Kehilla BIKKUR HOLIM One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim: visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious 2
about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4901 so that, as clergy and the synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

From the Rabbi Tradition insists that it was on Rosh Hodesh Elul that Moses re-ascended Mount Sinai to receive the second set of tablets. This ascent, like the one that preceded, was accompanied by the sound of the Shofar, hence the practice of sounding the Shofar during the month of Elul. The message is clear. The month of Elul and the High Holidays that follow offer us a second chance – or a third or a fourth – to return to God. During the past year, each of us has stumbled and sinned – not occasionally but often. We have slandered, we have deceived and we have closed our eyes to human suffering. We have absented ourselves from the Synagogue, we have allowed Shabbat to be transformed into an “ordinary” day and we have turned our back on much of the richness of our unique Tradition. The Shofar notes which we begin to sound on Sunday, September 4 at the conclusion of the weekday morning service, remind us that we can still ascend the Mountain. God continues to wait for us. It is God’s desire that we confront our moral and spiritual failings and express resolve to correct our behavior. The “second” chance is before us. While there is yet breath within us, God grants us the opportunity and the privilege of doing teshuva, of repenting, of turning towards Him. The Selihot service will be on Saturday night September 24. Let us gather as a community to begin the High Holiday season together. May our prayers this Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, together with the sounding of the Shofar, inspire us to examine our lives and to ascend to higher levels of spirituality and mitzvah. From the Cantor Last month, I started telling you about my trip to Spain with the Cantors Assembly, telling you about our first three days in Barcelona and surrounding areas. I will now continue with the next segment of the trip – Madrid. We began our visit to Madrid with a city tour by bus, visiting the Reina Sofia and the Prado art museums, as well as other major attractions in Madrid on Thursday and Friday. We were also treated to lectures by our Scholars in Residence, Professors Eliezer Papo and Stephen Berk. Professor Papo spoke about “Between Yishmael and Esau, the Jews of Spain and Tor ha-Zahav.” Professor Berk spoke about “The Rise and Fall of Spain,” focusing on Spanish history in the couple of centuries after 1492. On Thursday night, we were treated to a reception at Casa Sefarad, an institution that builds relations between Spain and Jews and the State of Israel. We then experienced Shabbat in Madrid. Spending Shabbat with about 50 or 60 fellow Hazzanim and roughly 300 of their congregants was truly a delight, as you may well imagine. We held a Kabbalat Shabbat service Friday night, led by approximately 15 of my colleagues. A recurring theme of our services was the use of music from Ruach HaDarom, a new Cantors Assembly publication that features music popular in Latin and South America and music written by its cantors and composers. I had the pleasure of participating in the Shabbat morning service, leading off with Shochen Ad through El Adon. On Sunday, we traveled to Toledo for the day, a community that was perhaps the center and peak of Jewish life in Sefarad during the 12th and 13th centuries, prior to the expulsion of the Jews. At one time, it may have had as many as 10 synagogues. Today, there are remnants of two: the Santa Maria de Blanco and the Transito. Of course, we visited both. The Transito synagogue also houses the Museo Sefardi, a museum of Jewish history in Toledo and artifacts from the area. On Sunday night, we closed out our visit to Madrid with a concert titled “A World of Jewish Music: Sephardic, Israeli, South and North American, Ashkenazic.” My favorite selection from this concert was “Hashem Melech,” a salsa-style musical setting of the words “Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch l’olam va-ed,” composed by Khaled and performed by Hazzan Marcelo Gindlin, who is originally from Argentina. From the President “If you will it, it is no dream,” by Theodor Herzl, is a beautiful Zionist quote which embodies the power of visioning to succeed immeasurable tasks. Midway into my 2-year term as president, I’m optimistic in our leadership’s ability to will a vision into reality. We have become a “welcoming synagogue” and open our doors to all Jews as family. I appreciate the leadership and staff throughout Congregation B’nai Israel and the Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center for accomplishing much in the way of visioning to actually