A Legacy in Motion For 125 years, CBC Fremantle has stood as more than a place of learning. It has been a place of belonging. A place of growth. A place where generations of students have walked the same paths, each leaving their mark, while carrying forward the legacy of those who came before them.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we also recognise something greater: that the story of CBC is not held in the past alone - it lives on, every day, in the people, the spaces, and the traditions that continue to shape our College.

This moment - both an ending and a beginning - offers a rare opportunity: to reflect with gratitude, and to look ahead with confidence.

Since its founding, CBC Fremantle has been guided by a clear purpose: to educate young men of character, faith, and integrity.

Throughout this edition, we explore some of the people, places, and events that have shaped CBC.

CBC Fremantle is defined by its ability to endure, adapt, and grow, and we celebrate 125 years with great pride.

That purpose has endured through decades of change, through different eras, different leaders, and different generations of students. While the world around us has evolved, the heart of the College has remained constant.

The story is still being written. Every student who walks through our gates becomes part of it. In every classroom.

On every playing field. In every connection formed within our community, CBC continues to prepare young men ready to make their mark on the world.

It is a living legacy woven into the fabric of college life.

It lives in the brotherhood formed in classrooms and corridors. In the quiet reflection within the Chapel. In the daily experiences of the students and in the pride carried by our CBC alumni.

This year marks a particularly significant moment in our journey.

We honour the leadership of our current Principal Domenic Burgio, who leaves us at the end of 2026.

His tenure has shaped the College in profound and lasting ways. Under his guidance, CBC has continued to grow not only in size and reputation, but in its commitment to pastoral care, educational excellence, and community connection.

At the same time, we prepare to welcome a new Principal in 2027, marking the beginning of the next chapter in the life of the College.

A Chapter That Changed Us On his first day as Principal in 2018, Domenic Burgio walked into a college he already knew well, but this time in a role that would ask everything of him.

As the 28th Principal of CBC Fremantle, his appointment marked a continuation of leadership and also the beginning of something quietly transformative. Having previously served as Vice Principal - Pastoral Care, Dom brought with him a good understanding of the College, its people, its traditions, and its potential.

At the centre of Dom’s leadership has always been people. His impact at CBC cannot be measured by buildings, or programs, or milestones - though there have been many of these. It is clearly seen in the way he has shaped the culture of the College: one grounded in care, connection, and genuine belonging.

What followed was not a dramatic reinvention, but something more lasting: a strengthening of identity, a deepening of community, and a vision that would honour the past while guiding CBC confidently into the future.

Dom has led with an openness that is rare in any leader.

He is known for being present and approachable, often giving his personal mobile number to parents, and for building relationships that extend beyond formal roles.

For him, leadership is about connection.

And that connection is personal. His commitment to the College is more than just professional, it is rooted in love, pride, and a sense of responsibility to those in his charge, those who came before, and those who will follow.

His care for the community is perhaps most powerfully felt in moments of vulnerability. Whether speaking to students, staff, or families, Dom leads with honesty and emotion. In particular, his Mother’s Day addresses have become a defining example of his character, moments that have resonated genuinely, often leaving barely a dry eye in the room.

Through these moments, and countless others, he has reminded the community that strength is found in authenticity.

Throughout his time as Principal, Dom has remained committed to the development of the whole person.

While academic success has always been important, under his leadership, the focus on forming young men of character with integrity, respect, and compassion has only grown stronger.

The values of CBC Fremantle are not simply spoken ideals - they are lived daily. Students are encouraged to understand what it means to be a gentleman: someone who leads with humility, treats others with respect, and contributes meaningfully to their community.

From the revitalisation of key learning areas to provide contemporary, inspiring spaces, to the restoration of historic buildings, and the reimagining of spaces like the Marshall Wing and the Ellen Street entrance, each decision has reflected a balancing of tradition with progress.

Pastoral care has been central to this vision. Dom has championed an environment where every student is known, supported, and valued - where wellbeing is prioritised alongside achievement, and where each boy is given the opportunity to grow into the best version of himself.

In countless ways, Dom has honoured the legacy entrusted to him and extended it. He has guided the College through a period of reflection and renewal - honoured the traditions that define it and laid the foundations for what comes next.

While culture has been at the heart of his leadership, Dom’s impact is also visible in the physical transformation of the College.

Many of the significant building and development initiatives seen across the campus today were first envisioned during his time as Vice Principal and brought to life under his leadership.

Because of his leadership, the story of CBC Fremantle continues - stronger, prouder, and ready for what lies ahead.

In every sense, he has been a bridge: connecting generations, strengthening community, and ensuring that the values of the past continue to shape the students of tomorrow.

History Continues On Moments of transition in a school’s history are never just about change, they are about continuity.

The appointment of Adrian Correia as Principal from 2027 represents both the arrival of a new leader, and the continuation of a story shaped by those who have come before him.

It is a moment that looks forward with confidence that the values, traditions, and spirit of the College will remain in steady hands.

For Adrian, this appointment is not the beginning of his relationship with CBC Fremantle, it is a return.

His connection to the College was shaped some years ago through contribution to its culture and its defining programs as a teacher. His involvement in The Rite Journey, a program that has become central to the formation of CBC students, runs deep.

From TRJs introduction in 2012, Adrian played a key role in shaping the ceremonies and experiences that have guided countless boys through moments of reflection, challenge, and growth. His work helped give life to the College’s enduring vision: ‘Today’s Boys…Tomorrow’s Gentlemen’.

For Adrian, the TRJ philosophy speaks to responsibility, dignity, service, and the transformation of young men into people of character.

Adrian’s approach to leadership is grounded in presence, authenticity, and faith.

He believes that a Principal must be fully immersed in the life of the College - visible, approachable, and connected to its people. His commitment to modelling Gospel values through both word and action aligns closely with the spirit that defines CBC Fremantle.

Support and Assistance CBC’s stainless-steel water feature is etched with the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) apology, which was issued in 2017 to the survivors and victims of sexual abuse by members of the religious community and staff.

The formal apology was produced in consultation with survivors of abuse and seeks to provide opportunities for open and honest conversations about a shameful and destructive reality in the history of Christian Brothers’ schools and help to re-establish trust.

CBC Principal Mr Domenic Burgio, said the artwork is a message of hope for past, present and future students.

“We don’t shy away from the past. We cannot change what happened – but we can make sure it never happens again,” Mr Burgio said.

In a bid to ensure the College community is aware of the deeply sad history of institutionalised abuse and in order to do everything possible to ensure it is never repeated, the College also runs child safety programs for students.

“As always, the safety and wellbeing of our students is our absolute priority and we continue to deliver the high standard of care and education we provide each day at CBC Fremantle.

We believe that knowledge is power, and we seek to provide our students with the tools to be able to stand up for anything that they believe is wrong. With our parents’ support, we make sure our boys learn from the past in order to build a better world for the future,” Mr Burgio said.

A Campus Reimagined For 125 years, CBC Fremantle has grown alongside the community it serves.

Throughout its history, the College has evolved to meet the needs of each generation of students while remaining grounded in the values, traditions, and spirit that have defined it since foundation.

Marshall Wing 2025

A significant example of this can be seen in the transformation of the Marshall Wing.

Once an ageing section of the College, every classroom and corridor has been stripped back to its bare bones, revitalised, and reimagined to meet the needs of today’s students while remaining connected to the College’s history.

The result is a modern learning precinct featuring bright, contemporary classrooms and wider, safer traffic areas that improve movement throughout the building. The design places equal emphasis on functionality, student wellbeing, and the creation of welcoming spaces that encourage learning and connection.

Students also benefit from a newly enclosed and upgraded café area in front of the Canteen, providing a gathering space that can be enjoyed throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

While the transformation has delivered modern facilities, it also serves as one of the most visible celebrations of the College’s heritage.

Facing Ellen Street, three striking glass panels celebrate the people and moments that have shaped CBC Fremantle. One honours Blessed Edmund Rice, while the remaining panels showcase historic photographs spanning sport, the arts, learning, faith and community life. Together they create a visual timeline that connects past and present through imagery, light and storytelling.

The renewal of the Marshall Wing naturally extended to the College’s Ellen Street frontage. As one of the most recognisable faces of the College, the entrance was long overdue for revitalisation. The result is a contemporary and welcoming entry statement.

At the centre of the design sits a powerful symbol of continuity: the original CBC crest.

Rather than introducing a new identity, the decision was made to celebrate the historic crest that generations of students, staff, and alumni have proudly associated with CBC Fremantle. Positioned within a modern architectural setting, the crest is a visual reminder that while the College continues to evolve, its identity remains unchanged.

The transformation of the campus extends beyond new flooring, fresh paint, or upgraded facilities. At its heart is a commitment to creating spaces that support the way young people learn, collaborate, and grow.

Across the College, traditional classrooms are now light-filled contemporary learning environments. Large glass walls and open sightlines create a greater sense of connection between students, teachers, and the wider school community.

The design philosophy is intentional.

Learning should be visible, collaborative, and welcoming.

In many classrooms, traditional teacher desks have been removed, reflecting a modern approach to education that prioritises relationships and accessibility. Classroom spaces have been designed to encourage engagement and conversation. Teachers are present alongside their students, fostering an environment where boys feel supported, known, and comfortable.

