples were destroyed. The next Mishnah, Taanit 3:7, states that during the week in which Tisha B’Av, the 9th of Av falls, it is forbidden to both cut one’s hair and to do laundry. From the second Mishnah we see that a number of customs associated with mourning were observed in order to remind us of the gravity of the destruction, which befell Israel. While the Mishnah states the mourning customs are observed only the week in which Tisha B’Av falls, the Talmud brings a number of Tannaitic opinions which hold that the mourning customs are observed from Hodesh Av, from the first day of month of Av (Taanit 29b). It wasn’t until centuries later that the custom developed to observe some of the mourning customs from the 17th of Tammuz. Rabbi Moses Isseries in his glosses on the Shulhan Arukh says, “The custom is to be strict about the prohibitions of doing laundry from Rosh Hodesh, but regarding cutting one’s hair, the custom is to be strict from the 7th of Tammuz” (Orakh Hayyim 551:4). In addition to the prohibitions mentioned in the Mishnah, it has been customary not to perform marriages from the 17th of Tammuz until after Tisha B’Av and some people also minimize the eating of meat and drinking of wine.
