B’nai Israel REVIEW June/July 2016

Our Mission

Through our congregational life, our goal is to provide the opportunity for our members and friends to experience Jewish life to its fullest. We want to transmit the ideals of Conservative Judaism to our children and grandchildren, to enable them to be knowledgeable and responsible participants in Jewish life, sensitive and ethical human beings and reliable custodians of an enduring heritage. Through the synagogue, we want to find strength and inspiration in worship and study, in the sharing of life cycle events, in acts of caring, in reaching out to the wide Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and in concern and support for Israel.

Kehilla BIKKUR HOLIM One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim: visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4901 so that, as clergy and the synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

SHABBAT DINNER AT PBT The Benjamin Tower Foundation invites CBI congregants who would like to join PBT residents for Shabbat dinners. Dinner is $10 every Friday at 4:45 pm. This is a great opportunity to enjoy dinner and fellowship before walking over to CBI for Shabbat services. RSVP with payment and entrée choice to Debbie Kobernick by Wednesdays at 12:00 pm: 727.347.5191 or dkobernick@benjamintowerfoundation.org.

From the Rabbi The holiday of Shavuot operates on several different levels. On the one hand, it is an entirely independent festival that marks “the giving of the Torah.” At the same time, it is clearly tied to the holiday of Passover by the ritual of the “Counting of the Omer.” In the words of Maimonides: “We count the days that pass since the preceding festival, just as one who expects his most intimate friend on a certain day counts the days and even the hours. This is the reason why we count the days…between the anniversary of our departure from Egypt and the anniversary of the Law giving. The latter was the aim and object of the exodus from Egypt.” In other words, the freedom gained during the exodus and celebrated at Passover only becomes true freedom at Shavuot with the acceptance of Torah. The biblical omission of a precise date for that act of acceptance teaches that although the initial act of receiving the Torah at Sinai was crucial, the ongoing acceptance of the Torah by each Jew every day of every generation is part of the process. The Israelites received the Torah “bayom hazeh” – on this day, a deliberately, open-ended expression rather than a specific chronological date to teach that “this day” is really every day. Revelation is ongoing in our lives, if we permit it to function. As we develop our sense of accepting the Torah and let its relevance inform the nature and fabric of our lives, then we become the critical link from Sinai to our own day. The giving of the Torah took place at Sinai; the receiving of the Torah takes place every day if we permit it. Yes, it can even continue into the summer months. The longer days give us the opportunity to try new experiences, hopefully, some of them intended to broaden our Jewish horizons and deepen our knowledge and understanding of the tradition received at Sinai. Take the time to read some books of Jewish content and even indulge yourself in some moments of meditation and prayer, preferably in the synagogue. Have a great Shavuot holiday June 11, 12 and 13 and a wonderful and refreshing summer. Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

From the Cantor I am writing this article on Lag Ba’Omer. I mean, literally: as I am writing this, today is Lag Ba’Omer. So, what is Lag Ba’Omer? “Lag Ba’Omer” literally means “the thirty-third day of the Omer,” which is like calling Independence Day “The Fourth of July.” According to tradition, this day marks the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a sage and mystic who lived in the Second Century C.E. He was the first to publicly teach the mystical dimension of the Torah known as the “Kabbalah,” and he was the author of the basic work of Kabbalah, the Zohar. On the day of his passing, Rabbi Shimon instructed his disciples to mark the date as “the day of my joy.” As a day of joy, practices of semi-mourning, traditionally practiced during the counting of the Omer, are suspended on Lag Ba’Omer, and the day is celebrated with outings, bonfires, and other joyous events. It is also a popular day for weddings, being one of the only days during the Omer when weddings may be held. Lag Ba’Omer also means that summer is just around the corner, and many of us will be going away on summer vacations, myself included. I will be traveling on a Cantors Assembly Mission to Spain in July, billed as “The Sephardic Sites and Sounds of Spain.” I plan to tell you more about my experience after I return, but here are some of the highlights: We will: Celebrate Sephardic culture and song, with special CA Concerts and Events throughout. Have high level speakers, featuring Professor Stephen Berk and more. Tour the world famous Prado Museum and stroll through beautiful Retiro Park in Madrid. Celebrate Shabbat in Madrid. Visit the Grand Toledo Cathedral and the Transito Synagogue in the Imperial City of Toledo. Enjoy a special Ladino program at Casa De Sefarad in Cordoba. Visit the Moorish Alcazar Palace and the Old Jewish Quarter in Seville. Tour the Alhambra Palace in Grenada, where the expulsion decree was signed in 1492. Walk in the steps of the ancient synagogue in Barcelona. Visit the former Jewish center of Gerona. …and more!

