B’nai Israel REVIEW January 2016
Our Mission
Through our congregational life, our goal is to provide the opportunity for our members and friends to experience Jewish life to its fullest. We want to transmit the ideals of Conservative Judaism to our children and grandchildren, to enable them to be knowledgeable and responsible participants in Jewish life, sensitive and ethical human beings and reliable custodians of an enduring heritage. Through the synagogue, we want to find strength and inspiration in worship and study, in the sharing of life cycle events, in acts of caring, in reaching out to the wide Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and in concern and support for Israel.

BIKKUR HOLIM One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim: visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4901 so that, as clergy and the synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress. SHABBAT DINNER AT PBT The Benjamin Tower Foundation invites CBI congregants who would like to join PBT residents for Shabbat dinners. Dinner is $10 every Friday at 4:45 pm. This is a great opportunity to enjoy dinner and fellowship before walking over to CBI for Shabbat services. CBI will post each week’s menu to cbistpete.org on Monday afternoons. RSVP with payment and entrée choice to Debbie Kobernick by Wednesdays at 12:00 pm: 727.347.5191 or dkobernick@benjamintowerfoundation.org.
2015-16 CBI Membership Directories are in! Pick up yours in the office! Help us reduce mailing costs by picking up your copy from CBI. Do you want to know how you can secure CBI’s future and bring in dollars today? Call Susan Goldstein to find out. Susan Goldstein: 727.344.1017 execdir@cbistpete.org
If you notice that your information is not correct, please contact Pam Askin in the synagogue office with corrections/ additions. We regret any errors that occurred. Several sets of eyes proof read the material multiple times. We plan to list corrections in an upcoming bulletin.

From the Rabbi Tu B’shvat reminds us of our loyalty to conservancy and the environment. Tu B’shvat affords us an opportunity to remember a great European rabbi whose love of nature was a source of many of his scholarly writings. The Encyclopedia Judaica has an informative article on his life. Largely forgotten in our times, the name of Rabbi Immanuel Loew was legendary in Hungarian Jewry. In 1878 he became rabbi of Szeged. The synagogue in that town is one of the most beautiful in the world and was built in 1903 according to his plans. During the “white terror” revolution in Hungary 1920-1921, Rabbi Loew was imprisoned for thirteen months for a supposed statement made against the fascist dictator Admiral Horthy. While in jail, he worked on his four-volume work Die Flora der Juden. In these books he thoroughly delved into flora terminology in Hebrew and Aramaic writings of different periods. He also interested himself in other aspects of nature. His last manuscript was called Mineralien der Juden, which was not originally published for the following reason. When the Germans occupied Hungary in 1944 just after his 90 th birthday, he was sent to work in a brick factory. Later he was put on a deportation train but freed by Zionist partisans. He died of natural cuses later that year. The Jewish people have always loved nature. Our celebration of a New Year for the Trees in the depth of winter, reminds us of our loyalty to conservancy and the environment even when we may be suffering oppression. We anxiously await the Messiah, but even his coming, according to the Talmud, cannot be acknowledged if we are in the act of planting a tree. The dedicated life of Rabbi Immanuel Loew personifies this love of the earth, in spite of the persecution he endured. As we celebrate Tu B’shvat 5776 on Sunday evening, January 24, and Monday, January 25, let us reaffirm our dedication to nature and our environment. Let us plant trees in the CBI JNF Parkland as we show our commitment to reclaiming and rebuilding the land of Israel. Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
From the Cantor WE HAVE TWO CONCERTS COMING UP! SAVE THE DATES! The annual Bay Area Cantorial Association (BACA) concert will take place on Thursday, February 4, at 7:00 pm at Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Road, Tampa. Presented by Cantors and Cantorial Soloists from the Tampa Bay and Sarasota regions, this year’s theme will be “There’s No Business Like Shul Business: A Cantors Cabaret!” Tickets are available at the door for a suggested donation of $18 each. All proceeds benefit scholarships for students of Conservative and Reform Schools of Sacred Cantorial Music. As if that weren’t enough, CBI is pleased to welcome Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi on Sunday, February 21, at 4:00 pm. Hazzan Mizrahi is one of the most famous cantors in the world, and he is affectionately known as “The Jewish Pavarotti.” The concert will feature a mix of cantorial, Sephardic and Yiddish selections, as well as some popular opera and art song selections. I am pleased to tell you that I will also be performing in the concert, as will CBI’s very own Rebecca Zapen, a professional violinist. Greek-born tenor, Alberto Mizrahi, one of the world's leading interpreters of Jewish music, is Hazzan of the historic Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago. He has thrilled audiences worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts, and opera. His repertoire, spanning Hebrew, Yiddish, Italian, Greek, English, French, German and Russian songs, cantorials and arias makes his performances unique in the field. Appearances and recordings for the Milken Archive and the likes of the late Theodore Bikel and Dave Brubeck, as well as Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, many other notable musicians have led him to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Schoenberg “Kol Nidre” conducted by Riccardo Muti), the New York Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Barcelona, Graz, Madrid, and Simon Bolivar orchestras among many others. He has sung recitals in a mélange of languages and styles, in synagogues, concert halls and opera houses throughout the world and in front of two U.S. Presidents. Hazzan Mizrahi is the President of the Cantors Assembly, and serves on the faculty of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary. He serves on the boards of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Zamir Choral Foundation, Masorti Olami, and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. L’shalom, Cantor Jonathan Schultz

