The Year

of Epic Love AS WE ROLL OFF OF ANOTHER YEAR, with the Crossing For A Cure 2018 in the books, we have a chance to reflect on what we learned and all of the incredible results.

It is apparent that the more genuine the introspection and reflection of your love, inversely, an outer manifestation of that reflection occurs and arrives as clear and almost instantaneously as what you see looking in the mirror.

When a seed is planted, it is not called a tree because it is merely an organic pebble of possibility. It is the tiny life source that contains within it, a vast and complex life form. From this small beginning emerges what could become a grand Live Oak, towering Sugar Pine, sprawling Cypress, majestic Redwood, or resilient Coconut Palm. All representing the growth of something that was once only contained within, that is now flourishing out into the world. When people stand in awe of an ancient tree, they are admiring the result of a life long at work. It is easy to forget where it all started.

In our case, it started with four relentless paddlers, and a steadfast crew of two boats in 2013, and has grown and magnified into a goal of two hundred paddlers and fifty boats in 2019. There is no secret to this growth. It is simply compassionate, open-minded, loving people giving it their all, and they are the source of love that has transcended across borders into a global presence, that is now called Epic Love. All love is powerful, just like all light is powerful, however when you amplify and focus the energy that goes into that light, it burns even brighter with purpose, which invariably intensifies passion, and shines further than ever before. In this mission, there is no ego projecting and promoting, their is only love flowing and attracting.

All of this is the fortunate by-product of a family fighting for their loved ones, and fighting for other families going through the same struggles, facing the same challenges, and asking what can we do to help? I’ve heard stories from the Crossing over the last few years that sing a familiar tune of courage, daring, heartbreak, suffering, beauty, strength, leadership, and inspiration.

These reverent characteristics come forth naturally as the result of a bold commitment to the cystic fibrosis community. A promise to those who we look to as a model, that carry the burden of a thousand lives, that exemplify human spirit in its greatest glory...

CF WARRIORS. They wear the scars of countless battles, that walk a path laden with a diverse set of unimaginable challenges,

and yet, despite getting knocked down, over and over again, rise up and press on because it is a necessity to survive.

Paddling 80 miles across the Ocean is a tough challenge, one that begins and ends in the same day. Navigating through the waters of cystic fibrosis, is like sailing out at Sea for your whole life, never realizing the meaning of standing on solid ground, but tending to your ship and doing everything in your power to keep the wind in your sails, weather the storms, and keep hope on the horizon.

If you’re looking to rejuvenate your spiritual nourishment, pick up the phone, and talk to a cystic fibrosis parent or patient, and just listen to the words they have to share. I have found no greater source of love, compassion, inspiration, and healing than to hold space for those who fight to make the most of this life, even if only for a single breath.

This year was the first year we had the paddle out ceremony in honor of the cystic fibrosis community. The intention was to come together and unite to recognize all of those people in the CF community that have lost their lives in helping advance the life expectancy so that children are now living into adulthood, and allowing for the incredible and inspiring stories of what people in the CF community are now able to accomplish. We were honoring the past, present, and future and calling out to the Universe for greater strength and hope in the CF community to continue to fight on. Roses are a beautiful symbol of hope in the CF community, and we were grateful to hold space in this way to give thanks for our lives and the purpose we are empowered to achieve together.

She Said Yes This year The Crossing for a Cure is a once in a life time experience that takes more heart and determination than one knows they have.

Everyone faces battles, whether it be Piper and the CF community, my father’s battle with lung cancer, or the continuous grind of any given day.

The lesson we learned on this ride was all it takes is one more stroke of your paddle, to get you one more mile, and one more hour into what seems like an endless journey. Until eventually we all emerged from this challenge stronger and ready to take on the next one.

For Gisselle and me, the end of our Crossing started the beginning of the next journey in our lives. — Michael Meixner

ART PROJECT BY JULIE ALLEN THE 65 ROSES ART PROJECT was inspired by the 65 Roses moniker created in 1965 by Ricky Weiss and was created as a fundraising marketing strategy that transformed into a touching movement of honor and support. Julie Allen decided to sell “mini-sponsorships” for her fundraising campaign by offering to paint a rose in the name of a business or individual on her 14 foot crossing board. Each donor of $65 or more was given the opportunity to choose a short statement, business or name that would be written across a painted banner, with the goal of “selling” 65 roses. Some of her donors chose to have the name of a CF patient written across the banner, some of her donors chose to remain anonymous and their rose was dedicated to someone with CF, some had business names, some had their own names, some honored their mothers and some chose moving phrases, the two most remarkable donations stated “To All CF Warriors” and “For this We Will Endure.” Julie relentlessly campaigned through Instagram and Facebook, giving recognition to each rose donor. She secured 49 rose donations and raised $5,330 by 78 people. The remaining 16 roses honored CF patients in the community.