For students beginning their journey at CBC Fremantle, the Year 7 precinct has been enhanced to celebrate creativity and achievement. Dedicated display spaces showcase student artwork throughout the learning area, transforming corridors into galleries of student expression.

render removed, stonework restored through meticulous tuckpointing, and the building carefully painted to preserve its historic character. Six new Celtic crosses were also constructed and installed on the roofline, further enhancing the Chapel’s architectural significance.

These displays celebrate student achievement and creativity while reinforcing that every boy has something valuable to contribute to the life of the College.

The restoration stands as a lasting gift from past generations to future ones, a powerful demonstration of the affection and pride that exists within the CBC community.

In appreciation of the generosity shown by donors, plaques recognising gifts of more than $1,000 were installed within the Chapel foyer. Many year groups joined together to support the project, ensuring their connection to the College will be remembered.

The commitment to renewal continued beyond the Chapel. In 2025, the former Religious Education office was converted into contemporary classroom spaces, while outdated external stairs were replaced with a safer, undercover accessway designed to complement the surrounding heritage architecture. The result is a practical improvement that respects the visual integrity and character of one of the College’s most treasured precincts.

Few buildings hold greater significance within the College than the Blessed Edmund Chapel. Completed in 1882 and constructed from local limestone, the heritage-listed Chapel has stood as a place of prayer, reflection, celebration, and remembrance for generations of the CBC community. In 2023, a major restoration project returned this iconic building to its former glory.

Made possible through the extraordinary generosity of CBC Old Boys, their families, and the wider community, the restoration involved extensive structural and aesthetic works. Foundations were strengthened,

We did not Rebuild. We Respected, Renewed, and Evolved.

For many decades, the Brothers’ House was home to the Christian Brothers who dedicated their lives to educating generations of CBC students. As such, the building occupies a special place in the history and identity of the College.

Today, while its purpose has evolved, its significance remains unchanged.

The building now serves as a workplace for the College’s Allied Staff, with upgrades ensuring it continues to meet the needs of a modern school community while honouring its rich heritage.

Inside, the restoration has embraced the stories of those who came before. Historic photographs line the hallways, creating a visual journey through the College’s past and connecting staff and visitors with those who have helped shape CBC Fremantle.

One of the most significant elements of the renewal has been the restoration of the former Brothers’ Chapel on the second floor. Carefully returned to its original character and charm, the space now serves as the College Boardroom. In this new role, the room continues its tradition as a place of reflection, discussion, and stewardship, linking the College’s history with the decisions that will guide its future.

The care shown internally has been matched by extensive work to the building’s exterior. Skilled stonemasons undertook intricate ribbon-pointing to preserve and protect the original limestone, ensuring the historic fabric of the building endures. Fresh paint, roof repairs, and a range of restoration works have further revived the building’s appearance, revealing many of the architectural details that had faded with time.

The revival of the Brothers’ House demonstrates how historic spaces can continue to serve a meaningful purpose, ensuring the legacy of those who built the College remains part of daily life.

As CBC Fremantle celebrates 125 years of educating generations of young men, attention naturally turns to the opportunities that lie ahead.

The story of the school has always been shaped by people who believed in its future. Parents who made sacrifices to provide opportunities for their sons. Staff who gave generously of their time and talents. Old Boys and Alumni who have remained connected long after graduation.

Together, their commitment has helped shape the CBC Fremantle we know today.

As we look towards the next chapter, we remain committed to creating the very best opportunities for future students and ensuring our school continues to grow in ways that honour its heritage while responding to the needs of a changing world.

To support this vision, CBC has established a taxdeductible Building Fund. While still in its early stages, the Fund provides an opportunity for members of our community to contribute directly to future development and improvement projects.

In addition, we are working towards the establishment of a tax-deductible Scholarship and Bursary Fund. This initiative will help provide access to a CBC education for talented young men of exceptional character who may otherwise be unable to enjoy the opportunities our College provides.

While a culture of giving has not always been a strong tradition at CBC, there is a real opportunity for our whole school community to help shape what comes next. In the spirit of the Edmund Rice tradition of service, generosity, and care for others, giving is one way we can each play a part in strengthening CBC Fremantle for those who follow.

Whether supporting future facilities, student opportunities, or scholarships, every contribution represents an investment in young people and in the future of the College. It is a powerful way to pay it forward.

Stories That Have Shaped Us For 125 years students have walked through the gates of CBC Fremantle, each leaving behind a story of their own.

Some stories are recorded in photographs. Others live on through treasured artefacts, honour boards, plaques, and memorials. Together, they reflect the history of a community built over time, shaped by faith, achievement, service, and belonging.

These objects are far more than decorations or historical records. They are memory anchors. They connect today’s students with those who came before, reminding us that we are all part of something larger.

What students see every day shapes who they become.

A young boy passing an Honour Board may see his older brother’s name. A student standing before a memorial may pause to reflect on the sacrifices of others. A photograph from decades ago may reveal that while uniforms, buildings, and hairstyles change, the spirit of the College remains remarkably familiar.

As CBC Fremantle celebrates 125 years, preserving these stories has become more important than ever. By restoring artefacts, recognising our history, and creating new spaces of remembrance and celebration, we ensure that tomorrow’s students will understand where we have come from.

The following stories highlight some of the people, achievements, and moments that continue to shape the identity of CBC Fremantle today.

Honour Boards occupy a special place within a school.

For generations, Honour Boards stood as visible reminders of excellence, leadership, commitment, and service within the life of CBC Fremantle. They were seen by students every day, quietly reminding them of a standard worth aspiring to.

In recent years, many of the historic Honour Boards have been carefully restored and reinstated. In restoring them, CBC Fremantle ensures that the achievements of yesterday will continue to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.

Collectively, with the newer Honour Boards from 2007, they include records of College Captains dating from 1954, Dux awards recognising academic excellence from 1954, Sportsman of the Year, and Sports Service Award recipients, and the prestigious Uwe Stengel Award for Musician of the Year.

These boards preserve the memory of a chapter of CBC history that no longer physically exists.

DR GLEN POWER Rhodes Scholar 1992

Among the most unique recognitions are the CBC Rhodes Scholars, recognising Glen Power (Class of 1984) in 1992, and Riley Faulds (Class of 2016) in 2023, whose achievements place them in an elite group of scholars both nationally and internationally.

Particularly significant also are the restored Primary and Junior School Honour Boards.

These boards preserve the memory of a chapter of CBC history that no longer physically exists. They recognise Head Boys, Dux recipients, Sports Stars and Peer Award winners spanning from 1982 to 1996.

Following the closure of the Tuckfield Street campus in the mid-1990s, many reminders of the College’s primary years gradually disappeared from daily view. The reinstatement of these boards allows that important chapter to remain connected to the life of the College today.

More than a record of names, they also represent the values the College continues to nurture: leadership, perseverance, academic excellence, service, and character.

In Honour and Remembrance Throughout its history, CBC Fremantle has produced young men who have gone on to serve their communities in countless ways.

The names included on the memorial have been carefully researched by CBC Old Boy and military historian Andrew Pittaway OAM (Class of 1990).

These include Old Boys who answered a different call: service to their nation during times of war.

For students who pass the memorial each day, it serves as an important reminder that courage, sacrifice, and service are not abstract concepts. They are qualities demonstrated by former CBC students who once sat in the same classrooms and walked the same grounds.

The newly established Honour Roll stands as a permanent tribute to those former students who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I (initially known as The Great War), World War II, and the Korean War. Their names now occupy a permanent place of honour within the College, ensuring their service and sacrifice will continue to be remembered.

Among them is Peter Casserly (Class of 1915) who served with the Australian Imperial Forces in France during World War 1 and later became the last surviving Australian to have served on the Western Front.

His passing in 2005 at the age of 107 marked the end of a significant chapter in Australia’s military history, yet his connection to CBC remains an enduring source of pride. Peter was farewelled with a State Funeral at St Patrick’s Basilica.

In a school setting, remembrance carries particular significance. It provides an opportunity to connect history with character, encouraging young people to reflect on what it means to contribute to something greater than themselves.

Their service helped shape the world we know today. Their legacy lives here.

Sport has always been woven into the fabric of CBC Fremantle. Since its earliest days, the playing field, court, track, and pool have provided opportunities to pursue excellence, develop character, build resilience, enjoy teamwork, and foster leadership.

This year, CBC is proud to have established a Sporting Hall of Fame, recognising alumni whose achievements have reached the highest levels of competition while remaining true to the values learned during their time at the College.

The Hall of Fame honours ten extraordinary Old Boys whose accomplishments span Australian Rules football, basketball, water polo, athletics, horse racing, and golf.

Among them are football legends Bernie Naylor (Class of 1940), John Gerovich (Class of 1955), Con Regan (Class of 1951), Brian Ciccotosto (Class of 1965) and Gerard Neesham OAM (Class of 1971), whose impact extends far beyond the playing field through leadership, innovation, and service to their communities.

Olympians David Neesham OAM (Class of 1963) and John Baguley (Class of 1958) represented Australia on the world stage, inspiring generations of athletes through their dedication and achievement.

