Jerry Streeter #45 – stands 6-3, weighs 198 and rates as one of the strongest men on squad … good shooter and top-notch rebounder … figures strongly in plans at CBC … majoring in engineering, reads the 1959-1960 Columbia Basin College Hawks basketball team press brochure. Jerry, or Streeter as his teammates called him, played for CBC for two seasons from 1959 to 1962. The bonds created among the players during those years stuck.

“We were a tight-knit group,” said Dallas Barnes, who played with Jerry on the 1961 team. “We were rated a top team in the nation in those days and the first to bring a state championship to CBC.”

Back Together Decades Later

In 2005, Jerry organized a reunion at his Idaho home for some players and CBC-connected pals to memorialize former team member Bob Maulsby. That weekend was the first of many get-togethers, rotating to different homes in various states. At each gathering, the group – which some dubbed the ‘59ers to signify their first year at CBC – remembers friends who have passed. They also relive the highlights of their college days. Over the years, the tales have grown taller and accomplishments grander.

Why I Give “Giving to CBC is a way of supporting the place that has given so much to me. I started donating as an employee and still give today because I know everything the college does for the community and the range of people CBC serves: from high school students to retirees getting GEDs to bachelor’s degrees.”

NEWS “We become boys again and escape back to a time we all enjoyed,” Dallas shared. “Sometimes we play a round or two of basketball. Of course, now we have to shoot the ball with two hands instead of one.”

DID YOU KNOW?

After Jerry died in 2011, the group decided to start an annual scholarship as a lasting tribute.

“We wanted to honor Jerry. He was a leader in the locker room and on the court. And I can tell you many Jerry Streeter stories, but most of them you can’t repeat,” teammate Larry Gunn said with a laugh. Although the reunions are smaller, and the pandemic has kept them apart, the ‘59ers hope to come together at CBC this fall. “We’ve kept in contact for more than 60 years now,” said teammate Richard Hannan, who also taught and coached basketball at CBC from 1967 to 1974. “Jerry was important to all of us – just as important, CBC was great to us.” So far, five students have received the Jerry Streeter Memorial Scholarship. Richard shared the group’s goal is to “keep the scholarship going to support Hawks for generations to come.”
