Participate in Aliyot The Ritual Committee of Congregation B’nai Israel encourages worshippers to participate in services by performing aliyot. If you like to receive an aliyah , please call the synagogue office at 727.381.4900, or speak to one of the ushers when you enter the sanctuary, and every effort will be made to accommodate your request. Those wishing to receive an aliyah on Shabbat morning are asked to arrive at services no later than 9:30 am. We look forward to your participation.

1 8 oz. package noodles, cooked
5 eggs
1 lb. cottage cheese
1/2—1 cup raisins
8 oz. package cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1 cup sour cream
6 tbs melted butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put all ingredients except noodles, raisins and melted butter in blender. Grease 9’ x 13’ pan. Put noodles and raisins in pan. Pour liquid over noodles then mix. Top with melted butter. Bake 1 1/2 hours. May be served hot or cold.

Bereavement Group Gulf Coast JFS is offering a Bereavement Support Group beginning Thursday, February 13, 2014, through March 13, 2014. This will be held each Thursday at their ICOT facility, Conference Room B, from 10:30AM to noon. We will be using the book “ Living With Loss, Healing With Hope” by Rabbi Earl Grollman. A new phrase sweeping our American Jewish community is “Big Tent Judaism.” The term suggests that institutions including Synagogues, must be as creative and proactive as possible in reaching out to the broad spectrum of Jews who are currently on the margins. The premise of “Big Tent Judaism” is correct. The conventional nuclear Jewish family as it may have existed in previous generations represents an ever shrinking minority in our contemporary American Jewish landscape. We are increasingly diverse – single, married, gay, interfaith, interracial, with children, without children, young and old – the variations are many and complex. The challenge transcending all the diversity is how long established institutions, especially Synagogues, can become broader, more inclusive and more welcoming. Both in our own self-perception and in our response to the fast changing needs of the Jewish community, CBI must embrace the “Big Tent” philosophy as a key route into the future. The “Big Tent” is a metaphor which is particularly appropriate in our Jewish tradition. Thousands of years ago, the rabbis in the Midrash wrote that Abraham and Sarah, the first Jews and founders of our people, kept their tent in the wilderness open on all sides, so that their home would be seen as accessible and hospitable to anyone who passed by. In similar fashion, when a couple marries, the Huppa, the canopy under which they stand at the wedding, is intentionally fashioned without walls, signifying that the home which they are forming together would be warm and welcoming to others. Our Synagogue is our collective spiritual home and should therefore reflect those same goals and values. What can you do in helping to promote the sense of “Big Tent Judaism” here at CBI? I suggest several strategies for your consideration. 1.
Every member of CBI is in the ideal position to tell others in our greater St. Petersburg community that within the broad parameters of Conservative Judaism, our CBI family affirms diversity.
2.
Our CBI programs are a testament to our recognition that “one size cannot fit all.” Please communicate to others that our Synagogue provides many meaningful and enjoyable avenues for Jewish identity.
3.
We all need to remember that historically, CBI has always been a regional congregation, drawing from many geographical areas of Tampa Bay. Please encourage interest from potential members from the entire Tampa Bay area.
4.
Please also help dispel the impression that by definition a Synagogue is impersonal and anonymous. The reality is that CBI has many internal “sub-communities,” and it is relatively and surprisingly easy to find a niche in at least one of them.
Every member of CBI is an ambassador to others in our community. Please help us in conveying the message that the flaps at CBI are wide open, and that “Big Tent Judaism” is indeed a proper description for our Synagogue Family. Shalom,
From the Cantor At the time of this writing, my parents are down here visiting me. The fourth day after they arrived was my paternal grandfather’s yahrzeit. My father came to my home to light a yahrzeit candle. He lit the candle, and, not knowing what to say, gave a salute. He then said that he wished he knew of a prayer or reading to recite when lighting a yahrzeit candle, he wasn’t aware of any in our siddurim. I have just come across such a prayer in going through some of my notes from seminary. This prayer comes courtesy of my colleague Hazzan Jeffrey Shiovitz. He, like my father, had not known what to say before he wrote this prayer, and I hope this might make your lighting of the candle more meaningful to you, too. Yahrzeit Prayer At this moment, in memory of our beloved __________, let us join hands in love and remembrance. A link has been broken in the chain which has bound us together, yet strong bonds of family and love hold us to each other. We give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship and of memory. We are grateful for the strength and faith that have sustained us in the hour of our bereavement. Though sorrow lingers, we have learned that love is stronger than death. Though our loved one is beyond our sight, we do not despair, for we sense our beloved in our hearts as a living presence. Sustained by words of faith, comforted by precious memories, we kindle the Yahrzeit light in remembrance. “The human spirit is the light of the Lord.” As this light burns pure and clear, so may the memory of the goodness and nobility of our dear __________ illumine our souls. (The light is kindled) Zich-ro-no(a) liv’racha May his/her memory be for a blessing.