Champion jockey John ‘JJ’ Miller (Class of 1950) became one of Australia’s most successful riders, while Martin Cattalini (Class of 1990) represented the Australian Boomers and enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in National Basketball League history.

The youngest inductee, golfer Oliver Goss (Class of 2011), rose to international prominence as one of Australia’s leading amateur golfers, competing at

Together, these ten Old Boys form the inaugural CBC Fremantle Sporting Hall of Fame, recognised not only for their sporting success, but for their character.

The Hall of Fame extends beyond a single display.

Visitors entering the College Gymnasium are now welcomed by a series of striking images installed across the glass façade leading to the upper level. Featured are former students who have excelled in a diverse range of sporting codes showcasing the breadth of talent that has emerged from CBC Fremantle. These include AFL players alongside representatives from athletics, basketball, baseball, soccer, rowing, surfing, swimming, and American football.

By placing these colourful displays of sporting achievement within one of the most active spaces on campus, the College is ensuring the qualities of character, perseverance, and commitment to excellence remain visible aspirations for the young men who follow.

The Girls of CBC For most of its 125-year history, CBC Fremantle has been a school for boys. Yet among the many chapters that make up the College’s history is one that stands out for its uniqueness and significance.

Following the closure of Our Lady of the Missions School on Tuckfield Street in the early 1980s, sixteen young women were welcomed into the CBC community to complete their secondary education. While their time at the College was brief, the impact of their presence remains an important part of CBC history.

For the graduating classes of 1981 and 1982, CBC became more than a place of transition. It became a community where friendships were formed, opportunities were created, and futures were shaped.

This arrangement was made possible through the leadership and vision of former Deputy Principal Doug McKirdy, whose commitment to supporting young people ensured these students could complete their education during a period of uncertainty and change.

For many years, this extraordinary chapter remained largely unknown to those outside the alumni community.

Today, as the College reflects on its history, it is fitting that the contribution of these young women is being recognised and celebrated. Their presence represents more than an interesting historical footnote. It reflects the values that have long defined CBC Fremantle: community, compassion, inclusivity, and a commitment to supporting young people when they need it most.

As CBC celebrates 125 years, their story is being given the recognition it deserves.

The women who graduated from CBC in 1981 and 1982 will always hold a unique place within the history of our College. Their experience reminds us that history is not only found in buildings and records, but also in the people whose lives intersected with the College in meaningful ways.

From the President As we gather in this milestone year to celebrate 125 years since the founding of CBC Fremantle in 1901, I am reminded of the extraordinary privilege it is to serve as President of the Old Boys and Alumni.

As a student who spent eight formative years at the College, I look back with immense pride and gratitude.

CBC Fremantle shaped me, grounded me, and instilled in me the values that continue to guide my personal and professional life. To stand here now, nearly forty years after graduating in 1987, and witness the College’s evolution is both humbling and inspiring.

Since my time as a student, the College has undergone a transformation so significant that parts of it are almost unrecognisable. Yet, what has remained steadfast is its heart: the traditions, the heritage, and the ethos of Edmund Ignatius Rice.

Much of this transformation has occurred under the exceptional leadership of Mr Domenic Burgio, who retires this year after a distinguished tenure as Principal.

Dom has overseen a period of renewal that has been transformative: honouring the College’s rich heritage, preserving the traditions that have shaped generations of young men, confidently embracing the future, and modernising the College for the next era.

Dom has been a steady, principled, and deeply respected figure whose influence can be seen not only in the physical evolution of the campus, but also in the culture, spirit, and direction of the College. His commitment has left an indelible legacy, and I extend my heartfelt thanks for his service, his wisdom, and his unwavering dedication.

On behalf of the Old Boys and Alumni, and personally, I extend my deepest thanks to Dom. It has been a 32

pleasure and privilege to work alongside him during my presidency. We wish him every joy in retirement and look forward to seeing him remain connected to the College in whatever capacity he chooses.

Following Dom’s announcement of his impending retirement, I had the honour of serving on the selection panel tasked with appointing the next Principal of CBC Fremantle. After an exhaustive and rigorous process, the panel reached a unanimous decision: Mr Adrian Correia.

Adrian is no stranger to the CBC Fremantle family. His return has been met with genuine warmth and enthusiasm across the community. His leadership style, values, and vision align strongly with the College’s next chapter, and I am confident he will continue to build on the foundations laid by his predecessors. I formally congratulate Adrian on his appointment and look forward to working closely with him as CBC Fremantle enters its next era.

This year we also mourn the passing of Mr George Ayres, a devoted and longstanding member of the Old Boys’ community. George’s love for CBC Fremantle was unwavering, and his contributions over many decades enriched the alumni community and strengthened the bonds between past students. We honour his memory and extend our condolences to his family. George’s legacy will remain part of the fabric of our community.

CBC Fremantle’s long history includes chapters that are painful and acknowledged with sincerity and responsibility. To any Old Boy who suffered abuse during their time at the College, I reiterate that our door remains

CBC Fremantle - 125 years strong and still forming good men. open. We will listen, we will support, and we will assist in any way necessary.

This acknowledgement does not diminish the College’s broader legacy of forming young men of character, compassion, and integrity. Rather, it strengthens our resolve to ensure that every student’s dignity is protected and honoured and that the mistakes of the past are never repeated.

The Old Boys and Alumni Committee has undertaken a comprehensive review of our awards program. Our aim is to ensure that we appropriately recognise the extraordinary achievements of past students across all fields—academic, sporting, philanthropic, professional, artistic, scientific, and beyond.

CBC Fremantle has produced leaders, innovators, and contributors of remarkable calibre. It is with immense pride that we prepare to honour these individuals in a refreshed and more inclusive awards framework.

Circles of Gold

David Bosci Class of 1971

10:56:15 am (AWST), Monday, 21 July 1969. The CBC Fremantle Junior class, under the supervision of Br Cleaver, was in the auditorium watching on a small black and white TV as Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon. The Daily News front page was three words: “Man on Moon”. 56 years, 8 months and 20 days later, now retired, I was streaming the splashdown of the Artemis 11 capsule. Memories of the years I spent at CBC came to mind. So, I decided to seek an answer to a long-standing question … was my name on the Honour Board as 1971 Dux of the College?

In 2024, my father, Raymond Bosci, passed away aged 92.

He was at CBC Fremantle from 1945 to 1947. Amongst my father’s effects, I found two items of great personal interest. A gold Dux medal awarded to me in 1971, and a 15-karat gold Clover ring which was made in the 1920s from gold that his father Stefano had mined in the Kalgoorlie gold fields.

Pieter Krygger, born 1823, migrated from Antwerp, Belgium in 1851 to the new goldfields discovered in Ballarat, Victoria. He married Isabella Thompson, an Irish lass who had migrated to Australia in 1852. Pieter was a miner, later working as a cook, dishwasher, and wine-seller, before becoming the publican of the Antwerp Hotel in Redan, Ballarat. Pieter and Isabella had eight children, the third Alexander Krygger, was born in 1868.

the Victoria Cross. After the war, Alexander’s second marriage was to Roslyn Maud Elizabeth Wood. They had nine children, including twins Ruby and Pearl. Ruby was my “Nana”.

The Kalgoorlie gold rush followed the June 1893 discovery of alluvial gold. Stefano Bosci was born in Tresivio, Italy in December 1893 and arrived in Western Australia in 1913.

Like many migrants who arrived by sea, his immigration is recorded at the Welcome Walls in Victoria Quay, Fremantle. He worked the Kalgoorlie Goldfields until the early 1920s, becoming an Australian citizen in 1922, and changing his name from Stefano to Stephen.

Ruby and Stephen were married at Alexander’s home, by now in Warwick Road, Bibra Lake in Western Australia.

They had fifteen children; Stephen, Reginald, Kitty, Nora, Raymond (my father), Eric, Peter, Rose, Ruby, Margaret, Brian, Christine, Jennifer, Hellen and Robyn. The boys all went to CBC Fremantle. The Bosci family lived in a classic weatherboard house in Elvira Street, Palmyra. Gerard Neesham and Mark Regan, who were later my classmates, also lived in the street.

Alexander married Lilias Elvina Smythe in 1889 in Ballarat and by the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899, he was living in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Alexander, an experienced marksman, joined the 1st Contingent of the Western Australian Mounted Infantry that was sent to South Africa. He saw action in the Eastern Cape Province in early 1900, where he distinguished himself as a hero and was ‘Mentioned in Dispatches’ (MiD) twice, with some suggesting that he would be awarded

Palma The period of the Great Depression was very hard for the family. Sometimes all they had to eat was bread and dripping, cooking was done on a wood fired stove and their hot water was plumbed through the stove.

The fridge was ancient with a classic freezer that always iced up. The laundry was a separate building between the house and the shed at the rear of the property, with a large copper for boiling clothes, a washboard and an old wringer washing machine. Laundry took up a large part of the day.

One toilet for the whole family was a single classic outdoor dunny some twenty yards from the back door. The house was to be demolished when the land was subdivided in 2000. The original owners of Amaze Miniature Park saved the house, transporting it to Barragup near Mandurah where it was turned into a tea-room.

