BIKKUR HOLIM One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim: visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4901 so that, as clergy and the synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress. SHABBAT DINNER AT PBT The Benjamin Tower Foundation invites CBI congregants who would like to join PBT residents for Shabbat dinners. Dinner is $10 every Friday at 4:45 pm. From the Rabbi The Daily Minyan @ CBI When was the last time you made it to the minyan? Twice daily, we have the opportunity to strengthen our community by participating and sharing in the joy and responsibility of making a minyan. Attending the daily minyan, in one respect, serves a charitable purpose. It allows others to pray and recite Kaddish for their loved ones. Just as significant, are the spiritual gifts you receive from the service itself. It is diverse in its attendees and filled with beautiful melodies, a special ruach, Torah readings on Monday and Thursday mornings, opportunities to have an Aliyah, and the chance to take a meaningful pause in your day and to connect with friends. As members of a synagogue community, we owe it to each other and to ourselves to participate regularly in the daily minyan. Please join us: Monday – Friday 7:45 am; Sundays & Legal holidays 9:00 am; Evenings: Sunday – Thursday 6:30 pm. In Judaism, there are three daily prayer services: morning – Shaharit, afternoon – Minha, and evening – Maariv. The tradition of three services is attributed to the prayers of our forefathers. The morning prayer was learned from Abraham, the afternoon prayer from Isaac, and the evening prayer from Jacob. These services also recall the three daily sacrifices offered in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The morning service is divided into several sections, which include the Shema and the Amidah – the standing prayer of 19 key blessings; the afternoon prayer consists of the Amidah and supplications; and the evening service consists the Shema and the Amidah. Morning prayer is recited wearing tefillin and tallit. You can learn how to wrap tefillin by coming to the morning minyan with the help from our Minyannaires. Each service is unique in its way and offers us different opportunities for connection and introspection. Individual prayer is encouraged, but prayer with a quorum of 10 Jewish adults – a minyan – is the most highly recommended form of prayer and is required for some prayers. An adult in this context means over the age of 13. Prayer is the service of the heart and is one of the many ways to express love of God and community. Although one may pray in private, praying with a congregation provides the opportunity to come together in a most beautiful and meaningful way. From the Cantor WE HAVE TWO CONCERTS THIS MONTH! COME ON OUT! The annual Bay Area Cantorial Association (BACA) concert will take place on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm at Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Rd, Tampa. Presented by Cantors and Cantorial Soloists from the Tampa Bay and Sarasota regions, this year’s theme will be “There’s No Business Like Shul Business: A Cantors Cabaret!” Tickets are available at the door for a suggested donation of $18 each. All proceeds benefit scholarships for students of Conservative and Reform Schools of Sacred Cantorial Music. As if that weren’t enough, CBI is pleased to welcome Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 4:00 pm. Hazzan Mizrahi is one of the most famous cantors in the world, and he is affectionately known as “The Jewish Pavarotti.” The concert will feature a mix of cantorial, Sephardic and Yiddish selections, as well as some popular opera and art song selections. I am pleased to tell you that I will also be performing in the concert, as will CBI’s very own Rebecca Zapen, a professional violinist. Greek-born tenor, Alberto Mizrahi, one of the world's leading interpreters of Jewish music, is Hazzan of the historic Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago. He has thrilled audiences worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts, and opera. His repertoire, spanning Hebrew, Yiddish, Italian, Greek, English, French, German and Russian songs, cantorials and arias makes his performances unique in the field. Appearances and recordings for the Milken Archive and the likes of the late Theodore Bikel and Dave Brubeck, as well as Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, many other notable musicians have led him to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Schoenberg “Kol Nidre” conducted by Riccardo Muti), the New York Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Barcelona, Graz, Madrid, and Simon Bolivar orchestras among many others. He has sung recitals in a mélange of languages and styles, in synagogues, concert halls and opera houses throughout the world and in