Meaning of the CBHS Lewisham Crest The Central Cross represents the spiritual nature of the School, with the star and rays of light carrying the message that Christ is the Light of the World. The Celtic Cross reminds us of the Irish background of the Christian Brothers, an order founded by Edmund Rice, which traces its beginnings back to the schools for the poor youth of Ireland in the early 19th century.

The open book at the top stands for teaching and learning. The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha and omega, tell us that all true learning begins and ends with God. The scroll crowning the crest carries the motto of the School – Conanti Corona, which means ‘A Crown to the one who Strives’. The school name and location on the lower scroll complete the crest.

The crown of eternal life – and happiness and peace – can be achieved through cooperation of all sections of the school family: pupils present and past, Families young and old, teachers religious and lay. Study, caring for each other and professional guidance all help in the ‘crowning’ of our boys.

Patrick Ambrose Treacy On November 21st 1868, Brother Patrick Ambrose Treacy arrived in Melbourne with three companions to establish a school of the Irish Christian Brothers. By the time he returned to Ireland in 1920 as an Assistant to the Superior General of his Order, he established 29 schools in Australia and New Zealand.

The site on which the Treacy Building stands today, together with a residence for a Community of Brothers, was purchased by Brother Treacy in 1889. The ground floor of this building was built during 1890 and in the early months of 1891. The first High School classes came here in the third term of that same year.

Welcome CBHS Lewisham Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham is a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition for students from Years 5 to 12. The school, which commenced in 1891, is owned by the Christian Brothers and governed by Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA). The School Leadership Team, by way of collaborative leadership, manages the school with ultimate responsibility lying with the Principal.

In carrying on the tradition and values of the Christian Brothers, the school has a particular commitment to the promotion of education for justice, to personal excellence, to the development of leadership and to the mutual involvement of the individual and the community. The development of team membership and spirit is actively encouraged. This commitment is reflected in all aspects of the life of the school. We believe that education enriches and empowers the individual, and that it is a continuous process that reaches beyond schooling.

The Christian Brothers understand that they are called as Brothers to form Gospel communities through which their principal mission of evangelisation is to be attained. Through the schools, the Christian Brothers have a privileged opportunity to create centres of evangelisation of youth. In all that they do, the Brothers endeavour to achieve communion with and among students, Families, teachers, school staff, ex-students, the Church and the wider community.

The CBHS School Board, acting within the spirit and bounds of its Constitution, is the embodiment of collaborative government of the school. The Board provides the means by which the mission of the Christian Brothers, the obligations to society and best management practices are given witness in the formation of policies for all areas of school life.

The Christian Brothers are the trustees of Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham. They govern the school through the Council and Board of Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA), which in turn appoints an Executive Director of the EREA, vested with the responsibility of legal and canonical oversight of Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham.

The Principal is delegated by the Executive Director with specific authorities and powers to conduct and manage the activities of the school. As educational leader and Chief Executive of the school, the Principal is responsible for the maintenance of the Catholic ethos within the Edmund Rice tradition, the development of curriculum and method of instruction, student care, staff management and development, relationships with the local community, administration of physical resources and the overall growth of the school as an Edmund Rice Community of Evangelisation. The Principal is guided by the Edmund Rice Charter in his endeavours to develop CBHS Lewisham as an authentic School in the tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers.

Members of the wider school community such as the School Board, the School Leadership Team and the staff, all support the Principal in leading and managing the school. The Principal is a member of the CBHS Board.

CBHS Lewisham draws its students from a wide geographical area as well as a large number of multicultural groups. With such a mix of cultures, the curriculum is evolving, within the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements, to meet the broad range of student needs. Much attention is focused on assisting students to success in external examinations.

At the same time the school is utilizing the assistance of such testing supports as NAPLAN and High School Certificate examinations to build up clearer student profiles. The school continues to develop its Diverse Learning division for students considered at risk or those with special needs and continues to evaluate its Reporting system, its Pastoral Care and Student Support system.

The unique nature of CBHS Lewisham community is seen in the richness of its multicultural diversity, the energetic Families’ Forum, the school cultural and musical opportunities – School Musical, Band, Debating, Metropolitan Catholic Colleges (MCC) sport. For a school with such a strong and illustrious history over its 129 years, there is ongoing re-development of the site in keeping with today’s requirements.