Raymond married Dorothy Simmons in 1953. Before long I arrived, eldest of the next generation of the Bosci family.

I lived in the Palmyra house from age 9 to 12. There was a magnificent grape arbour at the rear, the vines were then some seventy years old and produced easily the best grapes I have ever had. Nana would make a huge batch of home-made grape jam each year. A thick slice of white bread from The Miller Bakehouse at the end of the street (now a small Museum run by the Melville History Society), topped with grape jam and layered with fresh cream was the best ever!

Fast forward to around late 2007, I was contemplating where to retire. Initially I moved to Stawell, Victoria.

After three years, I relocated to the Ballarat suburb of Sebastopol. With time to research my family history, I discovered that I was living about 4kms from Redan where Pieter Krygger was publican at the Antwerp Hotel in 1869 and about 3kms from the Ballarat Gold Mine, the same area that was extensively mined during the 1850s gold rush. Some 175 years earlier Pieter Krygger, would have been prospecting the locale where I now lived!

Fast forward again, I am now retired after a busy career in information and communications technology, across Australia and several overseas countries. Many more years of study after CBC in economics, avionics and later in philosophy and sociology. There are numerous special memories; working in Osaka, Japan; sailing off the Florida Keys, visiting Niagara Falls and Nova Scotia, Sydney Harbour bicentennial, a remote village market in PNG. When I received the ring and medal, I looked at my research with new eyes! Consider the history. My greatgreat-Grandfather, Pieter, migrated in 1851 to work the Ballarat Gold Fields near Sebastopol. His son, Alexander, moves to Western Australia. His daughter, Ruby, marries my paternal Grandfather, Stefano, who had worked on the Kalgoorlie Goldfields from 1913. Papa Bosci had this 15-karat ring made in the 1920s from gold, which according to family lore he had mined himself. The ring was given to my father, Raymond, and then was passed to me on his death. And the ring ended up back in Sebastopol where the family story started some 175 years earlier. What an amazing journey!

And a few weeks ago, my question was answered when I received a photo from the College which confirmed that my name did indeed end up on the Honour Board at CBC 55 years ago.

CBC has provided the foundations for many immigrant families and the generations that followed in this wonderful country, and I am proud to be among them.

Time hasn’t changed society’s need for good men and what makes a good man - a gentleman - is timeless.

In the 125th year since our foundation, CBC Fremantle continues its work to help raise good men with a strong sense of justice. The College is renowned for its academic endeavour, sporting achievements, contributions to the community and for the quality of its students.

The Order of Australia, introduced in 1975, recognises Australians who go above and beyond what is reasonably expected to make life better for others and who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Recipients come from across the country and from all walks of life.

While some are well-known, the majority are often unsung local heroes. Since the introduction of the OAM awards, a long list of CBC Fremantle old boys has been recognised for their service to others right back to the mid-1930s.

Peter Grosser Class of 1968

Peter Grosser, Class of 1968, was awarded an OAM for Service to Australian Rules Football in the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2025. Peter, a North Fremantle Football Club stalwart has worn many hats throughout his more than 50-year association with the North Fremantle Amateur Football Club - as a player, coach, president, vice-president, general manager, bar manager, and a dual life member.

Peter has played a significant role in the wider amateur football community and is also a tireless advocate for inclusion in sport. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Integrated Football Competition for players with disabilities and, in recognition of his work, the premiership trophy in the competition proudly bears his name: the Peter Grosser Cup. Among his many contributions is also the organisation of the annual ANZAC Day remembrance ceremony at the North Fremantle Fallen Soldiers Memorial, honouring the 13 club footballers lost in World War I. In 2016, Peter was awarded League Life Membership, adding to his North Fremantle Life Membership, and in 2019, Peter was inducted into the Perth Football League Hall of Champions, a fitting recognition for a man whose service has always been driven by a simple love for the game and an unwavering community spirit.

Peter was a member of the CBC Fremantle team who travelled to Peru in 2017 staying with the Christian Brothers and working in the local community to build a home for a family in need.

John Iriks (Johannes Maria) Class of 1966

John Iriks, Class of 1966, was awarded an OAM for Service to the Community of Kwinana, Western Australia, in the January 2026 Australia Day Honours. John’s family migrated from The Netherlands and arrived in Kwinana in 1953. Both of his parents spent their lives serving others in multiple activities, setting John a strong role model of community service from an early age. This message was reinforced during his school years at CBC and later too by his parents-in-law, who were also involved in social and community welfare.

John himself has been involved in countless community endeavours and has spent his life serving others with his wife Chris by his side. His deep Christian faith, shared with his wife and both sets of their parents, has taught him to serve rather than be served and he continues to be a strong advocate of volunteering and support.

John is an Honorary Freeman of the City of Kwinana. He has been a member of Rotary Kwinana for more than 45 years, President three times, and is an active member in the Parish of St Vincent’s Catholic Church. Fittingly, Rotary’s motto is “Service above self”. John is extremely proud to have been of service to the community he has lived in for over 70 years.

Ben Mitchell Class of 2020

Ben and Min Woo Lee

Ben has had a supportive and unique journey at CBC. In his final year (2020), he was encouraged to explore different trades through work experience. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for turf management at Meadow Springs Golf Club.

Ben completed a four-week placement with the club, after which he was invited to continue working during the school holidays. After making a strong impression, he was offered an apprenticeship to commence immediately, following his graduation from CBC. When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Ben says he finds it extremely rewarding and takes pride in contributing to such a highly regarded and picturesque golf course. He has developed skills in turf and lawn care, reticulation, bunker maintenance, operating machinery, and navigating golfers while carrying out his work.

While the early starts can be challenging, Ben enjoys watching the sunrise over the course and appreciates the opportunity to see wildlife up close. He notes that many golfers underestimate the level of work that goes on

behind the scenes to maintain a course but says this is also part of what keeps the role interesting.

Meadow Springs Golf Course Superintendent and Ben’s manager, Mike Healy, says, “It’s been nearly two years since Ben completed his apprenticeship, and he is now an integral part of our turf maintenance team. It has been amazing to watch him grow from a shy teenager into a confident young man who embraces the challenges of working on a busy golf facility.”

Ben continues to build his knowledge and experience in turf management and now assists in mentoring new apprentices. Ben admits working on a golf course isn’t for everyone - but it is perfect for him. His love of the game has only grown, and being able to stay back after work to practise has helped lower his handicap. He has also had the opportunity to meet golfing personalities such as Min Woo Lee and Ron Chopper.

When asked for any final words, Ben says, “Next time you’re out on the course enjoying your round, give a nod to the greenkeepers.”

James (Jim) John McGowan Class of 1952

Jim was a well-known Fremantle identity, an unassuming and deeply humanitarian man who was remembered by many as the man whose idea it was to adorn the trees with Christmas lights on Fremantle’s Esplanade, Jim dearly loved the city of Fremantle and contributed much to the port over many years. He was a very good networker, and wherever he went, he made friends and contacts.

Jim completed his schooling at St Mary’s and Christian Brothers College. During childhood, he was sickly, asthmatic and overweight, and he would later say he was toughened up by the Brothers. He liked hockey but athletics was his forte and he went on to win a 220 yards (201m) State schoolboys’ title.

Jim began his working life at 14, initially with the railways, but he was then offered a job as a message boy with the Fremantle Port Authority where he never looked back, going on to study accountancy at night school before eventually being promoted to office manager. Jim spent more than 40 years with the authority, finishing his working life as liaison officer for special events such as the Whitbread Round the World Race and the 1983 America’s Cup, although his career was briefly interrupted by national service in the RAAF at Pearce.

He also developed a great interest in astronomy and spent many hours studying the night sky, but it was Fremantle and its history which was his first love. And in later years, his knowledge was put to good use, as a part-time tour guide at Fremantle prison.

Jim’s contribution to Fremantle was outstanding. He was on the board of the Fremantle Credit Union, a member of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and served Fremantle Hockey Club, Fremantle Athletic Club and the Port Surf Lifesaving Club in various capacities. He joined Fremantle Rotary Club in the 1980s and became its president.

Among his many groups and associations, Jim was also deeply involved with the CBC Fremantle Old Boys’ Association, where he was president for a number of years. Following his unexpected death in 2004, in honour of his commitment and valuable contribution, the Old Boy’s Bursary, which provides the opportunity for a student who would otherwise not be able to receive an education at CBC Fremantle, was named after him.

In 2026, the naming of the Bursary returns back to the Old Boys’ and going forward will now be known as the CBC Old Boys’ and Alumni Bursary.

As we close this remarkable 20-year chapter, the Old Boys’ and Alumni Committee extend their deepest gratitude and thanks to Jim’s wife, Lynnette, and to the McGowan family, for Jim’s memorable legacy.

Craig Wedd Class of 1976

Our class of about 50 boys started at CBC in Year 4 in 1968, with Mr Richard High being our year teacher. Mr High was an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, who managed to control a rather large class of boys, and who instilled in them a desire to learn.

