ON THE COVER CBFNC’s Red Latina Ministry hosted women from across the state at its 2020 Women’s Conference at First-Huntersville.
TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE,
because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
CBFNC’s name is comprised of four key concepts: Cooperative, Baptist, Fellowship and North Carolina. Each of these concepts is central to our identity and our way of following Jesus. Because we are Baptists who value freedom and autonomy, we have to work at the first concept, cooperation. For Baptists, cooperation doesn’t come naturally. It requires focus, effort and faithfulness. In fact, I believe that for Baptists, cooperation is a spiritual discipline.
With Christ at the center, everything we do as CBFNC seeks to honor both freedom and cooperation. In this 2020 Annual Report we celebrate the cooperative nature of our fellowship.
As you review the numbers, pictures, stories and testimonies, look for the ways CBFNC exhibits the spirit of Christ-centered cooperation. Even if you personally weren’t engaged in a particular ministry, your support of our fellowship—financially, through prayer, or by advocating for CBFNC in your church or relational network—is an expression of the spirit of cooperation.
Three items are worth highlighting here:
STAFF CHANGES
– Two of our long-time staff members, Linda Jones and Rick Jordan, retired. Though we were sad to say good-bye, we blessed them as they began a new chapter of life focused on family and other goals. We were pleased to welcome three new folks to our staff team: Scott Hudgins as director of our Lilly-funded initiative, Helping Pastors Thrive; Tracy Davis as administrative assistant; and Jamie Rorrer as communications director. In addition, Mary Kaylor, who had joined the CBFNC staff the prior year as administration manager, began a new role as associate coordinator, with a focus on congregational and missional resources.
COVID-19 RESPONSE
– In March, our lives, like the rest of the world, were turned upside-down by the global coronavirus pandemic and its resulting disease, Covid-19. The pandemic forced us to cancel the 2020 Annual Gathering. Our staff and volunteer leaders immediately pivoted from our normal ministry offerings to provide a robust portfolio of ministries focused on coronavirus response.
RACIAL JUSTICE
– As an outgrowth of the decade-long work of CBFNC’s Racial Equity and Justice Team, a feature of the 2020 Annual Gathering was to have been an expanded workshop on systemic racism led by the Racial Equity Institute. In response to several high-profile acts of racial violence, culminating in the murder of George Floyd, we were able to offer this training online, as well as other resources on racism.
Cooperation The Spirit of
Thank you for the many ways you exhibit the spirit of Christ-centered Baptist Cooperation through CBFNC—including your financial support. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, we need each other and are much stronger and effective together than we could ever be alone.

MINISTERS & CHURCHES EQUIP
AS ONE OF OUR CORE MINISTRY PRIORITIES,
CBFNC equips ministers and churches by supporting and strengthening ministry leaders and the congregations they serve. We seek to equip ministers and churches in three primary ways:
The numbers that follow reflect how CBFNC collaborated with ministers and churches in the last year to better equip them for ministry.
MINISTRY JOB BOARD
• Ministerial Transitions: Assisting ministers and churches navigating changes in ministry placement and employment.
• Ministerial Resources: Providing resources for ministers to grow spiritually and professionally, including the Lilly-funded Helping Pastors Thrive initiative.
• Church Resources: Developing a network of resource providers, sister churches and ministry partners that can respond to congregational needs.

Funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, CBFNC’s Helping Pastors Thrive ministry officially launched in 2019. The program’s three initiatives focus on three distinct vocational stages, which include:
• New Pastors Cohort for pastors in their first three years of post-seminary congregational ministry;
• Workshop Retreats for Pastors for early and mid-career pastors navigating the complex challenges of ministry in established congregations;
• Pastor-in-Residence Program for late career pastors who are nearing retirement and desire dedicated time away from their ministries to reflect on the meaning of their vocation, to prepare for their final years of pastoral service, and to share what they have learned with younger pastors.

