Our Mission Through our congregational life, our goal is to provide the opportunity for our members and friends to experience Jewish life to its fullest. We want to transmit the ideals of Conservative Judaism to our children and grandchildren, to enable them to be knowledgeable and responsible participants in Jewish life, sensitive and ethical human beings and reliable custodians of an enduring heritage. Through the synagogue, we want to find strength and inspiration in worship and study, in the sharing of life cycle events, in acts of caring, in reaching out to the wide Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and in concern and support for Israel.

Kehilla BIKKUR HOLIM: about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727-381-4901 so that, as clergy and synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

One of the most important Mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim, visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel takes very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality hospitals today are very cautious

From the Rabbi Rabbi Milton Steinberg made a point in one of his essays that to be a Jew in America was to have the advantage of being able to fully participate in two cultures and traditions. The month of November has no Jewish holidays, but it does contain Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and even that great civic experience Election Day. For the Jewish community, Thanksgiving Day resonates with Jewish values, even if the historical background is not from our own history. The obligation to cultivate a lively sense of appreciation for the manifold blessings a gracious God bestows on us runs like a golden thread throughout the fabric of our Jewish tradition. According to religious mandate we are obligated to recite “one hundred blessings” every day as we experience God’s bounty. So basic was this sense of appreciation that the Rabbis of old declared: “In time to come, all the offerings will be abolished except the thanks-offering; all the prayers will be abolished except the prayers of thanksgiving.” At first thought, it appears easy to cultivate the art of giving thanks. From our earliest days we are taught good manners, among them responding “thank you” to express our gratitude when someone else was nice to us. What would be more natural than extending this lesson into our adult life, and occasionally pausing to be grateful for the blessings of our lives and for life itself. And yet as we move from day to day, we cannot fail to note the difficulty that most of us have in feeling gratitude and expressing appreciation. There is a well known legend that underscores this tendency in human beings. Two angels were each given a basket and sent to earth to gather up the prayers that were being offered that day. One was to collect only petitions. The other was to gather up the prayers of thanksgiving. When they returned, the angel bearing the requests was carrying a basket filled to overflowing. The other angel was depressed for his basket was all but empty. There is no doubt that our gripes and grumblings are louder than our expressions of appreciation. We complain more often than we experience contentment. We are certainly more aware of what we lack and need, than our focus on what we have. Thanksgiving Day is a call to remedy this emotional imbalance in our perception of the world and our own lives. The meal, the sharing, that gathering together of family and friends can and must make us stand back and realize how grateful we should be for the people in our lives, the successes of our lives and for the simple fact that we are here to enjoy life. We also should appreciate how lucky we are to be here in America with its tradition of tolerance. There have been few countries in our history that could compare with the level of acceptance and encouragement that we as Jews have found on these shores. To be grateful does not mean to take for granted – just the opposite. From colonial days on, the Jewish community understood that it had to be resolute in defending American values and to participate in the “civic” process. We fought in the wars of America and as Jews were proud to be counted as veterans. Above everything, the early Jews in America understood that their right to vote and to hold public office was what made this country different for us. If you think about it, all three of the holidays of November have a common ground. Appreciate and participate – that is what it is all about! Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

From the Cantor One of my former rabbis used to say that Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. I think it’s easy to see why – the message of the day is simple, yet fundamental. Although it was originally a day on which the pilgrims gave thanks to God for bringing them safely to America, for us it is a day on which we can reflect on and recall all that we are thankful for in our lives. In the spirit of the holiday, I would like to share with you some things for which I am thankful: I am thankful that I am able to work in a profession that I love, and that I have the opportunity to serve a congregation filled with such wonderful people. I am thankful that I have my family, who are there for me in both the best and the worst of times. I am thankful to be an uncle – my niece and nephew are adorable. I am thankful to have my friends, many of whom are also colleagues. There are many places in our formal liturgy where we thank God. Upon waking up in the morning, we say “Modeh / modah ani:” “I thank You, enduring Sovereign, for restoring my soul to me in compassion. You are faithful beyond measure.” The psalm for Shabbat begins “Tov l’hodot Ladonai (It is good to thank Adonai).” In Hallel, we say “Hodu Ladonai ki tov (Thank Adonai, for God is good)” and “Od’cha ki anitani (I thank You, for You have answered me).” We even devote an entire brachah of every Amidah to thanking God: “Modim anachnu lach.” (For all you Hebrew buffs, “modim anachnu” is the plural of “modeh / modah ani”) We say this brachah three times every day, and four times on days when we have Musaf. Let’s take a look at the end of this brachah: “For all these blessings we shall ever praise and exalt You. May every living creature thank You and praise You faithfully, God of deliverance and our help. Barukh Atah Adonai, ‘The Beneficent One’ is Your name, and it is fitting to give thanks to You.” Happy Thanksgiving,