As our class progressed to Year 6, we had Br Peter Hayes as our first of many Christian Brother teachers, with the stand-alone classroom being located near the eastern boundary of the school. We graduated to high school in the old two-storey building near the Brother’s house - memorable for being stifling in summer and freezing in winter with the rain making good ingress into the classrooms.

Quite a few students left after Year 10, as was relatively common in those days, and we welcomed a cohort of students from St Brendan’s, to complete their Year 11 and Year 12 studies, as their original school only went to Year 10. So, after some goings and comings and a few students repeating Year 11, we ended up with about 30 young men completing Year 12 in 1976.

Our recent reunion held in May was for all of the boys who had some part in our shared journey of being educated at CBC Fremantle. Many had not seen each other since leaving school, so it was heartening to have over 30 attendees on the night of the reunion, which was deliberately held “off campus”, to accommodate those that had less than happy memories of their time at CBC Fremantle.

The current Principal, Mr Domenic Burgio, generously gave of his time to join the group. He delivered a heartfelt speech that acknowledged past hurts but also emphasised the transition of CBC Fremantle into a desirable school destination and one that nurtures, rewards and guides current students during their time at CBC. The Class of 1976 50th Reunion was a special reconnection with some nostalgic memories, moments of reflection, and more than a bit of humour.

What was noticeable in the group was a real sense of belonging, and an interest in their fellow classmates, and a desire to hear other’s life stories since leaving school.

In my welcoming speech, I emphasised the values “Palma Virtuti” had taught us. Values such as humility, forgiveness, a sense of social justice, and a desire to help those less fortunate. These lessons were really a continuation of the values instilled in us at home.

Declan Stack Class of 1990

For Declan Stack, the journey from the classrooms and sporting fields of CBC Fremantle to a career in education has been filled with achievement, adventure, family, and, ultimately, a return to where it all began.

A member of the Class of 1990, Declan represented the College with distinction at numerous ACC Carnivals throughout the late 1980s. Two performances highlight his schoolboy career. In 1989 as a Year 11 student, Declan claimed 1st place in the Open category at the ACC Athletics Carnival. He backed this up in his final year, finishing 2nd overall in his age group and leading from the front as the 1990 Captain of both the Athletics and Cross Country Teams.

In 2001, Declan hung up his racing spikes for a change of pace, heading to England to embark on a new chapter.

He began working as an outdoor education instructor while earning his Physical Education degree at the University of Wolverhampton. This period also brought major personal milestones—marrying his wife, Karla, and welcoming their first daughter.

His passion for athletics continued well beyond the College gates. From 1992 to 2001, Declan trained with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) as a 400m specialist, launching himself onto the global stage.

The Stack family returned to Australia in 2011, eventually growing to include three more daughters. Throughout this time, Declan continued to dedicate himself to outdoor education, sharing his love for adventure and nature with young people.

His international career took flight at the 1992 World Junior Championships in Seoul, where he reached the 400m semi-finals and ran the crucial anchor leg to help the Australian Men’s 4 x 400m relay team finish 7th in the world.

Then, in 2023—more than three decades after his own graduation—Declan’s journey came full circle. He walked back through the gates of his old school, not as a student or an elite athlete, but as CBC Fremantle’s new Outdoor Education Teacher.

Domestic and international success quickly followed. In 1997, Declan finished second at the Australian National Championships and represented Australia at the World Student Games, reaching the 400m quarter-finals and anchoring the relay team to a sixth-place finish.

Today, Mr Stack can be found right here at the College, using his vast experiences from the world stage and the great outdoors to inspire, mentor, and shape a whole new generation of CBC students.

He reached the pinnacle of Australian track and field in 1998, winning the 400m National Title and earning selection for the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, where he reached the 400m quarter-finals.

From representing the College on the athletics track to representing Australia on the world stage, from studying and working overseas to raising a family, and finally returning to the school that helped shape him, Declan’s journey has come full circle.

Declan went on to represent Australia at the World Athletics Championships in 1999.

Damon Gabbedy Class of 1982

My Christian Brothers College journey started in Grade 4, from Corpus Christi, Myaree to CBC Fremantle, a family tradition following my father John and grandfather Tim. Uncles Peter, Paul and Mick also attended CBC Fremantle.

I have fond memories of my school days and time at CBC, and I still maintain close friendships with several schoolmates. My recollections are that the Brothers were firm but fair and taught respect, honesty and manners.

CBC was a very sporty environment, and I was involved in all sports. Football was a huge part of our lives with great comradery amongst the boys, and my parents John and Doris were also heavily involved, with Dad at one stage the coach and Mum, team manager/ club secretary, organising clean jumpers, half-time oranges, drinks and everything else. I also competed in swimming, athletics, tennis and interschool competitions. I was captain of the football team and swimming squad. Backstroke and freestyle were my specialties, and I was a very fast runner – stamina was not my strength! I have particularly fond memories of our teachers and coaches, Brother Shanahan, Brother Leake and Mr Chandler.

When I was about 15, one of our horses, Bynsaab, was in a big race - the Pinjarra Guineas which was run on a Wednesday during the school week. I had been taught not to lie, so I decided the best approach was to ask the Brothers for the day off to attend the races as our horse had a big chance of winning. I was surprised and excited to be given approval by Brother Shanahan on the proviso that I placed a $10 bet to win on our horse for him!

Bynsaab won, and everyone was happy – I may have even got a better report that term!

After school finished, although I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I enrolled in a business degree majoring in marketing at WAIT (the old Curtin University).

But privately I was still obsessed with horse racing.

Frustratingly, there were no courses or avenues to begin such a career. I was too big to be a jockey and as a city boy with no farm exposure I wasn’t into getting my hands dirty and doing manual labour mucking out stables. It was tricky to know what to do.

My path in life was heavily influenced by a decision my father made when I was about 10 or 12. The urban myth goes that he went out to buy a boat for the family and came back with a yearling thoroughbred racehorse – much to my mother’s horror!

Dad had an ex-Wesfarmers contact, John Chalmers, who had gone on to run Goodwood Bloodstock the thoroughbred sales and auction company. So, I offered to do free work experience during the university holidays to get a foot in the door of the racing industry. This went on for the entire summer break, and I kept nagging them to give me a job.

From then, I became obsessed with anything to do with horse racing and breeding, attending races and sales with my parents. My Mum would say if I could remember schoolwork details like I remembered horse breeding and race details I’d be a genius!

Eventually they relented and created a position for me doing pedigree research. This is the family history of each horse being offered in a catalogue and was precomputers, so everything was researched and handwritten – an extremely long and labour-intensive process.

Palma My original plan was to continue my marketing degree part-time but, much to my parent’s disgust, I never finished my degree after I got the full-time job at Goodwood. It was a great job and I was in heaven – somehow my hobby had become my career!

The horse racing industry is an exciting and fascinating industry where you are exposed to a lot of wealthy people invested in what is essentially their hobby. In those crazy days when Perth was flying, I was dealing with the likes of Robert Holmes a Court, Dallas Dempster, Laurie Connell, Peter Beckwith and John Roberts – just an ordinary kid who went to school at CBC Fremantle!

Over 5-6 years at Goodwood, I progressed from pedigree research to sales, selling broodmares, racehorses, foals, stallion shares – anything, and working very long hours. It was stimulating but exhausting, so taking some extended leave, I travelled to Europe and spent time working at Tattersalls in the UK, one of the biggest thoroughbred auction houses in the world.

For the past five years I have had a consulting role with MyRacehorse, a micro-syndicator with over 60,000 owners on their books. In conjunction with leading Melbourne trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy, we purchased a racehorse in an online auction for $305,000 called Half Yours who went on to win the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double last year. In the horse racing world, it doesn’t get any better than that! We are all now part of history.

My hobby and passion are still my career and even to this day I still feel blessed. It really has been a dream come true!

I’d like to thank CBC for my education and start in life and for the opportunity to tell my story. I would like to encourage all students to follow their passion – you never know where it may take you!

While abroad, I was offered a partnership deal with Debbie Evans, the owner of Belmont Bloodstock Agency. A savvy, astute, and independent bloodstock agent, she was everything I wanted to be and I jumped at the opportunity to join her. This proved to be life-changing, and with the right contacts around Australia and the world, we had a wonderful 9-10 years working together, mostly on the east coast. The Perth market was shrinking, however - I joke that all our big players (above) had died, went bankrupt, skipped the country or went to jail (not far from the truth) – and with Debbie’s encouragement, I moved to Melbourne in 1997. Debbie then gifted me her half of the business and for that I will be eternally grateful.

Melbourne has been my home for 29 years and I absolutely love it. I have met such interesting people from all walks of life including well-known racing identities such as Gai Waterhouse, Ciaron Maher, the Freedman’s and John Messara.

I am the Australasian-based representative of French bloodstock auction house Arqana, owned by the Aga Khan V. I make two trips to Paris and Deauville every year where I enjoy exposure to the international horse industry.

James Rock Class of 2021

I still remember 2016 pretty clearly. Moving from Melbourne to Perth felt like a big leap into the unknown.

I’d spent my first 12 years in Melbourne, and suddenly I was set to start Year 7 somewhere I’d never been. All because of Dad’s new job.