“EMBRACING OUR NEIGHBORS implies taking the initiative to cultivate authentic love relationships with those who live among us for different reasons. My vision and goal are to continue motivating our Latino leadership, as partners, to fulfill God’s mission with responsibility.”
-Santiago Reales Director of Red Latina CBFNC
CBFNC PARTNERED WITH CBF GLOBAL, congregations and other organizations to provide disaster recovery efforts in several eastern North Carolina communities dealing with devastation from Hurricanes Florence and Michael, which stormed across our state in the fall of 2018. Recovery efforts lasted well into 2020.
In the immediate aftermath of the storms, CBFNC staff reached out to pastors and leaders of partner congregations in the affected areas, providing spiritual and financial support.

DISASTER
RESPONSE

Working with Rick Burnette of CBF Disaster Response, we employed two area coordinators, Daynette Snead Perez in Jones County and Todd Padgett in Columbus County, to coordinate volunteer efforts in those communities and adjacent areas. First, New Bern and First, Whiteville, provided volunteer housing for the Jones and Columbus efforts, respectively.

We are grateful for these leaders and churches, and all those who gave generously and served selflessly to embrace our vulnerable neighbors with the tangible love of Christ.

GRANTS

“While these communities suffered the disruptive effects of Hurricane Florence, the quick, continuous, and organized efforts of CBF Disaster Response allowed residents to actively participate in their own repair decisions and eventually return to their homes. As a result, the communities were able to move forward with the reopening of churches, resumption of community gatherings, and the return of community members. In addition to construction support, the uplifting nature of the CBF DR efforts provided residents with spiritual and emotional support throughout the recovery process.”

RACIALEQUITY&JUSTICE
JUBILEE BAPTIST officially began as a brand new fellowship as a replant of Ephesus Baptist in Chapel Hill in September 2019. With the mission of "Love as if a Different World is Possible," Jubilee began with approximately 100 people in attendance.
CBFNC financially supported 3 additional churches last year as part of our new church starts:
For 15 years, CBFNC has sought to broaden understanding and provide resources on the issue of racial equity and justice. Under the leadership of CBFNC’s Racial Equity and Justice Team, we have convened conversations, offered workshops and developed curriculum to help church leaders equip congregations to engage in a “ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5:19). Racial justice was to have been a dominant theme at March’s Annual Gathering, which, unfortunately, was cancelled due to the Coronavirus. The Racial Equity Institute "Groundwater Presentation" that was originally planned as part of Annual Gathering, was offered as a virtual experience instead.

“The fall beach retreat at Caswell was the first trip I planned as the new youth minister at Clemmons First Baptist Church. It was their first exposure to CBFNC, an organization that I have loved for many years. My youth were excited to go back to a place they were familiar with, but to experience it in a new way. I hoped to begin creating new memories, and this beach retreat gave us the perfect opportunity to bond as a group away from the hustle and bustle of their lives at home. This trip kicked off our future as a group, and they have continued to talk about the memories they made there all year long. It made them excited for other CBFNC trips, such as the Winterplace ski retreat, and of course they began a countdown to return to Caswell again.”
- Rev. Kaylee Godfrey
Minister of Youth and Outreach, Clemmons FBC Clemmons

"Our youth group looks forward to the Ski Retreat all year long. They love getting out on the slopes and sliding down the snowy mountains on tubes! As fun as the snow is, we love the opportunity that the ski retreat provides us to grow together as a family! Lasting bonds and spiritual connections are made each year on the ski retreat. We make memories and come home with stories to tell! This retreat has become a sacred tradition for First Baptist Elkin. I'm so thankful for this CBF retreat and the positive impact it has made each year for our youth group."

CBFNC’S
INVESTMENT IN MINISTERING
to young adults and college students has always been integral in our overall commitment to serving Christ. In today’s environment, connecting with students is ever so important. Having a CBFNC campus minister with whom students can relate is paramount as they go through these crucial years into adulthood. Our campus ministers invested in the lives of college students in a variety of ways over the past year. We are proud that during the COVID-19 upheaval, our college ministers continued to connect with their students, as well as reach new students. The ways in which we do college ministry have changed drastically this year, but CBFNC and our campus ministers are discovering new ways to reach and connect with young adults during this important time in their lives.

