Dear Piper’s Angels & Crossing Family

If you are reading this, I want to get this point across clearly…YOU HELPED BUILD this organization into one of the most impactful grassroots nonprofit organizations in the country for cystic fibrosis. On January 26th, 2020, we celebrated our third birthday. We are fortunate to have not only survived, but to have continuously grown in our first three years of a start-up nonprofit business. This accomplishment in itself is a big win worth celebrating, and worth acknowledging your role for the value you have brought to the development of The Crossing event, Piper’s Angels Foundation, and the successful implementation of our mission: to support and improve the lives of families and patients in the cystic fibrosis community. The groundwork has been laid for four signature programs - Urgent Financial Assistance, Salt Supply, Unmasking Mindfulness, and Dining Days; as well as a global day of activism Warpaint Wednesday, an endowment fund, and an international fundraising event - The Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis. We’ve learned a tremendous amount along the way and we are constantly seeking to improve. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for everyone who has poured their energy into making the first few years a successful and magical journey. One of the most important aspects of our work is to ignite a spark of advocacy and hope within each patient or caregiver. When they feel that fire start to grow in their hearts we fan the flames by giving them the tools to champion the cause, which invariably empowers them to feel like they have a voice and live their greatest life possible. We are a CF family fighting for other CF families. It’s literally in the DNA of who we are. We’ve received several awards and accolades over the last twelve months that symbolize the strength in our team and deliberate intention in our work. The short film documentary Epic Love, from the 2018 Crossing, won first place feature film in Santa Cruz, California thanks to the beautiful storytelling of Talia Schizzano of Tallymark Productions. At the Non-Profits First, Hats Off Awards event last fall, we were honored to take home

two awards for People’s Choice and Executive Director of the year. These moments of triumph and celebration are a direct reflection of the heart of this organization, which invariably is a direct reflection of the heart of what it means to be a CF Warrior. The 2019 Crossing was dedicated to Megan Tims, a double lung transplant and cancer survivor, and all-around awesome human being. Megan has battled through more than most would endure in a hundred lifetimes, and continues to march to the beat of her own drum. As we prepared to leave the beach in Bimini this past year to embark out into the dark unknown waters of the Gulf Stream, we chanted ‘Megan Strong!’ together. From my perspective, it was the most meaningful moment of the Crossing when a collective voice rang out recognizing and honoring our WHY. Megan is a powerhouse of inspiration for the Tims family, Piper’s Angels Foundation, and the CF community at large. How does Megan inspire? She doesn’t need to do a TED Talk, she doesn’t need to make YouTube Videos, and she doesn’t need to have 100,000 followers on social media. Megan inspires through a sincere smile and humble stoicism. She inspires with a courageous heart and graceful presence. Megan inspires because she shows up in her own life and for those around her. And it’s this simple yet underestimated act of SHOWING UP that has profoundly transformed and transcended an idea of crossing the ocean into a prestigious international event and award-winning socially innovative organization. How are you showing up in your life? It’s easy to over complicate what you need to do, versus understanding how important and meaningful it is to those around you to show up. This is the realization I’ve taken away from this past year. It will hurt more to run, hide, and excuse your way out of being there for yourself and others, so follow Megan’s lead and show up. No judgement, no expectations, just the simple act of being present, and maybe adding a sincere smile. :) This is what it means to be a CF Warrior. This is what it means to be a Warrior.

Bold in the face of fear. Inspire every breath. Showing up wit h infinite grat itude, Travis Suit, Founder & Executive Director

