LEADERSHIP PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

While most people know that I serve as President of the Board of Directors for this wonderful community, many of you may not know much about how I got here and my secular background. I was born and raised in Massachusetts until I was 14 at which time my family moved to Las Vegas, NV. Following my undergraduate work, I earned two Masters degrees, one in Clinical Psychology with an advanced certificate in trauma and abuse, and one in Business. I also hold post-graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching. There are many facets to my professional life including: serving as the Vice-President of the largest Dental Specialty Practice in the Southwest, facilitating extensive group and individual counseling at a premier inpatient treatment center in Arizona, acting as a professional development coach for executives along with providing health and wellness coaching for personal clients and I published my first book last year. Volunteering my time for our CBI community is truly a labor of love which started when I was asked to be part of the very first cohort of the CBI Adult Leadership Development program in 2013. Additionally, I have served on several committees, including numerous professional staff Search Committees, task forces, and I was honored to co-chair an annual Gala and a Comedy Night. My service on the CBI Board of Directors began in 2014. I have served as a general member of the Board and then transitioned onto the Executive Committee as “Member-at-Large, Secretary and Vice President.

To say it is an honor and privilege to now serve as your President would be an understatement. This past February 19, 2021 marked the end of my first year as president. While no one could have ever predicted the onset of Covid-19 one year ago along with the many challenges for our congregation, neither could we have imagined the incredible opportunities COVID-19 would provide to our Kehillah Kedosha. While there have been many wonderful alternatives created to enhance engagement during the pandemic, one of the challenges I have faced is the lack of opportunity to interact with my CBI family physically. While there are many virtual spaces to connect, I miss that more human faceto-face connection. At different times, I would be at services or events, getting to see familiar faces and having the opportunity to see “new to me” faces. Over the past three months, I have experienced my own encounter with COVID-19 and have not been able to be as visible in the virtual space as I would have desired. In the coming months, I plan to share some personal anecdotes about myself in an effort for us to get to know each other better. My husband Steve and I have been members of CBI since 2002 and have raised our 5 children here. Our children have attended Chanen Preschool, Haberkorn Religious School, Camp Stein and have been active in the youth group (BITY). We look forward to celebrating our youngest becoming Bar Mitzvah this August on our bima. I would absolutely love to hear from you and grab a virtual cup of coffee when schedules permit. LEADERSHIP CCEO BY ROBIN ROEDER Welcome to 2021! I hope you and your families are doing well and staying healthy! This past year was like no other that we have experienced as a community. I believe that although we were not able to be together physically, we have been able come through 2020 with new connection, through different ways of being together.

CLERGY CORNER BY RABBI MASON-BARKIN I believe it was the great sage – I mean - early childhood musician, who first said you “gotta shake, shake, shake your sillies out.” As we all have experienced over the last year, we are spending more time sitting, more time on screens, and more time with electronics. We are all feeling a little stir-crazy, and like we might all benefit from the chance to ‘shake our sillies out.’ I was practically giddy with excitement on Tu BiShvat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees, I worked with the Chanen Preschool teachers to create a fun and active Tu BiShvat activity to bring our ‘Jewish Arbor Day’ to life. How lucky we are to live in sunny Phoenix where the sun shines all winter long, and we can take advantage of these lovely days to gather safely outdoors – albeit with masks on and from six feet away.

I am so excited to introduce you to our new CBI publication - The ‫ חדשות‬News. The quarterly ‫ חדשות‬will take the place of the monthly bulletin. Our hope is that you find the ‫ חדשות‬informative and inspiring on all things CBI. From the three-month calendar to articles on current topics, teachings from our Clergy, spotlights on new and existing members, and so much more, our aim is to engage and bring together our sacred community in a more meaningful and informative way. We welcome your feedback, suggestions, and input as we start the next edition!

This past year as your Chief Communal and Executive Officer has been an honor and a privilege. I am truly humbled by your support of the All for One campaign and the CBI Cares program. We have supported each other and our community when we most needed it. I look forward to the time when we can all see each other in person and hug and schmooze again. Until then, sending virtual hugs and thoughts of good health and happiness. I am always available to take your call if you have something that you would like to discuss or share! #WEARECBI

Judaism, and Jewish holidays, are meant to be lived and enjoyed. They don’t happen on our screens, but in our hands, our minds, and whole bodies. We not only want to shake our sillies out, but move and groove to the beat of our Jewish year!

