BIKKUR HOLIM One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim: visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4901 so that, as clergy and the synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

From the Rabbi Be Happy, It’s Adar Although it is considered a relatively minor holiday, its message is far from simple. The cast of characters, the likes of Esther, Mordechai and Haman, are metaphors for good and evil. And although God’s name is not mentioned once in the ten chapters of the Book of Esther, the Megillah, the presence of God in history is very much obvious. However, Purim’s real message is even more human and basic, one of celebration, joy and happiness. Just that Hebrew definition, “K’shenihnas Adar marbin b’simha – when the month of Adar makes its entrance we are commanded to be a little more joyful.” Even in Persia, thousands of years ago, life was pretty tough. Not just scraping together a living, but just making it through the daily grind of life. And so we have to be reminded in the midst of our trials and tribulations, our personal and collective pains, it is all right to laugh. It is all right to smile and to celebrate, to have fun and enjoy. I remember years ago delivering a message that evoked some laughter from the pulpit and receiving a letter from a long standing member of the congregation, very critical.. How uncomfortable she felt with, “laughter in the sanctuary.” My response was that laughter and joy may be what is missing in synagogue life - the ability to enjoy and to celebrate. Irrespective of your age or station in life, I urge you to join with us, to laugh in the synagogue, to dance in the synagogue, to sing in the synagogue. Let it be a place where as the Megillah tells us, “there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday.” Someone once said, “There is, above all, the laughter that comes from the eternal joy of creation, the joy of making the world new, the joy of expressing the inner riches of the soul – laughter that triumphs over pain and hardship in the passion for an enduring idea, the joy of bringing the light of happiness, of truth and beauty into a dark world. This is divine laughter par excellence. For the laughter of man is the contentment of God.” Let us enjoy the holiday of Purim 5776 together on Wednesday night and Thursday morning the 23rd and 24 th of March. From the Cantor Once again, it’s Purim time! One of the most fun holidays, a time for merriment, joy and celebration. We read the Megillah in an atmosphere of unbridled happiness. We share Mishloah Manot (gifts of food) and we offer Matanot la’Evyonim (special tzedakah for the needy). And we rejoice at a Seudat Purim (festive meal) filled with good food, good drink, family, and friends. One custom at the Seudah is to offer a Purim Kiddush. There are more than a few versions of a Purim Kiddush floating around, some of which spoof the Shabbat or Festival Kiddush, and some of which incorporate liturgical phrases from throughout the year.

Aside from the reading of the Megillah, the main liturgical feature of Purim is the addition of “Al Hanissim” in the Amidah, as we had on Hanukkah. Like the Hanukkah version of “Al Hanissim,” the Purim version recounts briefly the Jews’ military victory against an enemy, and also praises God for standing by us in that time of great distress. The Purim version also quotes directly from the Book of Esther in describing Haman’s plot. Here is the complete translation of the Purim Al Hanissim from our Siddur Sim Shalom:

In the days of Mordecai and Esther, in Shushan, the capital of Persia, the wicked Haman rose up against all Jews and plotted their destruction. In a single day, the thirteenth of Adar, the twelfth month of the year, Haman planned to annihilate all Jews, young and old, and to permit the plunder of their property. You, in great mercy, thwarted his designs, frustrated his plot, and visited upon him the evil he planned to bring on others. Haman, together with his sons, was put to death on the gallows he had made for Mordecai. Hag Purim Sameah!

From the President Let the merriment of Purim begin! If you are to bring your children to shul only two times per year, it should be on Simchat Torah and on Purim. These are the times when the pure joy of Judaism is expressed openly with singing, dancing and merriment. Purim evening at CBI means trivia games, homemade Hamentaschen, and a costume parade, along with our USY’ers reading the Megillah in the main sanctuary. Women’s League is busy baking the most delicious Hamentaschen from Irma Mayer’s coveted recipe. Mishloach Manot package orders are due before March 11 to CBI Women’s League. Purim evening will have a kid-friendly pre-Purim event starting with a mac and cheese dinner and salad at 5:45pm. Dinner price will be $5/person for parents and grandparents, and our very youngest children eat free, followed by interactive activities, and a kiddie costume parade at 6:30. All ages are then invited to come to the main sanctuary for the traditional Ma’ariv service led by Cantor Schultz at 6:45 followed by the Megillah reading by USYers at 7:00. Meanwhile, Debbie Marmon will be chanting the full Megillah in the chapel at 7:00 with all her sound effects (including horses galloping, wine drinking, and character voices). You gotta hear this!! She will be reading on the evening of Purim followed by another complete Megillah reading the following day, Purim morning. Our most amazing Debbie Marmon is moving to New York to be closer to her family. We are sad to see her leave, but we are happy for her to be able to spend more time with her family. The personnel search is on for a Full-time Torah reader. In addition we are interviewing for a Director of Lifelong Learning to direct religious education and youth programming. We also seek a Communications Manager, now that Meg Marger has begun her 1-year teaching commitment in South Korea. From the Executive Director I enjoy good company. That's one of the reasons I agreed to attend the Federation/ Israel Action Network (IAN) several months ago after I learned that Eric Pastman and Byron Kolitz would be part of the group. The objective of our training was to learn how to counter BDS efforts against Israel. I'm not proud to have to admit that I wasn't sure exactly what that meant. What I did know was that I'm pro Israel and that, if Eric and Byron were going to be involved, the initiative would be pro Israel. In case you're a little fuzzy about the BDS -- Boycott, Divest, Sanction -- movement is about, here's a quick explanation. Those invested in the movement are trying to convince businesses, institutions of higher education, mainline Protestant groups, and others that they should not have dealings with Israel. Their rationale is that Israelis have been oppressing Palestinians and continue to do so. The contend that the Israelis are not negotiating in good faith to find a two-state solution. Their ultimate goal is not a two-state solution at all; rather, they are working to eliminate the State of Israel. The BDS proponents are well funded, hard working, highly motivated, and aggressively anti- Semitic. They have proven to be tough adversaries because, somewhat counter-intuitively, purely logical, truthful, and honest responses are tossed aside. The work that were doing here in Tampa Bay is cutting edge. Our goal is to develop relationships that will, over time, make it possible for us to have real discussions with those targeted or about to be targeted by the BDS movement. After all, we share many common concerns, e.g., human rights. We just have to make the connections. As we do that, we'll be reaching out to our entire Jewish community to teach, train, and ask you to invest your time in joining the anti-BDS movement. In the meantime, take a minute to thank some Florida legislators who spearheaded a new state law that "defends the state against the bigotry and discrimination of the BDS Movement, and the economic harm it causes." They are Senator Joe Negron, Representatives Ritchie Workman, Jared Moskowitz, and Kevin Rader. And join us here at CBI on Wednesday evening, March 16, to hear Marc Melamed from the ADL speak about global anti-Semitism. Together, let's learn all we can and, in the spirit of Purim, Esther, and Mordechai, DO all we can to fight anti-Semitism. B'Shalom