Cantor Jonathan Schultz

From the President

Just three days before Election Day, my son Marc turns 18. As such, family conversations have focused on the debates and the twists and turns of the campaigns. Marc accompanied me to a local political fundraiser and discussed issues with CBI’s own Eric Lynn, a former advisor to President Barack Obama. Party politics aside, it is most important to be well educated, make a decision and get out there and vote. We are so fortunate as Americans to have the freedom and the power to vote.

After enjoying the beautiful Jewish High Holidays at CBI, we can now turn to November, a time to give thanks, look outward and consider global healing and building community. On Thursday, November 10th at 7am, I have the honor of representing the Jewish community by saying the Invocation prayer at the 15th Annual YMCA Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast held at the Coliseum. I will be sitting alongside clergy and leaders representing a diversity of religions to a crowd of 700 guests. This is my third time representing “our people.” This year it is very nice to be with a childhood friend and our Jewish Mayor Rick Kriseman. Guest speaker will be Lucille O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal’s mom, who will discuss raising a renowned athlete amidst many life struggles. Get ready, get set, go… Our second annual 5K CBI Chase the Dreidel run/walk will be held in December, which will also feature an online Auction fundraiser. CBI’s Jewbilees, our empty nesters and baby boomers social group, is planning to give back to the community at their Christmas Day Tikkun Olam project. Welcome to our newest staff person, Hana Cowart, who joins us as Communications Director. On Hana’s first week on the job, a Tampa Bay Times Photographer snapped a priceless photo of Hana holding her 2-year old Sarah on her shoulders while decorating our CBI Sukkah. The image became a front page, local section photo with cutline. Hana is off to a great start! See you in Shul!

Susan Marger LeVine

From the Director of Lifelong Learning “Each person has a Torah, unique to that person, his or her innermost teaching. Some seem to know their Torahs very early in life and speak and sing them in a myriad of ways. Others spend their whole lives stammering, shaping, and rehearsing them. Some are long, some are short. Some are intricate and poetic, others are only a few words, and still others can only be spoken through gesture and example. But every soul has a Torah.” I immediately connected with this teaching from Rabbi Lawrence Kushner. If I analyze the words through the lens of a Jewish educator, I recognize that there is a variety of potential in every student, and each student possesses differing abilities to access the Torah that is inside. I want to use a variety of tools to cultivate the joy in accessing the Torah. I also want to give our students at every age an opportunity to explore their Torah, because I’ve found that sometimes connecting authentically with our internal Torah requires different techniques as we travel through life! How many ways did we focus on the Torah during the holidays of Tishre? We read the Torah, interpreted the Torah, finished reading the Torah then started reading again, sang songs from the Torah, changed the Torah coverings, linked honored members of our community to the Torah: our Chatanei Torah, honored the Torah with processions and Hakafot, kissed the Torah, and even danced with the Torah. Ten different ways to connect with and experience Torah using all our senses, and hopefully there was something for everyone! What are the innovative tools for Jewish education that we can use in our current setting? How do we integrate religious beliefs and cultural needs in a differentiated manner that allows all learners to embrace their inner Torah? I invite you to help me explore these questions and more later this month as we begin to work together to meet the needs of all our learners. Look for details in our weekly enews!

Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah & Youth GAN YOM RISHON: PARENT AND TOT DROP IN CLASS Sunday mornings 9:45-10:45 am, whenever PRTT Sunday School is in Session. What a fun way to build a vocabulary of Hebrew words through repetition, symbols, and movement. We are applying the same strategy to building Holiday understanding with our youngest learners! Through Gan Yom Rishon we are assisting the yeladim in learning “synagogue skills” in a fun and age-appropriate way. They are having a great time participating in Havdala every Sunday morning, learning some prayers, including the Shema in sign language, and playing games with the Torah before snack. Here’s a favorite: “Someone’s in the circle named Noah! Someone’s in the circle I know. Someone’s in the circle named Noah! Hugging the Torah just so!” See you next Sunday: you are welcome to bring a friend: it is free and open to the Jewish community!

In addition to being your Director of Communications, I am a member of Congregation B’nai Israel along with my husband, Lyle, and daughter, Sarah.

Mitzvah Men’s Club

Women’s League

Did you see the men's club membership list in the lobby at CBI on Yom Kippur? You too can have your name on that list for only $54.00 a year. That is only 15 cents a day. What a deal. If that wasn't enough for no extra charge you can participate in planning and putting on such events as the World Wide Wrap, Suds in the Sukka, Passover BBQ, and many others. Many of your friends belong I am sure. Why not join us with a membership in the Mitzvah Men's Club of CBI?

Women's League takes this opportunity to wish our entire CBI family a year filled with good health and happiness, and peace in the world. On Sunday, October 16, we joined our PRTT students in decorating the Sukka. Fun was had by all. Our kids are adorable, and under the guidance of Maureen Sechan, Director of Lifelong Learning, and the teachers, this intergenerational program was a huge success. The CBI Women's League's team for Sukkah decor included preparations by Vicki Greenfield, Vivian Lurie, and Phyllis Werner; and placement of the higher-level decorations, with ladders and long reaches, by Kathleen Smith-Buns, Reisha Freedman, Ricki and Mark Lewis, Carol Marger, Livia and Steve Wein, and Jackie Wertel. We regret any omissions and thank all who made it happen.

Other upcoming events include Latkes during Hanukka, the World Wide Wrap including Brunch and a speaker, and the Men's Club Kabbalat Shabbat just to mention a few. Leo Lang, President Looking Ahead: Sunday, December 28th cook and serve Latkes to the congregation

Support Shabbat Kiddush Lunch

THE WOMEN’S LEAGUE JUDAICA SHOP Our Judaica Shop has many items for your home or your gift-giving pleasure. Remember, we gift wrap and take special orders. We have an array of items for all the holidays including Hanukka, and Pesach. If you are a Mah Jongg enthusiast, we have several gift items. Please call us for an appointment.

Our Shabbat Kiddush luncheons have become a staple of the past year. Rather than rushing home to eat lunch the CBI community has enjoyed additional time after Shabbat morning services to socialize with friends and make new acquaintances. These lunches have encouraged the Mitzvah of participation in the Shabbat Minha Minyan. They have provided an additional opportunity for those saying Kaddish. Please help your Kehilla continue what has become a beloved part of the CBI Shabbat experience. To contribute to or sponsor a Kiddush luncheon please contact: Livia Wein at 727-393-3289 or email at polyglatt@gmail.com

If you would like to volunteer, please call Diana Litt, 727.392.5554, Eileen Richman, 727.393.6430 or Anita Helfand, 727.347.2300

Kristallnacht Commemoration November 9, 2016 @ 6:30 P.M. The Florida Holocaust Museum The FHM's Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration will observe the 78th Anniversary of Kristallnacht, "the Night of Broken Glass," with a ceremony, including prayers and candle-lighting with Holocaust Survivors. After the ceremony, author Russel Lazega will discuss his book, Managing Bubbie, which centers around his grandmother, Lea Lazega, a fearless Jewish woman who escaped from Nazi Germany to bring her three children safely to the United States.