live and breathe our strategic plan. You may have noticed a younger contingency among our board of trustees which is making us a more thought-provoking and optimistic leadership group. Please welcome our newest board member Hana Cowart, who takes an open one-year seat. Mrs. Cowart has been active in Hillel, YAD of Federation and is currently slated with her husband Lyle to represent young leaders on the Federation humanitarian visit to Cuba. She is mom to CBI preschooler Sarah who you may recall singing “put the chicken in the pot” during Zimrot at our “Got Shabbat?” Our upcoming “Got Shabbat?” dinner on September 16th will be our membership outreach and board of trustees installation dinner. Dinner promises to be extra delicious with homemade Chicken Pot Pie lovingly co-chaired by Sandy Brasch, Sheryl Sutton and team. CBI is such an extraordinary place! Where else can one go to experience the full gamut of Jewish experience, from the sadness of traditional Tisha B’Av services to the pure joy of a Disney themed Friday night Shabbat service? We offer so much to so many. As we begin the daily blowing of the shofar during the month of Elul in preparation for the High Holidays, let’s not forget all the wonderful things our shul has to offer. See you in Shul! From the Director of Lifelong Learning By now a number of important beginnings have come and gone for many of us: first day of school, first day of PRTT, dropping children off at college, and the beginning of a new calendar of synagogue activities. We’re beginning a new season of reflection: the month of Elul starts Saturday, September 3, at sundown. Every morning, except Shabbat, during the month of Elul we’ll hear the sound of the shofar. Each morning the sound of the blast is similar, but the meaning is deeply personal and awakens something different in each listener. Last year it represented for me a commitment to reduce regret in my life, to act on my good intentions as often as possible. This year during the month of Elul I am reflecting on intentionality and purpose. I’ll try to channel the words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel: “Be sure that every little deed counts, that every word has power, and that we do—everyone—our share to redeem the world, in spite of all the absurdities, and all the frustrations, and all the disappointment.” As a new member of the St Petersburg community, I’ve been following city council meetings about neighborhood development and news stories about the challenges of the school system. I read a recent letter to The Tampa Bay Times in which a parent writes about the positive effects that the warm, cheerful, and welcoming attitude of the school’s faculty had on parents and students the first day of school. In a similar vein, I invite you to look at a video produced by The Atlanta Speech School titled “Every Opportunity:” a look at a school day through the eyes of a child. We see both the positive power of words and deeds as well as the potential to undermine another’s confidence. We get a little more insight into the importance of intentionality: every greeting, gesture and look we exchange has meaning and power. The shofar’s call for me will be a reminder to invest my words and actions with purposeful power for good. B’Shalom, Maureen Sechan

Advocacy for Israel Israeli researcher findings may lead to cure for melanoma. In a landmark discovery, researchers at Tel Aviv University (TAU) have unraveled the metastatic mechanism of melanoma, the most aggressive of all skin cancers. According to a paper published in the journal Nature Cell Biology, the scientists discovered that before spreading to other organs, a melanoma tumor sends out tiny vesicles containing molecules of microRNA. These induce morphological changes in the dermis in preparation for receiving and transporting the cancer cells. The researchers also found chemical substances that can stop the process and are therefore promising drug candidates. "The threat of melanoma is not in the initial tumor that appears on the skin, but rather in its metastasis — in the tumor cells sent off to colonize in vital organs like the brain, lungs, liver and bones," said research leader Dr. Carmit Levy of the Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at TAU's Sackler School of Medicine. "We have discovered how the cancer spreads to distant organs and found ways to stop the process before the metastatic stage." The TAU group worked in close collaboration with Prof. JÜrg D. Hoheisel and Laureen Sander at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Dr. Shoshi Greenberger at the Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer, Israel and Dr. Ronen Brenner at the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, Israel. Lab research was led by Dr. Shani Dror of Dr. Levy's research group.

