Jack Bell Jr., President / CEO and Nathan Wachtel, CFO of Masters’ Supply, Inc.
THE CHALLENGE Masters’ Supply had no formal job descriptions for its employees. Louisville, Kentucky-based Masters’ Supply, an employee-owned plumbing wholesale and retail distributor established in 1939 with eight branch locations and 133 employees, had no procedure in place for providing employees with formal job descriptions. “Having documented descriptions of job duties and expectations is an important part of an employee’s understanding of responsibilities and expectations,” Masters’ Supply President Jack Bell Jr. says. “In some smaller branches [Masters’ has 7 branches in Kentucky and one in Indiana] where cross training is part of the daily operations, an employee may have two descriptions to reflect his or her role. In addition, the job descriptions convey to an employee that their presence, performance and contributions have an impact on their company’s success.”

provider. Masters’ mission and vision statements were created to reflect our high regard for these values as well.”
Bell Jr. has a strong vision statement for Masters’ Supply, and having these job descriptions for each employee helped support that vision in a major way.
This is not the first time Masters’ has partnered with ASA University on education and training solutions that have greatly benefited the 82-year-old company.
“The ASA job descriptions are unique in that they describe the mechanics of performing a job,” Bell Jr. explains. “They encompass the mindset and demeanor of an employee who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the company as a leader, team member and customer-service
“ASA offers in-depth and extensive training for a number of positions in our company,” Bell Jr. says. “The job descriptions were created with great detail, outlining both the duties of the positions, and the interpersonal and leadership requirements for job success.”
ASA University provided Masters’ Supply a wide array of job descriptions to use for many roles. Every current Masters’ employee was given a job description with their name on it. At the advice of ASA-U training specialists, managers reviewed the descriptions with employees, provided employees with a copy to keep, and submitted a signed copy for their personnel file to human resources. New hires are now provided a job description as part of their initial orientation and review of new-hire paperwork. “Every position in the company is important, and every employee has the opportunity to contribute to the success of Masters’ Supply,” Bell Jr. says. “Employees are an investment in today and the future of the company. Regardless of their role, everyone needs to know what the expectations are and what goals are to be achieved. Documenting those ideas gives a reference point, as well as a clear expectation of the job.”