Shalom, Cantor Jonathan Schultz

From the President

Our synagogue is blessed with caring, optimistic leaders who have made great strides in our first year of the 5-year strategic plan. As a congregational community it has become our passion to welcome, connect and engage Jews of all ages. A highlight for me this year has been watching our synagogue come to life when children run up the steps to the Bima following monthly Tot Shabbat and Junior Congregations services. In the spirit of welcoming all Jews, CBI will be hosting our first-ever Pride Shabbat service with keepsake Rainbow Kippot and a sermonette by Kevin Lane from FreeFall Theater, followed by a cocktail reception on Friday evening, June 24. CBI is sponsoring a table at the Sunday Pride celebration in downtown St. Pete. While staff and volunteers worked to welcome young families, youth and millennials, synagogue leaders designed a staffing structure to better support a congregation which relies heavily on its large vibrant volunteer base. New staff will be in place by July 1. Please welcome: Maureen Sechan as Director of Lifelong Learning, Robert Weinrib as Baal Koreh (Torah Reader) and Director of Business and Operations, and Kaylee Holland as Director of Communications. This linear staffing model replaces the executive director with the president and board of trustees and includes a budget savings of $25,000. Please join me in wishing our Executive Director Susan Goldstein all the best in the future after her contract ends at the end of June. I have had the pleasure to work closely with her this past year, and her talents will be missed. The new directors join our team: Pam Askin in her new role as Director of Congregant Support, Liz Sembler as Engagement Director, Rachel Bennett as Director of Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center and, of course, Rabbi Jacob Luski and Cantor Jonathan Schultz. Our wonderful maintenance and kitchen staff includes Pei Tuinakavaudra, Christopher Hale, Chris Hale and Amy Hale. Our strength is in our multitude of volunteers: Women’s League to Mitzvah Mens Club, leadership, Torah readers, service leaders, Gift and Craft ladies, Chase the Dreidel organizers, directory and bulletin, Yizkor Booklets, Rosh Chodesh planners, adult education, religious school PRTT and Hebrew High Re-Mix, Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center PRECEC Bubbies reading books, guest speakers, event planners, fund raisers, front desk assistance, bulletin and directory ad sales, mailings, Shabbat ritual, Summer Sermons, money crunchers, High Holiday planners, Chorus, Got Shabbat dinners, Shabbat home hospitality, personnel, youth, ish, Millenials, Israel Advocacy A-team, JNF, Gulfcoast GCJFS Food drives, Israel Bonds, transliteration and service how-to booklets, Burial Society, Tikkun Olam and visiting the sick and bereaved. Call out to all volunteers and others with interest, please join Kaylee for lunch and a volunteer sign-up at CBI on Monday, June 6!

Susan Marger LeVine

From the Executive Director It doesn’t seem as if it’s been almost three years since I came here for a seven-month gig as interim executive director. But that’s what it will be very soon, and now it’s time to say l’hitraot to some of you, good-by to a few, and thank you to many. The first and biggest thank you goes to Laurie Reiskind. We met at the USCJ Biennial in 2011 when the soon-to-be president found herself at a table with a group of executive directors. Fortunately, we didn’t scare her too badly! I was happily surprised to hear from her a couple of years later when she and her leadership team were looking for an interim ED. I’ve come to not only to care for Laurie as a friend, but to admire and respect her for her courage, intelligence, and heart. Thank you to Byron Kolitz and Eric Pastman who work so hard to inculcate a passion for Israel in each of us. Their success in that mission is one of the outstanding values of this kehilla. Cantor Jonathan Schultz, thank you for the kavanah you bring to our worship services. And CBI Choir members, I’ve loved making music with you. Rachel Bennett, working with you has been sheer pleasure. Thank you for the energy and love of our children that you bring to PRECEC and for infusing joy into our community. Ricki Lewis, thank you for moving fearlessly into the void that was PRTT a couple of years ago – and for conquering it. Thank you, Larry Freid and Forrest Feld, for guiding me gently through the worlds where you rule. And there are others of you to whom I am grateful, but space is limited and you know who you are. Todah Rabah. I’ve come to care very much about this kehilla and, in particular, its place in south Pinellas Jewish life. Please remember that, without CBI, there would be no Conservative Judaism in St. Pete – and I hope that is important to you. Support CBI and support its leadership. Share your talents in whatever way you can. Give financially to the extent you are able. And don’t forget that, while today’s dollars are important, it’s also essential to sustain the community in the future by making a legacy gift so that this community will be here for your grandchildren – and beyond.

B’Shalom,

Susan Goldstein

Advocacy for Israel Committee Israel - A Tapestry Nearing the end of the Pesach to Shavuot season, I find it fitting to reflect on the legacy of liberation and freedom for the Jewish people that the State of Israel represents today. Israel truly serves as a bastion for Jewish communities of every variety. It’s important to understand this fact as Jews are often mischaracterized as a homogeneous group, with all elements of cultural and ritual distinction ignored. My experiences on my Birthright trip in 2013 compelled my interest in how varied and colorful Jewish cultural really is. Jews have forged unique communities throughout Africa, Asia, Western Europe, and the Middle East and while creating their own traditions, have remained inextricably linked through a common bond in the Jewish faith. The other legacy which each of these communities has shared is that of persecution to one degree or another. One can scarcely speak of the history of Jewish life in any area without recounting how each one had to contend with the brutality of intolerance and the prospect of elimination. My tour of Yad Vashem included a recorded interview with a Greek Holocaust survivor from the lost community of Salonika. His memories were virtually all that remained of a once vibrant and beautiful community, host to schools and centers of art and creativity. That his world should exist as a tragic memory in Israel rather than a living reality in Greece underscores the vital role that Israel has come to play in maintaining the tapestry of Jewish cultures that have developed throughout the world. Indeed, it can be said that Israel’s very existence and necessity were reinforced during the expulsion of nearly a million Jews from Arab lands in the years following Israel’s rebirth. Communities that had existed for millennia were uprooted, collective punishment for the audacity of Israel’s stubborn determination. While our Season of Liberation is drawing to a close, the urgent appeal to memory and preservation, which it stirs within us, should never diminish. Even as Israel just marked 68 years since its rebirth, Jewish communities remain in peril. Every Jewish person has an obligation not merely to preserve his/her own immediate community, but to help ensure that the flame of Jewish life does not fade in any part of the world. We must bear this obligation so that the legacy of our faith will reside beyond the confines of distant memory. Robert Weiner rhweiner@mail.usf.edu