front of two U.S. Presidents. Hazzan Mizrahi is the President of the Cantors Assembly, and serves on the faculty of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary. From the President Our Children, Our Guarantors Love for Judaism begins at birth when a community rejoices together as a new child is embraced into the fold. Much like the opening scene in the movie “Lion King,” the proud parents bring their child to the Torah in front of the congregation to declare the new Jewish child. At Mussie Eidelman’s recent great-grand-baby’s naming ceremony, a well-known Midrash was quoted regarding the Jewish children being the Guarantors of God’s gift of Torah. In this Midrash, out of concern that the Torah may become abandoned, God asks the Jewish people to name a Guarantor. After considering the elders, then the rabbis and spiritual leaders, God ultimately decides that children are the ideal Guarantors of the Torah. When a child is taught Torah from an early age, the child acquires a taste for it, a love of study that accompanies him/her throughout life and into adulthood. The study of Torah is passed on to their children and their children’s children. At our first Junior Congregation Service, Avi Reich and Noah Adelson read Torah, under the tutelage of Morah Debbie Marmon and Cantor Schultz. This learning service was held in the Chapel and parents and grandparents and other students k’velled as these two children chanted their portions proudly and beautifully. On this same Shabbat morning, Pam Himmel led a Tot Shabbat for infants through Grade 2 and complimentary Child Care was offered in a preschool room. At the conclusion of children services, all children ascended the Bima with Siddurs for Aleinu. We had about 16 kids and the congregation delighted in seeing the older children assist the younger kids with page turns. The uplifting spirit that Shabbat morning felt palpable. Future Junior Congregations, Tot Shabbats and Childcare will be held: Shabbat Morning, February 13; Friday Evening, March 4; Shabbat Morning, April 9, and Shabbat Morning, May 14. From the Executive Director The Jewish Pavarotti a/k/a My Friend Abe I’m delighted that you will have the pleasure of meeting and hearing Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi on Sunday afternoon, February 21. I had the extreme good fortune of working with him for over 20 years as part of his Festival Choir at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago. Many of you know the story of how I came to Judaism. While working for my Master of Music degree at Northwestern University, I was hired by Anshe Emet’s Hazzan Moses Silverman, z”l, for the High Holy Days choir. In those days, Anshe Emet had a professional choir and an organ every Shabbat and, eventually, I worked my way to that smaller, elite group. I fell in love with the music, and that lead me to Judaism. A couple of years after Hazzan Silverman’s death, the new guy on the bimah, stage right, was Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi. Pretty soon, Hazzan Mizrahi and his bimah bro, stage left, Rabbi Michael Siegel, nixed the organ. (It’s still there, but used only occasionally for weddings.) The weekly choral gigs soon were nixed, too, and we sang only for High Holy Days, chaggim, and B’nai Mitzvah Shabbatot when requested. But we were making even better music, learning more, and having a wonderful time. That’s because of Alberto, also called Abe. Abe made sure that his choir (about 95% non-Jewish) understood the meaning and context of what we were singing. He is an amazing teacher and mentor. For many years, he has invited young Jewish musicians to join him on the bimah for High Holy Days services. Many have gone on to become professional musicians thanks, in part, to Abe’s generosity. He is extremely supportive of growing Jewish musicians, not only through his joyful sharing of the bimah, his teaching at JTS, and his mentoring of young cantors through the Cantors Assembly, but also through his work with the Zamir Choral Foundation and its international Jewish high school choir network, Hazamir. Abe and his wife Debbie are gracious hosts, opening their home for Shabbat and chaggim. Nothing makes one feel as welcome as catching a piece of challah thrown by Hazzan Mizrahi! (It’s a Sephardic thing.) And there’s the groupie experience. Some of us travel to hear our friend; maybe it’s Manhattan for a day. (One of us is in Paris as I write; alas, it’s not I.) It’s fun to hear Abe and hang out for a little while with him and Debbie. We listen, talk, laugh, and learn. And we always are better for the experience. You and I don’t have to travel to hear Abe on February 21, but some of my fellow groupies will. Please join us for this joyous event, featuring Hazzan Mizrahi and our own Hazzan Jonathan Schultz and violinist Rebecca Zapen. You will be SO glad you did! B’Shalom,