CF Families

fighting for CF families MEGAN YOU INSPIRE ALL OF US AND IT WAS PIPER’S ANGELS FOUNDATION’S HONOR TO DEDICATE THE 2019 CROSSING TO YOU! Megan doesn’t just inspire every breath, Megan inspires me to be a fighter, a warrior, and a funny and loving person even when life slaps you in the face. She inspires me to realize when you think life is hard and you want to quit to never quit and keep fighting. I hope one day I’m half the fighter that my sister Megan is. If I come close to that I’ll be a happy man. — RYAN TIMS, BROTHER After her diagnosis we knew her life would be hard. What we didn’t know was how much more difficult it would be. We also didn’t know how tenacious and strong she would be through her life. The pride and love we have for her is beyond words. — DENISE AND CHRIS TIMS, PARENTS When I met my husband and his younger sister Megan, my whole life changed. Before Megan, I had never heard of cystic fibrosis nor did I understand the journey that would be before her and us as a family. The endless breathing treatments, countless medications, numerous surgeries, a double lung transplant, random complications, cancers, and overall CF challenges that Megan has endured show the strength and perseverance she’s always had throughout her life. The sheer tenacity Megan has shown by overcoming each obstacle she’s been faced with has taught me so much about appreciating life. This girl is STRONG. Her strength is contagious, so when the Crossing was dedicated to her this year and they used the slogan “Megan Strong”, it made perfect sense to those of us who have seen what’s she’s been through first hand. I am so grateful to be a part of Megan’s family and the Piper’s Angels family, I am inspired each day by both of them. — TATIANA TIMS, SISTER IN LAW

When I found out they were dedicating the Crossing to me I was so honored. Standing on the beach welcoming so many people who were saying that they thought of my fight and Megan strong while paddling across the ocean is something I will always be grateful for and never forget. — MEGAN TIMS

Megan is not only my sister but she has been a light in my world showing me what it’s like to fight for breath with grace while living to the fullest. She is a humble warrior and doesn’t know just how much of an inspiration she is to others, but she definitely is. That’s why this years Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis being dedicated to her was so moving for my family and I. She finally received the respect and appreciation for being the example of what a CF Warrior is. Tears of joy were shed by me many times this year being a part of a community who knows the struggles of a CF family and is there supporting you throughout the trials. Our family is eternally grateful to be a part of the Piper’s Angels Foundation family and can’t wait to see this love spread to more CF families out there. — SEAN TIMS, BROTHER Megan inspires me everyday through her actions and kind, loving nature to be the best version of myself that I can. She has a unique way of overcoming even the most insurmountable of life obstacles all while displaying incredible poise and strength. I am beyond lucky to be in the position I am to get to spend so much time with her and I cherish every single second we have together. — WILL PHILLIPS, BOYFRIEND

Bimini

Paddle out ceremony

This past June, The Crossing For CF hosted their 2nd annual paddle out ceremony in Bimini. This has become an honored tradition that Piper’s Angels has chosen to represent those in the CF Community. With roses in hand, the participants entered the water simultaneously and formed a circle of solidarity in the ocean to show respect for those with CF who have left us too soon and those continuing to fight everyday. The salt water having positive health benefits in those with CF, the circle symbolizing the way the ocean brings us together, and the roses representing cystic fibrosis; all of these components brought together are what makes such a unique and special event. We feel honored and blessed to have been able to share this moment together, for as we called out the names of CF Warriors, the wind picked up, the rain clouds hung in the distance (as if waiting on us to finish) and we shared a moment of silence in unison; followed by cheers of hope, love, and respect for the CF Community. The paddle out ceremony is a beautiful way to remind our Crossing Crusaders the reason for The Crossing: that everything we do is for the advancement and improvement of those with cystic fibrosis, and that we will continue to fight for them no matter the obstacles we and they face. Clayton Smith In Loving Memory

Clayton B. Smith was a dedicated Father, Grandfather, Husband, Mentor and Servant to the Community. During the early morning of February 6, 2020 the citizens of Marco Island, the Smith family and The Crossing Crusader Community lost a loyal and caring member of their tribe. Clayton was involved in a tragic vehicle accident on the night of February 5th, that took his life. Crossing Crusader Josh Ferris, reflects on his friendship and love for Clayton. “Clayton was a man that I admired, loved, gravitated to and modeled myself after”. Clayton Smith was a natural born leader and presented himself with strength and confidence that he gladly shared with whoever was willing to accept his guidance. Clayton loved his family with a passion that any human being would be lucky to receive. Although this love shines bright, Clayton often put others before himself. Clayton was the first one to go out of his way to help others working on multiple fundraisers for his fellow employees, ensuring the safety and health of his son Buzz in a time of sickness and actively helping raise thousands of dollars for the Piper’s Angels Foundation. Clayton was a beam of light that will forever burn in our hearts creating love in those he has affected for years to come!