In the Chanen preschool community, children inspire friends, teachers, and rabbis too - to bring ancient tradition to life in new, fun, and meaningful ways. We are not just learning about what it means to be a part of Jewish culture and religion, we are doing it.

Out on the playground with generous distance between us, we began by being trees. Inspired by yoga (and the genius of Jamie Amor, creator of Cosmic Kids Yoga), we struck our very best tree poses. We were straight tall trees, and wobbly shaky trees. Our roots went deep to the ground, and our branches reached high to the sky. I guided the children through two ancient Talmudic tales about Honi the Circle Maker, a pious man whose strong connection to God and wonder about miracles of nature make him a popular Tu BiShvat icon. But instead of me simply telling the story, we created the story. We all drew circles around us with our fingers on the ground. We made a rainstorm by snapping and clapping. We all shouted to the heavens, and we all lay down on the ground pretending to sleep. We all balled ourselves into little seeds and then pretended to be trees that would grow, and grow, and grow,

Tu BiShvat was fun, but I can’t wait to find out what Jewish idea we will bring to life next. Will we reach our roots to the ground and our branches to the sky? Will we flicker our fingers like shabbat candles, or climb a mountain to reach the ten commandments? Jewish life is for all of us – for the littlest littles in our preschool, and for all of our parents and grandparents as well. I am so honored to shake my sillies out with this incredible, innovative, intergenerational community.

A COMMUNITY OF HEALING RABBI'S REFLECTIONS BY RABBI MASONBARKIN When Helene Harty Miracle’s brother, Dr. Matthew Harty, died tragically last Rosh Hashanah, Helene wanted to come to her community for support. “I needed to learn how to keep moving forward,” Helene explained. “I needed to get comfortable again in my own shoes.” While Helene found support from her clergy, friends and Shabbat services at Congregation Beth Israel, there was no designated space within our programs to process her grief. Instead, she found groups outside of our synagogue community to meet those needs. One year later, Helene came to me with an idea. The purpose of synagogue life is to be present for one another during the most challenging parts of our lives. Deep connections are formed around the experience of sharing our moments of trauma, loss and transition. We needed to find space to do so within the fold of our CBI community. Helene’s vision was to form a group that could lean on one another, and begin to move together as each participant walked through his or her own pain. Helene and I met with Amy Heims, Hospital Chaplain at Banner University. As a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Amy immediately understood our vision. Bringing her extensive experience in group facilitation and spiritual care she was the perfect person to help us bring this idea to fruition. Together, we designed the Shema Circle. Shema Circle: A place to listen, a place to be heard A part of CBI Cares, a part of the Hilton Family Welcome Home Project

Each week, we begin with this centering prayer: We enter this circle for Shema: We are sacred listeners; we are selfless presence. We are open: in mind and in heart. The circle starts with the gentle curve of own taking in, of breath, of story, and of trust. And continues with our own letting out. At it’s center, this circle is a place to be heard. We create space: and the Divine presence dwells between us. We listen, and we are heard. We are One. Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.

Our time together consists of checking in on individual challenges, in addition to discussing shared themes like: brokenness, loyalty, or healing. We incorporate music, meditation, and poetry – but the group truly runs on the sanctity of story. Cohort 2 of the Shema Circle has begun in March and continues through April. A supportive group for CBI members experiencing life transitions, losses, and difficult moments to share wisdom, stories, connection, and healing. As Jews, storytelling is central to our identity. The Shema Circle offers a place to tell our stories, to make sense of our lives through our tragedies, loneliness, joy and change. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves narrate and shape our lives - but sometimes to make our way through painful seasons, we need to change the way we understand our stories. We invite you to join our healing supportive group and begin to share and revise difficult parts of the story with love, confidentiality and hopefully a little laughter.