Guest speaker St. Petersburg Chief of Police Anthony Holloway Chief Holloway earned his Bachelor of Arts degree (Business Management) in 1999 and Master’s degree (Business Administration) in 2001. In June of 2011, he was awarded a Certificate of Completion for the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, Executive Education and in August of 2015 he successfully completed the Executive Leaders Program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Chief Holloway has taught law enforcement to governmental, educational, and community organizations throughout Florida. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar in June 2012 and serves as Co-Chair of the Law Enforcement Committee of the Criminal Justice of the American Bar Association. He was also elected President of the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association in January 2015. He is a current member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police and serves as consultant/trainer to organizations such as the Department of Juvenile Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, and St. Petersburg College.

Packages will be available for pick up in the Sembler Family Atrium on Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23. Deadline to order is Friday, March 11. The Voice of a People Sunday, February 21 at 4:00 p.m. One of the world’s greatest Jewish musicians, tenor soloist and Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi, will take the stage in the CBI sanctuary in a program called The Voice of a People that will include Sephardic and Ashkenazic cantorial numbers and a variety of operatic arias and classical solos and duos on Jewish themes. Joining him will be pianist Gary Lawrence, our own Hazzan Jonathan Schultz and violinist Rebecca Zapen, a CBI member. Greek-born Alberto Mizrahi is Hazzan of the historic Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago. He has thrilled audiences worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts, and opera. His repertoire, spanning nine languages and a myriad of styles, makes his performances unique in the field. Mizrahi’s extensive discography numbers over 25 CDs including six for the Milken Archive on Naxos (including one with jazz great Dave Brubeck), FESTIVAL DELIGHTS & THE HIGH HOLY DAYS (with Schola Hebraeica), BIRTHDAY OF THE WORLD I & II (with Theodor Bikel, Leonard Nimoy and The Western Wind), YIZKOR with the Afro-Semitic Experience, BIKEL & MIZRAHI: Our Song; ALBERTO MIZRAHI: My Song, and ALBERTO MIZRAHI AT MENUHIN HALL. In addition, Mizrahi is featured on the film “100 Voices: A Journey Home” (Cantors Assembly trip to Poland); the celebrated PBS concert, “CANTORS: A Faith in Song” (in the Amsterdam Portuguese Synagogue); and the PBS Hanukkah Special with Craig Taubman. He premiered and has performed “Kadysz” for the composer/conductor, Krzysztof Penderecki in Lodz, Warsaw, Bialystok, Caracas (Venezuela), and Graz (Austria). In addition, Hazzan Mizrahi is President of the Cantors Assembly, on the Board of the Jewish Theological Seminary, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Masorti Olami, Zamir Choral Foundation and on the faculty of the H .L. Miller Cantorial School J.T.S., New York. Gary Lawrence has been a professional pianist and arranger for over forty years. A graduate of Brooklyn College, he is adept with classical, jazz, klezmer and other traditional Jewish repertoire. In addition, Lawrence is a veteran of the famous Catskills "Borscht Belt," having worked at many resorts, including Brown's Hotel and Grossingers. While living in New York, he formed The Sizzling Syncopators, which appeared on national TV and recorded for several labels. Since moving to Florida in 1978, Lawrence has been the leader of two radio orchestras -- The WFTL Orchestra and The WLQY "Music of Your Life" Orchestra -- and is currently has an Internet radio show--blog "Chopin, Tchaikovsky … And All That Jazz!” Hazzan Jonathan Schultz became CBI’s Cantor in October 2011. Prior to completing his graduate degree at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s H. L. Miller Cantorial School, Hazzan Schultz earned a physics degree and music minor at the U. of Rochester, worked for several years as an engineer, then trained for an operatic career. Now an active member of the Bay Area Cantorial Association (BACA), Schultz is also devoted to a capella singing, choral conducting and composing. His piece “Shalom Rav,” has been published in Transcontinental Music’s Shabbat Anthology, Volume VI. Versatile violinist Rebecca Zapen first began her music studies at the age of 3, later graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from the School of Music at Florida State University. The multi-faceted musician is also a jazz crooner and songwriter who has released four albums. Awards include Jacksonville's Musician of the Year 2008, Florida Album of the Year 2011, and most recently she was voted Best Local Classical Musician in Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay 2015.

