Office Drop Box As a reminder, there is a secured drop box available at the shul and at your service when you are in the building. It is located outside the Synagogue office across from the Judaica Shop. You can drop off messages, contributions, etc when coming to classes, events, meetings, or when dropping off children at school. It is an easy way to communicate within the congregational family. Bikkur Holim One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim –visiting the sick. It is the responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4900 x203, so that as clergy and the synagogue family we can be helpful in moments of difficult or stress.

When the Cantor repeats the Amidah, there is one prayer the congregation must say for itself – the Modim, the prayer of thanksgiving. One statement in the Talmud teaches that in the time of the Messiah, all the sacrifices will be abolished save one – the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Even in the perfect age, there will be a need to offer thanks. Gratitude is the essential religious emotion. When we first wake up in the morning, we say “Modim anahnu lah” – we are grateful to You, God. Throughout the day, blessings awaken in us the sense of wonder, awe and gratitude for all we have been given. The Psalms, the prayers, the rituals we observe, all form a grand bouquet of appreciation to the One whose creation is so filled with wonder. The American holiday that speaks most directly to the Jewish spirit is Thanksgiving. To take goodness for granted is not the Jewish way. This Thanksgiving be sure to include blessings of acknowledgment and appreciation for our many gifts. We are thankful for the bounty we have been given, for the family and friends who warm our celebrations, for the very ability, as Rav states in the Talmud, to give thanks. Join me in the annual Thanksgiving service sponsored by the Clergy Association of Greater St. Petersburg, to be held at First Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon, November 24 at 4:00 PM. Please share with your family and friends the translation of Modim offered by Rabbi Simkha Weintraub. We acknowledge and proclaim that You are Adonai our God and God of our ancestors eternally, throughout all time! From the Cantor One of my former rabbis used to say that Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. I think it’s easy to see why – the message of the day is simple, yet fundamental. Although it was originally a day on which the pilgrims gave thanks to God for bringing them safely to America, for us it is a day on which we can reflect on and recall all that we are thankful for in our lives. In the spirit of the holiday, I would like to share with you some things for which I am thankful: I am thankful that I am able to work in a profession that I love, and that I have the opportunity to serve a congregation filled with such wonderful people. I am thankful that I have my family, who are there for me in both the best and the worst of times. I am thankful to be an uncle – my niece and nephew are adorable. I am thankful to have my friends, many of whom are also colleagues. There are many places in our formal liturgy where we thank God. Upon waking up in the morning, we say “Modeh / modah ani:” “I thank You, enduring Sovereign, for restoring my soul to me in compassion. You are faithful beyond measure.” The psalm for Shabbat begins “Tov l’hodot Ladonai (It is good to thank Adonai).” In Hallel, we say “Hodu Ladonai ki tov (Thank Adonai, for God is good).” We even devote an entire brachah of every Amidah to thanking God: “Modim anachnu lach.” (For all you Hebrew buffs, “modim anachnu” is the plural of “modeh / modah ani”) We say this brachah three times every day, and four times on days when we have Musaf. Let’s take a look at the end of this brachah: “For all these blessings we shall ever praise and exalt You. May every living creature thank You and praise You faithfully, God of deliverance and our help. Barukh Atah Adonai, ‘The Beneficent One’ is Your name, and it is fitting to give thanks to You.” Happy Thanksgiving,

