I also appreciate your support of the Chicken For Shabbat program. This program is a companion to the food pantry to provide families with the ability to purchase perishable food and celebrate family meals together. Todah Rabah!
One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim –visiting the sick. It is the responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4900, x 203, so that as clergy and the synagogue family we can be helpful in moments of difficult or stress.

In the spirit of gift giving that has become a part of the ritual of our celebration of this festival of lights, I offer you eight gifts that do not cost a cent that I hope you will share freely with all who are privileged to be a part of your lives. This simple checklist can help measure how you are nurturing your relationships. The author of these thoughts is unknown but deeply appreciated. The Gift of Listening But you must really listen. Don't interrupt, don't daydream, don't plan your response. Just listen. The Gift of Affection Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends. The Gift of Laughter Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, "I love to laugh with you." The Gift of Solitude There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others. The Gift of a Favor Every day go out of your way to do something kind. The Gift of a Written Note It can be a simple "Thanks for the help" note or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime. The Gift of a Compliment A simple and sincere, "You look great in red," "You did a super job," or "That was a wonderful meal" can make someone's day. The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone. These are eight important ways we can contribute toward whole and healthy relationships. They cost nothing, yet they may well be the most valuable gifts we can ever offer another. With best wishes for a Hanukkah Sameah!
From the Cantor Now that we have just completed a month with no Jewish holidays, we are approaching the winter highlight, Hanukkah. As we do every year, we will once again hold our annual CBI Hanukkah Celebration, which will be on Wednesday night, December 17. Come join us for an evening of fun, latkes, and a Hanukkah sing-a-long led by Yours Truly, with a little help from some friends. Here’s an interesting tidbit about Hanukkah that you might not have known: the very first Hanukkah celebration was essentially a celebration of Sukkot two months late. By way of background, we know from I Kings 8:2 that King Solomon dedicated the First Temple during the Festival of Sukkot. Why do that during Sukkot? Because it was the major pilgrimage festival, and everyone was going to be there. We therefore have a record of King Solomon presiding over an eight-day Dedication of the Temple, during the eight days of Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret. Now, fast forward several centuries. The Maccabees have defeated the Syrian-Greeks, they’ve rebuilt and cleaned up the Second Temple, and they want to dedicate the new Temple. How do you do a dedication ceremony? They looked in their holy scriptures, and lo and behold, they found a blueprint for a Temple dedication ceremony in the book of I Kings! We also find a direct reference to the Hanukkah-Sukkot connection in II Maccabees 1:9, in a letter sent from the Hasmoneans to the leaders of Egyptian Jewry: “And now see that you keep the feast of booths in the month of Kislev, in the one hundred and eighty-eighth year [of the Seleucid era, 124/123 BCE].” Several decades earlier, in 164 BCE, the Hasmoneans were holed up in caves fighting the Syrian-Greeks in Tishrei, and they therefore had to postpone the celebration of Sukkot until after they recaptured Jerusalem and purified the Temple (I Maccabees 4:36-59). This connection between Hanukkah and Sukkot may also explain why we recite full Hallel on every day of Hanukkah, because full Hallel is recited on every day of Sukkot. Happy Hanukkah!