Walking into CBC for the first time, I didn’t know anyone, didn’t know the lay of the land, and definitely didn’t know what I was going to end up doing with myself. Like most kids starting at a new school, I just tried to find something familiar. For me, that was sport.

Those first few years at CBC, I found my footing the way I knew best, through football. AFL was everything. I had my sights set on being drafted, and the boys I surrounded myself with lived and breathed footy. That was our world.

Training, games, talking about games, pretending we were already professional athletes, you get the idea.

At the same time, though, I’d always had this quieter interest in film. I loved movies and I think that most do, but I think I watched them a bit differently. Every now and then I’d catch myself focusing less on the explosions or the scorelines and more on the people in the story. The performances, the way characters were built, the small moments. I didn’t really have the language for it back then, but something about it stuck. Then came Year 9 and The Outsiders.

I still remember walking into that classroom thinking I was far too cool to be there. Sat at the back, barely said a word while everyone else was reading. Mrs Jeffries asked who wanted to play the lead, Ponyboy every hand went up except mine. I just sat there, arms folded, doing my best impression of someone with better things to do.

As I was leaving, she stopped Mum and I. Asked if I’d thought about going for the main role. Said it could be a good opportunity. Maybe even steer me in the right direction. At the time, I wasn’t exactly the best student.

Pretty sport-focused, a bit restless, occasionally testing the boundaries. But something about that moment stuck.

So, I gave it a crack.

And that was it.

Something clicked almost straight away. The process, the work, building a character. It just made sense to me in a way nothing else really had. It was like discovering a completely different version of myself that had been sitting there the whole time, just waiting for an excuse to come out. That doesn’t mean it was smooth sailing.

I definitely copped it from a few of the boys, some of whom I knew, others I did not. Acting didn’t exactly line up with the footy-first mindset. There were a few comments, a bit of stick here and there. Actually, it was a lot of stick, and it really got to me. In retrospect, it made me back myself more. Nothing like a bit of doubt from others to quietly fuel you!

By Year 12, I was all in. I performed in another school production, The Witches and played Grandpa, which for a teenager, was a humbling experience. Nothing builds character quite like being aged about 70 years overnight.

But I loved it. Completely different role, completely different challenge, and it just confirmed it for me. It’s what I wanted to do.

Palma Before school even finished, I had my sights set on WAAPA. I was doing everything I could to get in.

Practising, preparing, overthinking, under thinking, the full experience And then I nearly blew it. Not the audition itself, but the submission.

I was down south at Leavers, trying to send through the correct link so they could actually watch my audition.

Hours of stress, terrible reception, emails sending (or not sending), refreshing inboxes like it was a full-time job. By the time it finally went through, I’d missed the deadline.

Didn’t get in. But then I got a call from the Head of the course after they eventually saw it. He told me it was strong. Said I didn’t meet the deadline, but he’d keep me in mind if anything changed.

All of it is now building on my showreel and sitting across professional platforms like Casting Networks and IMDb. Platforms I used to scroll through out of curiosity, and now I’m somehow on the other side of it.

But it’s still a grind. Self-tapes in bedrooms, callbacks, knockbacks, the occasional win. A lot of waiting. A lot of persistence. You’ve just got to stay in it. Keep showing up. Keep improving. Keep saying yes. And I still think back to that Year 9 kid sitting at the back of the room, convinced he was too cool to even put his hand up.

Funny how that works. All it really took was someone seeing something in me before I saw it in myself. And me deciding, eventually, to say yes.

A couple of weeks later, someone dropped out. I got the call up. I was off the bench! That’s where it really started.

I completed the Diploma of Acting in 2022 and the Diploma of Screen Performance in 2023. Those two years were unreal. Being surrounded by people who were just as driven, just as committed (and just as slightly unhinged in the best way possible) was something I hadn’t experienced before. Some of the most talented people I’ve met, and now some of my closest mates.

Easily the best two years of my life.

Straight out of WAAPA in 2024, I was lucky enough to land an agent, which felt like a pretty big moment.

Like I’d officially stepped into the industry rather than just knocking on the door. Since then, it’s been about building. Properly.

I’ve successfully landed roles across television and film, including work on Invisible Boys, in the feature film Proclivitas, and a bit part on The Twelve. I was also a part of the recent Make Smoking History commercial campaign that is still screening nationally.

Being on those sets, even in smaller roles, has been massive for me. Just being in the environment, watching how everything runs, learning from people who’ve been doing this at a high-level for years. It’s like a masterclass you don’t have to pay for.

Milad Keihanirad Class of 2008

My years at the College were filled with memorable experiences, strong friendships, and a sense of belonging that has stayed with me ever since.

I graduated in 2008 as runner-up Dux of my year - an achievement I look back on with pride, but one that was shaped by the support and encouragement of teachers, peers, and the broader school community.

Following school, I attended Murdoch University where I studied veterinary science. After six years of dedication and hard work, I graduated as a veterinarian and began my career as a small animal general practitioner.

Now, over a decade into my professional journey, I continue to work locally at Palmyra Veterinary Hospital, doing a job I genuinely love.

Fremantle has always been home for me - it’s where my roots are, and where my heart remains. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about serving the same community that helped shape who I am today. Whether it’s caring for family pets or simply being part of the local fabric, I feel fortunate to give back in my own way.

One of the most meaningful aspects of my time at CBC is the friendships I formed. To this day, my closest friends are those I met during my school years. We were a close-knit group, and it’s something truly special that we’ve remained such an important part of each other’s lives. We still catch up regularly, and those bonds have only strengthened over time.

CBC provided more than just an education - it instilled in us values that continue to guide me today.

The environment encouraged healthy competition, resilience, and a drive to always do your best, while also placing a strong emphasis on friendship, respect, and community. These lessons have been invaluable in both my personal and professional life.

It has now been 18 years since I last walked the halls of the College, yet my memories remain incredibly fond. It’s wonderful to see the continued growth and development of the school, and how it is evolving to provide even greater opportunities for its students. I often recommend CBC to friends and clients, as I truly believe it was one of the best decisions my parents made for me.

To the current students reading this: cherish your time at school. The friendships you form, the support you receive from your teachers, and the experiences you share are more meaningful than you may realise at the time. Appreciate those around you and always strive to be your best.

It’s inspiring to see that CBC continues to uphold its strong reputation, nurturing young men with values, leadership, and a sense of community that will serve them well into the future.

Paul La Spina Class of 1976

Paul La Spina, Class of 1976, and his wife Kim, whose father, Colin de San Miguel, was also a CBC old boy, volunteer with the Camino Salvado Pilgrimage. This year Paul drove the bus. The Camino Salvado Pilgrimage Trail has been going since 2008, winding its way from St Joseph’s Church Subiaco through Guildford, Walyunga National Park, Chittering Valley, Julimar Forest and on to New Norcia over seven days twice a year in August and September. Paul says, “if you seek a new adventure, volunteer bus drivers or committee members are always highly prized - all accommodation, transport and meals supplied”. Angel was abandoned as a newborn and left on the steps at the poor people’s entrance of the Parochial Church of San Miguel in Vittoria, Spain. Baptised in 1848 and brought up by the church, Angel became a Benedictine monk and a stonemason by trade. In 1868, he travelled to Fremantle with Bishop Salvado and 31 monks on the ship ‘Robert Morrison’.

After walking to Subiaco for a blessing by the bishop they headed to the Benedictine community at New Norcia Mission, a journey which would take over six weeks. The monks stopped at a farmhouse on the Old Guildford Road for water and rest. The owner, John (Juan) had also come over from Spain with Bishop Salvado some time earlier. He had left the mission and was now married with a young family. This was a turning point in Angel’s life as he saw a different lifestyle which he had not known existed.

Angel stayed only 16 days after reaching the Monastery. With two other monks he absconded, walking back to Perth. (The Monastery records suggest that the three ran away and were killed by the natives.)

Arriving at the Catholic Church in Perth, Angel was told to go back to New Norcia. However, he had tasted freedom and headed back to the farm on Old Guildford Road where John gave him work for the next few years.

Driver Paul

Angel eventually found himself in Fremantle working many jobs. One was with Mr George Postan. Angel married George’s eldest stepdaughter, Mary GreenPostan, and became a market gardener with 100 acres of land in Cockburn, naming the area Hope Valley.

Angel and Mary de San Miguel raised 14 children.

Kim’s grandfather Charlie was number 13. Angel died in Fremantle, aged 80, in 1928. The de San Miguel’s are now one of the biggest family names in Western Australia, many of whom went to CBC Fremantle, de San Miguels (Miguels), all descendants of Angel de San Miguel, including members of the teaching staff.

Last year Kim and Paul’s two daughters Kylie and Jodie walked the Camino Salvado Trail in the footsteps of their ancestor, the first of the de San Miguel clan to do so, inspiring Paul and Kim to also take on the challenge in 2026.

Callan Howe-Robinson Class of 2018

By the time I graduated from CBC Fremantle in 2018, my experiences at the College had helped shape the person I am today and given me a strong understanding of the direction I wanted my life to take.

I wanted to work in sport. More importantly, I wanted to become a coach and mentor who could positively influence athletes and help guide them through the challenges they would experience in sport and in life.