I gave a “State of CBI Address” on Kol Nidre evening. Thank you so much for your kind words telling me how much you enjoyed it. I am including it here for those who were unable to be at the service. Try something that teachers have been doing forever. Before you say something that could be considered a negative, t think of at least one thing that is positive about the situation and say it first, and then think of a positive spin on the negative thing you want to say. Remember: Blame makes everyone feel bad. It is not always necessary to have the last word. Instead, say to yourself: “Today I shall try to be kind.” Moving on to other things. We are participating with 11 Kehillot throughout United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism (USCJ) in Sulam for Strategic Planning. 147 of you completed the survey that was submitted to the entire congregation. What you want to see: Tradition, with change – the actual reason that the Conservative Movement was formed – you are deeply concerned about the present and the future. Youth and young families – you want to see more kids on the bimah and around everywhere. I am so proud of our young Golden Kippah Torah readers who have been on the bimah during these holidays. Learning opportunities, especially prayer and learning during the service Music – stay tuned for information about an upcoming concert here by the group, Tizmoret, Sunday, January 18. From the Executive Director Gratitude: the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful (dictionary.reference.com) This is the November issue of the B’nai Israel Review, and November is the month we, as Americans, give gratitude and celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. And we’ve just come through the Yamim Nora’im (Days of Awe), followed by the beautiful Festival of Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret (the extra day we Jews get to spend “just us” and God), ending with the joyous Simchat Torah celebration with singing and dancing with the Torah. I don’t know about you, but I’m grateful it’s over for this year (even as I look forward to doing it all over again next year)! I feel gratitude for many people and things and, especially in this season, some special people at CBI. I’m grateful to Gerry Werner who stepped up to run our High Holy Days youth services with Youth Advisor, Bianca Levi. Gerry grew up at CBI, and shares his musical talent with us by singing in the choir. Fortunately, the High Holy Days choir gigs are limited to evening services so we drew on his talents in working with our youth. The kids paid attention, learned, and enjoyed. Thank you, Gerry. I’m grateful to Anita Helfand and Selma Gaby for dispensing our High Holy Days tickets when Dianne Gettler left unexpectedly to marry her long-time beau and travel the world. Anita and Selma spent many hours in the small conference room writing and organizing and checking and rechecking. And Anita even took care of all the requests for “special” seating. Couldn’t have done it without y’all! I’m grateful to Valerie Hyman who meticulously and successfully wrote an amazing grant application to the Department of Homeland Security. Thanks to her understanding of what was required and her ability to put it on paper, CBI has been granted $75,000 to enhance our security systems. We’re close to the starting point and, when the DHS says “go,” we’ll have 18 months to complete the work. We’ll be busy in the months ahead, and it’s all thanks to Valerie’s skill and tenacity. I’m ever grateful to Alice Ettinger for her vision and wisdom. And I’m grateful to the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees, all of whom have been open to the notion that challenges are simply pathways to opportunity. I’m grateful to be here at CBI in St. Pete, and thank you for allowing me to serve as your executive director. B’Shalom and Happy Thanksgiving,