The beach bell to me is an adrenaline filled celebration to ring out “I did it”!!!!! And for all those people on the beach suffering from the disease or impacted by a friend or family member going through this, it is music to their ears. Every time it goes off they are hearing “Yes! Another great soul cares and loves me and wants to help!” Months, possibly years of training led to this day for these amazing, strong, loving, and devoted cystic fibrosis warriors. As far as the artistic description, I thought function was more important than form, especially since this is a fundraiser and the cost needs to be kept down. I also like steel because it is strong like the brave souls that made the crossing. – Norm Gitzen Photo by: David Scarola

Bahama’s Relief

It’s impossible to describe the aftermath left behind by the unrelenting destruction of Hurricane Dorian in September of 2019.

While Florida waited and prayed for the storm to turn north and avoid our beloved shores, our neighboring Bahamian family endured category five hurricane force winds for over twenty-four hours, devastating the eastern island chain from Hope Town and Marsh Harbor all the way west past Freeport. In the days we watched the powerful storm hover over our neighbors without abating, it became clear to the Piper’s Angels community that our Bahamian family was in dire need. Rallying around an outpouring of love, compassion, strength, and with faith in the resilience of the ‘island way,” Piper’s Angels Foundation was proud to participate and organize 11 emergency relief runs through donated vessels, fuel, and supplies, in addition to two larger cargo type relief shipments totaling more than 30,000lbs each. In all, Piper’s Angels Foundation helped organize over 90,000lbs of relief supplies, including a Christmas delivery of toys, games, and bikes for the children of the Bahama’s. Our relationship with the islands will always be one of love, trust, and friendship — as we share our hearts with them and they share their homes and ‘island life’ with us. From all in the Piper’s Angels family, thank you. – Paul Smolchek,

Building a Boat

to Cross the Gulf Stream YOU MUST BE KIDDING! When my great friend Blair first told me

THE BOAT BUILD VERSION 1 – We completed the 20’ Fairhaven Flyer in 4 months and began sea trials and long training rows. With plans to take her out into the deep blue, we christened our sleek creation, “Wahoo.” She rows easily, but we quickly realized that dories love to be filled with massive cod and halibut. When lightly loaded, they have a wicked side-to-side motion — not an issue in smooth water. On several occasions in the ocean, we were knocked off our rowing seats. In one particularly rough day, we were competing in a lifeguard rowing race in which a broadside wave almost capsized us. The boat filled with seawater. We had no way to pump out the water. We drifted miserably to shore, washing up like a disoriented pilot whale. I was exhausted and devastated that day. I wasn’t sure if this boat, or Jenny and I were up for this challenge. I gave myself the rest to the day to mope, and with the next fresh new sunrise, I would sort out our alternatives. Could we change this boat? Should we use the surf boats the lifeguards use (so heavy)? Should we purchase a production coastal rowing boat (big bucks)?

about the Crossing for CF, I was astounded at the idea of anyone paddle boarding 80 miles across the Gulf Stream. I had sailed that stretch many times and had gotten roughed up pretty good in tough sailboats. Blair noted that the event was open to all kinds of craft and that they even had some rowers the previous year. No kidding? The paddleboard idea was too far out for me, but strangely, I could imagine rowing 80 miles. I had been thinking about a new challenge. Maybe this was it? The timing of that discussion with Blair was perfect, as I was getting ready to purchase materials to build a 17’ rowing dory. Before the end of the conversation, I knew I needed a bigger rowboat — a two-person boat. I wondered if my daughter Jenny would join me. GREAT NEWS – JENNY SAID YES! Jenny agreed to be my rowing partner, and Team Oarlocks was born. I devoured all the information I could on the event. I learned much more about the mission of Piper’s Angels and the needs of families dealing with cystic fibrosis. I also discovered that I knew or had known people suffering from the disease. Not only was this going to be a huge personal challenge, I realized we would be part of a much more significant effort to support CF families.