Some of that motivation came from my own experiences as an athlete. Through my different coaches, I learned valuable lessons about how to communicate effectively and, at times, how not to. Those experiences made me determined to become a positive role model. One that would provide the support, guidance and mentorship to help the athletes around me navigate adversity, continue growing, and become a better version of themselves.

Sport and training have always been major pillars of my life. As a state level sprinter and high-grade AFL player, I was constantly looking for ways to improve my own performance. I became passionate about movement, biomechanics, strength training and the overall process of athletic development.

Growth is also a strong personal value. I wanted to combine my passion for performance with my desire to mentor others and I enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle to study Exercise and Sport Science, with the vision of being a physio, but eventually becoming a Strength and Conditioning Coach.

In 2019, I completed a practical placement at Ludus Sports Performance in Myaree. I immediately connected with the environment because the values at Ludus strongly reflected the values I had been taught at CBC. Both emphasised supporting the person beside you, treating others as you would want to be treated and being there for people during difficult periods of their lives. Both also shared a commitment to developing personal growth.

I have remained at Ludus ever since, progressing from a university placement student into a coach and leader within the organisation. When an athlete walks through our doors, my responsibility extends beyond improving their sporting performance.

My role is also to help that person develop the confidence, resilience, and life skills required to face adversity, manage life’s challenges, and work to become the best version of themself. I want to help people recognise what they are capable of and provide them with the tools to navigate life both inside and outside of sport. That is why I do what I do. And, when I reflect on where this purpose originated, much of it comes back to my time at CBC. CBC helped shaped me through its values, its teachers and the everyday actions we were encouraged to demonstrate.

Being a good person was not simply something you spoke about. It was demonstrated through your behaviour. By holding the door open for someone, offering your seat to an elderly person or another, showing respect, using your manners, and looking for opportunities to support someone who needed a friend to lean on.

Palma These might appear small actions, but repeated over time, they became habits which helped establish the foundation of the person I would become.

The support he provided during important periods of my life became an example of the type of support I wanted to offer others.

The teachers demonstrated these values through their own actions. They were there to teach and guide us, but they were also there to support us. They wanted the best for us, even during the moments when we may not have recognised it ourselves. One teacher who had a particularly significant influence on my life was Mr Correia.

The communication skills and relationship-building skills I developed at CBC have continued to help me throughout adulthood. They have allowed me to form genuine connections with athletes, parents, colleagues and the wider community.

Mr Correia was one of the strongest male role models I had growing up. He taught me how to face adversity, gave me mental strategies and practical tools for dealing with hardship and approaching challenges directly.

He also taught me that it was okay to show emotion and that being emotionally open did not make you any less of a man. Through his words and, more importantly, his actions, he demonstrated the importance of CBC values and showed me what genuine mentorship looked like.

A significant part of my coaching and leadership has been shaped by the way Mr Correia mentored me.

The school taught me manners, discipline and sacrifice.

It helped me develop a clearer understanding of my life purpose. I am fortunate to work in a field that I genuinely care about. I have the opportunity to mentor athletes, guide people through adversity, and help individuals to develop strong personal growth.

Although my career has continued to evolve since leaving school, the foundations of who I am remain closely connected to the lessons I learned at CBC Fremantle.

The school did not simply prepare me for a career. It helped shape the gentleman, coach, and mentor I am today.

Donovan de Souza Class of 2003

During my years at CBC (1999-2003), I spent most of my time dedicated towards academic pursuit, being particularly passionate about Politics, History and English/English Literature in my final years, all of which I won subject prizes for in Year 12. My intention was to pursue a career in politics or environmental law. It’s hard for a 17-year-old to see where life will take you, and as it turns out a lot of the extracurricular activities I participated in at CBC have ended up being some of the most formative to who I am as a person, more than the formal education itself.

The first of these is music. Back then CBC did not formally teach singing, however I was one of the kids who would pop out to Mills Records after school and had a deep passion for music. In my final year I joined a band with several members of the Jazz Orchestra; my photo of three of them in band uniform was the cover image on the 2003 Annual. Throughout my time at university and early to mid-20s, I continued to sing in bands semi-professionally, working with the Funk Club for various shows, while also leading my own original soul band The Accumulated Gestures. While I’ve since retired from making music, it was a wonderful part of my 20s that all started when I got up the courage to sing George Benson’s ‘This Masquerade’ with the band for the school’s music festival.

Second was the film I made during Years 11 and 12.

As the Communications Prefect, the school generously loaned me a Mac for the year - ostensibly to put together a montage video that would play during the graduation ceremony, but also so I could edit the B-grade sci-fi film I was making that featured many of my friends and classmates in key roles.

This sparked an interest in film, photography and electronic art, and while I got into UWA with the intention of studying Political Science, I ended up changing my degree to a Bachelors in Fine Art, specialising in electronic art. Fresh out of university, I joined a multidisciplinary art collective known as Spatula which resulted in an exhibition of our work in 2011, and a ‘Spirit of the Fringe’ award-nominated show at Fringe World in 2012. Film also had a serendipitous influence on my personal life; while helping a friend out by filming their theatre production, I met my future wife Alissa for the first time!

Thirdly, what I did for Year 12 Leavers has continued to be a driving passion of my life. As our 2003 Leavers celebration I organised for a group to tackle the Walpole to Denmark section of the Bibbulmun Track. Those eight days along the south coast were my first taste of multi-day hiking and it’s been an important part of my life ever since, something I’ve continued to pursue and document via my blog (now YouTube channel) The Long Way’s Better and being co-host of the podcast Real Trail Talk.

Palma After finishing my degree, I fell into a part-time job as an Operations Support Officer working for the local Transperth in Palmyra, and from that position I found myself joining the Scheduling and Planning department, eventually becoming responsible for the scheduling of bus routes in the Fremantle, Melville and Cockburn area. There is no obvious career path for becoming a transport planner/scheduler and it is one that I would never have considered as an option, however I soon discovered that I had a real aptitude for scheduling and planning. I continued working for the local operator until the end of 2017, when I took up a position scheduling transport for athletes and staff at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

After the Games, I joined a scheduling and transport consultancy in Melbourne, Urban Transit Solutions (previously Phillip Boyle and Associates), initially working FIFO between Perth and Melbourne until March 2020, when global events meant I switched to working from home in Bateman, then Booragoon. During my time with Urban Transit Solutions, I’ve supported multinational transport companies in numerous successful bus and rail tenders across Australia and New Zealand and have been able to directly improve the environmental sustainability of public transport networks in various capital and regional cities, including ongoing work for the Greater Hobart Bus Network.

Outside of transport consultancy, I’ve put my skills to work on local, community-led proposals, having produced the first stage of planning for a Bull Creek to Fremantle Cycle Route which received funding through Town Team Movement’s Streets Alive program, funded

by Main Roads. And while I’m no longer a practicing artist, I’ve combined my interests in the environment and creativity into a love for Australian native gardening, which I hope to extend from a private interest and into a community-led botanic garden one day.

I turned 40 this year, have been happily married for 12 years and my wife and I welcomed our son Miles four years ago. I could not have predicted how my life and career would unfold when I left CBC, and if anything, it’s ended up better than I imagined. A large part of that was a strong but flexible foundation made during my time at CBC, a sense of never not wanting to be defined by any one thing, and an optimism that I’d find my way.

While I don’t often see friends from my time at CBC, continuing to live in the local area means I do run into ‘old boys’ of many generations, and I feel particularly proud to be able to share stories and laughs about the late, great Bob Rose’Meyer, singing the Edmund Rice Anthem at Mass, and the influence our education had on the men we would grow up to be.

Luke Cowlam Class of 2015

Upon graduating CBC in 2015, I was like many students who did not know which path to take or what to study.

After pondering on it for a while and bucking the trend of all my mates, I decided an electrical apprenticeship was for me, and until this day, I believe it was the best decision I could have made. From my earliest days at CBC to the present moment, the lessons learnt, and experiences I have had, have instilled in me strong values by which I live my daily life.

Starting out as a young apprentice, the simple lessons taught at CBC of trying your hardest and showing up willing to give a hundred percent helped to make four years fly by. Two of those years were spent with a local family business which highlighted how much every cent counts at the end of the day, with the final two years working with a contracting company throughout the Murchison region at the historic Paddy’s Flat and Big Bell gold mines. This experience opened my eyes to the grand scale of the resources sector and the crucial role it plays for so many in Western Australia. Throughout, no matter what, those simple lessons of showing up and giving every task your all, made the journey easier.

As the years passed and the price of gold surged, the demand for high voltage electricians skyrocketed and I landed a job on Kalgoorlie’s famous Golden Mile at the Super Pit’s underground operation Mount Charlotte, as one of the only FIFO employees in a residential mine.

Transferring to Kanowna Belle Gold mine, or ‘KB’ as it is known to locals, has gifted me with lifelong friends and treasured experiences including; travelling to London to catch up with mates, sipping cocktails on the pristine Croatian coastline watching the sunset over the Adriatic sea, catching up for dinner at some of Melbourne’s most iconic restaurants, or watching Gold Rush Guru charge home to win the main race at Derby Day in 2024, all stemming from friendships built 1300 metres below sea level.