SPRING BREAK MISSION TRIP COLLEGIATE MINISTRY
Students from Western Carolina University, UNC Asheville, and Appalachian State University spent time on their spring break serving in North Charleston, SC. The students worked with Metanoia, a community development organization started by CBF of South Carolina. Students worked on property fences and painting housing units that Metanoia will use to make affordable housing possible in North Charleston.

MID-WINTER RETREAT
10 Campus groups participated

Just as the spring semester began at college campuses across North Carolina, CBFNC Collegiate Ministry gathered for its annual Mid-Winter Retreat. Students and support staff from over 10 different campuses assembled for a time worship and reflection at Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, SC. The theme, “In-Focus,” was chosen for the weekend to intentionally be a time of spiritual renewal and rest, giving students opportunities to explore different topics. This year, the event was expanded to include CBF young adult ministries from other states.
12 Young Leaders to Know with NC connections
CBFNC Campus Minister Liz Britt and Ministry Intern Adrian Bullock were recognized in CBF’s 25 Young Leaders to Know, which were recognized during the 2020 virtual CBF General Assembly.

PROVIDING SUPPORT AND SCHOLARSHIP
ASSISTANCE to students engaged in theological education is an important part of the work of CBFNC.
Supported by an endowment fund established by CBFNC in 2008 to honor Randall and Lou Lolley, the Lolley Scholarships are our most comprehensive scholarships that provide perpetual funding of theological education for future ministers. Through individual and congregational gifts to the endowment fund, CBFNC is able to support four to five outstanding students for all three years of their M.Div. program. Please join us in congratulating the following 2020–2021 Lolley Scholarship recipients.

OUR FELLOWSHIP ENHANCE
AN UNANTICIPATED SHIFT
Bringing Cooperative Baptists across North Carolina together for the CBFNC Annual Gathering each March is central to how we enhance our fellowship. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we made the hard decision to cancel this year’s Annual Gathering. The global pandemic that forced radical changes for the world, our nation and our churches, also led to a new approach to ministry for CBFNC. Our response to the Coronavirus included the following:
• Online Resources: Created a Coronavirus Resources page on cbfnc.org

$20,000+
Awarded in grants
• Virtual Roundtables and Webinars: Hosted online events on various topics

• Individual Consultations and Assistance: Checking on and consulting with pastors, associate ministers and other church leaders, offered PPE supplies and online giving platform for churches
22 Virtual roundtables & webinars
• Grants: Offered special technology and hunger fund grants to congregations and ministry partners
• Robust Communication: Increased communication to a weekly email in the initial phase and continue to communicate regularly and clearly through a variety platforms

In the midst of the pandemic, our nation found itself in the grip of another upheaval over racial injustice. A series of murders of black people, at the hands of police or vigilantes, led to protests nationwide. Building on a strong foundation laid by more than a decade of racial justice ministry, CBFNC offered a webinar led by Dr. Curtis Freeman and Dr. David Goatley both with Duke Divinity School about deepening the racial justice conversation. We also provided training online by the Racial Equity Institute in which 200 people registered. Our Racial Equity Justice and Ministry team is working to expand racial justice resources and advocacy in the days ahead.

Putting our ministry into motion to share God's love in our state and world.
GOING FORWARD
BECAUSE THE 2020 ANNUAL GATHERING
was cancelled, the CBFNC Annual Business Meeting (ABM) was pushed back to June, during the state meeting of the virtual 2020 CBF General Assembly. In the ABM, our North Carolina fellowship voted to approve new bylaws, allowing CBFNC to adopt a new Ministry Team Structure that will be implemented in April 2021. This new Ministry Team structure will be more nimble and flexible, involve and bless more people in the areas of their passion and giftedness, and enable us to better “put our ministry in motion” to address the pressing challenges of congregations and our shared mission.
Putting our ministry into motion to share God's love in our state and world.