THE BOAT BUILD VERSION 2 – I contacted the boat’s designer, Sam Devlin, and he was delighted to work with me to modify our boat, adding stability and a way to shed large amounts of water to avoid swamping. We took a breath, rolled up our sleeves, and started cutting. We added a false floor and a water ballast tank. We also added four scuppers and a beast of a manual bilge pump. Overkill? Absolutely.

THE GOAL: TO GET A HUG FROM PIPER – After watching all the gorgeous youtube videos of the event, I saw that all the weary participants were getting hugs from this little blond girl named Piper. Hey, I wanted a hug from Piper too. Simple 5 step process to get a hug: build a boat; learn to row; raise $3,000; row 80 miles across the Gulf Stream and straggle ashore in Lake Worth.

THE BIG EVENT – We arrived in Bimini a few days before the event. I had not expected this to be such a powerful and emotional few days, but it was wonderful. The gathering pulled together 400 like-minded and loving people. We could all sense the magnitude of our real goal – to support the CF Warriors. The thrill

did. After several hours in the dark and three hair raising cargo ship crossings, the sunrise was a significant relief. In daylight, we could see the cargo ships and could match our efforts against the 4-foot seas a bit more effectively. Thankfully, Wahoo performed very well and was perfectly suited for the sea conditions that day. The flyover from the bright orange U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was a thrill, giving us another little boost to keep rowing. It took us 15 hours to reach the beach party in Lake Worth. The cheering of the crowds lifted our spirits as we approached. The emotions were overwhelming as I tried to reach the finish line on the beach. 50 yards for all those hugs. My legs were not working! So many goals achieved: rowing 2.7 million meters in training, $675k raised by the event, sharing the challenge with my daughter Jenny, and meeting so many amazing people along the way. A life-changing experience. — Bruce Swabb, Team Oarlocks

of preparing for the upcoming marathon was the icing on the cake. Rest. Eat. Hydrate. Quell the foreboding thoughts! We had invested so much effort in our year of preparation, yet we knew that there were factors out of our control that could stop us short of our goal. Gear failure was my biggest fear. The weather could knock us out in the blink of an eye. We had had daily storms. Regardless, I was inspired by the focus and quiet preparation by everyone. The midnight launch was one of the most exciting and petrifying experiences of my life. We felt like an invasion force launching off the beach in waves. Once we were a hundred yards from the beach, we entered our own small solitary world. Under the watchful eye of our captain, Glenn Davis, we lost contact with all the other teams. Glenn kept us on course and out of the way of the massive cargo ships. Our job was to row. And row we

Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Above and beyond the call of duty By Matt Lavigna

My journey started in an unpredictable way. A group of friends set up a leisure paddle one day. During the paddle, my friend Chris “Skip” Laforte mentioned the Crossing For A Cure. This was the very first time I’d ever heard anything about the Crossing so I did what anyone would do, I inquired. Skip explained the event: “It’s an 80 mile paddle challenge from the Bahamas to Florida.” My initial reaction was that of which I’ve heard from so many since: “What? Who would do something like that? That’s crazy!” Unbeknownst to me, for the next few weeks I couldn’t get the thought of the Crossing out of my mind. See, I’m always looking for a challenge, which is what I think intrigued me so much. So I decided to explore my curiosity. I first researched the Crossing For A Cure online, which lead me to the Piper’s Angels Foundation and cystic fibrosis, or CF. I honestly didn’t know anything about CF but quickly learned, and from that point on I was on a mission. I asked my girlfriend (now fiancée), Ashley Poer, if she would do the Crossing with me. What do you think she said? That’s right: “Are you crazy?”. Needless to say, after we got through the initial reaction and a few weeks time, Ashley, as she always does, supported me and committed to making the journey with me. After registering for the event, I brainstormed about how to make this adventure as memorable as possible. I reached out to my Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) family to build a team. First, I asked Deputy