Beginning Hebrew Class

Kabbalat Shabbat

Ruth Mauer leads a Beginners Hebrew class for “true” beginners to learn to read Hebrew and a little vocabulary with a focus on enriching your enjoyment of the Shabbat Evening Service. The classes combine an atmosphere of relaxation and good friendship along with an emphasis on serious learning. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:15- 6:30pm on February 3 and 10, and from 6:45 – 8:15 pm on February 17 and 24.

Carlebach Kabbalat Shabbat services feature melodies written by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Reb Shlomo, as he was known to his followers, was a teacher, composer, and singer who was known as “The Singing Rabbi” during his lifetime (1925 – 1994). Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he branched out to create his own style combining Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, public concerts, and song-filled synagogue services.

Pauline Rivkind Early Childhood Education Center (PRECEC) Dear CBI Family, January has been filled with lots of learning, laughter, and love at PRECEC. We have enjoyed learning about seat-belt safety, keeping kosher, and celebrating Tu B’Shvat with the residents of Menorah Manor and Philip Benjamin Towers. Our PTA meeting has filled us with many ideas and opportunities for the coming months. We are so excited! February is shaping up to be nothing less than fantastic. MERCAZ Scholarship Competition for Grades 7-12 2016 is the year for the biennial MERCAZ USA/MERCAZ-Canada/Women’s League Israel Scholarship Essay Contest. The information about the new round of the competition is available on the MERCAZ-Canada website, www.masortimercaz.ca. The MERCAZ USA,www.mercazusa.org, site links to it as well. Please share this information with all relevant groups with whom you are affiliated. The contest is open to grades 7-12. Scholarships can be saved for Conservative Movement affiliated trips to Israel, whether for 2016 or thereafter, so there’s no reason not to enter. There are five scholarships awarded: $1000, $600, $400, $250 x2, which can be used on any Conservative Movement Israel trip. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 1.

USY raises Tikun Olam in many different ways, and all of the money we raise goes to aid over fifty Jewish charities globally. Women’s League February Message, to the Women of CBI

A Wonderful Women’s League Shabbat Weekend

Each Shabbat, we hear from a few women who express a newly awakened interest in Women’s League activities. It is really nice to meet visitors, seasonal residents, and new and potential congregants in this way. Best of all, someone starts out as a new face and soon finds friends. We all like to come to a welcoming place. Welcome!

Thank you to all who planned, practiced, prepared, spoke, sang, and showed up to celebrate a successful Women’s League Shabbat 5776/2016. We enjoyed a lot of participation in the Kabbalat Shabbat service, and many congregants stayed for the tradition of a delicious, sociable “Got Shabbat?” dinner. In the morning, the Torah readers were all women, and most other parts of the service were led by women, or Rabbi Luski or Cantor Schultz. Since a baby-naming took place during the Shabbat service, we delighted in a tiny girl in her parents’ arms as she watched the readers, who included two of our brilliant high school students. I am sure that the baby, who was quiet and alert, heard their lovely voices on this special occasion

We are multi-generational and inclusive. We want it to be easy for you to take the step forward to show up and find a spot, next to one of us in the chapel, library, sanctuary, or social hall. It takes many to put together a Kiddush luncheon, to read and lead in prayer and study, or to help provide a personal touch at CBI. We support the synagogue however we can. You are one of us. See you in shul !
