IMPORTANT ORGANISATIONS, PROGRAMS AND CONCEPTS
ATAR
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a numerical rank between 0 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s academic position relative to all other students completing Year 12. It is derived from performance in ATAR courses and is used by universities as a primary criterion for admission into undergraduate programs.
TISC
TISC (Tertiary Institutions Service Centre) is the organisation in Western Australia that processes applications for undergraduate university courses on behalf of participating universities. It manages the application process, allowing students to submit course preferences and receive offers based on their eligibility and ranking.
TISC considers a range of entry pathways, with the ATAR being the primary method for direct university entry. In addition, students may gain admission through alternative pathways such as portfolio entry, enabling programs, or university preparation courses, depending on the institution and course requirements.
TISC calculates the ATAR using results from a student’s ATAR courses.
It follows the process below:
• School assessment and external exam results are combined to give a final score for each subject
• These scores are then scaled to ensure fairness across different subjects
• TISC adds a student’s best four scaled scores (plus any bonus points) to create the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA)
• The highest possible TEA is 430, achieved by combining the best four scaled ATAR subject scores (maximum 400) with available bonus points, including 10% bonuses for Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist, and a Language course where applicable
• The TEA is then converted into an ATAR, which ranks the student compared to others in the same year group
The following table shows the TEA and ATAR Relationship:
VETDSS
VETDSS (Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students) enables students to undertake vocational learning as part of their secondary schooling while completing their WACE.
These programs focus on practical, industry-based learning that allows students to develop job-ready skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications, supporting pathways into further training, apprenticeships, or employment.
WORKPLACE LEARNING
Workplace Learning provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in a real work environment through structured placements as part of their senior secondary studies. As an endorsed program, it contributes towards the WACE and supports the development of employability skills, confidence, and a clearer understanding of potential career pathways.
Further information regarding these concepts, programs and opportunities will be provided by the Pathways team as required.
To contact a member of the Pathways team, please visit the schools contacts information.