Gregory Meehan. Without skipping a beat, he was in. Ashley recruited Midori Robbins, who also committed without hesitation. Now that we had our four person relay team, it was time to find a boat and crew. Midori was very integral in this process. She knew exactly who to ask: Deputy Thomas Hannigan, Jr. Boy, was she right. Tom agreed to captain his boat for us after learning about the event and the cause. He mustered up an all-star crew, which included his father and retired Lieutenant Thomas Hannigan, Sr., Deputy Gregory Harris, and Sergeant Michael Mendelsberg. Team Shooting Stars was born. Throughout this process we had another boat and more paddlers committed, but as time went on, they had to back out due to life events. With a solid team made up of PBSO employees I went a step further. I made a very important and iconic phone call that changed my life for the better. I called Travis Suit. I had a very brief and detailed conversation with Travis. Although he was in a remote area of the country with very poor cell service, we were able to connect and I laid out my demands: in order for me to collect money I needed the fundraising site custom made to certain specifications. Travis wasn’t sure if it was possible to do, but he got it done. Ultimately I’m glad he came through and I think he is, too. I then looked within the Sheriff ’s Office for fundraising support. It was through this process that I met Kathleen and

I was blown away and so ready to hit the ocean. The seas were angry and confused that day, making the Crossing much more challenging than anticipated, but my teammates came through. I honestly could not have gotten through it without them. We fought sea sickness, wind, and rain, but kept focused on the mission at hand, knowing deep down that our temporary suffering was not in any way comparable to the ongoing struggles of those affected by CF. This kept us all moving forward. Landing on the beach in Lake Worth Beach brought everything full circle. The welcoming party was unbelievable. To see all those people cheering for us made the journey worthwhile. After all the excitement and the sea sickness wore off, I couldn’t help but reflect back on our journey. We are so blessed to be able to not only participate in, but to contribute to such a worthy cause. I am humbled by the experience and ready to do it again in 2020. In fact, I am happy to announce that our 2020 Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis team, PAL Shooting Stars, is complete and ready to do it all again.

Kevin Collins, PBSO employees whose family has suffered from cystic fibrosis. Two of their three children have been diagnosed with CF. Their eldest, Kevin Collins Jr., sadly passed away from CF at the age of 24 and their youngest, Kelly Collins, is currently living with the terminal disease. This revelation really hit home -- and the PBSO family responded. They went above and beyond the call of duty with fundraising. In 6 short weeks, the PBSO family in their boundless benevolence inspired by the Collins family, raised over $110,000 to help individuals and families affected by CF. During our Epic Love radio show appearance I proudly made the announcement that our team was dedicating our paddle to Kelly Collins. The Crossing event came and went before we knew it. The trip to the Bahamas was smooth and fast, but we’ll never forget the rough 16 hour journey back to Lake Worth Beach. The energy on the Bimini beach at midnight to kick off the Crossing is indescribable. You really have to be there to give it any justice. Leeann Suit, Travis’ sister, performed a sage smudging ceremony.

“IN LOVING MEMORY OF KEVIN, JR. WHO TRULY BELIEVED THAT ONE DAY THERE WOULD BE A CURE... AND IN HONOR OF KELLY, WHO CONTINUES TO FIGHT CYSTIC FIBROSIS EVERYDAY.”

Todd Bourgeois I’ll Keep Crossing and Helping Others

The Crossing For A Cure epic paddle challenge and international competition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you begging for more! I was asked to be on a four-person team in 2018 by David Slemp, who roped me in by telling me it was a competitive race. I said yes – I’m all about a challenge and like to compete. When I got to the Bahamas, I quickly realized this event was much bigger and more powerful than I ever imagined. Not the competition – that quickly became an insignificant component in my mind – but the energy behind every person that was there fighting for the cystic fibrosis community. I quickly learned what people with this condition and their families go through and how this event directly helps with their struggles. To top it off, I was completely inspired to see 3 athletes with CF make the paddle across, solo! After 2018, I knew I was going back to the event and I wanted to get more people involved. My team somehow talked two other four-person teams from