LEGACY GIFT MYTHS

I already support CBI annually. We thank you for your continued support, which allows us to keep our doors open. But, what happens when you are no longer here to support us? A legacy gift continues your support forever.

I don’t want the publicity associated with legacy giving. If you don’t want the world to know about your generosity, you can choose to remain anonymous.

Only seniors can leave a legacy gift. Seniors are an important group, but everyone—no matter their ages—can support their cherished causes beyond their lifetimes.

Legacy gifts are complicated, and I will need to hire an attorney. There are many ways to make a legacy gift, which do not require an attorney. For example, you can name CBI as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy or retirement (IRA or 401(k)) fund. If you want to take advantage of certain estate planning techniques like charitable trusts, we will work with your attorney.

I won’t get to decide what happens to my gift. Even though you won’t be here to see the impact your gift will be making, you can stipulate how your gift will be spent. If you want to benefit scholarships for PRTT or Saturday Kiddushes, just stipulate that as part of your gift. Since it can be difficult to predict what will be needed in 25 or 50 years, undirected gifts will provide the most flexibility for CBI in its future.

The Board of Trustees will spend my legacy gift immediately instead of using it in perpetuity. Your gift will be held in trust by Tampa Orlando Pinellas Jewish Foundation, Inc. (TOP). TOP will invest your gift, and each year CBI will receive 5% of the current value of your original gift.

If CBI dissolves, so will my money. CBI has been a St. Petersburg Jewish institution for over 90 years. When you make your gift commitment, you can designate with TOP the other organizations or causes to continue to receive your legacy gift in the unlikely event CBI ceases to exist.

My family will be getting all of my money. Everyone wants to make certain that their family is financially secure. Consider leaving just a portion of your estate to charitable causes. A gift like this can provide an ethical lesson for your children to live up to the values that you have instilled in them.

I might need my money. Your money will be there for you if and(delete) when you need it. A legacy gift is not paid until you are no longer here to need your money.

I have to be a millionaire to leave a legacy gift. The beauty of a legacy gift is that you can make a gift of any amount (or any portion) of your estate. Whether your gift is worth a few shekels or a few billion, your gift is your legacy. And your legacy will live on!

Mishloach Manot Get ready for Purim by performing the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot the easy way. Once again, our CBI Women’s League will bake the hamantashen and add some other tasty treats. Packages will be available for pick up in the Sembler Family Atrium on Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23. Deadline to order is Friday, March 11. Unfortunately we are unable to take orders after this date so please get your orders in asap!

Talmud Made Easy

Ruth Mauer leads a Beginners Hebrew class for “true” beginners to learn to read Hebrew and a little vocabulary with a focus on enriching your enjoyment of the Shabbat Evening Service. The classes combine an atmosphere of relaxation and good friendship along with an emphasis on serious learning. Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 6:45 – 8:15 pm on March 9, 16 and 30.

Steve Wein continues to lead Talmud study classes. He teaches in English, and explains all! Materials are provided. No special knowledge is required. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings, March 9 and 16, at 7:00 in the Buns Family Library.

Rosh Hodesh Women’s Group Sunday, March 13, 10:30 am This session will be facilitated by Susan Turner, at the home of Valerie Hyman. Join other CBI women for this monthly get together. We’ll share a little learning, a little schmoozing, and a lot of noshing !

Kabbalat Shabbat Carlebach Kabbalat Shabbat services feature melodies written by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Reb Shlomo, as he was known to his followers, was a teacher, composer, and singer who was known as “The Singing Rabbi” during his lifetime (1925 – 1994). Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he branched out to create his own style combining Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, public concerts, and song-filled synagogue services.