Facilities The School aims to provide facilities that ensure all students have the opportunity to study the wide range of courses available in rapidly developing curriculum today. In addition to the normal classrooms, the School has six equipped science laboratories, computer rooms, technology rooms and facilities for art, music and drama. The Healy Hall as well as the Treacy Centre cater for larger gatherings of students and Family meetings. 2008 saw the opening of the Br Julian McDonald Multi-Purpose Centre and the Waterford Learning Centre. In January 2009 Hospitality was offered for the first time in the state of the art hospitality facility which was formerly the Brothers’ Residence. The Treacy Centre was totally renovated into one of the most modern multi-purpose areas. These new buildings and resources improve the learning opportunities for CBHS Lewisham students. There is the usual variety of digital and audio-visual facilities available to supplement lessons in all areas of the curriculum.

The School is endowed with a beautiful chapel which seats 150 students. During the year, Mass is held at various times for students and staff. Full school Masses are held in the Br Julian McDonald Centre.

School Hours and Attendance The School operates on a five period day with a 10-day cycle requiring students to be in attendance all days from 8.40 a.m. to 3.15 p.m. Thursday is the school sports day with normal classes until 12.15 p.m. and sport during the afternoon. Finishing time on Thursday is 2.45 p.m. Regular attendance is necessary for both academic progress and to satisfy the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements for the award of the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate.

CBHS Lewisham Sentral Family Portal and accessing the Absences button with reason of absence Any incident of late arrival or early departure must be explained by a note from Families which students must take to Student Services. Appointments with doctors, dentists, etc. should be made outside school hours where possible.

Overseas travel during the school year by family’s needs to be approved by the Principal via a written request. Families are strongly discouraged from taking students out of school during term time, as this can impact heavily on a student’s study. It is understood, that on occasions family and other urgent matters necessitate it. The mere opportunity for a vacation at off peak times if not, however, sufficient reason to withdraw students from classes during term time.

Pastoral Care and Homerooms The School places a strong emphasis on student care and welfare. Students in each Year are assigned to Homeroom groups based on houses, each of which operates under the care and guidance of a member of the team of teachers appointed to that Year. Students are encouraged to seek assistance and advice from their Homeroom teacher if they encounter any problem or difficulty.

Families are encouraged to maintain close contact with the Homeroom teacher and Pastoral Coordinator. They are normally the initial point of contact when Families are in need of assistance.

Br B.M. Gartland House Competition The School over the past few years has emphasised the importance of the House competition.

The house system is also the main structure of Pastoral Care and discipline for the school. Each student is assigned to a House on their arrival to the school. Students will remain in this House until the end of Year 12. Students are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the school as this will result in points being awarded to their House.

A Pastoral Coordinator is appointed to each of the eight Houses: Brady, Gallagher, Healy, Kearney, Magee, O’Neill, Treacy and Wynne. It is the responsibility of each student to contribute to the success of their House through the variety of activities which are planned throughout the year. This Pastoral Coordinator is the key person for students in terms of discipline and pastoral care.

The House competition is an integral part in the building of school spirit and the enhancing of the school history and traditions.

All Houses compete for the Br B.M. Gartland Cup which the winning House receives on Announcement Day towards the end of Term 3. The current reigning House Champion is O’Neill House.

Student absences that have not be reported to the school by 9.30 a.m. will be communicated to families by SMS.

Reports Year 7 – 11 students receive an Interim Report at the end of Term 1. This gives you an early indication of how students are progressing in the new academic year.

Year 5 to 10 students receive a school report at the end of each semester. This is coupled with Family/Student/Teacher meetings that provide the opportunity to discuss student progress with their teacher/s.

Year 11 in addition to the Family/Student/Teacher meeting, receive a Semester One report. A final Year 11 report is published for each Year 11 student at the commencement of Term 4.

Year 12 students receive a report at the commencement of Term 2 and this is followed-up by a Family/Student/Teacher meeting shortly afterwards. Year 12 students receive their final school report at the end of August following their HSC Trial examinations.

Dates for Family/Student/Teacher meetings are on the School Calendar and instructions on how to book these will be sent home at the relevant time.

Use of the School Diary Every student is issued with a school diary in which it is expected he writes his homework and assignments and organises his schoolwork. Families are requested to sign the diary once a week. The Student Diary is counter-signed weekly by his Homeroom Teacher.

There is space on each week of the school diary for both teacher and family comments. This is a simple and relatively informal way to communicate with teachers.

Communication with Teachers Families are strongly encouraged to contact the school to discuss students’ progress whenever they feel the need arises. It is important, however, to ensure that you are communicating with the appropriate person best able to help you. Below is the protocol for occasional verbal communications with the school. Use this guide when the need arises to contact the school.