I WAS VERY HESITANT TO TAKE ON A SOLO PADDLE MYSELF BECAUSE THAT KIND OF CRAZY ENDURANCE IS NOT MY STYLE. YET I KNEW PEOPLE WITH CF FIGHT EVERY DAY, AND ALL I HAD TO GIVE WAS ABOUT 15 HOURS OF MY SWEAT TO RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS FOR THE DISEASE, SO I THOUGHT I NEEDED TO BUCK UP AND DO IT! picked up. The third wall, well, at that point I couldn’t actually think anymore so I’m not sure what pulled me out of that dark place, but all I can say is that something somehow ignited inside me and that the last three miles were at over a 6.5 mph pace to finish strong. All this was tied in with crazy awesome experiences. The beauty of the night and cobalt blue of the ocean in 2,500 feet of water with glowing bioluminescence that lit up with each paddle stroke. The awe of a sunrise in the middle of the ocean. The rain, the wind, the chop, the calm, it was all there! I haven’t met a single person who has done this and said they wouldn’t do it again. They all say it’s powerful, and want to continue to be a part of this event. I know for myself, I’ll keep crossing and helping others cross because of the crazy awesome energy behind it all.

my town to join in and take on the challenge. I was very hesitant to take on a solo paddle myself because that kind of crazy endurance is not my style. Yet I knew people with CF fight every day, and all I had to give was about 15 hours of my sweat to raise money and awareness for the disease, so I thought I needed to buck up and do it! Paddling 76 miles solo was an experience I’ll never forget. Of course, as a competitive person I pushed it as hard as I could. I hit 3 distinct “walls” at approximately miles 40, 55, and 72, where I had to find a means to keep up the pace. The first wall, I embraced it as a great challenge and pushed through like I always have as an athlete. The second wall, I started receiving messages from our boat crew to think about all those that suffer from CF and how what we were doing is powerful – their motivations worked, and the pace

Time to Celebrate! Appreciation party

THE PIPER’S ANGELS FOUNDATION has established the “Urgent Financial Assistance (UFA) program to assist people battling cystic fibrosis in need of medically necessary and time-sensitive financial assistance. CF patients and their families face numerous challenges throughout a single year that can burden a family financially. These challenges include

long-term hospitalizations, lung transplants, treatment not covered by insurance, and funeral expenses. Our goal is to provide monetary grants from $500 - $5,000 to help cover the costs associated with these challenges and help to alleviate some of the financial stress and burden faced during these hard times.

After several month-long hospital stays, various infections, and declining lung function, twelve-year-old CF Warrior Christian and his family were struggling to pay their rent and phone bills, as well as feed their family. The toll of long hospital stays, and long periods without working on family providers, like Christian’s mother, can be devastating. Many times parents and caretakers will lose their cars and homes as their incomes dwindle while they watch their children fight courageously to overcome infections and setbacks. The Piper’s Angels Urgent Financial Assistance program was able to provide Christian and his family the help they needed to begin to pay off their debt, rent and keep this CF family fed. – CF Warrior Christian

Salt Supply & Forever Stoke Scholarships The Salt Supply Program and Forever Stoke Scholarships were created to provide a lifelong sustainable path for people with cystic fibrosis to participate in saltwater activities. Participating in saltwater activities has been scientifically proven to increase respiratory health and provide a natural therapy for healing in a positive environment. Establishing this interest and skill set is critical at an early age before lung function decreases. The Piper’s Angels Foundation provides Forever Stoke Scholarship opportunities for the following: • Crossing For Cystic Fibrosis (such as participation in the annual paddle event) • Equipment & Gear (such as paddle boards, surf boards, roof racks, snorkel gear, etc) • Camps & Coaching (surf camps in Costa Rica, professional coaching, other water sports camps, etc.) • Ambassador Sponsorship (participation in saltwater sports) • Other Salt Activities (such as snorkeling, sailing, jet skiing, parasailing, etc.).