Fast forward to the present day, the priceless lessons of Servant Leadership taught by Principal Domenic Burgio and embedded in a young boy so many years ago play a crucial role in my day-to-day life. Currently in a supervisory role at Granny Smith Gold Mine leading a team made up of electricians, dewatering, and refrigeration technicians, Dom’s simple words of treating every person with kindness, listening, and showing compassion in the hardest moments, have added a rewarding benefit to my role.

Besides the FIFO challenges, Waterfront Electrical Services (EC16771) keeps me on my toes during my RnR servicing the domestic, commercial, and industrial markets around Fremantle. Completing the smallest job or a larger one gives me a feeling of great reward knowing I’ve been able to not just assist someone but to build a relationship based on honesty, trustworthiness, and reliability.

Outside of working my passions include some of the simple things which I hold so dear, family, friends, and food. There is no greater moment for me than when all three can be combined and with a strong Croatian background these moments make for great Fešta centred around a lamb or pig on the spit cooked over fire fuelling a full stomach and laughs whether it be at home or with family in Croatia along the Dalmatian coast in Makarska or Split. Travel remains a large part of my life, be it a quick dash within Australia or to south-east Asia, or spending summertime in Europe with friends and family. And property investing and watches are my other guilty pleasures which keep me striving for success every day.

Jesse Mirco Class of 2014

Jesse Mirco is a gridiron football punter. In his teens, he attended ProKick Australia, where he was rated as a three-star recruit and the number five punter by 247Sports, a prominent American digital media network dedicated to college football, college basketball, and high school athletic recruiting.

In 2021, he committed to play college football at the Ohio State University in the USA where, as the Buckeyes starting punter, he played in front of 105,000 plus fans each week. He played with Ohio for three seasons earning an All-Big Ten Conference Honourable Mention, awarded to the top performers from each college season, and was one of ten semi-finalists for the Ray Guy Award for the most outstanding college punter.

In 2024, Jesse transferred to Vanderbilt University completing his Masters in Marketing while playing senior college football. His strong season performance earned him multiple All-SEC Honours and an All-American Honourable Mention.

The 2025-2026 CFL Global Draft saw Jesse with the Canadian Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Career highlights include participating in the NFL combine workouts for punters, playing professional football in the CFL (Canadian Football League) and winning The Grey Cup Grand Final (Canada’s version of the Super Bowl) in 2025.

Neesham Family Edmund’s faith was the foundation and motivation for his mission to liberate education and build an inclusive community. Founded in 1882, CBC Fremantle honours its history and the tradition to educate boys, through Catholic Education, to become good young men that contribute to society and help grow the next generation of good young men.

Family traditions shape our identity, contribute to a sense of comfort and belonging, bring people together, encourage ongoing connection and reinforce shared values. For Edward and Margaret Neesham, family and faith were the values at the foundation of their mission to raise children who would become good people that contribute to society and help grow the next generation to continue this mission.

When choosing CBC for their boys, this was their hope and the tradition that was established in 1955 would continue to live on today through their children; for the Neesham family, that tradition now spans through generations, reflecting a remarkable story of commitment, leadership and giving back. From these foundations, an extraordinary multi-generational legacy has grown, firmly embedded in the life of the College.

Over the decades, Edward (1960), Harry (1961), David (1963), Peter (1968), and Gerard Neesham (1971) have all proudly worn the CBC uniform. Their sisters, Margaret, Mary, Anne, Catherine, Irene and Teresa, also played an important role in continuing the family’s connection to the College, with their sons and later their grandchildren attending CBC Fremantle.

Edward often speaks fondly of the powerful influence CBC had on shaping his values, particularly the example set by Brother Barry Robinson, whose tireless fundraising initiatives ensured classrooms were well resourced and support was provided to those less fortunate.

These early lessons instilled in Edward a lifelong belief in living out Gospel values through action serving others, working together and recognising the needs of those around him, principles that would echo strongly throughout his family for generations.

That tradition of service is evident across the Neesham family story. Edward Neesham OAM was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his outstanding contribution to community service, particularly through decades of dedication to the water polo community.

His commitment reflects the core attributes of a CBC Gentleman - striving for personal excellence, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and meeting challenges with resilience - values first nurtured during his time at the College and carried throughout his life of service.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Jayden Johnson (2021) (John Hughes Service Award 2021) learned the importance and value of service during his time at the CBC. As a young boy his desire to join CBC was simply ‘because his grandfather went there,’ but in keeping the family tradition alive he experienced leadership, service, faith and community. Continuing his commitment to service as an active member of the South Coogee Volunteer Fire Service, is a powerful demonstration of how CBC values continue to shape future generations, Through Liberating Education.

The Neesham family’s contribution to the community extends even further. Gerard Neesham OAM has been recognised nationally for his service to Indigenous youth through the founding and leadership of the Clontarf Foundation, supporting young Indigenous boys to remain engaged in education and develop life skills through sport and mentoring.

Palma His longstanding involvement in Australian Rules Football, including as the inaugural coach of the Fremantle Dockers, reflects a lifetime commitment to youth development, opportunity and leadership.

Their brother, David Charles Neesham OAM, was also recognised with an Order of Australia Medal for his significant service to sport, particularly water polo, further cementing the family’s longstanding contribution to sporting excellence in Western Australia.

Today, the Neesham legacy continues not only through students, but through service to the CBC community itself Picking up where he left off, College Vice Captain in 2018, Preston Hinton, Margaret Neesham’s grandson, joined the Teaching Staff this year and jumped straight into coaching and giving back however he can. Choir Master and Retreats Coordinator, Emma Tandy, Anne Neesham’s daughter, along with Edward’s daughter Marie Johnson, also serve as valued teachers at CBC Fremantle, giving back to the very College that helped shape their family’s story.

Their presence on staff represents a powerful full-circle moment, reinforcing the tradition of CBC’s enduring sense of belonging across generations. That legacy extends even further through the Neesham family’s broader network of multi-generational CBC connections.

Edward Neesham’s wife, Margaret Neesham (née Miller), daughter of Henry and Margaret Miller, founders and long-time owners of the much-loved Miller Bakery on Baal Street, Palmyra, a familiar part of Fremantle life since 1935.

Through this connection, a wider network of families, including the Foleys, McManus’, Murray Smiths, Bostons and Regans, who share deep ties to the College, with multiple generations of alumni and even current students continuing the CBC journey today. Together, these connections form a powerful tradition that plays a pivotal role in shaping our personal identities, establishing a web of relationships providing a sense of belonging and enduring sense of community at CBC Fremantle.

Vale George Ayres Class of 1950

It is with great sadness that we advise the passing of our dear friend and colleague George Ayres on Friday 3 July 2026.

George was born in 1934 and attended Star of the Sea Convent until Year 3, moving to CBC Fremantle in Year 4 and completing his Leaving Certificate in 1950.

After leaving school, George lived and worked on his family’s farm in Beacon until 1958 when he joined the Police force, becoming a Probationary Constable in Perth in 1959. Later that year he moved to Derby Police Station where he met Patricia, who he married in 1960.

In 1962, they moved back to Perth, George resigned from the Police force and from 1963 to 1984, he worked in Life Insurance starting as an AMP Collector Agent and moving his way up to a Senior Superintendent position. George then started his own Life Insurance business, Life Ayre with Finwest, helping people until he retired in his early 70’s.

George was a stalwart champion of CBC Fremantle and the Old Boys’ community throughout its history, and his life experience was much appreciated.

An Old Boys’ Committee member for many years, and President of the Committee from 2002 to 2017, his unwavering commitment, integrity, and leadership have left a lasting impact on the old boys of CBC, and his legacy has set a high standard which will continue to inspire future committees.

The College records include the very many initiatives he was a part of, among them reunions, fundraising, special events and support, and we are all very appreciative of the time and effort he gave to keep the spirit of unity and tradition of the old boys of CBC Fremantle alive.

1934 - 2026 His dedication to keeping these connections has made a very real difference in strengthening our alumni community of today.

George firmly believed that we each carry a part of CBC Fremantle within us, a testament to the formative years spent learning, growing and forging lifelong friendships, and in following in his footsteps, we look forward to keeping up the traditions of excellence, camaraderie, and support for generations to come.

From all of us George, a heartfelt God Bless and Thank You for everything you have done.

The Next Chapter Begins Over the past few years, much attention has rightly been given to honouring our heritage.

Historic buildings have been restored, stories that deserve recognition have been retold, Honour Boards have been reinstated, and new memorials and commemorative spaces have been created. Throughout this publication, we have celebrated these initiatives and the people, places, and values, that have shaped CBC Fremantle for 125 years.

These stories remind us that a strong future is built upon a strong foundation. They also remind us that while schools are often measured by their buildings, programs, and achievements, their true strength lies in their people. It is the relationships formed, the values lived each day, and the commitment to serving something greater than ourselves that continue to distinguish CBC Fremantle.

The students of today will become the alumni of tomorrow.

As we look towards 2027 and beyond, we do so with confidence.

Confidence in a college that has consistently demonstrated resilience, generosity, and a willingness to embrace change while remaining true to its purpose.