For general matters the first point of contact with the school is the student’s Homeroom Teacher. They see the students each school day and is charged with the responsibility of overseeing their everyday pastoral care.

For subject specific matters the first point of contact should be the student’s class teacher. It makes sense, then, that you and are fully informed of the names of his homeroom and class teachers.

Please understand that teachers are not able to come to the phone or to meet families without an appointment as they are mostly likely teaching. We ask that you contact them via email and arrange a time to meet.

When matters cannot be resolved at the homeroom or classroom level, teachers will be able to refer you on to the relevant Coordinator.

• Pastoral Coordinators deal with pastoral matters relating to their pastoral group.

• KLA Coordinators deal with subject specific issues.

• AP – Curriculum, Mrs Monica O’Brien together with the AP – Pedagogy, Mr Keith Page, supervise the KLA Coordinators. You may be directed to Mrs O’Brien for student entries for the Higher School Certificate or his subject choices. You may be directed to Mr Page on matters relating to Pedagogy.

• AP – Primary, Mr Mark Woodbury, supervises Years 5 and 6 students and you may be directed to Mr Woodbury on matters such as curriculum matters, sporting matters or his pastoral needs.

• AP – Pastoral, Mr Chris Kidd, supervises the Pastoral Coordinators team and you may be directed to Mr Kidd on matters such pastoral needs or welfare.

• AP – Identity, Mr Dan Valencic, supervises the Justice & Peace Coordinator and you may be directed to Mr Valencic regarding the culture of the school as a place of faith and learning.

For matters relating to sport the below teachers will be able to assist, for matters relating to PDHPE please contact the student’s classroom teacher.

• AP – Primary, Mr Mark Woodbury supervises Years 5 and 6 sport • Sports Coordinator, Mr David Mamo, can answer questions related to Representative and MCC sporting programs • Sports Coordinator, Mrs Deb Cummins, can answer questions related to internal school sport

All enquiries regarding musical programmes at the school, including tuition, should be directed to Music Coordinator, Mr Carlos Munoz. The School hosts a range of musical ensembles including School Choirs, Junior Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. These ensembles cater for a wide range of student ability.

Social Justice and outreach programs, across the school, are organised by the Justice & Peace Coordinator, Mr Kurt Bartelme For information regarding Debating and Public Speaking competition times, dates and other related information, please speak with the Coordinator, Mr Paul McCallum Student Services deals with all matters related to applications for School Opal Cards for use on public transport to and from school.

The Fees Office should be contacted for questions relating to school fees and to setup payment plans, if required, they are contactable via accounts@cbhslewisham.nsw.edu.au Application for extended leave during term time must be made in writing to the Principal. As per NSW Government requirements if the leave is for a period of more than 10 days an Application for Extended Leave must be completed by the family and is to be returned along with relevant travel document such as ticket or itinerary. These forms can be collected from and returned to Student Services For highly sensitive or private matters relating to overall enrolment at the school, you may wish to speak to the Principal directly, please contact the school on 8585 1744 and ask to speak to the Principal’s Secretary to make an appointment.

On other matters, our experienced and helpful office staff will direct you to the relevant member of staff.

Religious Education and Liturgy Religious Education is a major priority within the School and all classes have set Religious Education programs and lessons. Each class is started with a Prayer and there are frequent opportunities for all students to participate in School and class masses, sacramental programs, liturgies and prayer sessions.

Both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day masses are held each year and are an opportunity for Families to gather with Staff and Students in Prayer and celebrate these important occasions.

Dates for these events are published in the school calendar on our website.

At other times during the year, the staff arrange Liturgies and Masses and other visitations to the chapel for students to enhance the Religious Education program.

Sport All students have the opportunity to represent the School in the various sporting competitions run by the Metropolitan Catholic Colleges Association. The sport areas include cricket, swimming, tennis, touch football, golf, squash, rugby league, soccer, volleyball, basketball, athletics and cross-country. There is also a wide variety of internal sports available to students as part of the regular Thursday afternoon program. Students in Year 7 participate in a sports program designed to increase their skills and foster cohesion and friendship. Students are encouraged to try out for one or more of the MCC Representative teams.

Students who have the necessary ability to represent the School in sport are expected to do so in a manner that demonstrates a spirit and enthusiasm in contributing to the efforts of the whole community. Such an attitude is also regarded as a necessary condition of enrolment.