Women’s League We are happy to share some news from the Women's League planning board meeting on August 10th. As the cycle of holidays to begin our Jewish New Year approaches, we look forward to seeing and greeting one another with renewed good wishes and good intentions! Join us as we decorate the Sukka on Sunday morning, October 16 at 10:00 a.m. It is a mitzvah to take part in Morning Minyan first, a wonderful start to any day. Come at 9:00 a.m. for Minyan or 10:00 for a Sukka Shmooze with nosh, of course. Help hang the traditional harvest fruits. You are most welcome to BYOF -- Bring Your Own (artificial) Fruits -- and contribute new décor to our CBI Sukka!

Pokemon Icebreaker Welcome to youth group activities for the new year! It was a great event attended by the entire school— there were even some future PRTT students participating!—and hosted by some of our awesome USYers! Students moved throughout the building as they identified the different sacred texts in the Beit Midrash, the appropriate blessings to say as they snacked on a variety of foods in the Youth Lounge, located holiday symbols and the 12 tribes of Israel in the Windows of Wonder and in the stained glass in the Sanctuary. Back in the Youth Lounge the students played a game of “Shuv,” a variation of musical chairs. Each activity was followed by an attempt to capture a Pokemon to put in their Pokemon tin. At the end of the event, the students broke up into red and blue teams to find the rare character Kehillatron (“Kehilla” is Hebrew for community). They went into the courtyard armed with red and blue water balloons. They were surprised to find the yellow team waiting to ambush them! An epic battle ensued followed by popsicles. Kadima and our young youth groups will have events typically on Sundays or Wednesdays after PRTT. There may be a small fee charged for food or art supplies at events, and a calendar of events will be available soon on CBI’s website. There are also regional events planned for our youth groups to participate in events with the groups from the Conservative congregations of Tampa and Clearwater. Like USY, Kadima, for grades 6-8, is a youth group under the auspices of United Synagogue Youth and does require membership to attend regional events like conventions and Yom Disney (2/20/2017). HIGH HOLIDAYS SECURITY & DECORUM ✡ Each person, including children, seeking admittance to the Synagogue will be required to ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡ ✡
present a ticket to Security Personnel. Tickets are not transferrable. Please allow sufficient time for parking and getting to your seats. All are encouraged to bring their own kipot and talitot. Open Seating: Seats may be saved up until 9:30 am. Please respectfully follow the directions of our volunteer ushers. Please silence all electronic devices. Please note the listing of youth services and supervised activities provided for all children. By order of the Fire Department, the lobby, halls, and aisles must be kept clear at all times. A dignified atmosphere enhances the beauty of our High Holiday worship. Be friendly, greet and meet your fellow worshippers. Members are reminded to remain at the rear of the Sanctuary: when the Congregation is standing at prayer, when the Rabbi is speaking, and when the Cantor is chanting solo. Our volunteer ushers will signal appropriate entrance times for latecomers. Please cooperate with our ushers.
BRING YOUR OWN TALIT TO SERVICES All worshippers attending religious services in our Congregation are asked to bring their own talitot and kipot. High Holiday prayer books, as well as a good number of talitot, will be provided by the Congregation. Our Judaica Shop has a variety of talitot available for purchase. Ladies are encouraged to wear talitot and headcoverings when receiving an Aliyah or honor on the Bimah.
VOLUNTEER TO USHER Come to the aid of your Congregation and volunteer to be a High Holiday usher. We need your help! We will tailor the usher schedule to the hours you anticipate being in shul. For information, contact Eric Pastman at eric.pastman@gmail.com.
SEATING POLICY When seating and saving seats: We offer reserved seating for those with physical disabilities; e.g. those requiring wheelchairs, walkers, etc. Requests for handicapped seating should be made in advance through the office. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Spouses and relatives may save seats up until 9:30 am, after which ushers will ask for unoccupied saved seats to be released to others. Your tickets will be checked at the door prior to entering the synagogue. You must have a ticket to enter the building. This precaution is designed to protect you, not cause inconvenience. Tickets serve as our first line of security for the congregation.