From the President I continue to enjoy the excitement generated by our first ever “Run for the Dreidel” 5K! It exceeded expectations with running enthusiasts joining walkers, baby strollers, and cheerleaders as they crossed the Finish Line to our traditional Chanukkah music, Menorah lighting by Mayor Rick Kriseman, and our Mitzvah Mens Club Latke celebration. Please see our CBIstpete.org website for the links to news coverage and our Facebook photo page. “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us,” quoted by Alexander Graham Bell. When one CBI “door closes, another opens.” Our long-term, Torah reader and B’nai Mitzvah educator Debbie Marmon moves to New York to be close to family this coming April. Debbie has enriched our services for many, many years. The CBI Ritual committee met and reported they feel it is in the best interest of CBI to maintain full Torah readings, if possible. The Board of Trustees will consider their wishes as we open doors and move forward. This news, combined with the loss of our Youth Director Melanie Tolchin in December, has brought together volunteers to ensure continuity as we plan the remainder of the school year. Volunteer committees for youth, PRTT religious school and PRECEC preschool are meeting to make all our youth programs stronger and more vibrant. With personnel offering multi-faceted opportunities, the Executive Board has scheduled a retreat focusing on personnel topics. We will bring back options upon which the board of trustees may decide. Let’s welcome back Dianne Gettler, who has re-joined our staff, working in accounting. Dianne will work as a team with our treasurer to increase transparency of cash flow. Congratulate Rachel Bennett who is Interim Director for Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center. Ms. Rachel replaces Amy LaPiccirella, who left to complete her masters degree. Ms. Rachel was Assistant Director under Katie and then Amy and is now working with lay education leaders to grow the program. Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who have stepped forward to give their time to strengthen Conservative Judaism in St. Petersburg! See you in Shul! Susan Marger LeVine
From the Executive Director “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” (Hillel) As many of you know, I serve as editor of the NAASE Journal. I’m pleased to be co-editor of the first joint NAASE/NATA Journal that will be published in the next couple of months. (NAASE – the North American Association of Synagogue Executives --is the group of executive directors affiliated with the Conservative movement, and NATA – National Association of Temple Administrators –is the group affiliated with the Reform movement.) As synagogue executive directors, we believe that we can only benefit from combining our knowledge, experience, and talents. We have been actively seeking ways in which we can participate together and, after a year or so of shared webinars, the joint journal is a next logical step. In 2017, we will hold a joint conference in Nashville. Why am I writing about this now?! As I ponder editorial comments for the joint journal, I’ve been focusing on our topic, the first line of the Hillel quote above. The journal articles are addressing ways in which we, as executive directors, can look out for ourselves: e.g., exercise, eating right, setting boundaries. Then I starting to wonder how one might apply that notion to kehillot and the people who make them what they are. As with most everything in Judaism, there is more than one answer. Here’s one possible analysis. There are many worthwhile causes out there to which we should, and do, give our time and money. But how many of them could not exist without YOU? The synagogue holds a unique role in our lives. It’s the place we turn when we’re celebrating the good things in our lives, and it’s the place we turn when we’re going through the hardest times. We expect our kehilla -- our community -- to be there when we need it. Without YOU, there is no kehilla. If I am not there for my kehilla, supporting it with my volunteer talents and financial assets to the best of my ability, how can it be there for me ? B’Shalom,

A MESSAGE FROM HANNAH WEISS
Hi, CBI! My name is Hannah Weiss and I am HaNegev's Regional Social Action/Tikun Olam VP for the 2015-2016 year. USY raises Tikun Olam in many different ways, and all of the money we raise goes to aid over fifty Jewish charities globally. This year, I am encouraging synagogues to help USYers raise money to allocate to Tikun Olam. If 100 CBI families donate $20 each, we'll raise $2,000, surpassing our $100 donation from last year! CBI - we can repair the world, together, one small step at a time. One small act of kindness at a time, Hannah Mae Weiss, HaNegev SA/TO VP 2015-2016

TORAH FUND 2015-2016 Nat’ah Karem - Family 5776 Tuesday, March 8, 6:00 pm
Honoring Carol Marger Women’s League for Conservative Judaism’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world, and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families. The new Torah Fund theme for 2015-2016 (5776) is Nat’ah karem, a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman, who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin. DONATIONS $180 - Benefactor $300 - Guardian Level $600 - Associate Patron $1,200 - Patron $2,500 - Scholarship (Annual) $5,000 - Keter Kavod (Annual) This year your support of Torah Fund as a benefactor remains at a donation of $180. Checks made out to “Torah Fund,” mailed to Marilyn LeVine, 1900 Park St., St. Petersburg, 33710. With your pledge, you will receive this beautiful gold and silver pin. Higher gift giving is also available, $300 for Guardian, $600 for Associate Patron, see above opportunities.