Woooohooooo!!! Piper’s Angels Foundation awarded Miles a Forever Stoke Scholarship through their Salt Supply Program. This scholarship enables our family to go to Costa Rica for a week so he can develop a lifelong passion, skillset, and sustainable path towards surfing and other saltwater activities… research shows that people with CF who spend most of their time in saltwater, have better lung function. We are so grateful that Miles gets this opportunity. THANK YOU, Travis Suit! Miles couldn’t be more excited! He HAD to start practicing this evening. – Sharon Stokey

In 2019, Piper’s Angels Foundation launched the inaugural Warpaint Wednesday. Warpaint Wednesday is a global day of activism and giving for the cystic fibrosis community fueled by the power of social media and community collaboration. The cystic fibrosis community is often unable to connect due to the constraints of infection prevention. Warpaint Wednesday offers social collaboration and shared experiences for those battling CF and their families. Celebrated globally on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (in the US) and before Giving Tuesday, Warpaint Wednesday helps lead the holiday season when many people focus on their charitable giving. The rallying cry of Warpaint Wednesday is “Ignite the Advocate, Empower a Community, & Champion the Cause.” Join the movement by wearing your Warpaint and representing your CF Warrior in the fight against cystic fibrosis. THE DINING DAYS PROGRAM is a psycho-social health program that supports emotional wellness through nutrition. Piper’s Angels Foundation has formed a strategic partnership with BJ’s Restaurants & Brewhouse to offer a much needed break from traditional hospital food during long term hospitalization. This saves the family money otherwise spent on ordering meals or buying groceries and provides a sense of control. Ordering food from a full menu based on taste becomes exciting and meaningful. The vision of the Dining Days program is to expand the offerings to include other restaurants and meal plan companies, and allow donors to sponsor meals to support the families. If you know a good restaurant or company that’s a good fit for Dining Days, email us at: info@pipersangels.org.

“Being able to offer Dining Days as a supplement to the hospital food helps me as a CF Social Worker to better help the patients and families I serve. Thank you to Piper’s Angels Foundation and the West Palm Beach location of BJ’s for their support in this.” – Megan Casabe, CF Social Worker

The program utilizes live online webinars, educational video content, and in person one-on-one instruction to provide a platform for coping tools in the CF community. This program affords the opportunity to enrich the Western medical experience with time tested Eastern traditions. This style of mindfulness practice is a process that is simple to learn and open to anyone of any age or physical ability. It requires no special equipment and can be done almost anywhere making it the perfect addition to improve the wellbeing of the cystic fibrosis community.

Piper’s Angels Foundation has partnered with Matt Cardone Meditation to offer Unmasking Mindfulness, a collaborative and innovative social program for the CF community. The objective of the Unmasking Mindfulness program is to increase overall wellbeing, connectedness, and positive energy among the cystic fibrosis community through an integrative web-based platform by incorporating eastern healing into their daily treatment regimen. Unmasking Mindfulness is designed to provide a comprehensive healing practice to those who battle cystic fibrosis.

“I felt very in tune with my thoughts and present.” –Piper

“The unmasking mindfulness program was such a timely gift! I wear many hats - wife, mom to 3 busy boys, friend, meteorologist, and Cystic Fibrosis patient. It can be easy and tempting to spend my days checking tasks off my mental list. I often find myself distracted by all I need to accomplish. In the hustle, I’m left feeling like I’m doing everything halfway. With the mindfulness program led by Matt Cardone, I was able to prioritize being “still” and learn the grace-filled practice of meditation. Through this process, I’ve realized that in taking time for myself each day- to mentally declutter and recenter- I am able to pour out more of myself to those around me, present and engaged. Managing Cystic Fibrosis can feel like climbing up a sandy hill. Unmasking mindfulness has shown me the importance of paying attention to and appreciating my body, rather than only fighting against my genes and being disappointed in the way I was made. Being still each day has allowed me to face the darker fears and emotions I try to ignore. I’m so thankful to Piper’s Angels and Matt Cardone for allowing me to understand and explore mindfulness and meditation.” – Jackie Miller

CF Warrior Endowment fund The CF Warrior Endowment Fund is an investment account designed to aggregate funds to create a sustainable source for providing financial support to the CF community. Currently, the account has an estimated $215,000 (March 2020). We will be making deposits on a semi-annual basis with a long term goal of $10,000,000. The fund’s purpose is to utilize the earned interest to make consistent and sustainable distributions to cover needs for CF patients and families through the Piper’s Angels Foundation programs. 52