And as the group began, it became clear that even over zoom we are capable of meeting one another deeply at the heart of shared story. Both in the act of listening and the act of being heard we become closer: to one another, to our own healing, and to this grounding community.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT SAM BAKER

Sam Baker is 97 years old and has been a member of CBI for 16 years. His favorite CBI event was the Israel trip in 2015. He had never been and loved the trip with Rabbi and the CBI family. Born and raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Baker was the son of a cotton farmer. The family also grew cucumbers and dill plants in order to make dill pickles. As a boy, Baker recalls seeing very large caterpillars on the dill plants. The inspiration for one of his books came from the caterpillars that would eat the dill plants at his childhood home. As a child, Baker loved nature and participated in the Boy Scouts of America, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1939. His hometown of Clarksdale was home to a surprisingly thriving Jewish community when he was growing up. Since he was born on Shabbat, Baker’s parents had waited to fill out the birth certificate. It seems the nurse, unbeknownst to the family, wrote down Leonard as a placeholder. Baker was further surprised to find out the document listed his birthday as Aug. 16 rather than the 26. Sam believes that reading is so important. It is the foundation for learning and learning is the baseline for education. He says that "Get your education" They can take your money, but they can never take your education. This was a saying from his mother who lived through the great depression. Sam cant wait to see his CBI family again in person and looks forward to being able to see his friends and tell the stories of his life. A PRAYER FOR VACCINATION

An excerpt from "The Longest Shabbat" By Rabbi Sara Mason Barkin

The cloud is lifting. Not all at once, and not with any kind of certainty. But with a corner here, and a ripple there. A light breeze. A cover of stars. A holy presence. We have done the impossible this year. We have met impossible sadness and impossible fear and impossible loneliness and impossible joy and impossible closeness and impossible resilience. For the Israelites, this moment is the result of a full year of doing the impossible. They crossed the sea. They witnessed thunderbolts and lightning at the foot of Mount Sinai. And now, the Israelites are building a desert home for God made out of dolphin skins and acacia wood. The Israelites live now, each day, in the shadow of the tabernacle that they built with their very own hands. And with this new normal, the burden of the midbar, of the narrow place, begins to lift. What if you thought of it — asked the poet — As the Jews consider the sabbath? The most sacred of times. We could measure this year in the challahs we baked and the Livestreams we watched. The glasses of wine we shared on the couch, the yahrzeits we typed into the comments. The holy moments we made in our home tabernacles. The nostalgia for what was. The appreciation for what is. The worrying about what will be. Certainty won’t resume in one fell swoop. This cloud lifts slowly. Gently. Cautiously. Tenderly. And like a Shabbat that lasts for a year, the stars that signal its end will come out one by one. This Havdalah, this change, this adjustment to ‘regular,’ might be twice as long as the sabbath itself. We, too, will come out one by one. When we are ready. When the time is right.

JOSHUA GULINSON

Joshua Gulinson will become a Bar Mitzvah on February 13. Joshua is the son of Annette and Scott Gulinson and has two sisters, Julia and Jenna. Joshua is in 8th grade at Mountain Sky Middle School where his favorite subject is Math. He enjoys playing Basketball, Gaming and working with animals. Joshua worked with the Rescue League fostering kittens for his Mitzvah Project and is a member of Boys Team Charity.

Olivia is in 7th grade at Explorer Middle School where her favorite subject is English. She enjoys dance, baking and art. Olivia was very close with her great grandmother Alma Hourvitz and grandmother Jackie Feinstein who have passed as well as her grandparents Bobby and Robin Kaplan.

LARA KARIN & DANIEL CITRON We are Karin and Daniel Citron and we are excited to be CBI members! Karin is a dental hygienist and Daniel is a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. We recently moved to Desert Ridge (Fireside) in August and Daniel is stationed at Luke Air Force Base. We are college sweethearts and met as freshmen in the dorms at San Diego State University over ten years ago. Karin is originally from San Diego and Daniel is from the San Francisco Bay Area and grew up at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. Some of our hobbies include cooking recipes together, playing piano, tennis, exercising, and hiking. We gave birth to our first child, Ariella, in June 2020 and excited she will be starting preschool at Chanen this upcoming fall.