Gift giving is a tradition during Chanukah in many families. What kinds of gifts do we give? How do we commemorate Chanukah in our personal and community lives? We can contribute to the Jewish community in many ways, with the gift of time. Here at CBI we have many opportunities to support our CBI family and give of ourselves. There is volunteering in the office, attending minyan, coming to services, offering to drive someone to CBI for the Chanukah celebration, or just making a phone call to say “Hi” to someone you have not seen in a while or who is unable to get out. And in our Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center and Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah, we sometimes need someone to help read a story, help get snacks, or just help take a student to the bathroom. Some of these things sound mundane, as if you are not really doing something meaningful, but often that can make a big difference. So as you light the candles, think how you can give the gift of giving by volunteering. It will make others happy, and give you a gift of feeling good as well. The ultimate gift is enabling others to give. It has been noted that some families began a tradition in their home - giving each of their children an $18 check on the last night of Chanukah, payable to whatever charity the children selected. This Chanukah, teach others about the importance of sharing yourself, your time, and your resources with those around you. This is the time to search within ourselves for our real priorities. From the Executive Director I attended a NAASE (North American Association of Synagogue Executives) Board of Governors meeting in Rockville, Maryland, November 2 and 3. The agenda was full, and we had some very meaningful discussions. There are some issues that we agreed were important to share with our members; two of them are MERCAZ and Hillel. MERCAZ is the Zionist arm of the Conservative movement, and represents Conservative Judaism in the World Zionist Organization (WZO), the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), and the Jewish National Fund-KKL. As the official lobby of Conservative/Masorti Judaism in these world Jewish institutions, MERCAZ brings more than $2.5 million in benefits each year to Masorti institutions (e.g., Conservative kehillot) in Israel and around the world. Why does this matter to us here in St. Petersburg, Florida? It matters if we care about the future of Conservative institutions in Israel. Remember that The Conservative/Masorti movement does not receive financial support from the State of Israel. Funding from the WZO and JAFI allows Conservative/Masorti ideology -- pluralism, feminism, commitment to Jewish values, Tradition & Change – to exist in Israel. The benefits we receive are accrued as a direct result of the size of our delegation to the Zionist Congress. The next Zionist Congress will be held in October 2015, but the composition of the US delegation (145) will be determined during the first quarter of 2015. So, if we think it’s important, what can we do to support Conservative/Masorti Judaism? · Visit mercazusa.org and learn more about MERCAZ. · Join MERCAZ USA. The cost is minimal: $36 per individual or $54 per household. You may pay through CBI (one of the voluntary items on your monthly invoice) or pay online at mercazusa.org. · Vote to send MERCAZ delegates to the WZO. Print and electronic mailings will be coming your way soon. Our guest speaker was Eric Fingerhut, President and CEO of Hillel International, who spoke about the importance of developing relationships between our kehillot and Hillel. · He pointed out that an attribute that most Jews share is an awareness of the importance of education illustrated by the fact that over 85% of Jewish kids in America are in four-year colleges and universities. · Hillel is one of the largest providers of funds for Birthright trips. · Hillel developed a new database into which we can place the names of our students so that Hillel directors can reach out to them. Eric will share that information with us in the near future. What a great tool! · Eric noted that first-year college students are faced with many new experiences, and he underscored the importance of creating safe places for our students when they come home. I’d also like to share with you some of the things I’m doing to enhance my professional growth with a view to becoming a better executive director · I served as co-editor of the NAASE Journal that should be in print by the time you read this. The Journal includes some insightful articles relating to the changes that are taking place in all our kehillot. We anticipate that our next edition will be a joint effort with our Reform colleagues in NATA (National Association of Temple Administrators). · I will serve as chair of the JTS Week of Study in June 2015. I will be working with Rabbi Julie Andelman, JTS Director of Community Engagement, to identify our scholar-in-residence and topic. There are SO many exciting possibilities!! And on the home front, by the time we go to print, our new telecommunications system should just about be in place thanks to the generosity and vision of Kathleen and Fred Buns who allowed us to tap into the Buns Technology Improvement Fund. They also authorized use of the Fund to put TVs and ipads in our PRTT classrooms, thus enriching our childrens’ learning experience. Todah Rabah, Kathleen and Fred! Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center -PRECEC As we wrap up the Fall Semester of our school year, it is incredible to look back on all that the preschool has accomplished in a few short months! With our extremely successful Dreidel Drawing Fundraiser, unfolding our plans of including an Infant Classroom (ages 2 months to 12 months), in our growing school set to open February 2015, and the awesome recognition our VPK Programming has received from the Early Learning Coalition, Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center is ready for another incredible upcoming semester! The entire staff of PRECEC would like to extend a warm and gracious “Thank You” to everyone who has shown their love and support in the surrounding community! A-Team: CBI’s Advocacy for Israel Committee

Lord Sacks, the emeritus chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth, recently published (Wall Street Journal, Oct. 2 ) his thoughts on Europe’s new anti-Semitism. He feels that some of what we are seeing in Europe is the old anti-Semitism of the far right and the radical left, which never went away and merely lay dormant during the years when attacks on Jews were considered unacceptable in polite society. That taboo is now well and truly broken. The assault on Israel and Jews worldwide is part of a larger pattern that includes attacks on Christians and other minority faiths in the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia—a religious equivalent of ethnic cleansing. Ultimately, this campaign amounts to an attack on Western democratic freedoms as a whole. If not halted now, it will be Europe itself that will be pushed back toward the Dark Ages. Anti-Semitism has always been, historically, the inability to make space for differences among people, which is the essential foundation of a free society. That is why the politics of hate now assaults Christians, Bahai, Yazidis, as well as Jews. To fight it, we must stand together, people of all faiths and of none. Rabbi Sacks states, “The future of freedom is at stake, and it will be the defining battle of the 21st century.” Leslie Pearlstein, MD
Mitzvah Men’s Club Hanukkah is rapidly approaching, and it’s hard to believe that not long ago, we were assembling the Sukkah! For that (in addition to taking it down), I want to thank all of the hard working volunteers who showed up on those weekends as well as our volunteers and participants for the Suds In The Sukkah meal. Coming up, the MMC will host the Mort Sherman Watch Party on December 14 in the Benjamin Social Hall at CBI. We will be watching the Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. NEW TIKVAH PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER Summer 2015 Dr. Audra Kaplan will join the staff to offer a four-week summer experience for children 12-17 years old diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder ASD. This Tikvah Program will be the first program in the Southeast focused on providing a traditional, immersive, Jewish summer camping experience to Jewish teenagers with ASD. The program will be fully integrated into a community that is steeped in Jewish celebration, learning, and ritual. Jewish Journeys Anita Helfand……. I grew up in Brooklyn, D.C. and Hyattsville, Maryland. My mother, who was a terrific cook, kept kosher and was very much into Judaism. My grandfather, who lived with us, maintained Shabbat. As a teenager, I joined a Jewish sorority and enjoyed going to services with my girlfriends. Years later, after I married my wonderful husband, Arlen, we moved to Rockville Maryland. I was very eager to make friends and decided to join Sisterhood. I was pregnant with my son, Norman, and quickly bonded with the other women, many of whom were just like me, starting young families. Soon, I was invited to join Sisterhood’s Bar Mitzvah catering committee. My children, Norman and Lorri, attended Hebrew school. I took Hebrew and adult education classes. As we planned a move to St. Petersburg in 1974, my husband got to town ahead of us and contacted B’nai Israel so my son Norman could prep for his Bar Mitzvah and both of our children could continue their Jewish education. After we moved to St. Pete, my desire to make friends led me to become involved in Synagogue activities again. It didn’t take long. In 1975, Dottie Goldblatt contacted me and asked me to take on Torah Fund vice president. I had served as Sisterhood president in Maryland and eventually took on the role here. Over the years, I became active and held offices in many other organizations, including Florida Region of Women’s League, Brandeis Women, Hadassah and Menorah Manor Guild. My hardworking husband was active in the Men’s Club and served on the Youth Commission. I continued my Jewish education and joined a class with six other women from B’nai Israel. We nicknamed ourselves the Magnificent 7 and we all celebrated our B’not Mitzvah in April of 1981. I became involved in Sisterhood catering with my good friend, Jean Kraff, and I ran the Sisterhood Judaica shop with another dear friend, Ellen Bernstein. Arlen and I were involved in several Jewish social groups and joined a fun-loving Friday Night Havurah for about 20 years. Years later, we joined another wonderful Havurah that I am still a member of. In 1984, I began work as school secretary for Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah. About a decade later, I was offered a position in the synagogue office, where I continued to work until my retirement in 2013, shortly after my loving husband Arlen passed away. My Jewish journey continues. I recently joined B’nai’s Board of Trustees and still help out in the gift shop and stay active in the synagogue, working on the Book of Remembrance, New Year Greeting and High Holiday tickets.