USY Highlights Shalom Chaverim! For those of you who were unable to attend Selichot services, I would like to share with you my installation speech for our USY Board Members. I am Bianca Levi, the new CBI Youth Advisor. With my position I have the honor of installing our USY officers for the 2014-2015 year. Shoshana LeVine. One of the last times I saw you, you were a little girl playing at the former day school. Now you have blossomed into a beautiful young lady with a great dedication for your friends and USY. As historian, you will have plenty of opportunity to let your artistic abilities to shine. Robert Carroll. You are such a kind and intelligent young man. SPUSY will be very lucky to have you as a Membership and Kadima Vice President. This position is vital to our group as we hope to grow and flourish. Tori Bishoff. Your new title as Social Action and Tikkun Olam Vice President suits you quite well. You have a heartwarming dedication to our religion and USY will be a great place for you to continue to establish your leadership. Ari Zimmer. Your roots in Judaism are evidently steadfast. You can lead any service, quite eloquently may I add, with the charisma of an angel. We appreciate the knowledge that you already bring to our chapter and for all to come as Israeli Affairs and Religious Education Vice President. Lauren Klein. Programming Vice President is a large responsibility. The position is key to bringing our chapter together and engaging our members. You already have great plans for us and we cannot contain our excitement. I wish you luck and we are all glad for you to be a part of our chapter this year. Hannah Weiss. You have great experience to contribute to our chapter this year. As Communications Vice President you know who you need to engage and the best way to do so. As previous Chapter President you have much to add. We love having you involved. I already know you're a vital part of SPUSY and I thank you for your commitment. Hannah, you are such a lovely young lady to be around. You have a great personality with a devotion to USY like no other. Our chapter is lucky to have a President like you. I look forward to working with and mentoring you this year. It is with great excitement and honor, I install each of you into your new positions. Now that our freshman members have been inducted as well (on October 18) into SPUSY, there will be lots to come from this fantastic chapter. Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center -PRECEC Can you believe that fall is already here? After ringing in the new year with our construction paper Shofars and decorating our Sukkah with paper plate fruits and vegetables, the students of Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center are switching gears to give thanks for the veterans that have defended our country. Mid-November, students and staff will be taking a walking tour over to Menorah Manor to join residents in celebrating Veteran’s Day. Residents will read to the students; together they will sing patriotic songs, decorate flags, and indulge in a red, white, and blue fruit salad (strawberries, bananas, and blueberries)! Children are also spending time this month reflecting on all the things they are thankful for during the Thanksgiving Season. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we will host our annual Thanksgiving Feast during school hours. The children will prepare their own cranberries, stuffing, and green beans and then share their meal together. Enjoying a meal together as our preschool family provides our students with the opportunity to enjoy and grow together. As the saying goes, “Memories are made when gathered around the table.” This month is also our Dreidel Drawing along with the Craft and Gift Show on Sunday, November 16. This is Pauline Rivkind’s biggest fundraiser of the year and we appreciate any and all support. Families will be selling raffle tickets for donated items in order to raise funds for our educational program. More community-based programs especially that involve other synagogues – the Temple specifically was cited. As part of our outreach, mazel tov to Janice and David LeVine on the Federation’s Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service. Leadership and communication: we are making changes already. I will be making a monthly “State of CBI” for a minute from the bimah during announcements and in the Newsletter. The Trustees and I want to let you know what is going on behind the scenes. This is not a secret society. If so, they haven’t shown me the secret handshake. There is one caveat: we are not able to disclose employment issues. Volunteerism: We have passionate volunteers. It seems that many more of you would like to volunteer, but would like to be asked. Well I am asking. I am asking for anyone who would like to volunteer, there are myriad opportunities. Just give a call and we will help you volunteer. What is the Board working on? Thanks to Valerie Hyman and Susan Goldstein, we received a $75,000 Homeland Security grant for updates to our security. We have begun to replace the carpeting around the building. We have updated and developed several policies and procedures. We have availed ourselves of consultation services provided by United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism (USCJ). These and other services are provided by USCJ as part of the dues we pay. We are looking for health insurance coverage for our employees based on the newest guidelines and what is financially appropriate for CBI. We have appointed a committee to determine an appropriate model for education for all of CBI. Right after the holidays, they will begin their work. We have revamped the curricula for the Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah under the direction of 3rd VP, Ricki Lewis with the help of Pam Himmel, Cantor Schultz, Jacqui Wertel, Jason McMahon, and Sherri Carroll. We have installed TVs and iPads in each classroom for use by our religious school kids and Hebrew High to work with the new curriculum both at school and at home. We also have some new teachers who are using their creativity to interest and encourage our students. We welcome them all. I’m sure you have seen the New Year’s pictures in the papers and You Tube videos. If you have not, look on our website to catch a glimpse of all the fun. And I hope you will enjoy the Psalm Booklet you took at the front door. Our Hebrew High students wrote them under the direction of Janice LeVine and Amy Piper, and I am so proud of them. Our Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center, known as the preschool, is enjoying many new students and new teachers as well. Interim Director, Katie Schaefer is working to encourage Jewish learning and values with the help of Ricki Lewis, as well as including more of the fine education that it has always been known for. Tomorrow morning say “Hi” to the people who are at the help desk – they are some of the teachers. We have a new grounds company and we should be seeing some changes soon. We also have improved the air conditioning and thermostats. I have already appreciated that change. Now what you all have been waiting for, let me say something about the Kol Nidre Appeal. We have suggested that every family unit make an $18 increase over last year Kol Nidre pledge. That would give CBI $6000 more with which to carry out our business. You replied by doing so in many cases. We have about 125 families that total over $100,000 so far. If you have never given before or not in a long while, please consider giving a donation of chai - $18 or any amount would be gratefully accepted. You were given envelopes when you walked in and we will be happy to have the ushers collect them in a few moments. Lastly, I want to welcome the children who have been born here and who are already members through their parents. That is the most exciting thing we can have. Welcome Emma Isabella Gross, Noah Elias Wein, Simon Henry Strait, Ariellah Rio Shenofsky, Ethan Arnold Benstock, and Isaiah Aaron Bloom. Look for them tomorrow in the atrium and around the sanctuary. Welcome to them and to their parents. They are our future. And to all of you who have had grandchildren and great grandchildren, mazel tov. We look forward to having them visit many times. The children are a very important reason why we need to give as much as we can to the Kol Nidre appeal. That brings me to the end where I say thank you to all of the people in the office, the volunteers, the Board, my friends, my St. Petersburg family, and my husband, Larry for all of your help and support. In my first Bulletin article I alluded to the topic of “Jewish Stereotypes.” In March 2012 the ADL publish a report called, “Attitudes Toward Jews In Ten European Countries.” The research focused on the attitudes of the general public in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. A total of 5,000 telephone interviews were performed -- 500 in each of the ten countries -- between January 2 –January 31,2012. Respondents across the continent were asked whether or not they thought the following five statements were “probably true” or “probably false.” 1) Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country. 55% believe that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to their own country. 2) Jews have too much power in the business world. 36% of all respondents continue to believe in the traditional anti-Jewish canard that , “Jews have too much power in the business world.” 3) Jews have too much power in international financial markets. 39% of those surveyed cling to the traditional stereotype that Jews exert too much influence over international financial markets. 4) Jews still talk too much about what happened to them in the Holocaust. 41% of those surveyed believe it is “probably true” that Jews still talk too much about the Holocaust. 5) Whether they agree or disagree with the statement that “Jews are responsible for the death of Christ.” 22% agree with the statement , “Jews are responsible for the death of Christ.” Of Polish respondents, 46% agree with this statement -- the highest percentage among all of the countries surveyed. On September 24, 2014, Abraham Foxman, National Director ADL stated, “Although factors vary depending on the country, over all, the survey findings provide an important backdrop for what is now happening in Western Europe. It is clear that attitudes do play a role in fostering this pernicious form of hatred, which has had remarkable staying power through the ages and so far no clear antidote.” Leslie Pearlstein, MD