A month and half before the crossing, Julie remodeled her board by fixing soft spots, replacing the deck pad and stenciling the 65 roses along the rails, nose and bottom of the board. The 65 Roses Art Project truly became a group art project when local artist Paul Seaman donated the paint; Julie’s father donated the work space and hours of time; & several crossing crusaders, their supporters and families gathered to outline each stenciled rose as Julie hand wrote each donors requested banner message.

The result was magnificent and a few days later a blessing ceremony was held to launch the 65 Roses Art Project into a local waterway.

follow your heart THIS YEAR I was invited by the Piper’s Angels Foundation to participate in the Crossing for a Cure, a paddle from the beautiful beach of Bimini, Bahamas to Lake Worth, Florida. I was invited only two weeks out, giving me just two weeks to prepare for the daunting 80-mile paddle (Yes, I’m crazy, but in a good way). But sometimes in life you have to go against logic and follow your heart – and the challenges of cystic fibrosis are something I know all too well. I used every tool and piece of knowledge I had available to prepare myself for this test of my will.

At the midnight launch on paddle day on the Bimini beach, I finally experienced first-hand what it meant to say that energy is electric. There was anticipatory energy everywhere and in everyone – it was in the air, my chest and left my lips and nose tingling. This was the energy of all of my fellow crossers who were nervous, exhilarated, and ecstatic to be on a mission for something greater than ourselves. It made us feel ten feet tall! I felt especially proud that I had defied stereotypes of someone with CF by participating in the Crossing. Gravity was on my side and I felt light as a feather.

Paddling into the moonlit darkness over the clear waters of Bimini created a sight nothing short of beautiful. I felt the warmth in the lights of our guide boat. I could feel the strength and happiness of the moment pounding through my chest. To have such a perfect moment with great people supporting me was more than I could have ever envisioned.

As the sun rose, it set the water ablaze and revealed the endless stretch of deep blue waters. Without anything in sight, you could think we were moving in place. If it hadn’t been for my great team beside me every stroke of the way, the beautiful horizon on the water would have not only stolen my heart away, but eventually my hope.

As soon as I caught a glimpse of the beach I felt the energy rush back into my body. All of the people waiting for our arrival gave me an unimaginable boost, mentally and physically. With every stroke I took, I was focused on inching my way closer and closer to that beach. As I got closer the heat became more bearable, each breath got easier and the cheers got louder.

Touching down on the beach overwhelmed my crew and I with a deep happiness that Photo by: Lori Griffith radiated within our chests, down to our legs. Each breath we took had a life if its own. The feeling of the sand beneath my feet felt like I was walking on water.

We made an amazing team effort for amazing reasons and had completed the Crossing of a lifetime.

Whenever I think back to each stroke of that paddle, I am filled with pride as each one culminated into one of my greatest achievements of my life. I would like to send an enormous THANK YOU to the Piper’s Angels Foundation for allowing my crew and I the opportunity to go on an adventure and experience of a lifetime.

Courage, love and light CONTRARY TO WHAT SOME MAY BELIEVE, courage is not a quality you are, or are not, born with. It is one that can be cultivated and honed.

Acquiring courage doesn’t necessarily entail doing something dramatic or astoundingly heroic. On a day-to-day basis many people summon courage to overcome both physical and psychological barriers in order to accomplish simple tasks.

Courage is the mental and emotional preparedness and ability to deal with difficult, challenging, and sometimes seemingly impossible circumstances. It is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty and intimidation.

When we work to develop courage, we both empower ourselves with the ability to confront problems head on, as well as, acquire the skills required to deal with life’s inevitable challenges.

Think of courage as a psychological muscle. When we build any muscle, we do so in order to build strength and resilience.

In building strategies for living a more productive, happy and meaningful life, developing courage is yet another way to take responsibility for your state of mind, your circumstances and your well-being.

So why am I talking about courage? There was a time in my life where I thought I was living the best life I could. Where I thought I was living an honest, courageous life. Boy was I wrong. I didn’t know just how wrong I was until Travis and Piper came into my life along with the entire Crossing For A Cure community!

I have supported Travis in his endeavors since the first Crossing in 2013, but it wasn’t until the 2018 Crossing For A Cure that I really was shown what love truly meant.

Love is all about giving without expecting much in return. It is beyond materialism or any conditions. Love knows no bounds.

It’s about lifting people up and supporting one another.

Now that I’ve given you the definitions of courage and love…

let’s talk about Piper. Piper is a perfect reflection of courage and love. When Travis and I started dating in 2017, Piper welcomed me into her world with open arms. She made it so easy to love her and brought more happiness and joy to my world than I could have ever dreamed of. She shines so brightly, it’s infectious, and to be around that light, love and positivity brings me nothing but pure enjoyment.