I recently heard Susan Goldstein talking to some congregants about CBI. She was so complimentary of the number of CBI members who volunteer. She was especially complimentary of the lay lead minyan and the Women’s League who bake homemade sweets for us and provide food and woman power for Kiddush on Friday Evenings and our Oneg Shabbat on Saturday following services. In the previous Kehillot where she has worked, the volunteer power to make these things happen did not come close to matching ours. If you are one of the people who give of your time and talents to make these things happen at CBI- please pat yourself on the back. In addition to these 2 specific projects, there are many others who give of the their time and talents to make CBI successful such as the members of the Board of Trustees, committee chairs and committee members, office volunteers, dedicated parents of our preschool, Talmud Torah and youth group children, as well as members who teach classes so we can always have opportunities to learn, we are after all The People of the Book. If you are already doing one of the above mentioned activities or any other (and there are many I have not specifically listed) as a volunteer at CBI, I thank you on behalf of your fellow members. If you have felt underappreciated in any way, let me assure you that you were not. Perhaps in our busy day to day leading and running of CBI, we have not thanked you, so consider yourself thanked. CBI would not be the place it is without you!!! For each of you who find pleasure in volunteering your time and talents, this year, see if you can add the Side by Side at CBI concept and invite a friend to join you. From the Executive Director I Can, 1 Can Let’s “do” Mitzvah Month at CBI! In addition to the opportunities to participate in Crop Walk and serve lunch and/or dinner at St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, we can do three things this month right here at our CBI home: watch a movie; help replenish non-perishable food items at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services (“GCJFS”); and write a check to Mazon! On Saturday evening, February 8, join our USY-ers for a viewing of the documentary, “A Place at the Table,” that describes the very real problem of hunger in America. Write a check or donate online at mazon.org, and make a difference. Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger is an organization that (a) provides for people who are hungry and advocates for other ways to end hunger and its causes; (b) educates and raises the consciousness of the Jewish community regarding its obligation to alleviate hunger and its causes; and (c) promotes making donating a portion of the cost of life cycle events (historically, at least 3%) to MAZON a permanent tradition in Jewish life. When you visit the website, check out some of the great links to information about hunger in America, references to verses in the Torah that refer to hunger, and the halachic foundation of Jews caring for the hungry. Yes, hunger is even a problem in the Jewish community right here in St. Pete/Pinellas County. We can make a difference on a local level by making sure that the food bank at GCJFS is well stocked. When you come to the shul for an adult education class, to pick up your child at preschool or PRTT, to volunteer, to daven at week-day minyan, or any reason whatsoever (except on Shabbat), bring a can of food to be donated to GCJFS. In February, we’re saying “I CAN bring 1 CAN every time I come to CBI (except on Shabbat).” If we all join in, together we can repress hunger. Let’s do it! B’Shalom,

