FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Electives
When can I select my electives?
Online elective selections will open in Week 1 of Term 3 and close on 7 August 2026. Information regarding the selection process, including instructions for completing online preferences, will be communicated to students via email and the Daily Notices.
Do I need to select the elective to be able to study the subject in Year 11?
Only Italian requires study in Year 10 to continue as a Year 11 student. Some Year 10 Major electives are recommended as prerequisites for ATAR and General courses in Year 11.
However, this is not a requirement. In fact, the elective is often a good ‘taster’ to see if you like a subject. Consider it a “try before you buy”.
Do I need to submit my elective requests early?
There is no benefit to submitting elective choices early. Each submission received before the deadline will be given equal weighting when allocating classes.
Do I need parent permission to complete my selected electives?
Parent sign-off is not required as part of the selection process.
Some electives incur an additional resources cost.
If these are selected, parents will be contacted after the request period to ensure they are supportive of your elective choices.
If changes are required, this will not impact your ability to access other electives after the deadline.
What happens if an elective is oversubscribed?
The College will make every effort to accommodate student elective preferences.
To maximise opportunities for participation, this may include:
• Offering an elective as a minor course rather than a major course
• Offering an elective as a major course rather than a minor course
• Introducing semester-based courses to allow more students to participate These approaches help provide as many students as possible with access to their preferred electives.
In some instances, where demand exceeds available places, students may be allocated one of their reserve elective selections.

Can I change electives during the year?
Movements can potentially be made in early Term 1.
Students may request an elective change and this will be approved if there are available spaces.
If students have selected an Independent Learning Project, English Tutorial or Math Tutorial they will be permitted to change elective upon the completion of their goal, even if this is achieved after the subject change deadline for electives.
Some movement between electives may be possible between Semester 1 and 2.
When will I find out which electives I have been allocated?
Elective allocations will be confirmed in Term 4. All electives require only standard stationery items, meaning that elective allocations are not required to be able to complete booklist orders.
Who should I contact if I have any additional questions?
Questions about the subject selection process should go to Mrs Barbara Granville, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Principal, at bgranville@cbcfremantle.wa.edu.au.