Co-Curricular Activities During the year a large variety of activities is available to students. These include retreats, camps, excursions, community service work, musical activities and the like which are aimed at creating important development experiences. It is a “Condition of Enrolment� that students participate in these activities when required.

It is an expectation that every student seeks to participate in at least ONE co-curricular activity per year.

Debating and Public Speaking In recent years the School has enjoyed a fine record in the areas of debating and public speaking. English courses in each Year provide opportunities for all students to participate at their own level. In addition, the School enters teams in the various inter-school competitions and all students have the opportunity of representing the School in these activities.

Students who have the necessary ability to represent the School in Debating/Public Speaking are expected to do so in a manner that demonstrates a spirit and enthusiasm in contributing to the efforts of the whole community. Such an attitude is also regarded as a necessary condition of enrolment.

Musical The School produces a musical bi-annually. This incorporates students and staff from the Drama, Music, Art and English departments. Students who study music and who are in the choir are also involved. Any student with a particular gift, talent or interest in this area is encouraged to participate.

Transport and School Opal Cards Free transport is available on Government trains, buses and private buses where students live more than 2.0 kilometres (radial distance) from the School, measured on a radius from the centre of the school site. This is a Government authorized guideline. Further details will be available at the Information Evening.

Parking Around School Families are reminded to take extra caution when dropping or collecting students from school.

Signage indicates that The Boulevarde is a drop off and pick up point. Denison Road is a bus zone. Families are requested NOT to use Denison Road as a drop off or pick up point. Regular patrols by the local Council and Police ensure that both streets are maintained as safely as is possible.

Students Driving CBHS acknowledges that senior students are legally permitted to hold a NSW Driver Licence.

Under instructions from the Inner West Council in NSW (DA Determination No. 200300504), senior students are prohibited from driving to and from school.

CBHS will continue to encourage seniors to use public transport.

From time to time each academic year, CBHS will inform and/or remind students and families of the Council Determination.

Medication If it is necessary for a student to bring any form of medication to School, he must also have an explanatory note signed by the family giving full details. This note must be presented to the Homeroom teacher and/or Pastoral Coordinator and then carried by the student. Students who fail to follow this procedure will have the medication confiscated until the families are notified.

Sick Bay Please do not send sick children to school as we do not have the facilities to look after them.

Please make sure that your mobile number kept up to date at Student Services. We must be able to contact you if a student becomes ill at school or is involved in an accident. No medical treatment can be given by the school. If a student cannot return to class due to illness or injury, families will be contacted to collect the student from school as soon as possible.

Canteen The School has an excellent canteen providing a good range of healthy food for both students and staff. The canteen is open before school as well as morning recess and lunchtime. Price lists will be provided to Families at the commencement of each school year. Students will have the option of pre-ordering their lunch.

Parents & Friends’ Association The contribution of families to the life of the School is always highly valued. The Parents & Friends’ Association plays a vital role within the School community through their support in pastoral, social and financial areas. All families are strongly urged to assist in developing the community spirit of the School by becoming active members of this Association. Meetings are held once per term.

Old Boys’ Association The School has a strong Old Boys’ network. The Old Boys’ Association meets regularly for social activities and is always happy to hear news from our Old Boys.

Excursions Students and families are informed of excursion details through individual subject letters. All permission notes must be returned to the individual subject teacher. Students who fail to comply with these procedures will not attend the excursion and will be required to do work at school.

School Expectations An important reason for choosing Christian Brothers’ High School, Lewisham is the pastoral care which enables students to grow and learn in a safe and secure environment. The School is proudly a Catholic school which has a code for living based on the values of the Gospels and the teachings of Jesus.

We aim to develop young men of integrity and compassion who will become valued members of the community. The CBHS Lewisham Code of Conduct helps us set and maintain our expectations about behavioural standards for all students.

Neatness Policy Students are expected to present themselves in a neat and tidy fashion at all times. Personal grooming should include being clean-shaven and hair that is clean, combed and in a style that does not draw attention to the individual. No part of the haircut should be below Blade 2 cut.

The definition of appropriate grooming is at the discretion of the Assistant Principal – Pastoral.

Level System Students whose behaviour and level of achievement are not satisfactory are placed on a system of levels. The Level System provides close monitoring of a student’s work a week at a time, with an appraisal of progress at the end of each weekly monitoring period. The Level System is designed to assist a boy in the specific challenges regarding his behaviour or academic progress that have been posed to him by his teachers.