DESMOND & ROXANNE REIS Roxy grew up in Lakewood, CA and Desmond was born and raised in Phoenix. We got together in 2015, and moved in together shortly after so Desmond could finish his undergraduate at NAU. Currently, Desmond works as a

substance use counselor and is a graduate student at NAU to receive his Master's in Counseling. Roxy works in manufacturing and process engineering. We started our journey in Judaism together when we moved back to Phoenix in 2018, and chose CBI as our home as we worked through our conversion process.

JOSH R. KAY & CAYLA WEISS Josh is born and raised in Paradise Valley, AZ. Cayla moved to Arizona 3 years ago to pursue her master's in teaching after spending a year teaching in Isreal. Cayla grew up in Buffalo, NY. Cayla and Josh got engaged during quarantine ,as well as adding a

new four-legged member to their family named Molly. They decided to join CBI due to Josh's previous relationship with Rabbi Kahn. Cayla loves to work out, spin on the her bike, and do pilates. Josh loves to play basketball, cook and work out. They are both interested in all things Isreal and giving back to the community. Cayla works in home health medical sales, whille Josh works technology. Josh and Cayla are excited to be CBI members and begin their life as a married couple.

A message from the Chanen Preschool By Stacy Rosenthal Hi Chanen Families, I want you to think about the first time you looked into your child’s eyes. Remember the feeling when your gaze met theirs and it was as if there was no one else in the world. Time a space became irrelevant as you studied each other intently. Studies show that infants as young as two days old prefer looking at faces which gaze back at them. During the pandemic, our students have looked at nothing but their teachers’ eyes as a clue to the expressions occurring under our masks. If your child is old enough, you may have had the experience of your toddler literally grabbing your face to get you to pay attention to what they have to say. We are busy. We are exhausted. We are going on one year of being the center of our children’s universe. But here’s the thing. This too will pass and your children will begin to play with others outside your bubble. They will find opportunities to explore the world and perhaps you will look back longingly to a time when they shared long gazes with you in your pandemic cocoon. I encourage you to capture this moment while you still can. In gazing into your child’s eyes, you may see the reflection of your soul.

At Congregation Beth Israel’s Camp Chanen, your camper ages 8 weeks- entering 3rd grade, will laugh and play on the Splash Pad, create beautiful projects during Art, participate in Yoga, and sing during Music and Movement. Debbie Friedman Tribute Concert by CBI To commemorate the life and music of Debbie Friedman, Cantor Ettinger produced an intimate virtual concert called “Dear Debbie” featuring 11 cantors, soloists and rabbis from across the Phoenix area. Each participant chose a song that was meaningful to their own life experience and wrote a personal letter to Debbie explaining how she influenced them and why this particular song was chosen. The ensemble was joined by Debbie’s sister, Cheryl Friedman, who shared a personal from Debbie herself which she had written to the Torah. The virtual concert has been seen by more than 1100

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST MEGILLAH

Purim Skits and Karaoke Concert by CBI For Purim this Year, five outspoken and witty CBI youth retold the Purim story from their point of view, which was then turned into a 12 minute Purim Shpiel video called “Kids Say The Darndest Megillah.” The shpiel, created by Cantor Ettinger, featured Phoenix comedy troupe, “Pizza Party” who took the events and comedic lines spoken by the children and re-enacted them in ancient Persia while incorporating many of the outrageously funny ideas that were shared and improvised. David the Dino and the Shabbam Jam Crew hung with all our CBI families to celebrate the birthday of the trees during our special Shabbam Jam “Tu Bishvat Style” Tot Shabbat! We were joined by our special guest artist in residence, Jason Mesches who wrote the Shabbas Shake along with many other well-known Jewish children's songs. We got to sing, dance, jump, hear stories and have “A Whole Lotta Challah!”

The Allan J. Flader Community-Wide DriveThrough Purim Parade The Allan J Flader Community-Wide Purim celebration was a little different this year. In place of our usual carnival, The J offered a firstever drive-through Purim Parade. Entertainment included BMX Bike Stunts, Clowns, Stilt walkers, Aerialists, and much more!

We celebrated the wedding of Q and U with our Pre K classes. For those of you not aware of this Chanen tradition, each spring we celebrate Q’s and U’s teamwork to create words like quick and quail. More than that, we celebrate the importance of teamwork in every area of our school. Parents, teachers, students – we work together as a team to create a warm and loving community.