2013 TIMELINE

It all started with an idea. Travis, Piper’s Dad was told by Doctors that the Ocean has healing benefits for CF patients. Travis decides he is going to cross from the Bahamas to Florida on a standup paddleboard to raise awareness about Piper’s new medical diagnosis Cystic Fibrosis. Travis had never been on a paddleboard before. He builds a small team who love and support him and Piper – the very first Crossing Crusaders and Crew. They had two support boats – Captains Lee Heaton and Brad Nolin with Crew Lori Griffith, Ed Pence, Tony Cinilia and Robert Suit.

THE COURAGE OF THE CF COMMUNITY IS INSPIRATIONAL Participating in the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis 2019 as a recreational paddler and fundraiser was easily one of the most physical, mental, and spiritual experiences in my life. When I first learned of the event, cystic fibrosis was a mystery to me. I didn’t know anyone with the disease, or how it affects people and their families. I did know that I wanted to learn more and I wanted to help, but initially, it was the Crossing itself that captured my attention. I mean, eighty miles... Eighty miles by car can be conquered in a little over an hour. It isn’t insurmountable—merely a simple endeavor one can accomplish and then dismiss like yesterday’s coffee grounds. But eighty miles of open water? On a paddle board? The idea conjured so many emotions— terror, euphoria, exhilaration. But I also knew that if I made the attempt, the experience would be unforgettable. The Crossing from Bimini, Bahamas to Lake Worth, Florida, was a daunting, rolling, heaving, charge of the Atlantic Ocean. Pounding into the surf under the cloak of darkness with the goal of reaching the coast seemed like an exercise in insanity. I’ll never forget the fear, nor the intimidation, I felt standing at the shoreline looking out into the dark. But the moment delivered clarity: I was doing this by CHOICE. Those with cystic fibrosis don’t have that option— the disease is inescapable. They and their families have to tackle their fears. They simply cannot waver. The courage of the CF community was and is so inspirational— but so was the idea that I wasn’t doing this alone. Hundreds were paddling in the darkness, all unique individuals, all striving together with a common purpose. Those of whom I had only met a few days before—with faces I’d never seen and voices I had never heard—were now dear friends. We encouraged each other under the starry canopy of tropical sky, traversed the rhythmic swells, and prayed for daylight.

Sunrise was magical, a peaceful and lovely transition as darkness melted away. We shared a sense of smallness and wonder, as nothing seemed to exist but water, sky, and light. Its brightness brought hope; its warmth chased the chill of the early day. The rich blue of the Gulf Stream was intoxicating in its beauty, and as the sun rose into the heavens, our paddle strokes became trance-like. Hours melted away, and the golden rays from above began their slow descent to the west. We followed them to those waiting for us on the beach. Years ago, a Navy veteran told me the horizon rests at twelve miles in any direction at sea—I’ll always remain convinced it is farther—because Photo by: Dav id Scarola when the shoreline first appeared in the distance, it seemed no closer than the Moon. There was such a battle of emotions. Elation in seeing our journey’s objective, but mounting frustration that for now, it still seemed unreachable. Fatigue set in. Pain began to radiate from the back, shoulders, and arms. Hours passed, and the shoreline appeared no closer. The mounting frustration triggered another grand and spiritual moment. Fellow paddlers began to cheer and encourage each other. Tears, laughter, and newfound determination lifted us all. Less than a mile offshore, we could see, hear, and in a spiritual sense, feel the affection from those waiting for us. The explosion of emotion I felt when reaching the sand was overwhelming. Pure sensory overload—joy, respect, gratitude, exhaustion, power, and love. Such a humbling and life-altering moment. Travis Suit once told me, “Reynolds, you’ll get everything out of this event that you put into it.” Wise words. And he was absolutely right. Put your heart into your training, and into raising support and awareness for CF. Share the love and experience with your teammates. The grand memories will last forever. Photo by: David Scarola