Achievement Awards The Merit and Demerit Check Every student has a merit/demerit section for each week of his School Diary.

Teachers and other members of staff may give students a merit at any time at their discretion.

Merits may be for good work (“Academic”) or good behaviour (“Conduct”) for both inside and beyond the classroom.

A Year 7 – 10 students who gains three demerits in any one week will be placed on Monday formal detention.

At the weekly merit and demerit check, a Year 7 – 10 students who gains three merits in any one week will be issued with a Congratulations Card by his Homeroom Teacher, presented by the Homeroom class.

Congratulations Cards A student who gains three merits in any one week will be issued with a Congratulations Card by his Homeroom Teacher, presented before the Homeroom class. Students collect these cards.

A student who has not otherwise achieved a Congratulations Card and who has no demerits, in his Diary for three weeks in a row receives a Congratulation Card.

Any demerit for the week will mean that a student cannot gain a Congratulations Card for that week.

Principal’s Certificate When a Year 7 – 10 student has five Merit Awards, they can apply to the Pastoral Coordinator for a Principal’s Certificate. The Principal’s Certificate would be an excellent addition to any student’s resume. At a Whole School Assembly, the student receiving the award will be presented to the Principal by the Pastoral Coordinator to receive the award.

Participation Awards In addition to the progressive award system, there is an opportunity at any time for students to earn a Participation Award from any teacher, in recognition of their contribution to some aspect of school life. Participation Awards, Waterford Awards, Sustained Merit Awards, and Principal’s Awards, earn points towards House Points Competitions.

Awards System 3 Merits = Congratulations Card 5 Congratulations Cards = Sustained Merit Award 5 Sustained Merit Awards = Principal’s Award 3 Principal’s Awards = Bronze Medallion Subsequent Principal’s Award x 3 = Silver Medallion Subsequent Principal’s Award x 3 = Gold Medallion Students can accumulate their cards and awards from year to year.

Detentions Families will always be informed of these matters and invited to assist in overcoming the problem. Should families wish to discuss any matters relating to a detention they should contact the Coordinator who issued the detention.

• Some lunch-time or recess detentions are held by individual classroom teachers.

Families will be notified of this with comment written in the student’s diary.

• Formal detentions for more persistent behaviour are organised through the Pastoral Coordinator or KLA Coordinator and are conducted on after school, and require 24 hours’ notice given to Families.

• Suspension, either from school or from class, is used for serious offences or for continuing failure to meet the School’s expectations in behaviour.

Courses of Study and Requirements The curriculum offered at Christian Brothers’ High School, Lewisham meets all the requirements and guidelines set down by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). The courses of study in operation are constantly evaluated and updated by teachers under the supervision of the Assistant to the Principal (Curriculum) at the School.

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) Curriculum All students in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) follow a common pattern of courses. As of 2019, both Years 7 and 8 will study English, Religious Education and HSIE (History / Geography) as an integrated and cross-curricular unit called RISE (Relational, Integrated, Student-centred Education) and will see students completing both cross-curricular teaching and learning tasks and assessments that involve content and skills from the three core subjects of English, Religious Education and HSIE. All Years 7 and 8 students will also study the following subjects: Mathematics, Music, Science, Technology, Visual Arts and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. In addition, Year 8 students must also study one Language, either French or Italian.

Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) Curriculum During this stage of their curriculum at Christian Brothers’ High School, Lewisham, all students must follow courses in Religious Education and the Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), Science as well as Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. In addition, they will elect to study a number of courses taken from the other Key Learning Areas: • Human Society and its Environment • Technology and Applied Studies including Computing Studies – (TAS) • Creative and Performing Arts including Music, Visual Arts and Drama – (CA) • Languages other than English (LOTE) • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

For those elective areas the School has implemented changes directed at providing all students with a greater and more realistic choice and more flexibility within their study program for Years 9 and 10.

Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) Curriculum All students studying Years 11 and 12 at the School will be eligible for the HSC provided they meet all requirements of the School and the NSW Education Standards Authority. The only HSC mandated requirement is that students study 2 Units of English. The School requires that each student in Years 11 and 12 study either one or two Units of Studies of Religion or Catholic Studies.

While a majority of our students undertake a program of study that prepares them for university, we also have a group of students who choose subjects based on a desire to go to TAFE and/or work straight after Year 12. We offer a very wide range of courses at the senior level which we conduct if sufficient numbers of students choose to study them. These include the Vocational Education courses offered – Information Technology, Hospitality and Fitness.