Several “Good News” Stories … Tourism in Israel is Up (eTurboNews) During 2013, 12.6 million passengers travelled to and from Israel on 90,000 international flights, up 8% from 2012. El Al Israel Airlines easily maintained its lead as the top airline carrying passengers to and from Israel, and increased the number of people flying on its planes. El Al flew 4 million passengers. In second place was Turkish Airlines, with six daily flights from Ben Gurion Airport. It carried 562,000 passengers. In third place was Arkia Airlines Ltd; in fourth place was Lufthansa; and in fifth place was United. Then came, Ukraine Air, Air France, Alitalia, easyJet, and Pegasus. The next ten carriers were: Aegean Air, British Airways, Swiss, Aeroflot, Israir Airlines and Tourism Ltd, Delta, Transaero, Austrian Airlines, Air Berlin, and US Airways. Rain in Israel (Ha’aretz) After two years of relatively heavy rainfall, during 2014, the Israel government will be reducing the amount of water it buys from the country's four desalination plants by 30%. Four big desalination plants will operate at only 70% capacity this year and expansion plans will be frozen. "The decision on reducing desalinized water purchases at this time was made possible due to a considerable improvement in natural water sources and a wide range of additional sources (such as treated wastewater and brackish water) that ensure the stable and integrative management of all water sources in the country," the Israel Water Authority said. While a fifth desalinization plant is under construction, further plans to expand desalination capacity have been put on hold. Jewish Immigration to Israel (Jerusalem Post) According to figures released by the Jewish Agency and the Immigrant Absorption Ministry, 19,200 Jews immigrated to Israel in 2013, a rise of 260 from the previous year. 7,520 immigrants came from the former Soviet Union, 3,000 from North America, and 1,240 from Latin America. 3,120 French Jews moved to Israel (up from 1,916 in 2012!). 510 immigrants came from the UK, 265 from New Zealand and Australia, 160 from Hungary, and 74 from Turkey. How do you raise a Happy and Healthy Child?

I recently read an article by Arthur Rosen discussing “Five Secrets for Raising Healthy and Happy Children.” In the next several months my articles will be discussing this topic.
The students of Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah are beginning the new semester with renewed enthusiasm to learn Hebrew following the tremendous success of their performances in, “The Village of Chelm.” In January, PRTT’s annual Tu B’Shvat Seder was a great success. The children learned about the “Birthday of Trees” and gained an understanding that Jewish people were concerned about the earth thousands of years before the environmental movement. The students enjoyed the speaker from JNF who explained about how important it is for everyone to participate in saving trees—and about The Parkland Project which is committed to planting 5,000 trees in Eretz Yisrael.
Every parent wants their child to be happy and healthy. Every parent also asks themselves how to guide their child through this journey, often questioning whether or not their way is the best way. The simple answer is that there is no best way, just your best way. Here are five concepts for you to think about.
The new semester will expand on the foundation that the teachers have developed in making it fun to learn Hebrew and Jewish studies.
Understand your role as the Parent. The Hebrew work for parent is horim. This word is almost the same as harim which means raising up. These words are related because a parent must raise his child from being dependent on the parent to becoming a fully independent adult. Educate your child to be able to get through the difficulties of life without incurring personal physical, emotional or mental damage. Take time to understand your child’s capabilities, potential and his ability to fit his unique personality into the world.

Look at each of your children as individuals. What is good for one may not be the best for another. What is love? Love between a parent and child is different than what we conjure up when we first think of the word. We look at our children and usually feel a sense of warmth and happiness. But love for a child also means concern about the welfare of the child and sometimes this may not look or feel like love.
Do you have a college student in the family? CBI wants to stay connected. We need your help.
The definition of discipline is to teach. Discipline does not need to be harsh or harmful. It is important to teach your child limits and how to be safe from harmful situations, both emotional and physical. Children need to know that the family has rules. Rules that are spelled out so that the child understands them will help the child feel safe because he knows what is expected of him. This will lead to a happy child.

We are so proud! CBI women were honored as Women of Distinction. Mazal Tov to each of you. We know what fabulous women we have here and it is always a pleasure to see them recognized by their peers throughout the community. Women’s League of Congregation B’nai Israel was proud to nominate Jennifer Sternberg as our Woman of Distinction. Jennifer is a long-standing member of CBI and has been involved so many projects that she had a hard time remembering everything. She is the Special Projects Chair for Women’s League, her organizational skills enable her to plan and implement special events and projects for our membership, including Torah Fund in many roles, helping with catering and decorating for events, As Chair of CBI Simcha Torah Celebration - Hatanei Hatorah for many years, Jennifer displays her ability to organize and coordinate with many people. She has chaired CBI Women's League Torah Fund Dinner and has sold Torah Fund cards. As Chairperson for several fashion show events for CBI Women's League, she shows her leadership qualities and special talent for artistic projects. We are very pleased and proud of the many accomplishments of Jennifer Sternberg for Congregation B'nai Israel of St Petersburg and for her many years of dedicated service to Women's League of CBI.