She teaches me so much. She inspires me to be the best human I can be. To do my best to lead by example, to show her how to be a strong woman, and to be here for her in every way I can when she needs me to be and even when she doesn’t.

I watch her face adversity like it’s nothing. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the daily routine of helping her to live with cystic fibrosis. Drink your Pediasure, take your pills, do your puffers, do your IPV, do your nebulizer…the list goes on…but she never complains, she never minds, and her strength never waivers.

Now that’s courage. Take a hard look at the life of a little girl dealing with cystic fibrosis and you’ll know courage.

falling in love with both her and her father Travis that I knew I wanted to help the Piper’s Angels Foundation in any way I could. My first step in doing so was registering for the 2018 Crossing For A Cure.

Little did I know that I was about to meet hundreds of individuals that would change my life forever. The journey from the time I registered to the moment I stood on that beach in Bimini was some of the most life changing months I have ever lived. From committee members, to volunteers, to crusaders and captains… my life was now full of LOVE, LIGHT, and COURAGE. As I was standing on the beach in Bimini, in the dark, preparing to paddle across the ocean alongside other paddlers, captains, and crew…

I looked around. I could feel the intensity, the sincerity of what we were all there to really do…to stand together for a purpose… to be a part of something greater than ourselves. There was something different in the air that night and I guarantee every single person on that beach could feel it. When I think about the crossing…that’s the moment I’m taken back to. It reminisces

through my core and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. That’s what I want more of and I will continue to cross for that reason until I can’t anymore.

Accomplishment typically describes an internally motivated goal. The Crossing was motivated by a little girl…Piper. So what does that make completing the Crossing For A Cure? To me…it’s simple. It’s an act of love. Every single person who participated in any form performed an act of love whether they recognize it or not. Now that’s love.

I can proudly and confidently say I now know what it means to live a courageous life full of love.

My heart will forever go out to all of the crossing Crusaders and those involved. Thank you from the absolute bottom of my heart for supporting my family and I in this epic adventure we like to call the Crossing For A Cure!

It all started with an idea. Travis, Piper’s Dad was told by Doctors that the Ocean has healing benefits for CF patients. Travis decides he is going to cross from the Bahamas to Florida on a standup paddleboard to raise awareness about Piper’s new medical diagnosis Cystic Fibrosis. Travis had never been on a paddleboard before.

He builds a small team who love and support him and Piper – the very first Crossing Crusaders and Crew. They had two support boats – Captains Lee Heaton and Brad Nolin with Crew Lori Griffith, Ed Pence, Tony Cinilia and Robert Suit.

conquers all HAVING A twelve year old nephew with Cystic Fibrosis (Justin Horton) – this cause & event brought on deep meaning for me. Since Justin’s CF diagnosis at birth I knew that I could never cure CF. Heck, I had never even heard of CF. Since his birth, I have tried to do things that promote awareness of CF & raise money towards assisting the CF community. I will continue to do so.

When I first learned of Crossing For A Cure I was so excited to learn more and be a part of it. I eagerly waited until the next Crossing was announced. The decision to participate was one of the greatest decisions of my life. Life changing! Being on the committee & meeting the people I have met has been very special to me. I simply cannot say enough about how I feel about this group of people. Family!

I sincerely thank Travis Suit for having the drive & vision to orchestrate this. I love you brother. The Piper’s Angels Foundation is helping move the needle. I encourage all to support it.

Ask questions. Get involved. Spread the word. You will not regret it. I am in my late 40’s and had very limited experience with SUP. I dove in head first, asked questions, ordered a custom 14 foot stand up paddleboard, had Justin’s signature put on the front, bought the surrounding equipment necessary & started practicing.

Along my way, convinced a few others to join the event too! Less than twelve months later, I paddled across the Gulf Stream with an army of angels from all walks of life. Different ages, different skill levels, different ethnicities. The selfless support of each other was heartfelt.

It was a thing of beauty on so many

different levels. That weekend in Bimini was electric. There was a positive buzz in the air. Contagious. Friendships were formed. Sharing a room & paddling alongside a friend with CF is something I will never forget. Joe Mitchell – so damn proud of you. EPIC! For many including myself – this was not about competition. Much bigger than that.

We all were pulling for each other.

Was it challenging - yes. Was it worth enduring – yes! Our brothers & sisters living with CF endure so much more.

When I hit that beach – the emotion poured. Something that I will live with for the rest of my days. It was about supporting a meaningful cause & all the CF warriors. Their lives matter. Their struggle teaches us all. Their mark will not be forgotten. Love conquers all.