The CBI Sisterhood has a long and proud history. In keeping with national policy in the Conservative Movement, we are now known as Women's League. The original name is still comfort able for many folks, and by any name, we are serving the congregation in traditional and updated ways. Join us, come to a meeting, and engage head, hands and heart in a sisterhood project! When you walk into the CBI lobby, look in all the windows and then visit the Judaica Shop! Hours are posted, with specials for this Hanukkah season. Come to enjoy this part of our synagogue, side by side with new members and long-standing leaders. Mark your calendars for Women's League Shabbat, January 16-17, 2015. Kabbalat Shabbat service will be at 6:00 pm, followed by a delicious Got Shabbat? Dinner catered by our own Dean Hershkowitz of Meze 119. Watch for the Shabbat dinner details so that you can RSVP in time and be a part of a very special, annual event. Saturday morning services (9:00 am) will be followed by a Kiddush lunch, prepared by Women's League. The Festival of Hanukkah ✡ The Festival of Hanukka begins on the eve of the 25th of Kislev, the day when the Maccabees cleansed and rededicated the Holy Temple, having vanquished Israel’s tyrannical oppressors. It is told that they found only one little cruse of pure, undefiled oil, but miraculously, it burned in the Temple menorah for 8 days, In commemoration, our Festival lasts 8 days, and every evening we kindle lights of oil or candles in a hanukkiah. One is lit the first night, two the second night, and so on, until 8 lights are kindled on the final evening. ✡ The Menorah’s light is holy and may not be used for any ordinary purposes, i.e., to read by. Therefore, an extra light, or candle—a shamash– is added every evening, so that if the light is inadvertently used, there will also be non-holy light.

The Order of Lighting The candles are placed from right to left, as one faces the Hanukkia, as Hebrew is read, but they are lit from left to right, so that on each night, the new candle is given special welcome by being lit first. Only the Shammash is used to light the other candles.

The candles should be lit as soon as possible once dark. On Friday night, however, the Hanukka candles are lit BEFORE the Shabbat candles. At the close of Shabbat, the Havdala ceremony precedes the lighting of the Hanukkia.

“ORCHESTRA OF EXILES� Written and directed by Josh Aronson with Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta, Joshua Bell and Pinchas Zukerman. Some stories get lost in the turmoil of their times. It is often only in retrospect that we can discover the true shapers of history. One such man is the prodigious Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman. Orchestra of Exiles explores this great man's 4-year odyssey, which culminates in the founding of the orchestra that would become the Israel Philharmonic. His fascinating story touches many of the major themes of the 20th century and the unfolding drama of his life is riveting. During the darkest days of a Europe being torn apart by anti-Semitism and Nazi aggression, Huberman's extraordinary efforts saved hundreds of Jewish families from the approaching holocaust and his achievements changed the landscape of cultural history. Before the Nazis came to power Huberman was focused only on building his own monumental career but witnessing Hitler's agenda was a call to action that Huberman could not ignore. Huberman's personal transformation and subsequent heroic struggle to get Jewish musicians out of Europe to found this orchestra will be at the heart of this film.