Where appropriate other Vocational Education courses are outsourced at TAFE or Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College.

A process of subject selection takes place from about March onwards when students are in Year 10.

Record of School Achievement (RoSA) Mandatory Studies – Years 7 – 10 The RoSA is a cumulative credential for students who leave school before completing their HSC. It was introduced for school leavers in Year 10 in 2012.

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements for the award of the RoSA include Mandatory Courses that students must study between Year 7 and Year 10 for the “indicative hours” indicated. These indicative hours are the minimum hours expected to yield the “outcomes” described in each syllabus for the relevant courses.

Bring your own device Christian Brothers’ High School, Lewisham is a BYOD school. We ask that each student brings their own laptop in order to engage with teaching and learning in the classroom. Students will be taught to use their laptop as a learning tool, in combination with other learning tools such as physical textbooks and workbooks. Teaching and learning at Lewisham recognises that computers and the Internet will be an important part of a student’s life, and that students must be taught how to use these tools in an appropriate manner.

A common question from Families is ‘What type of laptop should we provide?’. What follows is a list of recommended laptops that will work best with our School network. If you’re a student was at the School in Years 5 and 6, he will be able to use the same laptop in Year 7. If you are new to the School in Year 7, or you need to purchase a new laptop, please ensure that it fulfils the requirements provided.

Students are required to purchase and bring their own laptop and bring it to School every day.

The laptops listed below are recommended for students. The laptops below will also meet the requirements for the online NAPLAN and HSC Minimum Standards Testing.

Android based laptops, such as Chromebooks, will not work on the School network. Please do not purchase or bring one to School.

MacBooks are laptops that run Apple’s own operating system. They provide good battery life, and are lightweight.

Anti-Virus Anti-virus software should not be running on a laptop when at School. The School runs extensive firewall, anti-spam and anti-virus software and hardware that will protect your laptop when on the School network. This protection will clash with anti-virus software running on your laptop.

Homework The School has an expectation that all students will undertake an organised program of home study to supplement their classroom lessons. This may be of various forms including set exercises, assignment, revision, reading, a minimum of preparation for oral presentations, etc.

It is recommended that Year 7 students spend 1 hour per night on these activities. This time would increase as the student progresses through the Years of secondary school. Year 11 students would be expected to spend 2.5 – 3 hours per night on these activities. Families are asked to assist by regularly checking that this homework is being done.

All set items for homework will be written in the student’s School Diary. This diary will be issued in the first days of the school year. These diaries are checked regularly by teachers and are often used to relay messages to Families. Any comments from teachers need to be signed by Families. Families are also asked to sign the diary on a weekly basis. Any student who loses his diary must inform his Pastoral Coordinator immediately, before a new purchase of replacement is made.

Reporting All students in Years 5 – 10 receive comprehensive A – E reports for all courses studied at the end of each Semester (half-year) that is July and December. Year 11 students receive a report after the First Semester Examinations. Students from Years 5 – 10 also receive Interim Reports

in Term 1. Families and students are required to attend meetings twice per year with Homeroom/Pastoral Care teachers discuss Reports. Families can view reports in Sentral Portal.

Families are always encouraged to contact the School if they wish to discuss any aspect of these reports or a student’s progress in general.

Family/Teacher Meetings Family/Teacher meetings are held for all Years. A Family/Teacher Interview Day will be held early in Term 2. This is seen as a very important event and attendance of all families is expected.

There is a follow-up Family/Teacher meeting early in Term 3. If a family member is unable to attend due to unexpected extreme circumstances, a courtesy note to the Pastoral Coordinator explaining the situation is expected. Interviews could be arranged at a later date.

Interviews with particular teachers may be arranged at any time during the year by contacting the School and making an appointment.

Gifted and Talented Program The school has a program to identify a student who has a gift or a talent, by Family referral, teacher observation and referral, general observable traits. The program is aimed at intellectual gifts and talents rather than gifts of the Spirit. The program goes beyond the differentiation of the curriculum that occurs in the general classroom. The program, while flexible, focuses on the more academically abled reasoning.

Enrichment Programs Students who are talented in the performing arts are well accommodated at the School.

Opportunities exist for individual tuition for a number of musical instruments as well as school dramatic productions. Music is compulsory for all students in Stage 4 and is offered as an elective in Stages 5 and 6.

Enrolment into Years 11 and 12 All students at Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham wishing to continue into Senior Study will be required to formally re-apply for enrolment at the end of Year 10.