Kol Nidre Kol Nidre Campaign There are so many people to thank for helping the Kol Nidre campaign happen this year. First of all, to Thelma and Jerry Gilbert, the honorary co-chairs, who have shown their lifelong commitment to CBI. Secondly, the campaign could not happen without the CBI office staff, especially, Susan, Melissa and Pam as well as Kesef accounting services, the company who does our bookkeeping. You received your Kol Nidre letters and cards on Erev Kol Nidre due to the the help of the following volunteers: Sandy & Mike Slomka, Ina Sheppard, Susie van Gelder, Anita Helfand, Reva Pearlstein, Sheryl Feinman, Jackie Wertel and Ricki Lewis, CBI’s fund raising VP who supported this effort form start to finish. An additional Todah Rabah goes to Jackie Wertel for preparing our Kol Nidre honor roll board. Todah Rabah to Alice Ettinger for delivering the Kol Nidre appeal this year with a change from many of our past appeals. Other committee members who helped when needed are Amy Giskin, Gail Frye and Pam LeCompte. Most importantly, Todah Rabah to YOU, our CBI members without whom this campaign cannot succeed. Todah Rabah to the 25+ of you who gave gifts this year either for the first time or first in a few years. Todah Rabah to the many of you who took the "chai" challenge and increased your gift by at least $18. That collective increase makes CBI stronger. As of October 5, we had 167 families participating. Become a Minyanaire! We need at least ten Jews for public worship. Join with your CBI Family for the joy of davening and to support those in mourning, and join a close knit group of Minyanaires!

Help in the CBI Office! Join our fun and welcoming CBI Staff for a few hours and help them send out mailings, filing, or organizing to keep this ship smooth-sailing!

Become a greeter! Be the first to wish members of your CBI Family a “Shabbat Shalom” at Friday evening, or Saturday morning Shabbat Services. If you would like to take part in this tradition, contact Selma Gaby at 727.345.2887

Read Torah! We have a wonderful teacher who can help you prepare for this honor. Liz Sembler, our Engagement Director, is always available to help you learn to chant Torah and Haftorah portions. Mazal Tov BAR MITZVAH: Drs. Leslie and Mitchell Weiss on the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Ari Weiss
Ari Weiss will be called to the Torah in honor of his Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Ari is in the 7th grade at Shorecrest Preparatory School. Previously, he attended Pinellas County Jewish Day School. He enjoys playing guitar, tennis, singing and has spent the last four summers at Camp Ramah Darom.
